My favorite part of the finale was that when it originally aired, the pilot episode aired immediately after, and the ending shot of the finale faded directly into the date card in the first few seconds of the pilot, so you really were going along for the ride with them

What's still mindblowing to this day about this show: Nibblers shadow is actually IN THE PILOT!
That means that the revelation about the real reason Fry has been frozen in "The why of Fry" in season 4 has been thought out years before in the actual pilot!
Now THATS some amazing story writing!

    • @zacdee316
      @zacdee316 Před 4 lety +157

In Jurassic Bark, there is also a shot where you see both Nibbler and Fry's shadows under the desk, which is a nod to The why of Fry, where he decides to push himself into the tube. I'm not sure if it was there originally, or later added.
Overall, the writers did a stupendous job of preserving continuity. Not many shows in the genre come close, those that come to mind that do would be Rick and Morty and Archer.

I think Bender's Big Score is one of the best things Futurama's ever done, and possibly, actually even the best. It has a smart, dynamic, even trippy sci-fi plot that perfectly displays the intelligence of Futurama, emotional resonance due to the larger than life, romance element, classic, fast, witty, Futurama humour, a plot that's truly deserving of a film, unlike the others, with an epic plot spanning time and space itself, with clearly defined, powerful supervillains, and an epic final showdown that suitably gathers together the show's entire catalogue of characters due to the movie occasion. I love this film, and I definitely think it should've been the only Futurama film. Futurama works better as concentrated crazy, and the other films felt needlessly complicated, drawn out, and overlong.

I strongly agree. I just want to say that I love the show, and I loved it even after the reboot. I think that the last two seasons were . I think that the setting allows for many, many more creative ideas than The Simpsons. They've based episodes on a lot of science fiction and plain science stories.
Also, I love that there's a semi-serialized story to it. There's plenty of ideas and storylines that span the show, but you can watch any single episode and have a laugh. The last few seasons have some bad episodes, but they have some great episodes. I think there's a subtle difference. As you point out, the earlier seasons are more character driven. The later seasons are more plot driven.
It seems to me, based off of comments here and elsewhere, that people who started watching it after it rebooted or ended like the later seasons (though not necessarily more than the earlier ones), probably because they never had the reaction of "This isn't the Futurama I started watching!". I'm interested to know what other commenters think regarding that.
Anyway, it's not a show that makes me gut laugh often like South Park does. It's a show that makes me brain laugh (not to sound like a stereotypical Rick and Morty fan). There are so many cool things to enjoy, especially if you pay attention to science or science fiction. There's plenty if you don't. It's probably my favorite animated show ever, whether I judge by the high points or the average quality.

So many amazing episodes in this show. My sister introduced it to me on DVD and Adult Swim years before its revival ever happened. I loved episodes like Luck of the Fryrish, Jurassic Bark, the one where they went back in time, and others (though I wasn’t a huge fan of the giant brain ones)...
The movies were 8-10/10 for me depending on the movies, and the episodes afterwards were pretty spot on for me. I loved how Zoidberg got a love interest, how Amy and Kiph eventually ended up, and then there are the best episodes of the series revival era...Game of Tones and Meanwhile. Game of Tones made me cry like Jurassic Bark did before Bender’s Big Score ret-conned the sadness we saw Seymour going through, and Meanwhile was a fantastic way to bring the series to a “close,” and go around again...which makes me want to binge the whole series on a continuous loop. The way they brought it to an end was amazingly epic, and while I miss the show terribly, I’m glad it’s over, and not producing new shows like The Simpsons or Family Guy just because it can.

Futrurama is the perfect example of ending a show before it goes on for too long. It's ironic that it's made by the same people as The simspons

  •  Před 4 lety +2

Futurama's always been one of my favorite shows. I love how every character has an actually interesting backstory and the massive potential of a large list of characters and scenarios, yet it doesn't stretch a lot with them like other series do. They manage to create emotive, yet funny situations that are scientifically proofed (sometimes) and can play with a lot of things without getting outdated beacuse it's backed by the series' logic (like having various characters' heads alive on jars or making ridiculous future predictions and current world problem satires about things like global warming or technology dependence). It is truly a magnificent piece of animation, and it has even surpassed The Simpsons in many aspects.

When I saw that you'd done a "Day BLANK Died" vid for Futurama, my heart sank! But (spoiler alert) after hearing your last sentence, I am all warm and fuzzy... I couldn't agree more with your words, and I love how well you've said it. Another great video here!

Yeah it felt like they could have used their time and intelligence elsewhere. But then they're making more money writing cartoon which we very much enjoy. At the end of the day, they still help humanity in different ways.

Great video! Considering you talked about how Futurama is a character development focused show to some degree, due to its light serialisation, as opposed to The Simpsons, I think it's worth noting Leela's evolution as a character, which I think often gets overlooked. Leela started out as a very no-nonsense, serious leader, and gradually became more relaxed within her workplace. This evolution occurs through season 1 to 3 I'd say, and is done subtly, so that it's not noticeable until you bring attention to it. It was impressive and cool to see - As she became acquainted with her job and community, she allowed herself to loosen up.
