I recently added a vortech blower, hci package 47lbs injectors and a Ted Jenkins custom tune (sct chip)on my stock computer.. car runs great!! Very smooth Drivability. But back in the day on a different fox,i ran the same setup no chip and 30lbs injectors and a fmu and it ran like a freaking champ.

I have had only 2 Foxbodys. But turned many of wrench on them. U speak truth as always. Back in the day u went HAM with Mods and folks beat on those things soooooo hard. No tune, no failures unless it was completely careless or neglect. Should be zero hate comments or thumbs down, but as u said. This is the internet. Foxbodys 4 Life!

A few years ago I ran a MegaSquirt on a stock 93GT with a 76mm turbo and 60# injectors(to use later on built motor) and it ran great. Several years ago I ran a flip chip on another Foxbody. I've went through more nitrous than most dentist offices use in a lifetime......👍👍

A lot of people overlook a properly designed fuel system. Trying to push 255lph pump through tiny lines is asking for trouble. You can always hear a stang with a 255 in the tank. It's loud as hell.
Why? Because it's trying to output it's rated flow through tiny lines. This causes cavitation as the lines are the restriction and not the fuel pressure regulator. Then you get a false fuel pressure reading and throw an adjustable fpr on it and now youve screwed the flow rate if the injectors Put in a 155 or a 190 and it's much quieter.

Probably one of the best videos Ive seen on the subject, been around these cars since the late 80s and everything you say is spot on.
What has happened to these cars is a new generation of young enthusiasts are discovering these for the first time and they were raised in a tech age so everything to them has to be some electronic wizardry, remember we went to the moon with computers that didn't have half of our current cellphone capabilities, unless your throwing a huge amount of air/induction into these cars they will run just fine with what they have.
Ive always been in the "no tune" camp guy i guess just because i just enjoy my Mustangs and i'm not romping on them all day long or looking to get north of 500 horses,in other words i want them to last and i dont wanna be in a garage every other weekend working on them.
If you have a Mustang thats stock and you have a slightly bigger engine and some mods and are just wanting to enjoy it dont go rooting around that computer, leave it be,just a hornets nest waiting to be disturbed, i do believe in widebands specially with mods, they are a valuable tool, nothing make me happier than to see a Mustang like this with a stock airbox, all those cold air kits and underdrive pulleys and ignition boxes are nothing but a gimmick, now if you have the Mario Andretti bug and you like going fast and you have a nice paycheck then by all means go study up on the tunes and the chip and the squirts and buy you a twin turbo setup and take her to the track!!

Great video!! You make alot of great points. Tuning has become an obsession to me..the tuning experience for me has been alot of fun and pain lol as ive stated before i have 1993 coupe ive owned since i was 22, im 44 now. If you could go back to the mid 90s to early 2000s and sell these videos they would be the hottest thing since sliced bread. To the younger guys starting out now, watch these videos, the re watch them lol be thankful theyre here. Back in days we had books! Mm&ff was our bible, thats how we learned of new and improved parts were coming out. Ive tried alot of different intakes from ported stock to cartech boxes to my favorite, the explorer.. then i got into nitrous. Best day of my life lol..finally around 2005 i got a set of afr 165 heads, and after many years of beatings the crank snapped in my stock 302. I bought a used motor from a guy added my afr heads, good old e-cam (lol) and my new favortie intake the holley systemax. Ok heres where i should have started but..in early 2006 i bought a new vortech v1 s trim kit from summit. I added 30lb injectors c&l 80mm draw through maf and a 255 lph in tank pump. These kits come ready to run on safely on these cars. The fmu adds the fuel and the msd adjustable retard box allows you to dial in timing. This kit worked good untuned, like stated in the video at wot it ran like a raped ape, but as far as cruising around it had some bucking issues and the ford idling issues. But i tolerated it because it wasnt my daily and i raced it alot so if wot was good i was good. After making and installing an intercooler set up the bucking got so bad..the car got probably 8 miles to the gallon on the interstate. It had a severe tip in problem and would peg 10.0 a/f while cruising down the interstate. So around 2012 i became dead set on getting it tuned..but i am constantly changing the car and i wanted to know everything that was going on, so i bought an aem wideband( a must have) and bought the tweecer r/t tuning hardware and a laptop and jumped right in. The BEST advice i can give on tuning, if you really want to learn it, is read read read, make small adjustments and read some more. Tweecer is complicated to figure out, as in theres alot of adjustments in it and that can lead to more mistakes. You will only use about 30% of the adjustments to dial in a basic 400 to 500hp boosted set up. I fought it for years and my car starts and idles better than it did with just a cam and intake..Gets good gas mileage and has really good drivabiliy..and the 302 is still running good, even after the beating on nitrous then boosted since i installed it in 2004. There are alot of nice entry tuning set ups out there now. I just ordered the terminator x foxbody kit a couple weeks ago, still waiting to receive it..I am gonna through the a9 and tweecer into thw woods when it gets here..i am beyond excited to mess with it. Im already reading on it and i downloaded the software and learning it. Sorry for the long post, but like you said people talk and never have messed with a car in the depths we do.

