Specifically running away from the reality of being the avatar.. One of my favorite episodes is when katana and sokka get sick and aang has to wrestle with the guilt. This is exactly how I felt with multiple scenes in the show, like when Aang is able to fully pull himself out of the Avatar state when he discovers the destruction of the air temple. All he has to do is think back to his mentor and he can suppress his rage. In the original show, his rage consumes him and physically pushes Katara back. Katara talks to him about her own experiences with loss and talks him down enough for Aang to be approachable once more, where she takes his hand and fully takes him out of the Avatar state, showing that Aang has no full control over his true power and needs the help of friends to guide and ground him (plus the determination of Katara to get back up and try again to help him etc.). But nah, Aang is a genius monk able to do it all himself... what a joke or a script lol

      @Ayla7650 Před 2 měsíci +30

I guess it could only be explained by supposing that it is common knowledge that the next avatar had to be an Airbender and that another one was never born. So by that you could assume, that the last Airbender avatar must still be alive somewhere. So when she saw an Airbender, she thought "huh, guess he must be the avatar, since he is the only Airbender we've seen in forever". But yeah, it is still ridiculously mentalist of her. Who would put all that together in like 10 Minutes

And when an Avatar is reborn, no one really knows about it except at most word of mouth, which you're not gonna get alot from the southern water tribe because it doesn't get a lot of traffic. Granted even if she noticed he was an airbender, that doesn't mean he would have been the Avatar because he would have been too young. And its clear in the show that Sokka's sexism was a part of an established culture of the water tribe when they went to the North pole and saw that women were not allowed to learn fighting. It appeared because most of the men left and the women remained in the south that the women took more dominate roles, but I still think they shared similar culltures in that regard making Sokka more of a cultural problem than anything.

They're practically skipping character development. You're forced to be accepting and 'respecting' from the very beginning regardless of the natural circumstances in the location and time period of the show, never earning it. Just following a doctorial path that was set to you. Such ideal paths are artificial when it isn't based on learning and growing but simply following it. Reminds me almost of that anime when there was a program to literally destroy consciousness in the population in order for a ideal world. Void of complaints. A lifeless utopian world.

I asked chat gbt to give me a summary of the first season of Avatar and this is what it said.
The first season of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," also known as Book One: Water, follows the journey of 12-year-old Aang, the last surviving Airbender and the long-lost Avatar, whose destiny is to bring peace to the world by ending the Fire Nation's war against the other nations. Aang is discovered frozen in an iceberg by Katara and Sokka, siblings from the Southern Water Tribe. As they travel, Aang learns that he must master the elements of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air to defeat the Fire Nation.
The season chronicles Aang's quest to master Waterbending, starting with their journey to the Northern Water Tribe. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including run-ins with the Fire Nation, led by Prince Zuko, who is determined to capture Aang to regain his honor. The trio also encounters other characters, such as the rogue Earthbender Toph and the mysterious Blue Spirit.
As they progress, Aang and his friends face complex moral dilemmas and experience personal growth. The season culminates in the Siege of the North, where Aang and his friends defend the Northern Water Tribe against a major Fire Nation attack. Aang taps into the Avatar State, merging with the ocean spirit to repel the invaders. The season ends with the Fire Nation retreating, but with hints of greater challenges to come, including the rise of a more menacing antagonist, Azula.

    -Inferiority complex with Zuko
-Throws a hissy fit and nearly burns someone in rage (regular color fire, btw)
-Needs to be stopped by Mai and Ty Lee
In the original, we are promised a much more scary villain. Someone who is capable, manipulative, and incredibly intelligent. That's because... She is.
In the remake, however, we meet a spoiled brat who fails at even just buttering up her father, and reacts so emotionally she needs to be kept in check by those around her.

One thing I love from the original's pilot episodes was how Sokka and Katara explained waterbending. Katara starts to say, "It's not magic, it's waterbending..." like she's about to go into an expository spiel about it, but then Sokka cuts her off and mocks her for it. But in mocking her, he ends up explaining waterbending himself. Then, just a couple of minutes later, Katara gets frustrated with Sokka, and we get this neat shot where we can see the water all around Katara follow her movements. At the height of her anger, she accidentally destroys a large iceberg with her waterbending, which presumably caused/allowed the iceberg that Aang was trapped in to surface.
First, they made fun of shows that like to just throw exposition in your face, then they told us what waterbending is, then they SHOWED us what waterbending is, all the while establishing the personalities and relationship of these two characters, before seamlessly introducing Aang. It's fabulous.

