  • Landon Donovan scored for the U.S. in injury time to give the Americans a stunning 1-0 win over Algeria at the World Cup.
Brilliant call from Ian Darke, one of my new favorite sports commentators. "You could not write a script like this!"

Probably, but he had a POINT TO MAKE.........Bear Bryant dismissed Joe Namath from the team because he had a rule about no drinking during the season, it was the CULTURE OF THE TEAM that mattered more than the damned drink, if he let Joe Namath get away with it then he lost the TEAM because he was big on discipline, that is why he won 6 National Titles and could have won four of 5 more if he had the Yankee votes (The Northern AP Voters were biased for Yankee Teams).
So,the point is, Donovan wanted to PLAY FOOTBALL, he had women problems etc. etc. But to be a Champ, you have to be dedicated, if he let Donavon get away with half-stepping, then that creates a BAD PROCESS. So, in away, he was right, but for the team, he was wrong..........He should have set the team down and told them, I am going to bring him to Brazil for YOU GUYS........Not because hes worthy of coming. Then after that, he will never ply for me again. In Germany, losing one man means nothing.

We would have been a much more dangerous team in brazil and a bunch of the petty nonsense from the jurgen klinsmann era of us soccer could have been avoided. The year leading up to the World Cup, Donovan led a rather inexperienced side to first place in Gold Cup while taking home the golden boot and MVP of the tournament. Led the team in goals, assists, and chances created. Dude was averaging 1.8 combined goals/assists per 90 mins(A US SOCCER RECORD!!!). THEN bags a goal and an assist vs our bitter rivals Mexico IN THE VERY GAME THAT QUALIFIED US FOR THE WORLD CUP. HALF STEPPING?!? On what planet is this guy not worthy of coming to the world cup?!? On what planet is someone who has a goal and an assist vs Mexico not in our top 23. On what planet was he not worthy? The truth is Jurgen created a bad process all on his own and we would be here talking about something much different and much more enjoyable had the most productive player in us soccer history been our super sub in Brazil. It should have been Donovan coming on the pitch at the end of the Belgium game and this should be obvious to anyone who has watched 2 seconds of us soccer.

I'll never forget the events that led to and culminated on this day, Wednesday June 23, 2010. The previous week was finals week of my freshman year of high school, but I missed 3 of my finals on that Thursday & Friday because my dad and I drove from LA to Pebble Beach after my classes on Wednesday the 16th for the US Open that Thursday through Sunday. To make up those 3 missed finals, I reached an agreement with my teachers to take one final each day the following Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. That Wednesday the 23rd, the match started at 6 AM my time. I had to be at my school at 8:30 to take my last final, so I knew I had plenty of time to watch the match then take the just over 5 minute walk to school. Both my parents had to leave for work at halftime so I was left to watch the 2nd half by myself. I knew, as we all did, that the USA had to win or they'd be eliminated. So in the 90th minute, when Landon Donovan, the star player of my hometown LA Galaxy, received the outlet from Tim Howard and streamed forward downfield, I knew this was a, if not THE, last chance. Then when Clint Dempsey got stuffed by the Algerian keeper, I jumped up and yelled so loudly in disbelief. But my yelling turned into a cheer of exuberance when my hometown hero slotted home the match winner. I screamed and cried tears of joy as I first ran across the couch then all throughout the empty house. As a huge fan of sports in general, this goal was the greatest sports moment of my then 14 & 1/2 year life. Ian Darke's commentary of "Go, go, USA!" still resonates with me and I get goosebumps every time I hear/think of it. After coming down from such a euphoria and regaining composure, I looked at the clock and it was 8:25. I then had to sprint to school to get there on time for my last final (I walked in the room at 8:29). I then proceeded to ace my final which secured my A in the class. So overall, June 16-23, 2010 was one of the most eventful and memorable weeks of my life, capped off by the most important goal in US Soccer history.

How does Julian Green who never got a game in before April, John Anthony Brooks who hasn't even had any impressive performances in USA shirt, a paltry Beckermann, an underwhelming Bedoya, a Timmy Chandler who barely partook in quailfying, a Brad Davis, and a Yedlin get in over Donovan? With all respect to the other guys, and I do understand Klinsmann is trying to tie the Germans to the United States for good, and I know it's slightly dumb to compare a winger to central midfielders and defenders getting in the side, but why get rid of Donovan? He's a national hero in the soccer world. I grew up watching him, and when he's on the pitch for USA, he fills me with pride and joy. It's a shame the way he's been treated under Klinsmann even when proving how instrumental he is in last year's tourney.

