The 100& Blind One Piece review of the end of Wano!!!
I've covered Dragon Ball primarily for years. I've covered pretty much the entire series and so I thought this would be the perfect challenge. Something that's just crazy enough to interest me. ONE PIECE! Eiichiro Oda's magnum opus and one of the longest running and certainly most popular manga series out there. Today I'll be reviewing and giving my first impressions on Wano's Raid on Onigashima!
SKIPPY THE ROBOT - / skippyop

First time since leaving Fishman Island we don’t know where we’re heading next - and the first time since then we’re actually following the Log Pose, this goes in rhyme with the essence of what the series began with: "Romance Dawn".
Also, it is the first time in an Arc since Punk Hazard that the entire crew is leaving from an island/country together.

May I offer a different take on Kaido's attitude during the last portion of the fight?
Many people took his drunken modes as him toying with Luffy, as him showing that he wasn't worth it. While I could understand this take, My interpretation was of Kaido been more True to himslef than Luffy.
Kaido likes to drink. He brings his pot of sake in the battlefield. It's One of the strongest character trait the guy has. He's not mocking Luffy. He's Just so Next Level that his full Power Is expressed when he is the most true to himself.

I think another key element of Gear 5 is it helps a series that was beginning to get a little too serious get back to it's roots as a fun and funny action/gag manga. While series like DBZ doubled down on seriousness as it went on (and slowly grew further and further from the fun of Dragonball that made many people fall in love with it) One Piece instead says "this is who we always were and this is what we will always be" and I think that's so beautiful in an age that increasingly values melodrama and edge.

Oda introducing ALL the enemies in Act 3 is a what stretched things out. He could have at least showed a glimpse of all headliners and their names and deliver the comedic effect by revealing what they actually looked like in Act 3. All the main players should've been introduced in Act 2 as well as glimpses of the locations inside Onigashima to help the viewers familiarize before going there. The floors going up the rooftop also suffered the "sameness" of that Punk Hazard's lab maze. Jack vs Cat and Dog SHOULD have been shown. It is a pivotal moment for their characters more important than the whole ice oni fiasco.

I'm glad Gear 5 isn't what everyone thought it would be, which is an angry, buff Luffy covered in Haki with a DBZ aura. Nika is the perfect form for Luffy and for this series. When Luffy showed it off, it clicked. Oda's art is amazing, but it is pretty cartoon-y. So when Gear 5 showed up, I was like "Yeah. Of course. Obviously." Went from a Crazy Manga to a Loony Toon. Either way, One Piece fans young and old can rejoice at finally seeing the rise of a new Emperor. One whose smile is infamous and whose laugh echoes throughout the world, telling it "I am the most free man in the world!"

And if luffy's new transformation was about increasing the rage, then Luffy had just lost a major part of his character.
If then they go in the road of Luffy now can control his anger and master his form giving him the rage to unlock the form would have made the form lose impact.
Think Goku, even though he was enraged he for some reason stood still while the person who killed his best friend was powering up, instead of a pure rage showing it was his arrogant and selfish Saiyan side showing, Goku was anger for 2 whole panels before losing his rage and become a full blown Saiyan, until he knew he could take down Frieza and wanted to spare him.
If the super Saiyan was supposed to enhance his anger Goku should have killed Frieza when he had the chance mercilessly or at least toyed with him, and if ssj did do what mark said, the anger should have clouded his judgement when finding a way to escape.

Honestly it's old news at this point and people who complain about it just don't get Luffy or Oda it's that simple. The exact same thing happened with gear 4th and it annoyed me to hell then. From the very start Oda did not want Luffy to be like Goku in anyway that's WHY he has the rubber abilites. All of the abilites we've seen from him have always expanded on Oda's orignal goal to make sure he feels unique. And they always fit who he is as a charachter too, this is likely to be his last gear and so that being the ultimate version of Imagination and Freedom makes way too much sense for him.