Damn even in episode 8 they made katara the rey skywalker of the show. Not sure what you’re talking about.

The first book is a little slow, but by the time you get to the end of the series you REALLY appreciate where it comes from.

Zuko and Iroh maybe yes but the main 3 characters just got lost on me. I just couldn't understand their essence. There was so much happenning in such a short time so I couldn't connect to the characters or feel their emotions. Or even the destruction of the war that had been going on for a 100 years... Part of the problem I think is that there are less episodes and longer episodes. They merged multiple episodes together and also completely removed story lines.
episodes usually follow natural progression with a climax of the story somewhere in the middle and then the resolution at the end. they didn’t do that well for the combined episodes, they didn’t actually combine them properly into 1 story they were just two or three separate stories in the same episode. Which makes the longer episodes useless in several cases.

Man, they did Gyatso dirty in that first episode. When they see his body in the original series his skeleton is sat against a wall, looking almost meditative, while the ground around him is absolutely covered with the corpses of dead firebenders which he presumably killed before succumbing to his own injuries. In the live action he knocks a few grunts to the floor, then dies screaming at the hands of a single firebender.
They did the same thing with Iroh, too (and presumably Bumi, but I missed that episode). The dude fired off a few missed shots to scare away Zhao at the Spirit Oasis in the live action, whereas in the original he managed to body 4 soldiers and forced Zhao to flee in the space of a few seconds. The old masters got no respect in the live action.

They seem to have a hard time with that always, like when they used to go the other extreme, when they adapted those Superhero comics back in the day and made everything super gritty and such. While here they try to stay faithful to the source material, so everything just looks like plastic, basically like in the cartoon, which gets away with it, because it's a cartoon. Like you think there has to be a way, to reinterpret the clothing of the cartoon in a way that they on one hand are still recognizable as such, but on the other hand still look realistic. Like it also kind of defeats the purpose of a live action adaptation, what little there is, when you try and make it look as close to the cartoon as possible, might as well stick with the cartoon at that point.

@@amanette Honestly, after watching other live-action remakes, vibrancy and plasticity don't really bother me cause it feels like it reflects the comicky nature of the original animated show. I also had similar feelings about the special effects cause sure they're not hyperrealistic but all things considered, it seems like more of an intentional art style, and kind of reminds of c- and k-dramas set in a false historical time period. Especially looking back on other pieces of media originally geared towards a younger audience which have come out in recent times, I'm happy it hasn't been dulled down, cause it made the show more visually interesting imo. To be fair I was never expecting realistic costumes out of this, and am just happy that as a whole the pacing isn' t totally shot and while the overall tone is more serious it doesn't seem like it takes itself overly serious or is going full-on grim dark.

Live action creators didn't want to copy paste the animated series as it is and few of the plot changes made by them are pretty good and welcoming as well. I did enjoy watching many of the changes (like Azula and Sozin's intro) as they offered different and fresh perspectives.
But it has its own demerits as well:
    1) Characterisation is something that was extra ordinary in the OG series (Aang was goofy yet wise and brave but here he is shown to be always frightened and somewhat coward, Katara was passionate, strong willed but here she almost carried the same expression throughout and why on Earth did they tone down Sokka's sarcasm. He was such a lively guy.) Honestly actors playing main characters seriously needs to improve especially Aang and Katara. (PS: Maria Zhang’s acting stood out for me as she portrayed her interest in Sokka quite perfectly. Actors playing Zuko, Iroh and Ozai acted brilliantly as well.)
    2) And why is the casting overloaded with Chinese origin actors? The main theme of the original series was peace and harmony between extremely diverse nations. Probably this is why the original creators left this project sighting creative differences.
    3) The OG creators had excluded visual references of the genocide against air nomads for a purpose as it was meant to be a kids show. But in netflix without such restrictions they could have explored it much deeper and it would have been fresh for us as well. I was expecting to see more of Aang's past and the wiping out of air nomads. The genocide portion could have been longer considering the effort they had put to show it visually. At least 1 episode dedicated for it would have given ample time for the buildup. However it lasted only for 25 odd minutes so it felt rushed to me.
    4) There is no suspense at all in the writing. Everything was just direct and linear.
    5) This has very less humour than the animated one.
Comparison with original is inevitable as the bar is set so high that it's very difficult to match those standards. So considering the above mentioned issues, the OG stands miles ahead than this live action at least for me and I wouldn't agree with anyone calling this as better than the original itself..