Pros and cons, street car drive ability start up ect..mass air all the way in the hands of one experienced. Lack of good tuners in the foxbody world today, maybe lack of passion and time doing so. I think one thing I have run across with them both which is important before tuning is making sure there are No Vacuum leaks and that all is in good working order. Otherwise you chase your tail in the tune or end up tuning over top a problem.

Great video, very informative, I was under the impression that you really needed an expensive aftermarket ecu like haltech, pro-m, Holley, etc. to be able to run heads intake and cams and such. I'm shocked to learn your pop's supercharged car isn't tuned even running 30lbs injectors. My old 93 5.0 thunderbird lx back in the day had a bunch of little cheap mods done to it ("the hot air intake"+ air silencer delete, msd distributor cap & rotor, msd coil, accel wires, E3 plugs, ported MAF housing, an egr block off plate made from the aluminum from a beer can, I also at one point put a plug in the vacuum port of the fuel regulator I had read online you'd get a few pounds more fuel that way) I never did get it tuned it idled slightly rougher than stock but it surprised quite a few mustang and ricers on the street. For an AOD car that was heavier than a mustang it drove pretty good.

I was pretty much tuned better then factory with a h c I setup. I noticed more response and power with no changes to parts. The only issue was at idle with cold temps 50’s or below surged a little. I recommend ensuring that your car is running well prior to installing any ecu. I’m now doing on3 kit and have started to setup my tune with a friend. As long as fuel afr and timing tables are conservative you should be good till a dyno tune to get it more aggressive.

another great video.. but i can tell you from experience you can get away without having a dyno tune (with a pretty healthy street blower combo)..the addition of a wideband is great.. you can tune the afr by adjusting fuel pressure ..what you gain with a tune is better low rpm driving and fuel economy and then find more power ...adjusting the timing, using a good "recalibrated" mass air and adjusting fuel pressure is all we had back in the day..my combo is a 306, comp XE274 cam, GT40 intake Windsor sr heads, pro M 80 R mass air Paxton Novi 1000 around 9-10 lbs, 42 lb injector...etc idles at 950 has ran low 11's @122 mph with very very low timing on pump 93..i do feel i could have can go 10's with this combo...>>i get 9 mpg though

Now with that being said, I installed a set of thirty pound injectors and it was running a little rich and ruff,at first anyways.
Until I got the thirty pound air meter to go with it.
Seems to be running, pretty good, but with that I got some issues I need to take care of before I can really get it out and drive it around.

Hci, injectors, pro-m all with factory ECU, maybe a "chip", I've seen guys at 500hp on a stock ECU. That being said, you can always get a little more with a tune. It smells like it's running rich bad, but engine runs strong. I'm sure a tune would help it, but what exactly get's changed. Example, my Bullitt had a hand held with loaded tunes. Will the tuner basically on the Fox just add a chip to make it run more efficient with better HP and cut down on the bad fumes? This was actually being discussed yesterday on FB pages that I started. Mine's being tuned right now. I've got Trick Flow heads and intake and a Lunati cam. I bought the SCT chip a few years ago from American Muscle, which came with the BAMA tunes on it for my combo. It wasn't ideal, for sure. I'm having my local tuning shop retune the SCT chip... bringing it in, mine was running lean. The tuner said he's gotten my cold start issue fixed and the car is running smoother now that he's worked on the fuel. So basically I had to pay for the chip and then pay for a tune to get it dialed in. The peace of mind will be worth it in the end for me. If you got the chip, maybe it would be all you need and get you in the proper range, but it's possible you might still need it tuned in person.

    • @Riffs_Garage
      @Riffs_Garage Pƙed 4 lety +5

I tune my car with a Moates Quarterhorse. The most important thing on a fox with a stock ecu is dialing in the maf curve. Most likely the reason your car smells rich is because it's actually lean and ecu is over compensating with fuel trying to get the mixture right. This is most always caused by the maf curve being off. If you're running aftermarket injectors and a "matching mass air" there's always a chance that the "calibration in the meter is off". I always recommend getting a good meter from pro-m or getting a quarterhorse and tuning yourself if you're on a budget. I have a CZcams channel that I'm going to use to cover tuning with a quarterhorse. But like BREW2L I'm thinking about selling all stock stuff with my 80mm c&l and quarterhorse and buying a microsquirt.
