I just want to say thank you man, I have a really important test today and I'm really stressed out but I'm glad I'm able to enjoy this before I have to do it. Also with one of my favorite movies as well. To end up watching jjk I do hope you enjoy it, but regardless thank you.

You should review the manga before the anime i would suggest
Not gonna lie, this movie works best as a prologue watched after seeing the original series,. I doubt many would reccomend wacthing this first as most of us enjoyed it so much because it gave us more time with characters who dont get a lot of time in the normal series early on. Meaning instead of finding the middle boring we loved learning more about certain charaters

2. The movie was made to be watched after S1 as shown by the number of elements shown in S1 that are paid off in the movie
3. Things with the power system make more sense
4. You will actually be able to kinda understand Gojo and Geto's characters as well as their dynamic with each other (although this is further touched on in the manga)

I honestly disagree. I really loved the series so I was so excited to watch the movie in the theater I even joined up with some friends but all of us thought the movie was mostly boring and dragging and the "war" was the most uninspired one we've seen. Mostly one sided fighting fodders and the 1v1 of Yuta and Geto was lame asf just a kamehameha off.
Most disappointing film in a long time.
It is a bit awkward since JJK 0 is essentially a prototype to the main series and was written as a largely self-contained story. It does definitely read like a series of vignettes with the main conflict only appearing half-way through.
It was a self contained story. But it ended up being more successful than the author thought, so much so that they offered him a chance to have his first serialized manga and they asked that he made something similar. In the end he just chose to use it as the basis for the show. It's a 1-shot that got somewhat awkwardly repurposed as a prologue.
I feel like it was a lot better than the series and serves as a better introduction to the world.
It's a spin off of the entire series, he should've started Season 1

I think it works better right before. In There is a progression with Gedo as a character, where in the movie he is kinda a one note seeming, evil, racist bad guy, a good villain for a movie much more focused on Yuta and his growth.. Only then at the end with his talk with Gojo to hint at a lot more going on with this character. This primes you to care much more about Gedo in the Hidden inventory arc as we step by step see the events that pushed him to become who he is in 0.
Current Jujutsu Kaisen manga is literally heart attack inducing, hope mark continues with the series

Definitely check out the main series. Akutami was still an “amateur” writer when he wrote 0 and he has improved so much since then. The shibuya incident arc is one of the best new gen arcs in jump hands down

One of the best Shonen arcs of all time in general to be honest. I’ve read most of the classics, and jjk has slowly made its way up with yuyu hakusho, bleach and one piece. Eden’s zero is the other modern Shonen I love

The JJK manga is definitely worth watching out, we can clearly see the growth of Gege Akutami as an author between volume 0 and the first chapter.
4:40 I don't know if you realize it or not but Yuta comes to the conclusion that he is the reason Rika is haunting him. So the the story was never about getting rid of Rika it was more of Yuta learning to live in general. Which plays into his character arc in the main story.
yep, effectively Yuta was the curse keeping Rika's soul trapped on Earth. makes his story all the more compelling when you realize that the situation is actually backwards than it seems to be presented

If this movie is your first with JJK to cover later, you're good because this movie is technically the prequel to the manga/anime events, so you're ok to start JJK in your channel. Once you catch up until the present, don't worry, many things you had problems like Yuta are resolved and fixed well.If you ask me, the actual manga is much better in character development with the main cast and structure and other elements so don't worry about your first time with JJK with this film, have you time easy :)
The brilliance of this and the series “unoriginal” parts make the grander plot and where it is currently shine so much more, it feels like it was Gege’s effort to set us up for ultimately a story of tragedy and fighting through that pain
Its funny to hear the critique about Akutami not planning enough and struggling to navigate from one scene to another because in the main series god damn, anyone caught up with the manga can tell you just how much Akutami's improved on that since Zero
The main series is, in my opinion, amazing, and gege akutami improves at a rapid pace throughout the manga. you may have heard many times already, but the shibuya incident arc is phenomenal as well.
I would say wait until season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen before diving into it. The Shibuya Incident arc is what turned Jujutsu Kaisen into one of my all time favourite series - it is rich in action, characters, and themes. Anime only watchers who have brushed the series off for being generic, or whatever else, have no idea what is about to happen. Season 2 is when Jujutsu Kaisen is going to prove to everyone that it is one of the greatest series of recent years.
Probably wont be animated for Season 2, since its coming this year. My bet is that S2 will be only Gojo Flashback in 11 or 12 episodes

