Problematic F1 Cars - 2009 Ferrari F60

  • In a new series where I go over some of F1 teams worst or most underperforming cars I figured I'd start with the first one that came to my mind, the 2009 Ferrari F60. The absolute pinnacle of automotive engineering and innovation. Or at least it could’ve been. Now if you’re already familiar or if you happened to be watching F1 back then, you might be a little confused. After all, it won races! Well, one race, but still.
Piloted by none other than 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen with Filipe Massa by his side. It may go down as one of Ferraris worst ever cars.
Worst f1 cars. Best f1 cars. How are Red Bull so fast. Red Bull rb18 rb19. Cost cap.

To be fair, Ferrari was so deep in the 2008 championship fight with Lewis and McLaren that they could not fully devote their resources early into the 2009 project. And because they ran with KERS that year it made it very difficult to implement a double diffuser into the F60. Considering the external factors they could not control, they did not have much a chance for 2009.

the 2014 F1 cars were all bad to drive with a significant cut to rear downforce and a large weight increase due to the hybrid system

So Ferrari cheated because the FIA stopped their opponents from cheating? makes alot of sense.
They did not simply change the tire rules on a whim to help Ferrari. The Michelin tires were not in compliance with the regulations. Had they been in compliance all year long, Ferrari and Michael would have won both championships more comfortably.

Aside from a lack.of refinement in the aerodynamics, a big problem with the F60 was the driveability of the car.
Unlike McLaren, the only other team to record a win (two in their case) with KERS, Ferrari mounted the Motor Generator Unit and Energy Store for the system under the fuel tank. On paper, this kept the heavy weight of the KERS equipment as low in the car as possible. But in reality, the car was unpredictable to drive as the centre of gravity varied depending in the fuel load. While Massa and Raikkonen could cope with the characteristics, as you'd expect from two high quality drivers, the awful injury for Massa in Hungary and the ban on in season testing led to the driveability issues coming to the fore.
Long time Ferrari test driver, Luca Badoer, after Michael Schumacher ruled himself out due to a neck injury, was drafted in for the following race in Valencia. What little onboard footage of him at the wheel of the F60 exists, shows how unprepared he was for stepping up with no chance to drive the car before Valencia. The result was in both Valencia and Spa, Badger had the unfortunate distinction of being the first Ferrari driver to qualify and finish last for races on pure pace. But even when he was replaced by the star driver from the Belgian Grand Prix, Giancarlo Fisichella, the third driver of the #3 Ferrari didn't qualify better than 14th for the rest of 2009 from Monza to Abu Dhabi

A poor car when it came to results, and was a catastrophic failure considering its championship-winning predecessors, the F2007 (WDC/WCC) and F2008 (WCC). The F60 could be seen as a stripped down F2008, equipped with KERS and adapted to the 2009 regulations. The car initially lacked any of the novelties that defined '09 season. Was this down to lack of imagination due to Ferrari being so heavily committed to developing the F2008 right until the final race of '08 season(?) The F60 was also subject of a relentless development campaign that saw many micro upgrades that allowed Massa and Raikkonen to get decent results, with the race win in Belgium being the highlight. The Ferrari F10 benefited from this development until it too was caught out by the novelties of 2010 season, and was left playing catch up to Red Bull.
Nevertheless, the Ferrari F60 has aged amazingly well. The clean, sleek and elegant lines of the car contrast heavily with the cars that followed. It is far and away the best looking Ferrari of the (09-16) 'skinny wing' era.

  • @bartomiejczerwinski5897

There was no wheelbase regulations in 2009 (or in any year up to 2022). If cars were shorter, it was for performance reasons. Also, Massa was hit by a spring, not a shock absorber.
Your description of Ferrari's changes in F60 conflates the changes forced by regulations with those decided by Ferrari. It was not Ferrari that decided to remove much of the center element from front wing, it was FIA. All cars were like that.

They designed it to have the "totally legal" 2019 power levels (if not more) so put a boatload of Aero on it to just power through the drag that would create.
In the super secret deal, which wasnt that secret because it was obvious (have a shite engine for a year) they had a car with no power AND alot of drag.
and to top it off most of the tracks where it would have been half decent (monaco and Singapore especially) were cancelled due to covid.
