Dragon Ball Super has been a trip. From Battle of Gods with Beerus and Resurrection F with Freiza (Freeza) early on as the years passed we were introduced to characters like Zamasu, Goku Black, Hit and Jiren through stories like The Universe 6 Arc, Future Trunks Arc and the Universe Survival Arc.
And out of nowhere the show suddenly ended... Fast forward a few years and a movie later and we find ourselves after having received the very first manga original Dragon Ball Super arc.
And... I loved it. And the characters! Moro, Merus, and OH BOY DID I LOVE JACO! I've been extremely critical of Toyotaro and Dragon Ball Super's manga at large but after having gone back over the story all at once, the issues I had prior either vanished entirely or were much more managable. Join me today as I cap off the year with a big Dragon Ball Super review!

I believe Yamcha can be a very potential source for very good character development. Uptill now, Yamcha has been over too cocky to underestimate his opponent and let his guard down and resulting him dying to finally giving up fighting as scale got very high. Unlike Tien who still trained even knowing he would never be in saiyans league, he was atleast in TOP. But what embarrassment for Yamcha that Roshi got picked instead of him and he had low PL than him. That embarrassment enough could be motivation enough for him to train again so that he won't be far away from Krillin and Tien atleast. So an arc which helps Yamcha overcome all his character backdraw can be a very good arc even if it's a small training arc as well.

straight up. I think the author and Toriyama really underplayed Zamasu’s influence in the story.
Hell, they could’ve used his example of a “failed Kai” to justify the “defeated Universes = erasure” in the ToP.
Not necessarily saying “Zamasu was right”, but at least mentioning him and taking into consideration what his actions meant for the system of Angels Kais and Mortals as a whole. And, with the final wish by 17/ Goku, they would confirm Zamasu was indeed wrong and that mortals weren’t barbaric beings that would crumble themselves.
Hopefully what happened with Merus ends up having an influence in the universe later on, hell, the fact that THE grand priest himself resurrected him shows some trace of that impact.

I’m a Japanese dude who happens to live in America, and I want to say something.
1.The phrase “Vegeta has never been one to underestimate his opponent” is actually a little different in the Japanese version of the manga. In the Japanese manga, it says 「相手の力を知らないようなやつではない。」In short, this says that “Vegeta isn’t the type of person to not know his opponents strength”. So it’s really similar, but it implies a bit of a different meaning. It doesn’t really say that Vegeta hasn’t underestimated his opponent cuz that’s dumb, more like he knows his opponents strength. So maybe it’s more of Vegeta’s pride and overconfidence that comes into the equation, rather than him not knowing his opponents strength. If I recall correctly, Vegeta said something about wanting to stay away from Frieza because it would be bad if something happened. So he clearly doesn’t “underestimate” the evil lizard, it’s more that he thinks he can win from the Zenkai boosts he got on Namek following up to the boss battle.
That’s my take, i might really just be stupid and overthinking this, but it’s something I wanted to say. But yeah, saying Vegeta has never underestimated his opponents is dumb.
    Edit: I suck at typing

I think Vegeta usually doesn't underestimate his opponents, rather, i think his main problem is that he Overestimates himself. Vegeta is a very strategic and tactical fighter. He fights with caution, but his own pride and overconfidence get in the way. Vegeta knew Perfect Cell would be obscenely powerful, but he algo though his own strength was greater, which it wasn't. He also took Goku seriously enough to fight him personally, yet "knew" that a low class Saiyan, even one as gifted as Goku, couldn't beat the Prince. He doesn't misread his opponent's strength, only his own.

Exactly. Ki manipulation has always been a thing in db. The things they can create all depends on the character, their creativity, and amount of ki control. in order to fit the situation he was in: he needed something big to hold Moro still while he went in for the final blow. So he projected his ki into a giant avatar that could help achieve this goal. Anyone saying it’s an ass pull doesn’t understand ki.

I loved how cohesive every character was with the themes. I percieve the ultimate theme of this saga to be "Where your strength is derived" and Moro, Vegeta, Goku, and even the Z fighters and goons fit this perfectly.
Moro's strength is derived from killing, stealing, and cheating via his energy absorption and use of Seven Three, which ties perfectly into both Goku and Vegeta.
Vegeta derives his strength from himself, not cheating like Moro does. This makes sense as he has polished his own energy even better than Goku in this saga and uses his knowledge of inner spirit to temporarily defeat Moro.
Goku, like Moro, derives his strength from others, however he is motivated by his friends and makes use of their combined will to get stronger. Goku's way of gaining strength is brought into the story in the most powerful way when Merus dies, as his will finally motivates Goku to become stronger than Moro. The two are complete opposites, but this is made even more apparent when Moro recieves the very same power as Goku from the very same source, only through HIS unique means. One has trained and the other has cheated and now, as both are armed with Merus' power, Goku and Moro's strength is tested one last time and the latter gets bit in the back. Due to his killing, stealing, and cheating, Moro can't handle the strength Goku can and he ultimately gets finished off by Goku, who is literally using the strength of the friends he made along the way to defeat him.
I love the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga.

