The Feuds & Tensions Behind Queen Elizabeth's Coronation | Behind Closed Doors | Real Royalty

  • The Coronation in 1953 appeared to be a glittering triumph for the House of Windsor. But behind the scenes there was a three-cornered story of jealousy and rivalry at the highest level. The new Queen was caught in the middle.
    While the new Queen largely sided with her mother over arrangements for the Coronation, she backed Philip over perhaps the most important decision to televise the ceremony inside Westminster Abbey. In doing so she set a precedent for television to be given access to the most intimate rituals.
    Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

      Am I wrong in telling that Prince Philip was
      by maternal side :
      Mountbatten , previously Battemberg, a German family , branch of family of Hesse and the Rhine , due to the morganatic marriage between Alexander of Hesse and the Rhine (third son of Louis II Granduke of Hesse/Rhine ) and Julia Hauke.
      They had three sons:
      Louis Prince of Battemberg who married Victoria of Hesse daughter of Granduke Louis IV of Hesse and Alice Princess of Great Britain daughter of Queen Victoria.
      They were cousins and parents of Alix , mother of Prince Philip, Louisa, second wife of King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden, and Lord Louis Mountbatten (so called Uncle Dickie) and another one son.
      Victoria of Hesse was also, among other, sister of Alexandra Feodorovna , latest Empress of Russia wife of Nicolas II , and Elizabeth who married Granduke Sergei of Russia and was killed during the Russian revolution with other 18 relatives by throwing alive in a cool mine;
      Alexander who was named Prince of Bulgaria , temporarily , during Balkans war;
      Henry , Prince of Battemberg , who married Beatrix , last daughter of Queen Victoria and they were parents of Victoria Eugenia Queen of Spain , wife of Alfonso XIII, and great grandmother of the King Felipe VI of Spain.
      By paternal side
      he was son of Prince Andrew of Greece, son of King George I of the Ellenes , whom was offered the reign of Greece in 1845, at the age of 18, son of King Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse Kassel.
      George I was also brother to Alexandra Queen consort of England , wife of King Edward VII son of Queen Victoria , and to Dagmar, better known as Empress Maria Feodorovna wife of Alexander III of Russia and mother of Nicolas II last Emperor of Russia.
      So Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II were cousins by maternal side through princess Alix of Great Britain (and obvoously Queen Victoria) and by paternal side through Christian IX of Denmark.
      By these connections they are related to the other Kings and Queen in Europe.

      The one thing that allways has disturbed me about the marriage of Her Majesty and Prince Philip was this idiotic tradition that Prince Philip had to be allways 2 steps BEHIND the queen: who started this silliness in the first place ? I grew up in a country with a monarch (Holland) but there was no such thing as a prince walking 2 steps behind the queen, neither have I seen this silly tradition elswhere among European royalty. Prince Philip definitely deserved to walk next to the queen: he did so much for Brittain but always quiet and modest. He would have made an excellent King !!

      Actually, Philip didn't sort out Buckingham Palace. In the 1950's he took a crack at it but every time he had an idea, Her Majesty felt the need to run it past her mother and the so-called "Queen Mum" in her self-appointed role as the defender of the 19th century vetoed it. That is one reason Philip began to travel. Source: Prince Philip: A Critical Biography by John Parker 1990.

    It sounds like the Queen Consort wasn’t as sad about her husband passing as she was passing on the spotlight to her daughter. She seemed to always try to upstage her daughter in the videos and photos of that time and was dressed like a pageant contestant even in her old age. If I had been Philip, I would’ve been down right furious over her appalling treatment and would’ve said to QE2, their can’t be 3 of us in this marriage and you can only have one of us sit next to the throne, choose. I’d understand if she was saddened by her husband’s passing and even feel sympathy for her but she seems to only care that her daughter(s) have taken center stage and she’s not ok with passing any attention to her (them). She wasn’t even the queen, just a consort, who didn’t add much to the monarchy. Sure she gave birth to QE2, but nannys raised her and besides an enormous bill for her clothes, gin and gambling, she gave more problems than anything else. Poor Philip had to give up everything (including being a prince in his own right), to play a supporting role to his wife and had to fight just to get his children to bare his last name. In those days, it was unheard of to have a woman, openly running the family and the family business. He basically had his balls cut off and if that wasn’t enough, he had to fight his mother in law from hell on everything, even the battles that were common sense (Making a servant carry notes to the other family members on a silver platter instead of a walkie talkie??? Come the hell on!) I’m surprised he didn’t strangle the old bat! Her over inflated sense of grandeur is was almost as bad as the present day MeGain.... everyone says she’s was so sweet?!? Pah-lease! She was sweet if she got her gin-induced way and her insanely expensive tastes satisfied by the taxpayers. She even said herself “I’m not as nice as people think I am;” obviously she wasn’t even close! What she did to Diana, treating her like dog poo on her $1,000 shoes and covering for Charles and his skank by giving them refuge to bang as often as they wanted but continued to talk shit about Edward VIII and Wallis? At least he was single and didn’t have children unlike Charles and Diana.

    Phillip was Queen Elizabeth's cousin! So when they said they didn't know who Phillip was, they actually knew exactly who is was and his whole family.

      @Dana But it wasn't a very impressive story. Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice was severely deaf and very spiritual. This combination did not sit well with a desire to present a robust(physically) view of Monarchy. Also Prince Philip's father was a womaniser. What we plebs would call a 'cad'. Non of this fitted the Victorian ideal of family life. As a visibly physically impaired person I am alert to such attitudes wherever I find them. Impaired people (now often called the Disabled") are something of an embarrassment to a healthy in mind body and soul image of an acceptable Royal personage. Sensitive and kind though prone to what I call "Celtic Flare" King Charles knew all about both His maternal and His paternal grandparents. The ignorance of such things bemuses Him
      I think. I so enjoy this on-line discussion and thank everyone !

    In a matriarchal family, stepping down from the heights is like stepping backward. We have yet to learn, in female dominated families, that the backseat holds just as much spotlight as the drivers seat ever did.

      That is wrong and building on the idea that men wouldn’t allow others to help and voice their opinions. If a man does so it only shows weakness, strong characters always listen to others with experience and knowledge.

    With modern technology wouldn't it be possible to sharpen the images of the Coronation and restore the original colours ? Perhaps something similar could also be created for the Coronation and Funeral etc of Queen Victoria?..Or do these alterations already exist somewhere and I just haven't located them?