Even though Jujutsu Kaisen is atm by far my favorite series, I can honestly agree that the start of the movie was aimless like you pointed out (same with the manga). It was like a 200page one-shot. But after reading the main series, there are so many things to appreciate here, especially Geto and Gojo's relationship, and Geto in general. I hope you will give the main series a chance. Great review as always.
As someone that discovered JJK through 0, I had a very different reception to this story. I really liked it, because it took the time to be aimless.
I don't really care if the main goal of the protagonist is the focus of what I'm reading, because thinking about the long term process of a series just doesn't sit well with me when I'm experiencing it. Instead, I just want the ride to be consistenly enjoyable, which 0 did very well in my opinion.
Sure, Yuta's problem was actually solved really easily, and could have been done prior, but because the story took its time to delve into everyone even to the detriment of Yuta's objective, that made the final conclusion that much more meaningful and satisfying.
I don't read to be see a story unfold, I read to see characters live. At least, that's my motto, both in reading and writing.
Edit: I invite everyone to read "Growing Tired of the Lazy High Elf Life after 120 Years" because it encapsulates this philosophy extremely well. It's just an, almost, immortal being traveling the world and it's a fascinating read.
Yeah the youtuber Red from overlysarcasticproductions has made numerous videos on this in her series; Trope talks.
Some of the most famous stories of all time take a cartoonishly long amount of time to “get going” Lord of the rings and dragonball come to mind first.
And its kinda crazy to see how so many series from all mediums these days are at an arms race for the readers attention.
It makes sense depending on time, budget, medium etc, but the downside leads to us having portags racing to save a world or family or self we barely even knew yet. General audiences are much more genre savy then the creators or even the audience themself know and are actually great at picking up patterns and can recognize plot devices well.
The last thing a creator should want is for the audience to immediately see their hands from behind the curtains at episode 1
It’s why stuff like Alderaans destruction and uncle Owens death in Star Wars are memed to this the day.
People can see the only reason they died was to build up other characters and push the plot forward, so it’s so eerie how characters mourn the loss of other things in-universe but those same characters move on from the death of their planet and surrogate father figure almost as soon as they died 💀
The hardest part of doing anything, is always starting it first. So sometimes the aimless wandering at th beginning can often be used to great affect as the buffer period and excuse for the writer to actually experiment and establish what they want to do and how to do it
This. Part of the reason I enjoy stories like Attack On Titan, Bleach, and ofc JJK so much is because I can feel what the characters feel, experience what the characters experience in the moment. Then I can go back and see all of the insane foreshadowing, ponder the deeper thematic values of a character etc. They're perfectly enjoyable either way.

@@theradionicrevival8068The thing is, dragonball still wasn’t aimless. It took a while to get a pace, but it still made motivations for the characters that drove the story. It also had a protagonist like Goku that was active enough to drive the story interesting places. Being stuck at a halt with a passive character just won’t be interesting.
JJK is the new gen shounen that I really love. It doesn't afraid to take risks and fights are just amazing. Cant wait for you to review shibuya and the culling games.
I think a full series review would be great but maybe i would wait for the second season because, if the first season of jjk is fine, the second season should adapt in my opinion two of the most impactful and well written arcs in recent memory.
As an aspiring Mangaki seeing you break down, analysis, critique and even point out some flaws or things you would do differently in any forms of Japanese fiction is a great help and really a pleasure. Keep publishing more and pushing out great contain Mark Senpai. I've been with you since quarantine of 2020 an I haven't been disappointed or lead a stray. Everything you've taught/I've learned helped me become the Writer/Artist I am today and I hope to become better.
All things considered, I think this is a pretty fair assessment. Like you mentioned, JJK 0 was a prototype to the manga and anime series that we have now, and as a result some details were changed and added retroactively to make JJK 0 fall more in line with the main series. Gege Akutami's writing has definitely improved consistently since writing JJK 0 and I feel like watching the first season will be well worth your time, especially with the knowledge that the second season is going to start this summer and that the manga itself is probably going to be wrapped up within the next year or so.
Yes please watch jjk. The series has currently one of the best plot progressions I have ever read in manga. Those that are up to date know what I am talking about.
There were some things within the film that weren't given proper insight or explanation until you get to the mainstream anime, so it's understandable for someone without prior knowledge to have trouble connecting the dots. Personally, I'd give it an 8.5/10, and I would highly encourage getting into the Jujutsu Kaisen Anime or Manga, trust me it'll be quite the experience one way or another :]