It's just Oda having fun, it's just Luffy having fun, it's almost like Oda telling us, "Yeah I can give you an EPIC power up scene, or I can give you something, not necessarily hype, not necessarily epic or something edgy, what if I just give you some silly fun". And it's better than any other power reveal I think I wll ever experience in entertainment media ever. Curiously enough, when I first heard of One Piece, and that the protagonist had rubber powers, I imagined he was a Plastic Man-like shapeshifter ( or Jake the Dog, if you prefer), molding his body to form hammers, springs and anything he could imagine; when I watched the anime, Rufy did indeed stretch and bloat and bounce, but it was more utilitarian, less extreme than my expectations.
Then, almost 20 years later, Oda-sensei introduces Gear 5, and while the finer details may be different, the core idea behind Rufy's powers while in full toon form is the same I had all those years ago. This, in my opinion, elevates Oda's work to a transcendental level.

Gear 5 is my personal favorite moment in the series I just couldn't believe that out of all the insane stereotypically cool powers the fanbase came up with during the wait for gear 5 reveal, Oda made a very personal decision to draw what *he* wants, not what's expected of the medium. After all the legwork he's done over decades of manga creation, Oda is free to create whatever he wants. He wanted to write a story that would incite laughter. One that would spark creativity and a sense of romance in the world. Something that brings a smile to your face and widens your eyes like a child. And when all the chips were down against the worlds strongest foe, arguably *the* defining moment for if Luffy legitimately had what it took to reach his dream, Oda decided to draw the goofiest dumbest and most expressive battle he could come up with. I have a weird theory that Luffy's power was originally JUST the gumu gumu no mi.
I think Joyboy managed to transfer part of his dreams to the Devil Fruit just before he died or as he was dying. Turning what was once just a paramecia DF into this strange paramecia/zoan fruit. It can explain why Luffy doesn't have any natural alternate forms and had to work to make them. This could also explain why his awakening has a transformation element as well as to why he can make the world around him rubbery.

You don't even need to go to the Gear system to see how his powers work. He's been using this philosophy since he said his punches were pistols as a kid. However, I think the earliest example where we see it working in real time is his pinwheel attack on Arlong. Sure, it was used as a gag, but it gave us insight on the way Luffy thought of his abilities.
It's one thing I like about the abilities in One Piece, since people form the abilities to them. Katakuri for example had very similar abilities to Luffy, but had a lot more jagged fists and spikes to show his outward persona, while it couldn't hide the true fluffy interior no matter how much you molded it.
Kizaru and Eneru also showed very different applications to similar abilities, with Eneru acting more like a force of nature while Kizaru acted more as a... person with powers. Eneru would mold his attacks like the god he felt he was with giant bombastic feasts of electricity. Meanwhile Kizaru would just... point his finger to shoot a laser, kick someone really fast, or even use a literal light saber as... pretty much a kid would do to be honest when imagining themselves with super powers. It's like the difference between someone confident with a powerful weapon versus someone confident with their hands in their pockets instead of using a fighting stance.

I got to agree with the page layouts of "modern" One Piece especially since Oda CAN make really clean and easy to follow pages to read (just look at early Volumes / Chapters) but I think he has to cram in as much as information as he can so he can finish the manga faster or he would take WAY longer if wants to tell the same story but with less visual clutter.
Something I also want to add:
Gear 5 has to be one of my favorite "power ups" in all of Shonen. Seriously, the more you think about Luffys powers the more Gear 5 makes sense. I laughed so much while reading the panels almost as if Nikas power transcends the manga itself. It's the freest fighting style and the only celing is the users imagination. Gear 3 for example in retrospective makes even more sense now and the first time was revealed I literally was flabbergasted how GOOD it fits into the overall journey story / themes of One Piece - it truly is the most ridiculous power in the world. I think the very end of Wano was kind of rushed and unfortunately many thematic aspects of the story that should've been addressed just weren't. Like Yamato changing their mind, or the Kozukis admitting the people of Wano were in the wrong for chasing and ostracizing the Kurozumis.
HOWEVER, I don't understand the criticism behind Gear 5, and I think it's one of the best moments in all of One Piece, with Luffy somewhat representing freedom and liberation from tyranny, while at the same time being at heart a very simple character who just wants his friends to be happy. Sure, the whole Sun God thing seemed kinda rushed, but I think that's just a small issue when compared to the thematic and emotional significance of Luffy becoming Joy Boy. Gear 5 might be one of my favorite moments in all of manga history.

