    During Xmas of 2021 our outside lights were connected to the same outlet as our sprinkler system…around 2 am when the sprinklers went on I guess combined with the lights it tripped the outlet and it wasn’t until that March when I realized the sprinklers had been off since early December…here we are in April 2023 and the yard is finally looking better…now that I found your channel I am excited for the Summer…greetings from Champions Gate, Florida

    Perfect timing on this video. Seeing a lot of “What’s wrong with my lawn???? It’s getting brown in areas....” questions on forums and Facebook. 92.3% are simple lack of water. People (including me) often forget to grab the lowest hanging fruit first.

    The drought in GA was rough these past couple weeks. We're finally getting a TON of rain. My backyard suffered because I didn't water it (I can't afford to and the front yard is the main stage). I did notice that the drought absolutely fried a bunch of weeds I still had in the back and the grass is coming back strong. Best form of weed control...drought stress.

    But you can also change nozzles on your heads too as you fine tune each head. I use rainbird and Toro. Nozzle packs are cheap as well as tools to change from say.3.0 gpm to 5.0 gpm or vice versa

    My lawn looks a lot like that first dry one as not only did I not get significant rain in May, but my irrigation well went dry. Need to replace my above-the-ground pump with a submersible for these times when the water table falls. Hydretain helped, but it can only do what it does when there's dew in the morning. Have listened to the Florida Gardening Show since Gill Whitten was the host. Have missed the last two weeks and @The Lawn Car Nut sneaks in. A podcasting I shall go.

  • @nickcoad3763

    Few things:
    1: Don’t forget that zones overlap. You’ll need to run both zones to test the overlap area.
    2: Amazon sells rain gauges specifically for this. Think I got a 10 pack for $15.
    3: It would be fun to see you adjust the sprinklers, change out nozzles, etc to really dial it in.

    • @nickcoad3763
      @nickcoad3763 Před 5 lety

      A couple of my bigger zones run for about 75 minutes to throw out a half inch. It’s completely normal.

    • @nickcoad3763
      @nickcoad3763 Před 5 lety

      It just depends on what you’re flow is. I have two zones that are about 1500 sq ft each. They take about 75 minutes for a half inch with 6-8 gallons per minute.
      Just measure it out and start using that to water and the grass will come back once it warms up. It can take 1.5” plus to keep your grass green when temps are in the 90’s plus everyday.

    • @nickcoad3763
      @nickcoad3763 Před 5 lety +1

      Assuming you’ve got the flow, you can always switch out the nozzles to up the gallons per minute. Either way, it’s not a race. Just get a half inch down each time. Doesn’t matter if it takes 20 minutes or 2 hours. Just make sure it’s not so fast that it’s running off.

    Thanks for the great video, Allyn!
    I was sitting here trying to make sense of the fact that the diameter of the catchment vessel would cause quite a variation in your results... for example, if you used a 5gal bucket instead of a tuna can it would take far longer to fill it up to 1/2".
    I fired up ye ole' Google machine and found that according to NOAA, the most accurate rain gauge opening is 8", but 4" is still 'quite accurate'. (I'm still left wondering how they arrived at 8" being the standard, but I digress...) I don't have any tuna cans at my house, but I googled that as well and it seems that a 4oz tuna can is about 3 1/16" in diameter, and a 6oz 'salmon' can is 3 7/16" in diameter.
    I suppose 3-ish inches in diameter is close enough for this type of work. 😊This was just the result of me being curious and satisfying my need to 'figure it out'.
    That said, if you're using those 10-packs of yellow plastic rain gauges from Jeff Bezos, you may want to do some math to figure out how much 'indicated' rain you need to get an 'actual' half inch in there, if 12.56 square inches of area is 'quite accurate' (pi* r squared-- 3.14*4) and 50.24 square inches is the 'most accurate' (3.14*16).

      I'm in a similar situation. Some of my sprinkler heads are broken so I have certain areas that don't get enough water. I barely know a thing or 2 about lawn care 😂 let alone messing around with my sprinkler system. So I bought a rotating sprinkler that attaches to my hose. Problem solved. Now if I could only figure out how to get someone to install a 2nd water faucet in my backyard so I don't have to haul around my 100 ft hose constantly back and forth that'd be great 😂

    Wouldn't mind a sprinkler system where you put in info such as Zone, Zone Layout, how many sprinklers in the zone, Sprinkler head, which Nozzle type is in the sprinkler head, how much water do you want to put down, then based on that sort of information the sprinkler system will make water timing recommendations to put down the amount of water you want per day, or per your schedule. Then, if it were to rain, it would take that rainfall amount and adjust your next timing for the next scheduled day/week.

    Question regarding shading: If a tree blocks out the sun on half of a zone and the other half is full sun then the full sun area should get more water to deal with evaporation, correct? Would the best practice be to water the full sun area more by changing the head so that the shaded area gets 1 inch per week and the full sun gets say 1.25 inches per week?