I think mark, that if you're going to get into Jujutsu kaisen It Would be best to get into it now since the anime's 2nd season starts in July and in the 2nd Half of the season Adapts The Shibuya incident Which is not just one of the Most hype Arcs within the JJK community But one of the most beloved arcs within modern manga
It’s understandable you’d have the stance you do, Mark. This movie Fr is better after season 1, and “arguably” after reading the star plasma vessel arc, which takes place when Gojo and Geto are in HS, so you can see Geto come to his conclusion. This arc will be one of the first two in season two before ONE OF THE BEST ARCS IN SHOUNEN, the Shibuya incident. I hope you check out the series and season two when it drops. You won’t be able to look away ;)
It's definitely a better story as a supplement to the actual series, allowing for more character depth for some of the supporting cast.
I actually really like this movie, but i think that's because I already watched the anime and was up to date with the manga. I think this movie works amazing as a "flashback" when you're already aware of the characters and story. There is a lot of fanservice in this movie that you wouldn't get otherwise.
So i understand why starting with this movie might make it seem underwhelming.
However i can say that i absolutely adore the series in a similar way i love Hunter x Hunter. The power system is well thought out, the characters are interesting and the plot twists and hype moments really make jjk a must watch imo.
I think you should review the main series: it's definitely a Better story than 0 and not only espands on the characters you already expressed interest in during this prologue, but introduces new characters which are arguably even more compelling

Interesting criticism. Honestly, I can't refute much of what you've said about the film, but I guess I didn't care as much because I had already read the manga before I watched it/read the prologue. I didn't even know JJK 0 came out BEFORE the main series, so that was new to me. But I would personally love it if you analyzed JJK, I really want to hear your thoughts on it.

akatami is a genius in writing. When I watched this film my reaction was that it was good but nothing more than that. Whatever flaws he had in writing this part of the story is entirely left out in the series and the manga is exceptional and the at this moment is reaching such new heights that it could lead to one of the best shonun arcs.
One of my favorite parts of the main JJK manga was Yuta showing back up in the story. We got to see the arc of his character and now we get to see what he looks like as a fully realized sorcerer and self actuating person.

Like many other comments have said, I highly recommend checking out the main series, and then going back to watch the movie again afterwards! While the original manga came out before the JJK series, it was definitely intended more to test the waters within the manga industry on the possible popularity of the main series concept, and Gege’s writing has improved immensely since.
The movie itself was release AFTER the first season of JJK for a reason, as the creators knew viewers would need the first season of context to properly understand the characters, the significance of who they are, and their relationships with each other - e.g. there are lots of hints about Geto and Gojo in season 1 and the movie to frame the lead-up to season 2 which focuses on those two characters. Season 1 of JJK doesn’t even feature Yuuta beyond silhouettes and references from other characters, which builds a certain expectation and hype around him before the movie was released. His "shy" character type also is completely prologue-manga exclusive, which you would notice from his first real introduction in the main-series manga.
Anyway I would definitely highly recommend Season 1 and the manga of JJK, there’s so many beautiful relationship dynamics to explore, philosophy to muse on, and beautiful scenes and panels to witness! And the current chapters coming out right now are some of the craziest and most exciting on the scene!
The soundtrack for this film was absolutely incredible. I loved the opening score “Greatest Strength,” and was literally headbanging in the theater when the rock instrumentation kicked in. Then during the climax you have the consecutive tracks “The Real You,” “We Are Stop the Attack,” and “This Is Pure Love.” We Are Stop the Attack being a heavier rock version of Nanami’s “Working Overtime” OST from season 1 of the TV anime gave me pure serotonin. Tsutsumi’s compositions are just amazing 🤌🏻
Eh left a lot to be desired. The only good track imo was 7-3 and thats already in the anims

