I love the fact that Tula has her glow-up and bettering her life BEFORE she official meets the guy and falls inlove. she worked on being happy with herself and a job she felt more comfortable in and even took college classes to better herself. then once she had her groove going and practically glowing, the guy sees that and thats when they fall inlove. that's definitely a positive message for women out there. you can't just wait for a relationship to be happy. work on bettering your life and being happy with yourself first and usually the rest will fall into place.
My late father was Lebanese and I swear this father in the movie was just like mine. Except his cure-all was Vicks Vapor Rub instead of Windex 😂
I use isopropyl alcohol that way 😅
@@LordVolkovI mean... It *does* disinfect, so you're not totally off the mark 😅.
I’m half Dominican and it’s our cure all as well!
@@Carpathianpixie I think Windex has some disinfectant too 🤔 The old ways remain strong...
In our house it was Robitussin
$368.7 million on a $5 million budget. Solid cast, and it looks great! I gotta give respect.
I haven't seen them, but there are multiple sequels. Really cool that it started on such a tiny budget and did gangbusters.
@@LordVolkov The first sequel (the only one I've watched) is absolutely worth watching, but keep your expectations low. It's a solid movie, but the shoes of the first movie are impossible to fill. It's such a singular creation.
@@deanreevesii 👍I'll bump it up my list. I really enjoyed Nia in My Life In Ruins, so I'm sure I'll enjoy the sequel also if it's even half as good as the first.
What the whaaaa?? $5M is a crazy-low budget for such a fantastic (and well-made) film!
@@cometgirl217 Rita Wilson, Tom Hank's wife, was the person who really pushed for this to be made and both she and Tom did some of the original funding. Wilson is also Greek and saw something in this that would resonate with people.
“WHATCHU MEAN YOU DONT EAT NO MEAT? ITS OK I COOK LAMB” LMAO 😂😂🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
One of my favorite moments in this whole movie is while Ian is getting baptized and Toula tells Nick whatever it is about her not being worth that. The way her brother looks at her and tells her she is worth it melts me every time.
Awww I agree 😍🥲
I love that Ian and Tula have zero drama. They're just a solid, kind, loving couple.
I wish they made more romantic comedies like this for that very reason. Let the chaos be on the outside with the couple watching it all together.
This is what a healthy relationship looks like.
I think it's because they are both mature adults and not 20 year old drama queens. Not that there aren't mature 20 year olds but they are not usually portrayed that way on film.
Ian is kind of a vanilla character. He doesn't have much personality but that doesn't matter, because the "minor" characters have so much.
I'm Greek American. I'm 60. My grandparents came over here from an island that was still owned by the Turks in 1900. When my grandmother was mad at me, she would call me a Turk.
💀
hahahahahahahaha thats awesome
Many cultures call you a turk if they don’t like you 💯
😂
😆😆😆
Favorite line, " the man is the head of the family and the woman is the neck and the body neck can move the head anywhere it wants"
I was taught this from an early age as well but I come from Russian and Ukrainian heritage
No lies detected. lol
I told my mom that & it is the truth. May my dad rest in Peace. And I told the female customers that too. That comment made me feel corrected! Stand by ur man & show him the way!❤
Tula in real life wrote this story of her family. Then she wound up playing herself in this film. Underrated movie. Still laughing all these years later.
Plus the actor who plays the best friend of the male lead was her actual husband!
@@1sTEfFaniE1Scrolling through the comments to see who knows the fun facts.
"I don't remember frump girl, but I remember you." 🥺😍🥰
Right? ♥
Fave line in the movie. ❣😍
Stole my heart with that line. ❤
Swoon worthy.
I love that the main charactor's makeover was a life makeover and not a whole beauty and wardrobe change. She made small changes to her appearence but big changes to her life and got what she wanted.
"Ian" is played by John Corbett, who was previously in the TV show Northern Exposure. The stepbrother in Clueless was played by Paul Rudd, who also played AntMan in the Marvel.movies. Two very different people.
John Corbett also played Carrie Bradshaw's boyfriend in Sex and the City.
