    I knew Alpine were in the wrong the moment Szafnauer started yapping to any and all media about 'loyalty', 'integrity', 'what we are owed', etc. It was clearly a pathetic attempt to gain allies from the outside. The fact that they continued to publicly villify a young driver who was in the right all along, speaks volumes about them as an organization.

      "In the right", if Alpine effectively got that Williams seat for 2023 is pretty questionable. Other comments too are stating how much of a shame it is that Piastri didn't get a drive this year, but Alpine doesn't have as much traction as Mercedes or Ferrari, considering it doesn't have any client team anymore. Piastri did snub a 2023 Williams drive that Alpine had gotten him after all, which in this saturated driver market is already something good.
      I want to see the man drive as much as anyone, yet while Alpine certainly dropped the ball with its drivers there, they didn't let him down as much as he wants everyone to believe.

    Alpine didn’t fully commit to Piastri or Alonso, so they lost both to teams that would. This is only Alpine’s fault. Piastri chose a McLaren seat over a Williams seat, shouldn’t be vilified for any of this. Bizarre that alpine gave Ocon a mega contract and let the others slide

    • @gogox98
      @gogox98 Před rokem +3

      Agreed. Nothing against good ol' Ocon, but he has been getting destroyed by Alonso. Even though Alonso had most of the misfortunes (a few DNFs not due to his fault and at least 2 races with engine problems, which lead to power loss, not to mention the hydraulics dying during the Austalian Q3), the points gap between them is extremely small.
      It is frankly ridiculous that they wouldn't commit to Alonso for at least another 2 years. Why they wouldn't commit to Piastri is also beyond me, considering how much money they pyt in him. Piastri + Alonso would have made way more sense as a team than Ocon + anyone. Idk why Alpine assume they can have, statistically, a top talent and just let him sit on the sidelines for multiple years.

      No shade to either of them, I personally really like Gasly and think he's better than people give him credit for, but he's no FERNANDO ALONSO, and neither is Ocon (kinda proven by the fact that Alonso routinely outperformed him). They wouldn't commit to two great drivers, so now they've ended up with probably the most mid driver lineup for 2023 (aside from maybe Williams). Thus, any driver that Alpine approaches is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. Saying yes and getting the support provided by the team makes it easier to rise up through the junior series, but saying yes also means you probably won't get an F1 ride with Alpine. Worst thing for Oscar is he's really in a rock and a hard place now before he even starts his rookie season... as you said, this whole mess will affect how teams look at him so if he does poorly with McLaren, he may never get a seat again; he pretty much has to come out firing on all cylinders and be able to sustain that for at least the majority of the season.

    Honestly, the more information that becomes known, the less inappropriate Piastri's response to all of this seems. Szafnauer can talk all he wants about loyalty but every person who follows F1 even a little bit knows damn well that teams aren't that loyal to their drivers... and Szafnauer and the other teams know it, too. Drivers without a contract don't owe teams anything, especially when the team are the ones that put themselves in that situation in the first place.
    I sympathize with Piastri, being jerked around by Alpine who want to keep him on the hook while they take their time deciding what they want to do with their other drivers. The guy wanted to take the next step and found a team willing to give him the chance. Then Alpine turns around and announces him as a driver for next season when *they don't even have a contract signed.* AND without even discussing it with him first! What else is Piastri to do but immediately correct the misinformation put out by Alpine?
    The paddock may talk, but with how the situation unfolded I think most people rightfully understand that Alpine completely botched the whole situation, and I really doubt any team is going to look negatively upon Piastri in the future because of this... especially if he proves himself a worthy driver.