Definitely give JJK a shot. It's one of my favorite ongoing manga and season 2 is set to release relatively soon which should be adapting the Shibuya incident arc which is one of my favorite manga arcs that I have read in a while.
Gosh, I just love your reviews. You have such a competent grasp on compelling writing and character work. I always am a little nervous when you pick up popular series' like these since there'd be good reason to just sing their praises, but you seem to pick up on the emotional elements that are missing, while still appreciating what led them to be so well-received. I love the balance
I agree with your point on following Yuta. He always seemed out of reach and you could never wrap your head around who he really is. At first, I never really minded him, but he’s a character where he gets better as the story keeps progressing. It might be that relation between you and a character. If you haven’t experienced a close friend dying, it might not hit you as hard compared to someone who did. Yuta was more enjoyable when I read the manga, and he’s one of the most powerful characters within the whole series.

Literally watched this movie for the first time today after reading up to the shibuya arc. This could not be more perfectly timed!
Perhaps it's because I'm up to date on the manga, but Yuta is quite honestly my favorite character in JJK. He's such an interesting take on the "I'll always sacrifice myself" style character. I won't say much more than that, but I assure you, JJK is an absolute treat to go through.

One of the big problems with starting the series with the movie is that, even if the manga portion of the story came before the main series, the movie came after the first season of the anime, and because of that some details, like characters and powers, are shown that are not present in the 0 manga, basically spoiling stuff that you are not suposed to see yet.
I also think that this portion of the story doesnt really work for a movie structure. It should have been some kind of special in my opinion.
Mark PLEASE review the manga. It starts off as just a good shounen but it slowly becomes one of if not the best new school shounen by a mile with how good the writing and action get
I would really urge you to continue JJK, lets just argue that JJK0 was more like a test screening, to see the potential of this series and where it can eventually go, while S1 for me was just good, the material which comes after S1 is what cements this series as one my favorites of all time, comparing to my top animes- AOT particularly didn't land the ending for me (it was still overall amazing) and HXH is still on-going, but seeing where the story of JJK is going, it might well be my most favorite anime series of all time or at least tie with HXH. I think I like JJK mainly because it is somewhat similar to HXH in terms of the battle system and characters, even the quality of antagonists are really good and Gege has bigggg balls, arguably bigger than Isayama's with what he has done with some of the characters, if that's what you're looking for that is something different from other shounens. The negatives I hear that the later arcs have too much battles and the abilities getting convoluted (which I can understand) but it is a Battle Shounen... so yea, I see that as a positive. The other negative I hear is that story takes a back seat because of the battles, which I completely disagree with, as the battles and conflicts are built around the story, the story is still the star, and I don't want to spoil anything but we rarely do see good plans coming from the antagonists, because here they are the ones fighting an uphill fight as you've seen with geto's plan, is just a small part of it, and JJK has buttloads of that, which I think you can appreciate.
Before you explained the reasons why you chose to start with the movie instead of the series, honesty I didn't know this manga came out before the main series, I thought that was a weird choice. I appreciate the approach, as you probably experience it the way many people did.
I have seen plenty of your reactions, and I can tell that our opinions can be different from material to material, but I really appreciate that about how your review and talk about any given series! Love to hear the new perspectives, even if they differ from mine. For example, when you spoke about HxH's York New Arc, I had a veeeeery strong feeling you would not like some of the choices made in the Chimera Ant Arc, and that seemed to be the case. I do prefer the later of the first personally, but really appreciated your input and reasoning.
Based purely on this, I would love to see you review the main series of JJK and if you were remotely interested in this, I would also love to hear an overview of what you think your experience would have been like if you'd watch the series first and the film second.
If you do pick the main series up, I think a future segment/video on your thoughts after a re-watch of this film might be pretty cool.
I’d definitely recommend watching or reading the events that make up the first season of the anime then returning to this movie, U’ll find a greater appreciation of things not as fleshed out in this movie that it still provides
I think one of the main reasons you felt it was "boring and just moving along scene to scene" is you forget that this film was released with the context of the anime. It was to provide more backstory to already existing characters that were introduced in the anime and set up the upcoming arc for season 2. So a lot of the meandering around is set up for season 2. Which i enjoyed. If you haven't watched sesaon 1 and are viewing this as a stand alone film, I feel that's the wrong perspective to have going in
It should be viewed as season 0.5, which provides context for seasons 1 and 2. Not a standalone story.