People keep comparing the senzu bean moment to the cell arc when I personally think it has more in common with the ending of the frieza arc. Goku is being merciful to an opponent who no longer has any chance of actually beating him, the previous chapter made that very clear. Hell when Morro attacks Goku after eating the bean all he does is cripple himself. Goku had nothing to fear from this man anymore, he’s ceased to be a threat. The only reason he becomes one again is because of a desperate Hail Mary that even Morro wasn’t aware of at the time. It’s not like Goku was just gonna let him go either, he was planning on placing Morro back into custody and, after Morro attacks him again, killing him. People complain about it and how it’s a stupid thing Goku did, but in the proper context it seems perfectly fine to me.

The senzu bean thing can be reconciled if you take in, the philosophical background of Son Goku's character archetype.
The character archetype of Goku, is a synthesis of Shintoism, Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism. In this case,
For Buddhism they believe in innate buddhahood for all sentient beings(which includes all evil doers like King Piccolo, Frieza, Cell, Kid Buu, Zamasu, and even Moro). Goku is like a "Bodhisattva" which, are enlightened beings who strive to get others to achieve enlightenment and awakening.
They believe in universal compassion. This is why Goku is written to be pure "kokoro" (heart) and empty minded. forgiving, as well as doing things like giving a senzu bean, or giving mercy to the most malicious beings in the universe.
Goku's character archetype is based on the central character in Journey to the West, Son Wukong. The story is about a tale of retrieving buddhist scrolls from India.
It's also apparent that Eastern Philosophy is there. Because historically, Buddhism spread from India to China and then Japan. As it spread to China. The Shaolin Monks incorporated Buddhism into their martial arts(Kung fu) as it spread to Japan, in influenced the way of the warrior, or Bushido. (Zen Buddhism)
One of the coolest things to come from Dragon Ball, is "Migatti No Gokui". Geekdom101 did a video on it's basis, which is Mushin. However, I also believe it to be a reference to a real life swordsman named Miyamoto Musashi, he founded a Zen Buddhist school of thought, for kenjutsu technique called niten'ichi (二天一, "two heavens as one") or nitōichi (二刀一, "two swords as one") or 'Niten Ichi-ryū' (A Kongen Buddhist Sutra refers to the two heavens as the two guardians of Buddha).
All of Son Goku's lessons from his martial arts masters(Roshi, Korin, Popo, Kami, King Kai, Whis, and even Merus, have all led up to his spiritual culmination, the mastery of self movement.
Goku being a pure and empty minded being, is the first step in spiritual enlightenment in achieving such a state. Goku's inner aggregates is his selfish desire to fight. He queals this desire to fight (even if temporarily) and that is what allows him to achieve Ultra Instinct.
In the East, specifically in terms of Buddhism, the primary struggle facing people is the cultivation of self and freeing themselves from the cycle of samsara. Those who selfishly pursue things will be forced to endlessly reincarnate and thus, continue to experience "dukka"(suffering) and "anatta"(impermance) until they let go of the five aggregates of Buddhism.
In Confucianism, You have a humanist centered philosophy, that espouses, the flourishing of society as being the best good. Anything deviating from this or the virtues of a enlightened individual in society leads to the imbalance and gives the impression of "Evil". that is Specifically to "way of the gentlemen" are benevolence (ren 仁), righteousness (yi 義), ritual propriety (li 禮), wisdom (zhi 智), and trustworthiness (xin 信).
However, in Shintoism, there is a struggle and balancing of kegare ("pollution" or "impurity"), while ensuring harae ("purity"). Which contradicts some Buddhist ideas of the non-self(atman)
I really think people need to understand that the Eastern Philosophy in Asian cultures is vastly different than in Western cultures.
In regards to Metaphysics and Ethics, it is night and day on concepts of Gods and Evil.
For example, Evil in the East is not a "substance" in a monist point of view. It does not have matter associated with it.
In the West, from a theological point of view, St. Augustine viewed evil as a "privation of good" he didn't believe Evil was created since that would deconstruct the presumption that a God was perfect in the sense of omnipotent, all good, and omniscient.
Also in the West, people tend to believe in a concept in Theodicy called the "vale of soul making". This would be the explaination for the problem of evil. That is, the existence of evil as a phenomenological effect, that motivates and breeds self cultivation of behavior and harmonious virtues in mortals.
The reason I added the stuff about evil and Godhood, is that people always struggle with coming to terms of why don't Whis or the Kaioshins or the other Gods, actually intervene. This is a struggle that parallels actual history in theology and is across cultures.
Thinking of these things, helps to appreciate the ideas behind the fiction.

