If the producers of THE CROWN want to consider a prequel to the series, then centering it around Mary of Teck would be the way to go. Just think of the life she lived. She was born into a minor German royal family, became engaged to England's Prince of Wales, lost him due to illness, then became engaged to his younger brother, George, the Duke of York, became Queen after bearing six children, two of whom would become Kings of England, lived through a World War against the country of her birth, saw the family name changed to appear to be more 'British', watched her oldest son give up the crown, lived through a second World War, and then outlived her second son to see her granddaughter become Queen Elizabeth II. I'm surprised that her life story hasn't been given the full biographical treatment.

Agreed! Side note: the actress playing her in the series was spot-on--brilliant physical and persona casting. There should also be a series about Philips's mother, Princess Alice. She was a woman before her time.

The content of the documentary is extremely well put together and interesting. The choppiness of the video itself with pictures being flipped back-and-forth continuously the actual speaking parts not matching up to the documentary itself are Incredibly annoying, also it takes away from the overall documentary. I don’t know who you are using at this point but they may want to practice a bit more before they continue making documentaries like this. Again the con tent is amazingly informational. The presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Queen Mary was a complete badass. I’m fascinated with her and her era. No other Royal wore jewelry quite like Mary, it was a site to behold. Just wonderful. It’s too bad her son was such a punk. I’d known little about Mary of Teck except that she seemed to rarely smile, was portrayed as cold ( certainly to her children), and lasted a long time. This documentary gave me a better appreciation and respect for her and her dedication to the British monarchy and her sense of duty. However, I think her error was to not balance her duty to her country with her duty to her children, future monarchs. That is, in a real way, to be a mother, and not just a queen. She seemed unable to offer the most basic maternal warmth and love towards her children, and this has, unfortunately, passed down the generations, because her granddaughter also had difficulty connecting to her oldest son, the current king. It was only Diana who broke that mold of turning the royal children over to professional governesses, and Insisted on being involved with her sons emotionally (unlike her husband), and in their day-to-day lives, and that is essential in the development of the future royals. Mary of Teck may have abrogated herself for the monarchy and her sense of duty, but she also abrogated her children. Perhaps her oldest son would not have done what he had done had his parents been more involved in a nurturing way, because it appears that both of them were quite severe And even degrading. One would not find a warm shoulder of hers to cry on. However, she did show emotional availability to her people in a broad sense, and was a faithful and good wife to her King.

Not sure I agree with a lot of this. She was a very good consort ,no doubt at all . But she was matriarch of 6 ,very troubled kids and a very materialistic woman . The fact that her eldest son "bit off his own nose to spite his face" can be attributed to a very cold relationship with both parents. Her second son had more responsibility in him ,but again ,like his elder brother was never nourished at home . Even in the times she lived in ,where Royalty was revered ,she was greatly respected ,but never loved. Dont get me wrong , Im not saying she was a bad person ,but to say she "saved the monarchy ,stretches it a bit thin

I agree. Not doubt she had great qualities, but she pretty much failed as a mother (she was cold and distant), and had a reputation in her own time of being a kleptomaniac. Wonder where she got all that jewelry? Some of it she bullied people into giving to her (note: especially the displaced members of the Russian royal family who came to the UK). Same with the cool little collections of things she had - people used to hide their good stuff when they heard she was visiting.

As for Mary. She was terribly shy & poor. She was also bullied buy people because her mother was morbidly obese.
Her husband was a tyrant, short tempered & less than pleasant to be around. Mary walked a fine line between comforting her children & placating her husband. Only when he was off doing something could she be a mother. IMHO he was the cold bully & Mary didn’t come into her own until after he passed.

      The kleptomania occurred
      during her old age. When
      people age, their mental
      faculties decline in various
      ways. Most people can
      step back but a monarch
a consort or a public figure
is not able to step back
totally out of the public eye.
If she failed to be a cuddly,
      nurturing mother it was
      because she was not
      nurtured, by her own parents.
      In fairness to Queen Mary,
      George V, himself appeared
to be a handful to manage.
      (Let alone the children)
      However, if both George V
      and Queen Mary had been
      nurtured; they might have
picked up on the abuse by
      the nursery staff. The

Queen Mary's mother was a granddaughter of Britain's legendary King George III whom the American colonies and George Washington fought for against George III and the British monarchy in the American Revolutionary War in the 1770's. Queen Mary's granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II just passed away last year in 2022. So in just six generations of one family going past over 250 years spans the huge impact of just a single family had over the huge, very important and sometimes colossal events of British and world history which could be encapsulated by the members of this one family. Queen Mary's mother was also a first cousin of Britain's Queen Victoria.

That’s all fine and dandy but I have a hard time admiring a mother who, to quote a documentary I watched earlier, wore a psychological armor that prevented any emotion shown to her children. Son David and his brother who later became King, both said they had a miserable, terrifying childhood, thanks to an abusive father and a non-intervening, cold, emotionless mother. I don’t care who or what you are or what the “times” were; why is it so wrong, IF you love your children, not to show it, at least to the extent that they don’t grow up with such psychological trauma. For all her faults, that’s one thing Diana wasn’t afraid to change, no matter what royal tradition was.

@@A2D4 I agree with you wholeheartedly, and that deficit, unfortunately was inherited by her granddaughter, and visited upon her children, especially her oldest son. If the royal family has one defect, it is the ability to be emotionally responsive to each other and to their people. For QE2, this came out after Diana died so tragically, and she was unable to address her people for days. But more importantly, she apparently offered nearly nothing emotionally to her older son, who is now the king. I can only conclude that her own mother was not much of a mother.

Also she may have had a role in the denial of asylum of Nicholas and Alexandra, which directly lead to their deaths. Often wondered how she and George could live with themselves.....

I feel like Wallis Simpson gets a bad wrap. So much of the allegations against her are rumors that have no proof, what does have proof is that Edward and her lived happily together for the rest of Edwards life faithfully. I don't think either were fit for the Monarchy but it's taken to character assassination level. There's also a level of misogyny in that she's blamed for almost everything. Again not saying they shouldn't be criticized but I think people need to really think about where and why that criticism is coming from and if it's something that's valid.

E.g. she was portrayed as a gold digger and power hungry social climber when she in fact didn’t want to marry Edward but was forced into it by Edward threatening with suicide. Edward VII & Alexandra, put the Firm on the track it is today. Opening hospitals and in touch with the people, on display basically. The masterful art of Mary was to use new tech to the Family's interest, making sure they were shown in the best light to a vast audience.