I'm with you Mark, and I watched the movie (and read the manga) after seeing the first season and still thought it was a little lackluster, but I'm happy to say everything after it is leagues better! Definitely watch the anime but I also hope that you read the manga as well since Gege Akutami has some of the most dynamic looking art and best panelling I've seen in a long time

I really don't comment often, but JJK is an experience that no other series can replicate, and you'd genuinely be missing out.
I think picking up the series would be a good idea, mainly because of Gege's phenominal art style.
so funny how a LOT of the gripes you had with this movie are completely solved with reading the main series beforehand lmao. Gege was still an amateur at this point and was still figuring out how he wanted to tell this story, once he figured it out. He went HARD.

Yuta is my favorite character currently in JJk. I’m up to date of current manga chapters and with that in mind I think his character was mostly lack luster in 0. In my opinion a lot of characters take time in the manga to really develop and grab my attention. The author utilizes both future arcs and flashback arcs to really build his characters. I’m not saying that’s good or bad but for me it took a lot of time for me to find my favorite characters and enjoy having them on panel at all times.
In all honesty this story is best to watch half way through the main series (After gojo’s past arc)

The actual series solves many of the narrative meandering issues in this movie. I was zoning out a bit until the Inumaki fight.
Akutami actually include seemingly irrelevant situations in then narrative that serves to bolster major themes in the story.
i think the first season of jujutsu kaisan was alright and i thought this film was pretty dam good. i would personally like to see your opinion on the greater show itself and also the second season is supposed to be REALLY good.
I started with the main series when Shonen Jump put it on their app, with no experience with 0. Then they put 0 in their library about 2-3 arcs in, and I loved it as a prequel with minimal exposition or direction because I already had the exposition and I knew more or less where these characters would end up.
4:45 I agree that there's not a clear path for Yuuta to follow in freeing Rika, but in the greater themes of the series it makes sense. Jujutsu Kaisen is about really powerful people that, to move forward, have to accept responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences that come from those actions, even when they have no idea what's going on. The Jujutsu world is extremely unpredictable and confusing, and even the most powerful characters spend most of their time trying to figure out what's going on and what consequences their actions will have. Yuuta accepted the possible consequence of him giving all of himself to Rika, meaning his own death, and by doing so he not only unlocked his full potential until then limited by his fear of his own power, but also freed Rika because he finally accepted her as his childhood love instead of seeing her as the monster he turned her into. This change would have not occurred if Gojo told him what he needed to do, because it had to be sincere, but as it's implied in the story itself, even Gojo probably didn't know what needed to happen precisely.
Yuuta has a confusing path, but it's because the whole series is confusing, and the first victims of this confusion are the characters of that world themseves.
Honestly the second I realized Yuta had the same Japanese VA as Shinji I was like "ah yes pathetic sad boy. I'm in." Sometimes it is that easy
while this film is technically the start of the series I believe that you should have watched at least S1 of the anime first as that explains ALOT more than the movie

