I’m not sure if you guys have watched a lot of the classic romcoms, but so many of the lines in this episode are referenced. From Notting Hill, to jerry McGuire, Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, even the Princess Bride. Really makes the episode when you get the little Easter eggs and references.
Romcom references are a staple, not just in this episode either. Like, the radio shrink in Sleepless in Seattle is named Dr. Fieldstone, just like here. Rebecca’s BANTR screen name (and her mysterious love interest on the app’s, as well) is a direct reference to You’ve Got Mail (hers is a play on Meg Ryan’s character’s screen name, and her mystery man’s is a direct reference to Tom Hanks’s SN). Lots of little things that pop up time and again, and I can’t help but love it all. (I’ve also always appreciated the many references the show makes to the show Cheers, which is kind of a TV romcom in its own right, but I mostly appreciate it because Sudeikis’s real-life uncle is George Wendt, aka Norm, and those two are very close so it feels like such a loving nod every time.)
Yeah, I don't think they're going to fully appreciate how brilliant and nuanced this show is if they're missing so many easter eggs and the potential significance behind them. As it is, they don't react all that much while watching.
ngl, it hurt me a little when they kept missing every. single. one. understandable, but dang y'all.
Roy's big rom-com moment isn't him running to Keeley, but running back to his one true love: football 😢
Fun Fact: The woman in the night time football scene (who Issac shines the shoe of) was Eni Aluko, a former pro footballer (Chelsea, Juventus etc) and played for the England national team too
Maybe somebody on CZcams has done a compilation of all the romcom references in this episode, but there are a ton -- the whole "get Roy back to coach" part of the story is basically a romantic comedy parody. Some of Ted's lines in the restaurant, most of his lines to Roy after the pickup soccer game, were all key lines from famous movies. And then Roy saying as he left the TV studio "I *have* to go" is what the boy always says as he leaves an important meeting to go after the girl, and then he runs through the rain just as Roy runs through the snow (till his knee gives out). The idea of an unrelated vignette from an older couple is from When Harry Met Sally. And his final "happy ending" line, "Stop, you had me at [coach]" is from Jerry Maguire. The episode achieves new levels of hilarity once you key into that.
I saw “I have to go” as from Sleepless in Seattle when Annie leaves Walter to go to ESB. Walter, I have to go.
Nate's story is also very romcom-y.
All the “weird” or odd-feeling lines are references or direct quotes from famous romcoms
So many romcom references this episode don’t know if you caught them all great reaction as usual guys
fun fact: higgins (jeremy swift) and his onscreen wife are actually married in real life!
Came to make the same comment. It makes their scenes even more heartwarming since you know the love is genuine. Also: I’ve always appreciated that when they cut to Higgins going to hug his wife in the ending montage, the lyrics are “Do you see her dressed in blue?” and Mrs. Higgins is head to toe blue.
Yes, it's very clear that although the show is about soccer, the writers are huge film nerds. There are just so many references to all sorts of films throughout this show and rom-coms in particular this episode.
Man, these boys need to catch up on all the classic rom coms!
It was rough watching reference after reference whiff past these guys. Made me feel old
Me too. But it’s more than that. All those references have subtle contextual significance which these guys didn’t get.
Perfect episode. When I need motivation l just watch Roy’s scene of him walking back to the stadium.
My brain is about to explode that you missed most of the iconic lines from classic Rom-coms
The gif file type was preceded by the JIFF file extension which was used on Macintosh computers back in the '90s. It was just a jpeg it did not move. But that is why a lot of people refer to these as jif instead of gif. Just FYI.
It's not your fault because you're too young to have seen the movies this episode references, but man did this episode go straight over your heads.
Higgins and his wife are actually married in real life and have been for some time so every lovely moment between them there is genuine love there which just adds to it
Oooof the music will mean a lot in a couple of episodes 🙂🙂🙂 can’t wait for you guys to find out. Thanks for your great reactions!