And the boyfriend of Sarah Jessica Parkers character in Sex in the City TV show also.
And now ghostbusters
John Corbett also played Lara Jean's dad in the To All The Boys trilogy
cant forget Joey Fatone from N'Sync
In 2003 I worked in the entertainment dept onboard a cruise ship owned and operated by Greeks. This movie played in the cinema for my entire 12 month contract lol
😂😂😂😂 dead 😂😂😂😂
That's funny lol :P
If no one's mentioned it yet: Ian's bald pessimist friend was actually Nia Vardalos' real life husband. That actor's real first name: IAN! Coincidence???
I always remember him from The Drew Carey Show
No it wasn’t coincidence, lol. Nia wrote this story bc she was writing about the two of them and their love story. 😂 And he was* her husband. I believe they’re divorced now. 😢
@@melindamercier6811Yes. They are divorced.
And now divorced
Yeah, she was writing about THEIR story as he isn't Greek.
I was fed so well at my Greek friend’s houses. I was skinny and always had food shoved in my face with the classic line “Eat something, you’re too skinny”. I was in heaven. I still find Greek festivals in the area and attend them whenever I can. Sooo yummy.
The line "It's lucky for me I have you to tie my shoes." Still makes me laugh after all these years.
That was dad. You know, women don't have enough brains to come out of the rain. BS like that.
"Hey Ian! We're gonna kill ya!" 😁
Joey Fatone is actually pretty funny in this, which I wasn't expecting.
It really is a cute movie, and who doesn't love Aunt Voula? She's hilarious and steals the movie every time she shows up. "He don't eat no meat?!"
Aunt Voula was excellent!
I love Aunt Voula
I was very surprised by how funny Fatone was when this movie first came out 😂
The actress playing Aunt V is actually a stand up comedian!
@@SC-gp7kt I discovered that after seeing her here, as well as many of her other movies (including the original Black Christmas and the 2009 remake 🤯). What a delightful woman.
I’m only a little jealous of you getting to see this for the first time. This is one of my favorite comedies ever. It’s such fun. Thank you for sharing.
Balkan culture in general is like this, its just a great life. Greetings from Kosova 🇽🇰
Girl Ian is not the stepbrother in Clueless. That's Paul Rudd!
I think Ian was in Sex and the City?
He's the DJ on _Northern Exposure_ and Aidan on _Sex and the City._
I'm not usually attracted to John Corbett, the actor who plays Ian, but he is SO DREAMY in this movie
Ian- May I please date your daughter?
Gus- No!!
My favorite scene 😂
@8:07 That’s Nia Vardalos’ real-life husband at the time, Ian Gomez. Nia wrote the screenplay for this movie based on her own experience marrying a non-Greek man.
It wasn’t until I watched this movie for the first time in the last year that i thought anything about how my half-Greek cousin is named Nick lmao. Now every time I watch the introduction scene during the family party, I can’t help but think of it. 🤣
I love your name! 😅❤
Loved your reaction, as always.💖 The spitting is a traditional thing, but it's portrayed in an exaggerated manner. No one actually expels saliva, we just say the word 'ftou' which represents the sound of spitting. It's supposedly an act to ward off any lingering bad energy, and is used mostly by older generations.
Italians do that too
The year this came out, my cousin had a Quinceañera, and as she passed in the church, my dad took a page from this film and leaned over and lightly spat on the back of her dress! I nearly passed out trying not to laugh out loud. 🤣
My grandparents eloped from a small Greek Island because they did not want to marry who was planned for them. 💕 My grandmother told me when I was 4 years old never to forget that "Turks are the meanest people." 😳🤔🤣 so glad you guys got to see this.
There have been two greek genocides in recent history (let alone being enslaved during ottoman empire), it's normal for this feeling to exist against Turkey. Maybe not people as a whole, but for the country.
BJ guessed right, lifting the bride and groom in chairs and smashing a glass wrapped in a napkin are both parts of Jewish weddings! We also just do the chair lift for any big celebration! I was in fear for my life at my Bat Mitzvah when all my 13 year old girlfriends lifted me up 😂
But smashing plates is a greek tradition.
