  • Hi everyone!! My brother and I are here to give the ULTIMATE UCLA VS. UC BERKELEY college advice! As recent graduates from UCLA and UC Berkeley (we're both class of 2020) we thought it'd be fitting to make an advice and college tips video, since many incoming college freshmen and transfers often like to make a comparison between the two schools and the pros and cons of each.
I realize that this would probably be more useful in the spring when college decisions come out, but I made it now while we're both still living under the same roof LOL. Also I know some of y'all will be doing college applications soon so hopefully this will still be a good resource. Also feel free to save this video to watch later when you get accepted ;)
*I know we totally didn't get to cover everything despite this super long video, but PLEASE COMMENT BELOW if you have any questions about what we said or any college advice in general!*
    Here are the timestamps!

I grew up in OC, went to Cal (Go Bears!) and came out a hippie. My husband and I met at the engineering orientation our 1st year. 30 years later, my son just got accepted to Cal and UCLA. Cal vs UCLA. My heart wants him to go to UCLA because I’m back in OC. The costs is unbelievable nowadays, but the cost of UCs is still so much cheaper than IVYs or privates. I went to Cal but my high school classmate went to UCSD. Then we went to SUNY Optometry school in Manhattan. Now we are back here in SolCal. I’m in Fullerton(OC)and she is in Santa Monica(LA). Currently, both of us own our own private practices. She was happy in UCSD and I loved Cal. So congrats to getting into any UCs. In the end, college life will be what you make of it no matter where you choose to go.

If UCLA is easier than UC Berkeley, it is better to go to Berkeley since HR will hire the more motivated student at UC Berkeley. When I was at USC as a graduate student, I just don't have time to socialize at USC.

Two heavy weights. +35 fields of study with 100's of majors. Stacked with top ratings and national rankings. Despite the stats, this simple take was actually accurate - imo. Your school is a lifelong community - where in the end it goes like this - she'll marry a guy from Stanford and he'll end up with a girl from USC - and they'll do this all over again.

Engineering is definitely a focus at Cal. However we were told Cal engineers come out with too much focus on academics they are pigeonholed into designing needs. UCLA would be more well balanced with more social skills t market products after the design. Is it true lots of SC firms support clubs that promote engineering designs ? Cal has more government funding for research while UCLa has private funding?

No offense to your brother, it is still a great achievement.I was a grad student many years ago at UCLA myself. Karen, the thing about which you need to be concerned with respect to the video is how it has aged. Currently, UCB is having a huge housing crisis because of city ordinances, but they did work around the problem for 2022 by admitting a lot of spring admits, but it's something the University has to address even more in-depth in the future. Additionally, since you made this video, UCLA has become a tad harder to which to gain entry. The last time which was 2020 when UC used the ACT/SAT -- now it's test-blind of course, UCLA caught UCB in average scores, but UCLA started to pull ahead with respect to incoming-student grades. For the class entering in 2021 according to each campus's Common Data Sets, the average UCLA enrollee had a 3.92 unweighted gpa in high school, with 55.4% who had straight-A 4.00 gpas. For UCB, it was 3.867 and 33.0%. For transfers, UCLA's incoming average was 3.85, and for UCB it was lower, but I'm not sure how much. I agree that UCB has more competition because UCLA is a bit more preprofessional and even more collaborative as Jordy stated, with more of the latter's students who go to L- or M-school. So some are looking for easier majors to preserve their gpas: Sociology and Polisci (not really easy in anyway) for L; and less rigorous life sciences -- Physiological Sciences instead of Computational Biology or Biochem for M. But the video was nonetheless entertaining; I enjoyed it.