As many others have stated, the movie acts extremely well to flesh out an already established world with already established characters. As someone who watched the first season of the anime before watching the movie, I enjoyed it very much. There are aspects of the movie that you can't fully appreciate unless you watch the series first such as Nanami's short action sequence during the climax. It's a moment that is referenced in passing in the main series, and seeing it play out is extremely satisfying. Overall I think getting the insight of someone who hasn't seen the series is quite interesting. It is exactly how I imagine someone's reaction to One Piece Film Red would be if they had no familiarity with One Piece prior to watching. It's true that Film Red has a more fleshed out and cohesive goal from start to finish, but the connection with the characters is extremely important in works like these in my opinion. The issues you have with Yuta are likely common ones and WHY he was replaced by Yuji Itadori as the MC in the main story. Yuji is your stereotypical Shonen good boi MC.

honestly ; the anime's first season is pretty good - I would say it's not great, not 10/10 by any stretch of the imagination, however, season 2 coming up? We get two of the greatest arcs in modern shonen.
Also great review, jjk0 was written while Gege was an amateur, it was supposed to be the pilot essentially for the series and Yuta was going to be the MC, luckily the editor(s?) steered Gege in the right direction but Gege was still able to make use out of jjk0 in their story in a very effective manner.
This video I think has helped me to understand the difference between experiencing and analyzing a story. I think when analyzing a story you're looking for things to happen and keep you interested. In experiencing a story you're just going along for the ride. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I think it's similar to the idea of reacting and proactive protagonists. To me, watching Yuta just live life and not know exactly how to go about achieving his goal was fascinating to me.
Jjk was the first anime to make me want to read ahead in the manga and boy did it not disappoint! Hope you cover the series soon, keep up the great content!

I experienced this movie after watching the show, liking it enough to read the manga, seeing Yuta as a character BEFORE the movie. I loved the film because it flushed out a character I wanted to know more about. This movie being your first exposure to the series overall, doesn't surprise me at all why you gave it the score you did. I just hope you give the show a try now or at least read it. I would definitely love to see your analysis of the later fights in the manga of how the power system flushes itself out the further you get into it. Loved the video as always mark
Lemme start off by saying I absolutely love your videos...your AOT video resonates with me the most because I agree it's literally one of the best and intricate stories ever told in the history of anime.
However I think your view on the movie has been someone affected due to the mindset of a common misconception people (who haven't read JJK) had about the movie. It's not a "single" story film that is meant to have a beginning middle and end that fleshed out full character development etc....but rather an prelude to the the events that are currently happening in the present story of JJK. Yuta's story isn't fully told to an extent that we know where his future goals lies at the end the of movie because his story is far from over and seemingly we're getting more focus on the other 3 (maki inumaki & panda) because they are currently involved the the present/main storyline.
It's definitely worth the read and I know once you start you won't put it down lol
I was completely unaware that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was written kinda as a one-shot of the main series, considering how much the characters and plotpoints tie together with the main story. It's a very, very strange artistic choice and I always felt like this prequel is tied so well that it must have been written after the first volume's release. Either way, I highly recommend towards continuing the series, MAPPA outdone themselves with the animation and the score is incredible, and the manga goes through an amazing, seemingly overwhelming rollercoaster that will keep you engaged and yearning for more every single week.
Either way, I had the same feeling watching, the first half was way to mellow and you knew things will ramp up by the end, so there was no real suspense in characters dying or suffering major losses (especially after I watched the main show, most of the characters were present in the first season). This being made before the main show actually impedes on the writing, because most of the times when prequels happen the author can think about a proper way of structuring the plot so that there are more stakes to the characters, especially after the main show got popular. I don't know if what I wrote properly what I am trying to say, but the characterizations were really good, most of us had a soft spot for Maki and Toge already, but seeing them in the place that the current main group starts out feels great, Gojo is nice to see too and I really think you will like his personal story that will probably get animated in the next season of the series.

I definitely want you to read jjk however the first season covers the first 63 or so chapters which are all more or less setup for the events that take place after them. After that everything else is very much worth the patience. Highly recommended
Yuuta's goal at the beginning of the movie isn't to get rid of Rika, it's to find a way to be able to live with people again. He didn't conceive of uncursing Rika until the hospital scene when he realizes he might have cursed her.