@@NinjaBee81 cool! We do a glass
@@mheiligm0113 My father's side of the family are Greeks; my mother's side of the family are Jewish (so I am too). Together, to say my families go through a LOT of tableware is putting it mildly.

I've always thought this was just the cutest movie. The end when her parents give their gift always gets me.
I was vegan when I moved to Dallas, TX. People would invite me to dinner and I would let them know about my diet, they would legit say, “Not a problem - I’ll make chicken!”
Central Texas here, sorry about that! 😅❤
Don't chicken eggs grow on trees?
The actress that played Tula wrote the movie. It’s based on her real life family. The second one is cute too.
Rita Wilson saw Tula's one woman show and love it so much, she met her backstage and got with hubby Tom Hanks to make this movie with their production company. (Playtone)
This is one of my favorite movies. I watch it at least once a year.
Same. I think anyone who grew up with a big, close, nosey family can relate to this, lol!
Tom Hanks wife saw the star of this in a standup comedy show and thought she was so funny she brought her husband. He loved it and a movie was born. 🇨🇦🖖🏻
And Rita wanted you to play Tula. Nia said she wanted to play herself and a star was born.
This movie became a favorite of my mother's because of how accurate it was when she married by step-dad. Only difference was both families were MASSIVE. So much fun, but so much chaos. 😂
So many of us with strong ties to our culture (no latter what it is) related so strongly to this movie lol. I can tell you as a Hispanic, my family thoroughly enjoyed the parallels. So hilarious. The sequels are mediocre, but this movie is **chef’s kiss**.
Asia you do NOT look old enough to remember America's Funniest Home Videos. 😂
She really doesn't lol but that was one of the shows I grew up watching :P
I was born in the very early 2000s and I remember that show...
My husband comes from a gigantic family and while he's not Greek, I definitely felt like Ian when I met his family. Just on his mom's side, he has over 100 first cousins and he can rattle off their names without blinking.
When we were planning our wedding, we had to curb his urge to invite every single relative. My mother said, "any aunt/uncle who is single can bring 1 cousin as their Plus 1."
And his relatives have tried to feed me weird foods full of mayonnaise. I have convinced them that I'm allergic to eggs, just to avoid that nightmare.
Not the mayonnaise force feed! 😂😂
I'm allergic to nuts and just about every dessert they make has them. It's hard being an Indian with a Greek fiancee family
@@andreadeamon6419 that's a gastronomical minefield! You have my sympathy!
@@andreadeamon6419 Dang! So you can't even have baklava?! (That's Greek right? Or is that from some other mediterranean country?)
A fun movie that, at the time when it came out it was an under the radar success. The aunt is the best.
One of my favorite happy, comfort movies.
Asias face during the dating montage 🤣 I’m dying 🤣🤣🤣
This movie always has me laughing because it's so relatable! For me it's watching a parody of my family! Yes, a big chunk of my family is Greek, living in Greece and my summers were often filled with loud big parties with a whole lamb roasting over a firepit. Or my uncle grilling fresh fish he had caught in the morning and then chasing me and my siblings with the eyeballs to get us to eat them! Aaaaahhh, the memories🤣
I’m first Gen Italian. This movie is very close to how my family is. But I wouldn’t trade them. My father passed away last year. This movie always makes me think of him.
Lol yes ur talking about a jewish wedding. We dance the hora when the married couple get raised in a chair. It also happens to the bar/batmitzvah boys and girls. And then yea at the wedding ceremony the step on a glass! But i do know cultures have overlapping customs so we may not be the only ones who do all this!
One of the biggest financial hits in Hollywood history. And yes, a really good movie.
I'm so glad you guys love this film. I saw this in a small theater and it was the greatest movie experience of my life. I have never heard so many Roars and waves of laughter. I still can't use Windex without laughing😂😂😂
Eon is not from Clueless He played Aidan in Sex in the City.
I remember when this movie first came out was a hit. To this day, I still joke around a family gatherings when someone gets a scrape or bump and tell them, "Put some Windex on it".