They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Ted is number one for maintining the team morale and establishing the overall culture. Beard is his right hand and is the one who can give Ted advice and tell him when he's off track. Roy is the ideal training coach and can spot the technical things that need correcting. Nate is the tactician. Overall, that's a pretty good staff to have.
Y’all did not spend your formative years addicted to rom-coms, and it shows 😂😂
Looks like you guys need to start catching up on the classic 80s & 90s rom coms. 😂
Here's something you might find interesting. The actress that plays Higgins wife is his wife IRL.
Glad Bryce caught the movie reference. There are quite a few throughout season 2!
Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Bryce! Thanks, Zuff! 🥅 #ReelTime #EricaDunton #TedLasso
LOL what is this music? Well it’s a great song by one of the top rock and roll bands of all time! Just maybe you guys have heard of them! The Rolling Stones!!!!!!!!
We will always support your channel. Keep working hard as always.
Lots of references to rom coms here but the best one for me is Jerry McGuire ("you had me at hello"). Worth a watch one day!
LOL the whole Rom-Com theme went over everyones head i guess. the amount of references this show has is crazy. so hard to keep up with everything.
I’m not sure if you guys knew but Higgins wife is his real life wife.
Fun Fact: the actors who play Higgins and his wife are also married in real life.
7:38 (Doener) Kebab is a very popular street food originating from Germany/Turkey, could be considered an equivalent to Taco in the US regarding popularity and foreign food
rom communish - LoL! 😃 ♥ Higgins relationship! Fock yer amazing! Let's invade France! 😃
♥ all the rom com references in this episode/series! Yay Coach Kent! ♥
You did miss the underlying genius of this episode
2 of those pundits are actually loved pundits and do that show for real and its called Soccer Saturday lol.
15:14 There’s only one head coach/manager (Ted) and assistant manager (Beard) in football. They’re in charge.
Football managers have their own coaching staff though, supplemented by the clubs own staff, that focus on different aspects of the team and follow them from club to club. In the show, it seems Nate’s a tactician whereas Roy will focus on mentality, rigor, and spirit. The staff’s talents harmonize and compliment the manager. If Ted were real, he’d probably be labeled a “man’s manager” which means he’s a serious motivator and people person who is well loved, respected, and friendly with his players but may not be the ultimate tactician like a Pep Guardiola (who makes a cameo next season).
In reality, they don’t typically all stand in technical area on the sidelines together during matches lol. That’s for show. Usually it’s just the manager giving direction to his players while his staff watch and take notes from the bench.
I’d recommend watching some compilations of football managers going wild on the sidelines. Some coaches are notoriously animated and occasionally get sent to the stands for misconduct 😂.
Time to catch up on your Rom Com’s 😂
Bryce’s definition of a kebab 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The fact that Rob was singing along to L-O-V-E, a hit for Nat King Cole in 1964, made me do a double take.
All the things you guys didn't understand were rom-coms references.
I’d suggested watching at least You’ve Got Mail again soon, and it’ll show up in some fun Easter eggs in future episodes ❤
Guys.. I never thought I’d say this but I think we need a kebab reaction video 🥙
Yea!!!! 🎉❤
Would love to know whatever drug and/or drug combo Zach is always on. Would love to Stevie Wonder myself through a show an still walk away getting it all.
they play normal. check AFL Proper courage, ask every athlete in your region , see them If YOU ARE REEL
What is a kebob? What planet are you from?
I always heard them called shish kababs. Maybe that threw them off.
I think the guy who didn’t know what a kabob is , is just blazed out of his mind every resctions
I think in the US, a kebab is usually the grilled skewer of meat/veggies. It's a very different thing from a doner kebab. Easy to confuse.
All of the references that were made, that you guys missed…
Dude they were babies when those movies were huge hits
In fact, for some of them, they weren't born yet.
I think there could have been an argument for Jamie to be made captain season 1 if he were still with the team but not now. He’s come a ways and matured but nah
What is a kebab? You havent lived mate 😂
So glad Jamie is gone.
What are you talking about? Jamie isn't gone.