I was thinking going along with this idea of Vegeta making up for past mistakes like he did on namek what if Oatmeel and Ganolah are survivors from one of Vegeta's previous conquests and they want 73 to take revenge on him. So the new twist on the story could be the new villains aren't strong enough to actually threaten Vegeta but he wants to avoid harming them because he feels guilty about it. Would that be interesting they current threat could be ended immediately but Vegeta won't let the Z team fight the antagonists?

I believe that this acr's success has a lot to do with Merus' character. He was really well introduced and his eventual reveal as an angel, although expectable, was pretty well handled as well.
His death, for me, was much more meaningful than Android 16's, for example. That's because he actually had a bound with Goku to begin with. I also love how that scene goes hand to hand with what Merus himself said to Goku at chapter 52, I believe. "You will only achieve Ultra Instinct when being able to control your emotions in the midst of a chaotic moment", or something like that. Everything felt way more connected and planned out than a simple rage boost.
Besides all of this, his moveset is also pretty amazing (especially as a galactic patrol agent). Not only being creative, but also unique in a lot of ways.
If I had to ask for something else from his character, it would actually be more scenes with Goku in the Room of Spirit and Time, to help convey their relationship. But that's all.

Merus was alright.. But the fact that he actually didn't die undermines literally everything about him. Say whatever you want, creating cheap shock value through a character's fake death is shitty and balless writing. I'm not saying that every character should die etc but when he came back it undermined so many things about him and even all the stress between the Grand Priest and Whis etc.
And Goku pulling perfect ultra instinct cause Merus inspired him is just.. Bleh. I have no idea why people see the character writing in this arc good, it was very basic and borderline cheap writing for the most part. Even Moro went from an interesting unique villain into Cell 2.0 at the end smh.

It also felt earned instead of a mere ass pull. After Super Saiyajin 2, I feel like every other transformation came out of nowhere (especially Super Saiyajin 4 and Blue). MUI, on the other hand, was the outcome of Goku's training with two angels. He learned how to control his emotions and there was lot of trial and error as well.

Usually Goku would just get a rage boost there, but he managed to mantain self control in order to master ultra instinct.

Suddenly Goku & pals couldn't just beat everyone to death with stronger powers, they had to race to find Babidi's hideout and reach Buu in time before he's released into the world. He's a wizard, but I never really saw him act like a spellcaster. Not like Babidi. I know not all wizards have to be frail and weak physically. I thought he was going to be more like Dormammu from Marvel or something. He's kind of interesting, but I am surprised more people didn't notice the obvious similarities between him and King Piccolo. Where both were very powerful and could not be defeated and had to be imprisoned. Then he wishes for his true power back by using the dragon balls, and also releases criminals like King Piccolo did.
He seemed to be sort of an elementalist but was more of an absorber. Dragon Balls seems to love having villains that absorb stuff for some reason. xD I was thinking that'd focus more on magic that physical attack and be what Babidi failed to be, which was be a real threat. Babidi's only main threat is that he can take over someone's mind and even that's not guaranteed. I would think he'd use more magic than ki attacks and do stuff to alter parts of reality, like Dr. Strange or something. Maybe even darker stuff like necromancy, where he brings forth undead creatures or something. That'd be something you don't see very often in Dragon Ball.
I think the saga probably could have ended a lot quicker if Goku and Vegeta just fused into Gogeta, since Gogeta is canon now. Don't even need ultra instinct when he's already on par with Beerus or surpassed him when he becomes Blue.

Very good video. It actually made me check out the manga after only having seen the anime, and I have to say this Arc feels so much better than the previous one.
Despite the whole galaxy being on the line in the tournament of power, I personally was never too invested since, how you said it yourself in your anaylisation of that arc, the "villain" was Zeno.
No one on that battlefield seemed as dangerous as most past villains, Jiren had so little motivation he was barely alive, AND the fact that even the timelimit was IN FAVOR of universe 7, are all reasons why I personally felt let down.
But this one is different. We actually have someone that not only was powerful enough, but it was also a scary and twisted individual. Moro really captured what I wanted from a villain, from an arc.

It is absolutely the best arc in Super. Seriously, the anime better only improve in the base material and not go ape shit and change everything like they did in the first run.
Yeah it has flaws, and, yes, Toyotaro being scared on taking many new takes and playing it safe screwed up potentially phenomenal moments (i.e. Goku being the one to get the W, Merus being resurrected, Moro design going from great to “Cell but with no dots” and so on).
    But, overall? Pretty damn good.
One of my favorite moments in all of dragonball was seeing Moro use UI vs UI Goku. Idk, it was unexpected and a very cool concept.
I’d rate it a 8.5/10 imo. The arc pacing and the STRUCTURE was fucking great, waaaaaaaaaaay ahead of those aspects in previous arcs, especially when considering the bad pacing of some arcs in the anime.