My roommate and I will say, " Why you want to leeaaavve me?", any time the other leaves for work.
I'm half Greek (father's side) and I can say this is 100% factual. Luckily, I love being considered Greek (the family will take any excuse to make sure "you" are Greek too.)
When I was 10, I was playing with my best friend (Gus. also 10). His mother, who was a distant relative-and Greek, of course, asked my parents if they were willing to agree for Gus and I to be engaged NOW, and we would get married when we turned 18!
My dad seriously considered
it, but my mom put her foot down. The thing about the women becoming a baby machine was very true, and she knew I wouldnt be
happy in that role.
40+ years later, I'm single and happy. Gus is married to another Greek woman and has like 3 daughter and 1 son, and he is very
happy as well
My nephew was baptized is a Greek Orthodox Church (my SIL is Romanian and the Greek Orthodox church was the closest thing to Romanian Orthodox church in our U.S. town). At one point, the priest and the godmother went towards the back of the church, read some Bible verses & spit on the floor. She explained the spitting is spitting on the devil, I guess to keep the bad luck or evil away.
A lot of cultures share similar customs: like the 'evil eye,'
That's what it is. And we don't actually spit, it's more like pretending to spit while letting air out lol.
And rubbing the baby--or in this case Ian--with oil, is to keep the Devil from getting a hold of him.
@@OlympicLeprechaun I assume it originates from being anointed with oil.
@@agresticumbra it does.
Nia Vardalos the actress playing Tula is the writer of this movie
This is a very sweet romantic comedy ... even as a non-Greek single guy, I loved and appreciated it the first time I saw it.
This was a “sleeper” hit. First in a limited release. Then it was absolutely exploded in the theaters and was everywhere and spawned sequels.
This movie is just totally good feels
‘That’s OK…. I make lamb.” I friggin love Andrea Martin as Aunt Voula. You guys should definitely check her out in the little seen Robin Williams movie Club Paradise. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a reaction to it and Andrea Martin kills it in that one too!
You two are just charming. You’re great reactors, but the wonderful curiosity you bring to your reactions is a breath of fresh air. Keep up the adventures! Opa! ❤❤❤
I love her in Great News.
I love the whole part of the story after his baptism. It's all so great from her aunt and uncle not letting go of him to her brother and cousin messing with his head. favorite line-"that's okay, that's okay. I make lamb." I love her family.
Yup, that's a whole lamb. When you have a big family, roasted lamb is a way to go. Roasted pig is also great!
The way I still have the same reaction to this movie like I'm watching it for the first time. Watching y'all make the same faces was hilarious 😂. Great reaction guys!
Nia Vardalos, who played the lead, also wrote the movie, which is loosely based on her marrying her non-Greek husband.
Michael Constantine (the dad) has been in a lot of things. He used to be on a lot of sitcoms and briefly had one where he was a judge.
Shoutout to BJ for the Shenaynay quote. 🤣
This is such a cute movie! And a perfect ensemble cast. Fun fact - Nia Vardalos (who played Toula) also wrote the screenplay. Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman were producers on this film. For some other cute films in the Hanks / Goetzman / Playtone universe check out Larry Crowne (also written by Nia Vardalos, directed by Hanks, produced by Goetzman) and That Thing You Do (written and directed by Hanks and produced by Goetzman). Plus the looks on your faces when Nikki shows them the blue bridesmaid dress - LOL!
Another small budget movie (that is definitely worth watching) is a movie shot entirely in black and white from the 80's is called "The Elephant Man", with a very young Anthony Hopkins. One of my favorite small budget movies. Heads-up, be ready to cry a lot. I watched a galley full of sailors on the submarine I was stationed on tear up when we watched it.
Wow, I don’t think I’ve EVER seen anyone recommend that movie. But that is a fantastic recommendation! Classic movie!!!
Great reaction to a funny and heartfelt story & movie. FYI, the very old Greek tradition that requires wedding guests to “spit” on the Bride and Groom, of course is pretend and they are not literally spitting. But by pretending that they are spitting on the happy couple, by doing this the guest is protecting them from evil spirits!
