    Great video. It's so tempting to water at night especially if the grass is showing signs of needing water. I'm going to push myself to stay the course this year and trust the process. This video reminded me that i still need to dial my sprinklers in so I dont over/under water. We are looking at 🌡hot weather next week. Thank you..I 👍🏻

    With all the steps it takes to have a nice lawn and mowing most likely being the number one step to do correctly, watering is probably the most abused step for a lack of a better word. It is done so incorrectly by many and you have simplified it by getting a rain gauge. It is not the cure all but it does tell you how much water your lawn is getting when and if it does rain. For nothing else at least when it rains you know the coverage is good :)

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  Před 3 lety

      Couldn't agree more. People really abuse the watering part for sure. That simple $3 rain gauge takes so much of the error out of it. And you're right, can't beat the coverage of a good rainfall. Thanks so much bro. Always appreciative of your feedback!

  • @willward1984
    @willward1984 Před 3 lety +2

    Just got the same exact rain gauge myself a week ago. Tried to download rain meter apps, etc but weren’t sure if they were accurate. No I know how much rain exactly with the rain gauge. I figured I would have to angle it when measuring the sprinkler but a tuna can is probably easier for that. Love the content!

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  Před 3 lety +1

      Nice! Yeah, I'm skeptical of the apps too. Unless the reporting station is in my neighborhood, there's no way they're accurate. Can't get more accurate than a rain gauge in my back yard 👊. Appreciate ya watching and dropping a comment.

    Quick question, where exactly should you put the tuna can in the trajectory path of the sprinkler? The half way mark? As in half way from the head of the sprinkler and the very further point it reaches? Thanks again for the amazing content.

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  Před 3 lety +1

      Good question. I played around with the tuna cans every time I watered. Closer to the sprinkler there tends to be less water, while further away you can get more. Every sprinkler is different it seems like, so you just kinda have to experiment with it to get an idea of water output. That's the frustrating thing about watering. It's not exact and we want it to be because we're trying to get that 1 inch. I learned awhile ago to just be happy with somewhere around an inch. Thanks so much for watching and the question. Really appreciate the support!

      I’m not too picky on sprinklers. I’m only using an oscillating one at the moment no matter the area I’m watering. I like the ease of adjusting the spray pattern. Gives me flexibility regardless of the space. I find that the one I use is really even. Here’s a link to it (not the same brand as mine). I think they’ve rebranded, but it looks just like this. On the subject of night watering, it may not apply to everybody but down here in Central Mexico where I live I've been night watering my mom's lawn at night for the past 40 years and never ever had fungal issues, so why do I water at night ?
    1.- water pressure, water pressure during daytime is nearly zero so sprinklers won't run.
    2.- if there is water pressure then it's too hot to water the lawn during the daytime, I bet half of the water you dropped evaporates
    3.- I have plenty of time to do it.

    So any advice on how to water a newly seeded lawn (1 month old) when the weather forecast shows 30-50% chance rain mid afternoon and it might not even rain (has been happening where it shows rain and it barely comes down or not at all)... the weather here in NJ has been so strange the past two months. Driving me insane trying to evenly grow grass from seed. I have lots of patches that are starting to fill in that I had to reseed bc I’m sure the original seed died due to super high temps with minimal watering the first two weeks. I tried my best bc my yard is a rectangle but with circular pattern sprinklers water didn’t always get everywhere well.

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, it has been a strange spring everywhere it seems like. Sorry to hear you're having trouble. My best advice would be to water regardless of what the forecast says. Unless it says 80-100% chance. It's so important when seeding to get enough water, so it's worth the risk of doubling up. You may have to reseed the bare areas and water, water, water. A lot of lawn care is doing your best and fixing the rest. No shame in that. Keep on trying until you get it right. It's all a big experiment sometimes. That's what I love about it. Appreciate ya watching and the comment. Good luck.

  • @liquidmocofilmsllc4915

    It’s amazing to me how Lawn CZcamsrs haven’t a clue.
    It is a lot more complicated than that. The first and most important thing is your soil composition.
    You need to get a good understanding of Saturation, Field Capacity, Wiltering Point and Total Available Water.
    I’ll give you an example. If you water deep and infrequently in mostly sand soil you will take your turf into the wiltering point for too long so your grass will struggle. Why? Because water in sandy soil leaches a lot faster than other soils. You need to keep the water (soil moisture) within field capacity and wiltering point (total available water/TAW) for as long as your type of soil will hold it in that range in the root zone. And then water again. It’s like keeping your tank full of gas without letting it run out all the way.
    Also , your grass maturity normally dictates it’s root zone where you want TAW too be.
    And also, this guy states that frequent small waterings simply evaporates? Then mentions how humans need water for health. So imagine being in the full Sun all day without any water… even if you just drank a two good drinks of water during that day it would help right?
    I have a cool season grass in my backyard planted in 89% sandy soil. I live in far west Texas where we have plenty of over 100 days during the summer and mostly high 90s the rest. I water 50 minutes Sun, Wed, Fri in the morning and twice a day every day for 10 minutes late morning and early evening dictated by the suns position on my grass. I have seen my grass stand straight up during the 10 minute waterings as if it is thanking me.
    My point being is not everything is the cookie cutter regurgitation as this guys would like you to believe. If I watered my TTF twice very deep like this guy is suggesting then I would have dormant or dead grass. My sandy soil simply can’t sustain total available water in the root zone for very long with the sunlight, high ambient temps and leaching.
    One other point to complicate more… Watering too much (deep watering) to the point saturation loses water to leaching faster than at field capacity. Volume and weight of the water have something to do with it. Gravity just pulls it down.
    Rain water is different. Usually rain comes with a a bit of lightning activity which creates nitrous oxide and naturally fertilizes your grass. Nothing compares to rain water.