The Yamato 180 made no sense, and the whole Kozuki Kurozumi ostracizing at the end left a sour taste in my mouth, but all in all, Wano had some of the most significant and well written pieces of character and world development in the entire story, and I think it'd be unfair to not recognize that as well.

The main problem with all of Wano is its lack of interest in its own characters. Ultimately, stories are about people, and Wano was more concerned with making references and creating themed spectacle than it was in tying anything into its actors. It set up a lot of characters but had too many, with too thin of a use; as a story, it left too much up to the reader to project meaning onto what they were seeing (or the anime to develop it) instead of developing it meaningfully on its own merits. If the arc was somewhat short, this would be very forgivable.
The fact that the entirety of Wano is so indulgent in itself and wastes so much time and wastes so many chances with its characters is what's unforgivable to me. The worst part of it is that the Straw Hats had no personal involvement in any of it beyond just getting angry at what they were seeing - beyond new powerups and attacks, none of them developed as people. It feels like Oda fell in love with an idea that had more meaning in his head than he remembered to create on the page for everyone else. It could also be cultural, since Wano is so heavy-handed in luxuriating in being overtly Japanese instead of its own world; maybe overseas, it hits some button the rest of us don't have? Definitely my least favorite arc, just by virtue of how overstayed its welcome was. But that's me. Glad other people enjoyed it, but I wish they could have enjoyed it in two or three fewer years than it took.

    • @Corredor1230

Yeah, I think the length and clutter is Wano's biggest weakness. There are other arcs I've disliked more on principle or execution, like Thriller Bark or Punk Hazard, but even then I'd argue it's pointless to compare them with Wano, which is almost an entire series by itself.
However, having given it a lot of room to breathe and then catch up right as Zoro was fighting King, I do think the length seems like relatively less of a problem when read in one go as an entire arc. One gripe I have with Wano is its lack of thematic resolution to a lot of its characters, instead kind of just forgetting about them. What happened to Marco? Did the people of Wano ever learn not to ostracize an entire family for no reason? Why did Yamato change their mind like in the last millisecond? I wish those questions had been answered at all, and not just glossed over by Oda.
I do really appreciate a lot of its ups, though. I think Gear 5 is perfect for the series and for Luffy, and the powerup is incredibly pertinent and well written. I also really liked Momonosuke's arc as a kid that is forced (physically and emotionally) to grow up. And I very much enjoyed the Worst Generation in their respective roles. Law and Kid were phenomenal as foils to Luffy, Zoro and Killer got to do their part, and I even enjoyed Apoo and Drake as tertiary characters.
It's a mixed bag, but I think it gets far more hate than it deserves, and I also don't really think it's the worst we've seen in One Piece. But it definitely has glaring flaws that do bother me.

@@Phatnaru0002 I can certainly see this point of view. THough I think a series littered with the phrase "Inherited Will" has some merit with vagueness of something like that perhaps influencing a character. Though I think it's a bit reductive to say or imply that suddenly all the Luffy has done is now solely from the fruit.
Plus Luffy already Idolized and wanted to imitate Shanks BEFORE he ate the fruit so it seems pretty consistent with his own characterization.
Also bear in mind, "Sun God Nika" exists in the same world as someone called "God Enel" and someone literally on the Straw Hat Crew who was at one point in the story and still by fans called "God Usopp"
We don't know enough about Nika to completely say Luffy's drive doesnt' matter because it's just Nika's
It's implied that many fruits carry over a bit of their previous owner with them.
Is Sabo's journey invalid now that he specifically said he inherits part of Ace's will when he ate the Mera-Mera fruit?
This isn't the first time I've heard this POV and I'm not saying it's without merit, I just feel like we aren't giving Oda enough credit to just instantly cry fowl over something we don't REALLY know the full story of.
THAT SAID, I am happy to admit I'm wrong if the story goes poorly. I mentioned with my best buddy that it would be fun if there WAS some existentialism with the fruit that Luffy now had to deal with now that it was awakened. If your meaning Ghost piece or what have you where a empathesis on the dead returning theory or something like that where if you look for the clues you find them... then no I do not consider it bad yet. I think there might be stuff that Oda is setting up for later but... One Piece is long so my feelings is more alongside the thought of by series end then by arc's/saga's end.
The build up to Kaido and BM was a bit much for what we got I agree. I was expecting Kaido to obliterate all the scabards in that final match of there's; I was expecting a BM crew ambush at a critical point; I was expecting Hawkins to be a serious hinderence to the plans as he can just predict shit; I was expecting Apu and Drake to join the emperor beat down... lastly I was expecting Orochi to actually be crazy strong in monster form but no he was just an unappealing joke. Spandam levels of useless.
as a whole I can see both sides of the argument. Its bad points were deplorable its good points great; but did we really need Onigashima and a war... I say no it was excessive.
If you have seen the anime called Samurai 7 all the way through then you know what I expected from the red scabards and the Kaido fight, and the outcome. The scabards each reminded me of one of the 7 or there allies around them. Not 1 for 1 as comparison but really similar... except Kanjiro the anomally.
I enjoyed the end to some extent (meeting Green Bull, and such) but it definitely could of been more impactful and better tied into it all.

