    The reason Whiskey Peak felt forced was because it actually was. Miss Wednesday and Mr. 9 were initially designed to be One Piece's equivalent of Team Rocket. Problem is, Oda's editor told Oda that leeching off Pokémon's popularity seemed like a bad idea. Then Oda realized Miss Wednesday looked like Vivi (who was initially supposed to be a completely different character from Miss Wednesday) with her hair down, so he retconned the story to make MW and Vivi into the same character.

    I find myself liking the first "half" of one piece much more than the post-time skip stuff because I felt like the stories were way more personal to the crew. The higher stakes and increasingly complicated plots that are focused on multiple characters that aren't part of the crew do not interest me as much. That being said, I'm very impressed at how One Piece manages to make people love both of its halves.

      Yeah, I agree that some of the post-timeskip stuff *can be* less personal. I don't really care for Punk Hazard, and Fishman Island was good, but more about establishing new characters + giving characters a chance to flex their timeskip powerups. But Dressrosa and Whole Cake are both fantastic and directly tie to both the biggest threats in the world as well as personal stories. Law isn't a Strawhat, but between him and Sanji (and to a lesser degree Jinbei), you do still get some great personal stories through the course of those two post-timeskip arcs. You can draw comparisons to Alabasta, and I wouldn't rank either of those below it.

  • @gamefreak2050
    @gamefreak2050 Před 2 lety +133

    In defense of Orange Town- upon reread it was a short and sweet arc that truly did highlight the importance of "treasure" and what that meant to different people.
    Buggy's view of materialistic treasure directly conflicts with Luffy's view of sentimental treasures. In fact, a lot of the earlier arcs in East Blue upon reread I have a much greater appreciation for because you really see the hints in Luffy's character as you go through. Luffy's moment fighting to take back the dog's last bit of dog food because he recognized the importance of his treasure still to this day is an underrated and touching scene and really exemplifies Luffy's character.
    Coupled with interesting things early on such as Buggy's connection to Shanks, potential Grandline map and intro of Nami, Zoro's badassery vs Cabaji, and the unique Devil Fruit fight of Luffy and Buggy, I actually think this arc is pretty good! But of course, One Piece arcs have high standards so I understand the placement, but I just wanted to shoutout some of the arcs qualities.

    • @AnimaLepton
      @AnimaLepton Před 2 měsíci

      The live action changed a lot of things, but I think it did a good job of hitting on those same themes. Obviously, the real treasure was the friends we made along the way, but there's so much more to it too, and East Blue in general is a very dense runthrough of aspirations, goals, and dreams for a ton of characters with some wacky powers along the way from the very beginning.

      The rest has been carried by hype that is too be expected of this arc.
      Anyone saying wano exceeded expectations or is the best arc in one piece is fucking delusional and needs to stop riding oda's dick.
      Yamato for example is the single most lazy character addition in all of one piece.
      ANd you know how I know every single thing I just said is true? Because the strawhats themselves have little to no emotional investment in the war. They aren't treating it seriously like marineford or a enies lobby or alabasta or arlong. (with the exception of the aforementioned best character moment).
      And the actual backbone of the emotions this arc has been the scabbards, which the OP community is very lukewarm on.
      Wano is a mid tier one piece arc so far. Enies Lobby/Water 7 and marineford are indisputably better in every single way.
      Anyone saying else needs to take off the hype glasses and realize hype != good writing.

    marineford is peak Luffy. One of the things I love most about one piece is how it handles the post sabody seperation. We've seen Luffy at his friends side for so many chapters. What is he when he's on his own?
    He's the guy who charms his way into the hearts of every woman on a man hating Island, breaks into and out the most dangerous prison in the world (recruiting allies and enemies alike along with hundreds of bloodthirsty pirates because this boy does not give a fuck), and DROPS A FUCKING PIRATE SHIP OUT OF THIN AIR INTO THE BIGGEST WAR IN THE WORLD and fights his way up to the three admirals and just goes come at me.

    Pretty good ranking and I adore how much you love Chopper :D . Though any arcs that are meant to clearly be multi part stories I think it's fair to put them together because they flow together as one cohesive story. Jaya's the prologue to Skypeia so it definetly deserves to be put together same as the triple threats of Water 7/EniesLobby/Return to Water 7 as well as Impel Down/Marineford/and Return to Amazon Lilly. Anyways my rankings will probably mirror yours alot but Enies Lobby is the best arc in the story for me and yes that's factoring in the three arcs that make up it's story. From world building to showing just how serious Oda can take things, as well as every Straw Hat Getting a good chance to shine this arc balances it all the best. I'd like to think this arc is Oda flexing a bit too showing that not only can he introduce a new main charachter and establish him properly, but also give important charachter development to two older members at the same time. Every member get's development in this arc but it's fair to say Usopp, Robin, and Franky have the most focus for this one. As well as still having the best fight in One Piece in my eyes being Luffy vs Lucci, that fight is so well told and crafted from start to finish. Now to be clear I am following the dub of One piece so I have not yet seen Luffy vs Katakuri yet in full but from the bits I have seen I'm super hyped to see if it can dethrone my current number one. And that's not even including all the stuff for wano that could dethrone it too.

There is a lot of foreshadowing towards Wano, Lola and Big Mom, and Moria is a much more interesting character after knowing that he once had a promising future but got shut down by Kaido. His story really helps build the grand line as this type of ladder full of people making their way up or people who have settled on a lower rung after being knocked down.

