Just How Bad Was NYCK DE VRIES In F1?

  • Nyck Devries got a pretty bad wrap from his time in Formula 1, and I wanted to take a bit of a deep dive into his performance race by race to see for myself just how bad Nyck really performed.
Not even making it to summer break in his first full F1 season, Nyck Devries would get kicked from AlphaTauri after only ten races. But just how bad was he really?

From what I can recall, Nyck was nowhere near the pace of Tsunoda in Monaco, Tsunoda was ahead of Lando and Piastri in 8th place, if I am not wrong. Unfortunately, Tsunoda suffered a brake problem and he lost a lot of places, including one to Nyck and finished 2 laps down..

Yuki was also one of the many victims.of the wild track violation penalties in Austria which were extremely inconsistent and weren't being relayed to the drivers as they occured, thus they drove the race thinking they were legal.
Both of NDV's finishes above him were lacking context in this video a little, although the video is very good.
Of course, I assume NDV had issues of his own this season as well which were perhaps forgotten as well, albeit I don't recall any significant ones.

When people talk about F2 winners they must also look at what happened during that season and before. Yes he won F2 . The person who came second was Latifi. That tells you it was a weak year for drivers. In addition this was his third year of trying by Nyck. Mick Schumacher is another example of a driver taking two years driving for the best team who scraped the title without a pole , a fastest lap. and just two wins. He was 12th the year before. Take Lando , he came second aged just 18 but was a rookie beaten by George who was also a rookie aged 19 and driving for a more successful team and three rounds before the end they were within six points of each other. He beat Albon, Devries , latifi etc . Lando had won five championships as a rookie back to back but his second in F2 is held up as a criticism.
So its all about context and who they were competing against. Nyck is a nice guy but was never more than a number two driver in reality even with an F2 title. When they get to F1 they are found out.

    Great video as always!
I definitely was one of the people that had really high hopes for De Vires and I feel bad for how his F1 career ended. However, it has to be said - Nyck is not a rookie. He may be new to F1 but he is older than Max and unless he showed immediate results I understand why Red Bull didn't want to keep him. They're looking for a) real rookies to bring up to speed and make F1 superstars b) an already great driver ready to be paired-up with Max and fight for WCC in 2024 which may be a much tighter season than 2023.
PS: I'm also still holding-up hope for Sergio. He may have had a few bad results, but the way media and general fanbase are treating him is very saddening to see. I'm not defending his results but he may still be Max's Bottas and that's all that RB needs - a reliable 2nd driver that will bring enough points for a comfortable WCC next year.

ok so then why the fck out of all people bring DR back? This doesn't make any fkin sense at all. Plus your reasoning doesn't make sense for de vries because a) rookies with F1 superstar potential will clash with max and b) already great drivers aren't going to be put in a low tier car like AT, they'll most likely end up in the midfield. I can't think of an already great driver being hired in AT or, back then, toro rosso to be promoted to Red Bull again. Either great drivers end up in the midfield untill they retire or retire immediately. Pretty sure they hired de vries only to fire him and replace him with DR so they get extra publicity. Because why tf would AT hire a fall-from-grace can't drive with a mclaren-andy like daniel ricciardo?

I don't know how things were behind doors, but because Marko said what he said, it felt like AT and RB lacked commitment. Some people seem to expect De Vries to outperform Tsunoda just like that. Nyck has experience in other/lower classes, but I think F1 is quite a big step up from those classes.

the thing is they weren't looking for a young promising driver to give them time and make them comfortable, they already have Yuki covering that
they were looking for someone who can replace Perez after his contract and if things go wrong potentially sooner and DeVries was supposed to be that: experienced enough to not make rookie mistakes but still new to the sport and grateful enough to not upstage Max's position
and when DeVries wasn't even performing at Yuki's level they went for a safer option that was Daniel Ricciardo and i kinda understand them

@@crispybanana3198 Mmh, interesting. It might also (at least partly) explain the difference in opinion between Horner and Marko. Though I think it's not reasonable to expect Nyck to perform at the same level as Yuki. They are just too different. To be honest, I think Yuki has more market value to RB than having another Dutchman. There has to be something that compensates for Yuki's immature tantrums. I like spirit and emotion in F1, but his temper is just not productive. With all the coaching going on (he also seems to dislike physical training?) I can't imagine they would find that worth the investment if there was no money or exposure involved.
With Max as the star for years to come, all RB needs is someone who is willing to play second fiddle and bring in decent money from sponsors. And keep things hot enough to continue when Max leaves.