JJK has some of the things you have said you LOVE about DBZ. The paneling, specifically when it comes to conveying motion, is excellent. The fights are used to propel the story forward and explore the narrative.

I wish Jujutsu Movie felt like a movie, 'cause it really feels like three episodes stick together. Maybe it would be better if they made three OVAs, because, as a movie, it kinda doesn't know where it wanna to be.
Of course, it ""has"" to adapt the spin off, Jujutsu Zero, and because of that it feels really lost.
Take Yuta. His story is about making friends, being someone who COULDN'T make friends and blame himself a lot. This whole fact doesn't say NOTHING about Suguro Geto. The antagonist. His battle against Yuta is more about Geto and Gojo, then about Yuta. Also it is a saddly poor anime fight. It is well done but I couldn't really SEE the fight. The movements, the choreography.
The movie never commits to a theme. The hardships and lonesome life Yuta lived and how he wants to make friends? A horror movie about a boy cursed to have a dead crush killing everyone who comes close to him? It is about to bitter ex's trying to battle and envolving kids in this fight? I don't know and Jujutsu Zero didn't know either
I would recommend checking out the anime or manga for the full JJK series. Akutami definitely improved a lot as a writer and as an artist, and I just have a fondness for the series and its cast. I think you would enjoy reading/watching it Mark
I really hope you do review it especially with the end of season 2 cause it makes the movie have even more impact when you see the plot threads left having finally get attention
Read Tokyo metropolitan magical technical school right after reading hidden inventory before there was an anime so this arc hit so many notes that i wanted and became one of my favorites and one of the most important in the greater story
Love the vid mark, also appreciate your grips with the film, all im going to say is similar to one piece, the manga doesn’t start at full gas but OH BOY those it shift from 3 to 1 and then never lets go, just endure till Shibuya and then you will be granted gege’s enlightenment
Jjk is definitely a property where EVERYTHING grows on you. I didn't like the first season until after I started reading the manga and appreciate allll the seeds planted
It's funny, I actually really enjoyed the movie BECAUSE of it's first half (or I guess third for you).
I call it a half because I consider all the events until Geto arrives the "establishing half" where we get to experience the characters, world, and themes before we get to the action.
I started JJK with the prequel manga before the main series got an adaptation, and the first part REALLY endeared me to Yuta.
I appreciate and actually prefer the way he started this off even more than the main series (which is why I think you'll like the main series a lot more), with it being slow and taking it's time to establish Yuta's and the others' characters and personalities, one-on-one in a slice of life kinda way (since In my case Yuta's situation made me connect with him almost immediately).
The fact that it was a one-shot prologue/prequel helped in that regard, the same way it did for me when I read Romance Dawn before I started One Piece, it's always fun for me to see the differences between one-shots and how their themes become more fleshed out in the main series down the line.
How you can go "oh yeah I remember this, so this is how it turns out".
I supposed it being a 6 or 8 out of 10 really depends on how much/ how quickly you connect with Yuta.

I think while I can understand your points about the first half and Akutami's approach to this story can become problematic, I guess the reason I didn't have as much of an issue with the first half is seeing Yuta grow as person. To me, Yuta's character arc was more than just "get rid of the curse attached to him", but also him being able to cherish his life and connect to people again. That's what I felt like he was finding when he came to Jujutsu Tech: rather than be shackled and destroyed because of a bond he had lost, he's forming new bonds with people who will help him be stronger. Cool vid though. Hope you see the rest of the series!

Jujutsu Kaisen is a real fun series. It does have some overly complicated powers tha require pages of description sometimes. But the creativity is something to behold. I'd say it is worth a look.
If you do end up reading the main series, this movie's definitely worth revisiting later on too. A lot of small visual things are quite cool references to mentioned events in the main series, and the manga also goes on to develop Geto's motivations quite a bit better than "im evil lol". Also, Yuta doesn't show up in the manga until over a hundred chapters in.
Really hope you continue with the series, the beginning of season 1 is going to be repetitive a tiny bit but still different enough to be enjoyable. Jujutsu kaisen hands down is top 3 new gen manga currently and will give some of the best fights and a great story to go along with it