It was also interesting how Donovan was listed as a forward coming into camp when he has historically excelled at right or left mid positions. Which in that case will make the point I'm trying to make moot, but the most perplexing one on the list for me is Brad Davis. If he ends up getting a crucial assist, goal, or plays well (although I dont see him getting much playing time) I won't question Jurgen's decision. Comparing the two the only advantages I see Davis having over Donovan is that he is slightly better at set pieces and he helps out more defensively. But then, Donovan is a great passer and is pretty darn solid on set piece deliveries. When the 70th minute rolls around I won't feel very hopeful when Davis comes in as a sub as opposed to Donovan. I hope I am wrong. At any rate, I will be cheering my USMNT on come June 16th. Heck, come May 27th when they play Azerbaijan in a WC warm-up game.

If you watched the first episode of ESPN Films: March to Brazil his head wasn't in it, he admitted he wouldn't be able to play well after training so hard. Donovan is a legend but an underachiever, he could've been so much better if he stuck it out in Europe. I respect Klinsmann for making the decision, he's looking out for our future not what someone did 4 years ago.

    • @DelaRosaB123
      @DelaRosaB123 Před 10 lety +4

I totally agree, but before I say anything, I want to see what happens in Brazil 2014. If we have a campaign similar to the french campaign in 2010 then perhaps Klinsmann made mistakes. Klinsmann is looking at the youth of america, if you are familiar with the german soccer doctrines, the reason why Germany is now one of the top international teams is because of the outstanding development of their youth. Hopefully Klinsmann's decisions only makes the USA soccer team better and more able to compete against strong teams like Brazil, Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina, etc.

Senor Sota Senor Sota, then I suppose you didn't watch his performance in the Gold Cup only 10 months ago, the only American attended Competition worth speaking, with the exception of the WC qualifiers - including the clincher on September 10th v Mexico? Yup.....MVP at Gold Cup! and Goal / Assist in that final qualifier for LD. BTW, Donovan broke his U.S. MNT points record for a calendar year with 24 in 2013 (eight goals, eight assists), so the "age" argument doesn't work here either. No, this is an ego play (from Klinnsman) - nothing else makes sense. If for nothing else, LD's WC experience and ability to finish under pressure, should have him in the final 23, no debate necessary. And by the way, Underachievers don't reach the status of "Legend", so your comment makes no sense here. The US are a better team when he is on the field, even at 32. The US are going to have a heckuva time getting through with, or without, Donovan. Their chances would have been better if he was there. Big mistake from Klinnsman - Nuf said.

That was a great pass to Dempsey to make it all happen. Come to think of it Dempsey came very close to scoring three goals today. I hope Donovan ends up back with Everton. He is such a joy to watch.

i love how they always have energy to score in the end and you
can tell everyone on that field played their hearts out
and the GOAL! omg it takes only 4 ppl out of 11! awesome
throw from howard(my #1 goalie) donovans quickness and
hustle to keep going for the ball following up takes lots of work
especially running half of that huge field(#1 usa player) and the work from
altidore and dempsey is also great without both their work no goal. and the whole team=great! awesome team this year. hope!

It almost makes me glad that the refs made yet another ridiculous call and took back the goal Dempsey scored in the first half. The way this game unfolded was simply unbelievable. We had so many chances and just couldnt get the ball in the back of the net, and for Landon to punch that deflection back in the 91st minute just made it that much sweeter. Unbelievable heart and determination shown by the US team and we're moving on. Ghana will be a tough match, but I feel our boys will be ready!

Ian Drake capsulated this just so perfectly. It will live on as one of the greatest moments in American Soccer! That being said Landon Donovan cemented himself as one of Americas best player ever to grace the game. Although we will miss him terribly this Cup, it is exciting to think that if there are 22 players better than Landon, we might just have a chance at the group of death!!
    GO GO USA!

There were not 23 players in our pool better than LD for Brazil. He led a relatively inexperienced side to first place in 2013 Gold Cup(while winning MVP of Tourney and Golden Boot). Dude was averaging 1.8 goals/assists per 90 mins the year leading up to the world cup(a US soccer record)...Then he bagged a goal and an assist vs our bitter rivals Mexico in the very game that qualified us for the World Cup(here we are 8 years later and we haven't beat Mexico since). On what planet is someone who plays a big role in beating Mexico to qualify us for the cup not in our top 23????? The decision to leave him off the roster was only to soothe JK's ego in the short term. I love Wondo, but it was Donovan who should have been used as a SUPER SUB in Brazil, this is painfully obvious. A lot of people would be in a better place right now- LD, Wondo, JK, Juilen Green, our fan base- all included.

This is my America! Engaging the rest of the world on their terms and showing we can play and win at the global game...with grit, determination, and no ego! We still haven't forgotten what good old fashioned American pragmatism and teamwork can deliver. Compared to the embarrassing, diva-like behavior of some of the other teams, these guys are truly inspiring.
I'd like to personally thank all of our friends (and maybe even newfound fans) from around the world for all of the congratulations.