I think saying De Vries wasn't good enough is a bit stretched. In absolute terms, yeah he wasn't good enough for Red Bull tastes that wanted to put a fire under Perez's ass but at the same time when you look how patient Red Bull was with Tsunoda for example, De Vries definitely wasn't judged as a formula one rookie (and on some part he kinda brought this upon himself at the start of the season). I think he was perfectly capable of matching race pace of Tsunoda (and even Ricciardo) but the Red Bull environment wasn't going to make any compromise for a mercedes driver and it clearly showed. I believe it would've been the same with Mick Schumacher (and any of those 2 going into AT would've given the same result)

Saying Nyck "shined" in his junior career is BEYOND generous. He spent three years in F3, and only won that title bc LeClerc forgot what pace was in the second half of the season. He then spent three years in F2 getting beat by LeClerc, then Russel. After that he went into his... sad FE career, barely winning the title on his second go with his first and third years being almost pathetic. Then he went to F1 after driving three different cars in one weekend and showing some pace. The fact that his best finish was P12 and only finished ahead of Yuki TWICE showed he just didn't have pace. 10 races is enough to judge pace when you have 11 years in open wheel racing and the two people who whooped you savagely before you got lucky for your titles are in top teams. Even if that AT is the worst car on the grid, he had zero excuse to be as far behind as he was. Yuki was making him look like he'd never been in the same room as an F1 car let alone driven one, and in terms of incidents even Logan has a better record and he was pulled out of F2 a whole year early AT BEST. On top of Piastri catching up with Lando's pace in the same amount of time it took De Vries to get booted? Yeah. No sympathy. Even if you consider that Yuki got more time, that's bc Yuki was FAST for the car he had when he could keep it out of the wall (and he had good financial benefits). Nyck was not fast, nor did he provide the financial benefits.
Also he was not close to Tsunoda in Silverstone quali he was damn near half a second off and then finished the race almost 2 full seconds behind.

  • @twanvoerman8781
    @twanvoerman8781 Před 5 měsíci

The problem in my opinion was that because De Vries had so much racing experience in other classes, he was under a lot of pressure. Which in itself is normal, but due to the fairly normal start to the season, he just didn't had time to really prove himself. Because every result behind Tsunoda was just super bad according to the media (while Tsunoda was in his 3th season), and that created more pressure. Nyck just couldn't prove himself in his own way, which is constructive and keeps getting better through out the races. And in my opinion I think it is a strange choice to replace him mid season, why just let him drive a whole season? He deserved that. But also why with someone like Ricciardo who already has so much experience and has already had a chance to show himself in F1. And after 2022 Ricciardo wasn't a strong driver. Then put in Lawson who is young and with a lot of talent. That is more than fair in my eyes.

I mean he definitely didn't do enough to KEEP his seat. Not with RB already having DannyRic as their 3rd and chomping at the bit to jump back into an F1 car...obviously he'd prefer the mainline RB but the AT would be better than nothing. De Vries made way more mistakes than it seems just in this video, not even close to all of his mistakes resulted in crashes. He just wasn't good. He wasn't Nikita Mazepin or GOATifi levels of horrendous, but hes not what RB wanted and expected when they put him in that seat. If he had only had one major crash and otherwise stayed closer to Yuki, he'd still have a seat. Daniel has managed the car just fine, when he's not bring hit by other drivers, and hasn't had any of the same issues so it's not like the car itself is responsible for De Vries earning his nickname Debris...otherwise Yuki would also have been struggling to stay out of the wall and off other cars. When RB saw how Nyck couldn't keep pace with Yuki, or even really all that CLOSE to Yuki, he was done. They gave him enough time to show them SOMETHING and the only race where he performed even adequately, in RB's eyes, was Monaco and they took the context of 1) its Monaco (which really is just a test of patience and qualifying) and 2) it was raining so the pace of the entire field was extremely slowed down compared to a dry race. And really Monaco was the only race where Nyck performed as expected. So contextually they had enough information to know that they were sure he wasn't what they wanted in that seat. Particularly since next years AT is going to be much closer to the mainline RB in terms of performance. If Nyck couldn't handle the current AT, he would likely be even worse with a car much quicker and with much higher expectations. So all in all, dropping him made perfect sense. Particularly since they had an ultra popular driver waiting to fill in in the form of Daniel. Nyck was only bringing negative attention, Yuki and Daniel bring positive attention. It's an easy decision. Nyck may be better off filling in as a 3rd driver if he can for the rest of the season for other teams, but he clearly needs more time in an F1 car before being signed to a full time seat....so they can perform an in depth analysis of him when he's all alone on the track to see if he has what it takes. Most F2 drivers never make it to F1 anyway. And since RB demand excellence he wasn't ever going to sticking around there