    I just want to take a second to talk about how insane it is that you have Whole Cake Island at number 4 and Wano at number 1. Not to disagree with them, far from it, but for what that means for One Piece as a whole. Whole Cake Island didn't start until over 820 chapters in. Wano is the current arc. In a series that is over 1000 chapters long One Piece isn't just still putting out really good quality work. The last 200 odd chapters, the past 5 YEARS of its +20 year publication is some of the literal best stuff in the totality of its run. How many creators can claim that? Most series tend to drop off given enough time and it isn't uncommon for people to find a series bad by the time it ends. So to be over 20 years and 1000 chapters in and not only maintain the quality of that work for that whole time, but to be improving on it and having people say it is putting out the best stuff to date is mind blowing. One Piece is an amazing series, but just being amazing isn't that amazing in my opinion. Lots of media is amazing. It is the fact that One Piece is as amazing as it is while having maintained that for as long as it has that truly puts it in a class all its own and I imagine VERY few others can share that claim.

    Great list, as any ranking of One Piece arcs would be, regardless of order. Props for having Thriller Bark on your top 10, it's so unfairly heavily slandered by the community, for reasons that go beyond my comprehension. Funny how none of my top 4 arcs made it to the top 3, though.
    1 - Water 7/Enies Lobby (I don't care what "official" sources tell you about arc division, I can't separate these two because they are too much interconnected - it's a single story, and it's peak One Piece)
    2 - Whole Cake Island (Sanji is my favourite character, and I just LOVE arcs that break the usual mold and are unpredictible)
    3 - Sabaody
    4 - Impel Down
    Wano is greatness, but it isn't finished yet, and even though story wise it's pure excellence, it hasn't resonated to me emotionally as other arcs. It'll surely top Impel Down, though, not sure about the others, my top 3 is pretty solid. As for Marineford, it's also S tier BUT it relies too much on the previous arcs, it's the conclusion to the first half of the series, which is a testament to how greatly Oda can write a story, but as a standalone arc, it doesn't crack my top 4. But ranking One Piece arcs is nearly impossible, I can't even pick a 5th. They're all great, even the ones I don't like as much as the others, like Syrup Village or Punk Hazard.

    Aw, no honorable mention of the anime-exclusive "filler" G-8 arc? It's basically the only filler arc that fans recommend manga-only folks watch because it really is just that good. Sure it's not technically canon, but it genuinely nails Oda's style and gives every straw hat something interesting to contribute while ALSO doing a fairly good job developing it's original characters that are limited to that arc.
    It's most definitely not the best arc, but it certainly blows every other filler out of the water while also being better than some of Oda's earlier work.

With earth shaking plot turn after earth shaking plot turn building up to a profound tragedy that resonates through One Piece's entire world on both geopolitical and deeply personal levels. The summit war is a feat utterly unmatched in the annals of shounen manga storytelling, in part because you'd need over a decade of buildup just to make the attempt."
    You know it's scripts like these that make you stand out so much from other CZcamsrs to me. There are many that analyze as well as you do (some even better tbh) but you're in my opinion literally the best at putting these thoughts into words in a way that is literary compelling, almost lyrically at times, but also dense with information. On top of that you have a great voice with an intonation that not only conveys your contagious excitement but also makes listening to those 30+ word long sentences pleasurable. The fact that you also manage to sprinkle subtle humor into these grammatical gymnastics is just icing on the cake really, albeit delicious, addicting icing.

    Enies Lobby will probably always be my favorite arc. It gave us Gear 2 and 3, Chopper's horrifically awesome Monster Point, the best F You I've ever seen with that flag burning.... and of course, Robin's backstory, and the always tear-jerking "I want to live." So much of what One Piece is was embodied in Enies Lobby, and it's hard to top, especially as a Robin Stan- uh, fan. But of course, Oda isn't satisfied with perfection, and somehow managed to create an even better arc, twice. Marineford, and then Wano. And idk how he keeps doing it. But I'm 100% for it. So, yeah, I can't put Enies Lobby above 3rd despite my love for it, but with Marineford being 2nd and Wano being the absolute BEST One Piece has had to offer, 3rd place isn't a bad place to be

      As someone with Enies Lobby as my favorite arc, I can not comprehend how some people think that Wano is already better than it. What about Wano makes you put it over the likes of Enies Lobby and Marineford? Have any of the moments in Wano hit you as hard as I want to live, jet gattling, or the merry’s funeral? I’m not trashing your opinion, I’m just really curious why some people love Wano so much already.

    • @KnightElemental
      @KnightElemental Před 2 lety +2

      @@californiapenguin9434 As far as making me cry, no, Wano hasn't hit as hard as I want to live or Merry's Funeral. But the beats it hits are of a different, and possibly more powerful, nature. Let me break it down.
      1) This arc deals with a whole nation being subjugated by some of the most corrupt individuals in the story, and that's saying something. So the scale is automatically set higher than just rescuing a crew member.
      2) This is the culmination of 4 arcs worth of material. Enies Lobby was the climax to Water 7. Wano has more of a driving force behind it because of how long we've been waiting to get here, and how much we understand the stakes.
      3) The SMILE fruit. Introduced in Punk Hazard, this item has finally been given its appropriately horrendous explanation as to what its purpose is, and how that has affected those in Wano. And it makes you want justice for a whole nation, not just one individual.
      These may boil down to a "everything is of bigger scale, importance, etc, in Wano", but there is so much more to it, that honestly, would take a video essay of at least 45 minutes to appropriately expound on.

Roger’s son and not actually luffys brother was an incredible reveal. The war itself is still shaping the current story.
    Ace dying will always be one of the greatest plot twist I’ve ever experienced. Oda does a great job of making it look like they’re going to get away and everyone Importain is going to live but at the last second completely changes everything.
