Those planes of that era were beautiful! I love all WW2 aircraft fighters and bombers because I'm a model kit builder of aircraft! I have been right up to them in museums and the experience is unlike anything else. 🇨🇦👍🥃✌️

@? I meant more from a craftsman standpoint. A lot of labor and woodwork went into each plane.
And that's not fair. Every major country had airframes that quickly went out of date due to the rapid development and competitiveness of the war. A good example is the P-40 Kitty Hawk. Even though conceived after the A6M, it underperformed in comparison and quickly went out of date. The big difference was the US had the industrial strength and resources to keep building on the P-40. Japan, however, did not. Thus put far less emphasis on airpower. Had they had the resources, the A6M would have continued to be upgraded just like the P-40. I wouldn't say useless even in 1942. The US flew kitty hawks well into the war even after later versions and P-51s were available. Being able to launch any aircraft would be preferable to none at all. They simply didn't have the oil or the resources to replenish all those hand-built planes.

Indeed to bad japan needed metals to reinforce the structure of the plane. Instead they use wood which made the zero very agile it also made it very easy to shoot down once the Americans developed better fighting techniques. But it certainly was the best plane for the first years of its conception.
I like the Kawanishi N1K a late war Japanese fighter plane the ki 84 was also very capable.

Beautiful airplane in 1941. The Nakajima Ki 84, Kawasaki Ki 100 and Kawanishi N1K2-J certainly bested the A6M2 towards the war's end. Much materiel and manpower misappropriated towards the obsolete "0" by then and no backup system for replacement pilot training in place for the longer war. So it seems some of their military planners were about as dumb as some of ours, lol.

No it's oil from the lower cylinders...the oil consumption was a problem with this engines ...heritage from the good Gnome&Rhone designers....the France Air Ministry would never authorize the export if it was a sound design....I think that the Japanese solve this in the end. Here in Romania whe used the same engine for the IAR 80 plane and by the time production started they successfully cured the oil consumption problem...