De Vries is not ready for f1, before you attack me, let me explain why.
De Vries while being a 3x world champion, 2x in F2 and 1x in Fe, he isn’t ready for the struggle and the absolute cut throat racing of F1, that is not to discredit his skills in any way…
Lets look at his qualifying and race finishes, not good… was he given too little time? No, I personally don’t think so, has shown pour results, been basically under the radar even had some incidents, compared to other rookies, piastri is doing incredibly, sargeant, in my eyes, should also be out of contention and possibly devries should be given his spot.
He started making errors when he was fighting for position, not something an F1 driver should do normally, “normally” because when a definitive fight is happening and its an important fight right on the line, every driver could make a mistake.) while i want to defend De Vries, all of his fights were regular F1 fights and he shouldn’t be making errors.
Was red bull hard on their decision? Probably not, De Vries showed talent in F2 and was expected to preform, this has nothing to do with the team by any means, since F2 is all about DRIVER SKILL, which he just hasn’t shown in F1, even if F1 is about the car, skill is still involved.
In my opinion he isn’t ready, not in pace and not in the mentality that is needed, and neither is Sergeant.
He is not cut throat enough, he isn’t able to handle the cut throat mentality.
He isnt able to handle the pressure and he isn’t able to handle the pace.
And let’s be perfectly honest, look at that graf, and tell le honestly that a team like red bull would want a driver like that currently.
If you tell yourself that he’s preforming decent for a rookie then please look at a mirror, because no he isn’t
He’s a goddamn 2x world champion in F2 which requires skill, you’d imagine that he’d at least carry that over.
The reason why, is because he’s too hung up on the F2 championships, he still imagines the other cars as equal, that is why he goes for insane moves and doesn’t keep up, he imagines that he’ll eventually catch up due to skill, yet he won’t.
He made mistakes and he didn’t preform up to red bulls standards, he didn’t preform up to his own skill, he made mistakes that were unprofessional compared to his skill.
Would he ever be capable of racing F1, yes I absolutely believe he is capable of that, just not right now and i think red bull made the right decision, he just isn’t mature enough yet and sadly enough he isn’t good enough yet, even if his season continued, he wouldn’t have done good, i know i make a lot of people angry by this, but learn the truth.
NO HE WOULD NOT HAVE DONE BETTER HAD HE CONTINUED HIS SEASON.
    and that ends the conversation.

I believe his time in F1 came too late. Still remember back in 2010 when we already heard news of this guy. Never had a chance in McLaren, to be in the young development plan being 24 is not promising at all. Then he left to Mercedes, won Formula E and even had a chance to prove himself with that 9th position in Monza, with a Williams. Remarkable. Mercedes should have loaned him to Williams instead of Sargeant, and AT should have promoted Lawson or even Iwaza. And in this scenario, I think De Vries would have had more time to settle in. Marko is a toxic character. I don't like that guy at all. Hope he gets sacked soon, what a terrible figure to have in a team. He only puts pressure and gives 0 fcks about the driver's mental health. We forget sometimes how hard it is to earn a spot in F1.

The most important problem is that de vries is 28, and at 28 you dont have much space for improvement, and they still took him as a rookie cuz he was a champion in other categori, but the we saw he was nowhere near yuki, that isnt verstappen, so yeah of course 10races to adapt is not a lot but when you are suppose to be an experimented driver you cant spend that much time off, so i would say he was very bad for he should be, like i think he is not far from sargeant, but sargeant is 5years younger, was nowhere in f2 so no one was expecting anything and most of all is only here cuz he is american, so in a team when you are looking for new good drivers, and when you have 3drivers for a seat, and some other like lawson, right here, hadjar not so far, you cant lose time with a season off,

Might be an unpopular opinion, but: De Vries is extremely underrated. After Monza '22, everyone was quick to label him as one of the next superstars of F1 (I did as well), but the problem is, that race was a very specific case to take conclusions from, as he was driving a terrible car, that performed well in straights, in a track that's full of straights. Had Albon raced that weekend, he would certainly score points. But then De Vries unfortunately gets put under the wing os Red Bull, and we know they tend to not be patient with their rookie drivers.

"in 2 different series" sure, one being a feeder series.
"shined in both" hardly. he was mediocore in both if you watched it not just checked wikipedia. his formula e title winning season was BY FAR the worst out of anyone, overall a weak performance, and he was always the weaker merc driver. and in f2... well he only won in his third season, which was one of the worst if not THE worst f2/gp2 grid ever, with his title rival being latifi. all at the age of 24 which is very late in f2.
his monza performance was more down to luck and the cars abilities than anything else. capitilized off penalties and williams' straight line speed. sure he did good not to crumble and bottle it, but thats about it. was it an f1 seat worthy performance? absolutely not.