The reason Aang went into the Avatar state at the Air Temple is because he was hopeful that the Air Nomads had escaped from the Fire Nation, that just because people hadn't seen them, it didn't mean that they weren't in hiding. When he came across his dear friend Gyatso's skeleton, he realized that everything he heard was true... that all his people did in fact perish. He felt immense guilt from his decision to run away when he could've been there to help, and this combined with the grievance of his people led him into the Avatar State. He realized that he is indeed the last airbender. But the live action took all this content away.
There was also no bonding between Aang with Sokka and Katara that led them onto "saving the world together" in the live action - Sokka wanted to hand Aang over to the Fire Nation even after finding out he's the Avatar... like what? Katara shared her grievance when Aang had his outburst in the cartoon- she was there for him. Both her nurturing personality along with her unwillingness to forgive her mother's murderer made her who she was. And the live action took that all away from her...

The show falls into the same trap that I’ve seen a lot of new shows fall into is they don’t seem to understand “show don’t tell”. There’s SO much exposition that there’s no place for subtlety or to leave the audience to fill in the blanks. (I’ve especially seen this with Netflix)

Gearing the remake towards an older audience really dumbed down the character’s original personalities into serious, mature, and frankly boring shells of their former selves. It was also announced before the show’s remake that the creators were making Aang more “serious” , which takes away 90% of this character that we know and love from the original show.
His goofiness and curious personality is what made the original episodes so heartwarming and funny, and the team’s shenanigans so comical and cartoony. Maybe making everyone more light-hearted would’ve brought back the 2D animation “magic”.

*My biggest issues are only two:* how they portrayed Bumi, and they completely benched Avatar Roku. Avatar Roku is a critical character to the overall lore. It's one thing to have Kyoshi be the narrator of the intro, which I did like. Her voice is amazing, but to take Roku's big possession scene and give it to Kyoshi, AS WELL as give her the dialogue of what the Avatar is...I can't get behind that. Avatar Roku had personal stake in this whole venture, Kyoshi did not. It makes sense for Roku to essentially raise and train Aang as an Avatar so Aang could be better than he was. The two have an incredibly close connection in the OG. To remove that here? I can't forgive that.
Then there's his whole personality shift in the remake. I don't know why CS Lee decided to go overboard on the humor. Yes Roku does have a sense of humor, but it's kind of like Dumbledore's, subdued. In the animated version, when Roku says "What took you so long?" that tells you everything you need to know about the past life, because of how it was delivered. He's kind, warm, inviting, has a playful side but would probably only show that to those he's close with. He's stern, but not overly harsh. He comforts vs berates Aang when Aang is at a low point. He doesn't yell even when he and Aang disagree. He's wise and that came from him traveling all over the world. He understood people, listened and heard them.
To bench Avatar Roku now, is going to create huge writing problems for them later down the line if they do get a season 2 or 3. There's no relationship between him and Aang, and that is a HUGE misfire.
Then there's what they did to Bumi, turning him into a bitter man who berates Aang for something outside of his control, just like Avatar Kyoshi, which is something she wouldn't do. People too often think she's like the Punisher of ATLA...When in reality she's more like Wonder Woman in terms of personality.
What they did with Bumi and Avatar Roku _infuriates me._
And yet I can't get THAT mad at the WHOLE show cause there ARE really good elements. Such as seeing Avatar Kuruk for example, more sides to Azula and Iroh, seeing more of the Air Nomads was wonderful, and the actual Genocide itself was not just epic, but tragic. June was fantastic. The action is wonderful, the CGI incredible, the costuming is incredibly on point, it's nice to see COLOR again in fantasy.
It sits at a C for me. Average.

Sure it had some explaining like the intro, but usually just enough to get you interested without being boring. In the live action intro for example, they added a bunch of extra stuff that 1. Og fans already know so it becomes boring and 2. New fans would’ve found out anyway if they had actually handled letting The audience discover things well.