This was such a a sweet movie. The fact that Nia Vardolos wrote it, and based it on her family made it even better. Now you need to watch the 2nd and 3rd one.
They really don’t. They’re not that good lol. 😂
Second one wasn't bad, I forgot to see the third on in the theater
@@jennifer_m.8613wasn't it straight to video?
Oh hell yes!! this movie is so hilarious, my best friend and I would quote it often 😂
“He don’t eat no meat?!” 😂
Classic movie! I still need to have my husband watch. The whole family coming for dinner to meet Ian and his parents is something my family would do 😂
One of my favorite movies.
The jewish wedding you are describing may be from Fiddler On The Roof, a very good musical I definitely recommend 😊
As an Italian from NJ I related to this movie so well! The only difference is the colors on the flag and the accent of the grandparents😂😂😂. You have to watch the second one too!
This movie is one of my favorite comfort movies. When I’m sick or feeling down, this movie, along with Dan In Real Life, South Park the Movie, Moneyball, and She’s Out Of My League are on the list.
I watch other movies over and over again, but when in a funk, sad, or sick, one of these movies brings me up for some reason.
I love “Dan in Real Life”!
This movie is 100% accurate. My Dad looked and talked just like the Dad in this movie, lol.
It was accurate for first generation Greek immigrants, because that's how things were in Greece when they left (50's-60's). Nothing to do with today's Greece though.
@@alx_gr1WDYM? I was born in America, and so was my mom but both her older siblings were born in Greece so I'm not sure if that makes me 1st or 2nd gen, but I'm only 18 and watched the movie when I was like 14, I always thought it was extremely accurate, even to this day
@@sprinkles06 I mean what I said. It's the culture first generation Greeks brought with them and the next generations also kept to connect with homeland. It has nothing to do with Greece today.
@@alx_gr1 okay? So what is Greece today?
The lamb scene will always be iconic
“It’s not gonna change unless you want it to change” is Sage advice
Greek weddings sometimes include the custom of breaking plates or glasses, which is known as plate smashing. The tradition may have originated from an ancient practice of ritually "killing" plates to celebrate happy occasions. It may also symbolize new beginnings, as the couple is leaving behind their old life and starting a new one.
The tradition of lifting the bride and groom on chairs during the horah, a celebratory dance, is a Jewish wedding tradition. The chairs are placed in the middle of a circle, and guests lift the couple above their heads. The tradition is part of entertaining the bride on her wedding day.
The actress who played Tula costarred with Toni Collette (the mom in "Sixth Sense") in 2004's "Connie and Carla".
For Pride Month, you should react to it.
It's a wonderful fun film, as good as this film was.
When cultures collide! 😂 I love this film. ❤
I am Greek through and through. My father was born in Greece. My mother was born in the US when this movie came out, and I saw it the connection that was made based upon my heritage and how we are within the heritage was unbelievable. The Greek family dynamic, even though we might be from different parts of the country is spot on! Lots of laughs lots of smiles lots of get to your heart.❤. All beautiful all real such wonderful memories.❤️❤️❤️‼️
I love my Greek family-in-law. I am in contact with them even more than with my own family. I feel right at home in Pireaus, but also high in the mountains in yjayia's village. "Fakes, agori mou?". 87yr old, tiny, cuts a huge pumpkin with a butcherknife and a hammer. While smiling and telling stories. We married on Salamina Island, Tsipourou and Zeibekiko all night. I became Nonos of a beautiful girl.
I actually learned Greek for my family-in-law, trough TV shows and many questions. If you're in, you're really "In". Friends included.
Asia, you confused the actor who plays Ian in this, John Corbett, with the actor who plays the stepbrother in Clueless, Paul Rudd. This is based on the true story of Nia Vardalos who plays Tula, and her real-life husband, who appears in this movie as Ian's friend. This is a great feel-good movie, glad you enjoyed it!
this is one of the best movies. Alot of it was filmed in Toronto, in the Greek community. The house is around the corner from me and when they were filming everyone was gathered to see what they were filming. the house has been renovated and its no longer white and looks completely different,