Late to the party, but- I had dropped off of One Piece as a teen, getting jaded by how Shounen treated it's Not Straight Dude characters, exploring other mediums for awhile. And I feared One Piece was going to go down the same route since all the other ones I followed did.
I heard overtime that although there is still a bit of same-design-ness to the girls, that otherwise the characters were treated with respect and weight... but by then it was several hundred chapters ahead of where I left off and I didn't have the motivation to pick it up again.
And then I saw Gear 5. Joy Boy. Cross my dash.
This design more than anything sold me on returning to one piece. I didn't know the circumstances, but to see such a FUN and creative "final gear" design, that spoke to the ethos of the show and how different Luffy as a protagonist was? Holy moly I immediately started trying to catch up.
I think it's a key thing that Luffy returns to his not-buffed-beyond-all-reason body type in this too. He's LUFFY. Just moreso! It was both such a refreshing subversion of expectations AND such a pure expression of Luffy that it captured my imagination immediately and brought me back to the awkward kid I was who wore cuffed baggy jean shorts, a red tank, and a straw hat with a scar drawn with a sharpy for "Pirate Day" as a kid.

Late to the party, but YES! That's pretty much how I saw gear 5!
From an artist's perspective, for so many years I've seen so many "don't do this, don't do that" art tips and advice that treats doing your own thing with the structure, anatomy and everything as sin. Things to avoid, as if you're "breaking the laws of art".
When gear 5 was revealed and I saw how cartoonishly silly it was and how unabashedly it was being silly, I couldn't stop smiling at every panel, because to me, it was like Oda saying "since when does art have rules? It's my story, I'll do whatever I find most fun" and it liberated my mind.
Your art is up to your own imagination. If you don't want it realistic, then don't make it realistic. If you want it to be, then make it so.
Gear 5 is, as you said, about freedom and as someone who not only artistically, but also in real life has been stuck within borders of how someone like me should act, gear 5 is to me a big, resounding "nah, screw that. Being the real me is more fun!"
If the greatest mangaka of our time can unabashedly make his most notable character into a Looney Tune, then why the fuck can't I do that to myself?
The world's dark and boring enough as it is! Let's be silly and spread some cheer while we're at it!

But all in all, I think the thematic and plot significance that Wano brought to the overall story, and the arcs of characters like Momonosuke and Kinemon felt perfectly wrapped up and I couldn't be happier with them. Gear 5 is also so amazing and well fitting for Luffy and for One Piece as a whole, that I seriously don't understand the controversy around it. Though of course, the rest of the raid felt incredibly slow and chaotic, and the actual end of Wano was very rushed and incomplete in a lot of ways.

Yamato not joining was so out of the left field that I was wondering if I missed a chapter or something. We went from Yamato being Oden and wanting to set out and join the strawhats a few chapters earlier and suddenly she's content staying in Wano?

After reading this series for nearly 4 months, Wano was a great arc, honestly the best I've read after Marineford, but I will recognize that the pacing in Onigashima was so slow, but Joy Boy's intro honestly was great!
