      This is incorrect. I owned the dvd growing up. If you watch the credits there's a video of them filming their scene in the airport. Also, in the dvd commentary the director discusses the shoot with them. The point was to show the Beckham was no longer the main focus of Jess' life.

  • @LollyJ
    @LollyJ Před 27 dny +9

    Loved this reaction! Just a couple of points for context: 1) a “solicitor” in the UK is a lawyer (trial lawyers are called “barristers” though). A lot of British Indian families place high value on education & academic achievement, and encourage their kids from a young age to pursue careers in law, medicine, dentistry & engineering. So basically Jess’s parents wanted her to become a lawyer. 2) When that girl called Jess a “p*ki”, that is a deeply offensive racial slur, up there with the n-word. Joe could relate to her on some level as during the “troubles” conflict between the Uk (mainly England) and Ireland, Irish people were heavily discriminated against & called slurs as well. 3) the reason they had to go with the same date as the final for the wedding was because Indian weddings are HUUUGE and there are very few venues available that are big enough, so wedding dates are often determined by venue availability. I went to an Indian colleague’s “small” wedding which had 600 guests. It’s common to have over 1000, and festivities last for days. Indian weddings are so much fun, but they really are an endurance sport 😂. 4) more of an observation - since this movie was made, it’s been amazing to see how much the women’s game has grown in the UK. The women’s league is now super popular, they are selling out large stadiums, the players are getting good money (not as good as the boys, but a LOT better) and amazing endorsement deals. The women’s premier league matches are covered in the news & sports pages alongside the men’s. It’s been so great to see the growth!

    I love this movie one of my faves as a teen. It's so funny, when youre not raised in that culture you just dont get it. Those over the top reactions are actually so true to real life, like when Jess and Jules were just laughing and got mistaken for kissing, something that small can call off your siblings marriage, playing football as a girl can get you shunned as a family from the community, at that time and sometimes even today. Its so true to what so many of us went through

    Apparently Gurinder Chadha (the female Indian director who wrote and directed this film) has said later that she really wanted Jules and Jess to be gay, and to have a romance. However, much like Jess in the movie says to Joe 'allowing me to play football is a massive stretch for my family, I can't bring you home as well', she felt like this story was pushing a lot of boundaries with the Indian community at the time, and didn't want people to reject the central premise of the movie (I.e. the football plotline) because they were angered or upset by homosexuality.

    The movie was so relatable. My mom was also soooo against girls playing sports, I nearly quit after three years of being nagged about playing a ''boy's sport''. I ended up actually quitting after 7 years but I'm picking it up again. Even though we never had good changing rooms and they always gave us the worst fields and prioritized the mens teams, playing football was the best thing ever tbh.

    this film is a core memory for me. i was a tomboy and was a massive football fan of man utd. and becks in the 90s. my heart broke when he got married to posh spice 😅 i laughed along when you laughed at jrm (i felt the same then). i feel like he developed as an actor and defo is a bit underrated. he was great in 'the tudors'. he was also in 'match point' with scarlett johansson.

    We loved this movie in my family- my sister and I were brought up playing soccer, and we watched our VHS of this so many times. Getting to see Mia Hamm play live once was a huge deal to us. I'm honestly a little sad they didn't go for Jess/Jules over Joe, but it's still fantastic.
    Parminder Negra (Jess) is best known to American audiences for "ER", and the actress who played her sister Archie Punjabi is well known for "The Good Wife", while Jonathan Rhys Myers (Joe) tends to be known for "The Tudors" (as Henry VIII), but he's also memorable for being in "August Rush" with Keri Russell and a young Freddie Highmore- also Robin Williams.
    Since you mentioned wanting a sequel, I'll share my crack wish that's-never-going-to-happen-but-I'll-repeat-it-in-the-hopes-of-manifesting-it: "Ted Lasso" doing a spin-off about Richmond's women's team and Parminder reprising Jess, as their coach.
    Since you mentioned seeing Keira in "P&P" (2005) at the start, I'll also echo someone in your comments who recommended "Bride & Prejudice" (2004)- both it and "BilB" were written and directed by Gurinder Chadha, and it's a Bollywood-inspired take (so there are multiple songs) on "P&P". It's not perfect, but it's really enjoyable. (I think the other recommender also mentioned Daniel Gillies, aka Elijah from "TVD", is in it)

    This is a movie that is literally never shown on tv and I don't get why - it was huge back then when was released in cinemas literally made an unknown Keira Knightly into a star overnight and it certainly should have of young woman who played Jess the other lead but criminally Hollywood didn't utilise her skills and she only in the end got minimal exposure in comparison in America. But yeah this was and still is a classic, just big shame you never see it on tv.
