A Custom Offset Handle On A 1300g Trento Felling Axe

  • A custom hickory handle made according to the design philosophy outlined in our blog post, "The Balanced Axe." As can be seen, the poll-less axe now balances along a unified axis before the adze-like neck offset, laying dead horizontal when held with only a single finger of each hand. And contrary to the thoughts of some, it holds up just fine in chopping.

being from the austrian alps, just very close to northern italy, and into axes, I am so glad to fins this here. I collect and use axes a lot, and was always intrigued by these seemingly ancient designs i found on ebay in italy, france and austria. all have their legitimacy and now with that handle, which design made lots of sense in my carving axes already, its a winner. is it steam bent?

Just cut from good straight-grained board stock! Hickory fibers, like
most hardwoods, only average 0.95mm so the risk of breakage due to cut
grain is negligible. Steam bent would be the idea, of course, but so far
has proven to be a "nice to have" rather than a "need to have"
providing the base wood used is of sufficient strength with good
continuous grain through the neck. :)

experience shows what works and we wanna keep it affordable right! hickory is known to be the only wood which can be made into a bow even with cut growth rings on the back... so much about them growth rings not coming apart under tension! cheers

I haven't had a chance to use my Trento yet. I can see that the new handle design might aid in a twisting motion to pop chips. The nice thing is that the handles can be easily changed to suit. I have a new adze handle to try this if I see the need. Thanks for always looking for ways to make improvements. Clay Strong

It's less of an aid in popping chips (you can use a similar motion with the stock handle without issue) as much as to reduce the required amount of mindfulness that goes into the technique of your swing. It's not hard to swing on the stock handle with accuracy, but it's even easier and more automatic with an offset neck. :)

Thanks for the info. It will be fun to play with after I've used the stock handle some.

Just cut out a blank for a fellow for his Trento. If you ever end up
wanting one of these just shoot us an email for pricing/availability. :)

is she any good for hewing flat sides to logs ? Obviously ,having excellent penetration as you demonstrated, it would be a good axe to use for juggling or initial rough stock removal prior to hewing flat with a delicate broad axe, agree ? Can I shorten the factory handle to 28 inches like a forestry axe) ? thank you for demonstrating its effectiveness.

As I stated in my email, you can shorten the handle either by cutting down a handle or making your own. Of the models that Rinaldi produces and we carry, this, the racing axe, or the Cadore axe would be your best choices for that kind of work.

Hahaha--thanks! It's been like that for a while now; I just usually don't have my face in frame 'cause it's not the important part.
