  • The Coronation in 1953 appeared to be a glittering triumph for the House of Windsor. But behind the scenes there was a three-cornered story of jealousy and rivalry at the highest level.
On one side Prince Philip was at odds with the Queen Mother over his desire to modernise the monarchy. On the other the old Queen was jealous of her daughter's sudden rise to power. The Coronation was a critical year for the young Queen Elizabeth. She was preparing to undergo the most ancient and important royal ritual, but the two people closest to her, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip had very different ideas about how it should be handled. Philip, the dashing but dangerously modern consort, was anxious that the Coronation should not be simply a stuffy replay of previous reigns. He wanted 'some features relevant to the world today'. But he was fiercely resisted by the Queen Mother and by Princess Mary, who referred to Philip as 'the Hun'.
The new Queen was caught in the middle. In Coronation Coup, we learn that Mountbatten, who had engineered the marriage between Philip and Elizabeth wanted the family name changed to Windsor-Mountbatten after her accession. Also, while the new Queen largely sided with her mother over arrangements for the Coronation, she backed Philip over perhaps the most important decision to televise the ceremony inside Westminster Abbey. In doing so she set a precedent for television to be given access to the most intimate rituals.

Prince Phillip was related to most of the royal houses of Europe. Queen Victoria was his ggggrandmother. Queen Louise of Sweden was his aunt. Empress Alexandra of Russia was his great aunt. Tsar Nicholas was his second cousin. Empress Alexandrovna of Russia was his great aunt. Queen Alexandra of England was his great aunt. King George V of England was his second cousin. King George I of Greece was his grandfather. Princess Marie Bonaparte was his aunt by marriage. Marquis of Milford-Haven was his uncle George. Lord Louis Mountbatten was his uncle. Princess Alice was his mother. And Prince Andrew of Greece his father. Most here were related by family blood. It's a wonder his blood didn't run absolute blue rather than red.

He didn't have to marry the Queen, and he didn't have to lose his career, he did it all voluntarily! Prince Philip was an INTEGRAL PART OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY. He was an active working member of the Royal family and he wasn't pushed or shoved about by anyone, he wasn't the type to stand for that. Give him a bit more credit, he was an intelligent, well educated, eloquent Royal who was part of OUR Royal family. His own family were the Greek Royal family who fled Greece after his father's brother, the King of Greece, was overthrown. When he came to England as a child he was sent to Gordonston school in Scotland and grew up more or less penniless. Philip was part of our Royal family for as long as I can remember, I'm 68, and was much loved and respected. He lived a life he wouldn't have been able to had he not married the Queen. He wore the trousers at home.

His mother wasnt precisely 'royal', but certainly noble. It was some generations since any of her agnatic ancestors ruled in their own right (Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse), and even then would be styled 'Grand Ducal Highness', not 'Royal Highness' or 'Imperial Highness', and as such is not royal.
Royal blood, yes, but not in any legal sense inherited.
As to his father, he never ruled any country as king, but Philip's grandfather did, but as to whether that could be inherited depends on whos laws and traditions are used. The use of titular 'prince' was continued to Philip, so that seems likely, even when no longer claiming the Kingdoms of Denmark nor Greece.

The coronation is "just" the public recognition of the 'de jure' status of the new monarch, as well as that monarch's public oath to uphold the "laws and customs", etc.

The myth that Prince Philip somehow wasn't "first class royalty" is bizarre. Unlike Queen Elizabeth, her husband's ancestry is solid bedrock European royalty. Prince Philip is a direct descendant of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert, Catherine the Great & the Tsars of Russia, the German Kaisers, the Kings of Denmark and Greece and is related to virtually every royal house in Europe including Sweden, Norway, Holland, Romania and Spain. Prince Philip's uncle was Lord Mountbatten a great grandson of Queen Victoria, his Grandmother Victoria of Hesse's sister was the last Empress of Russia, his father Prince Andrew of Greece's first cousins were King George V of England and Nicholas 11 of Russia and his first cousin Princess Marina of Greece was married to the Queen's uncle the Duke of Kent. Forensic scientists even used Prince Philip's DNA to identify the skeletal remains of Russia's last Royal Children. Prince Philip is several times directly related to Queen Elizabeth sharing the same great great grandmother Queen Victoria and great great Grandfather King Christian 1X of Denmark. Queen Elizabeth's great great Grandmother Queen Alexandra of Britain and Prince Philip's grandfather King George I of Greece were brother and sister. Prince Philip was chiefly raised in France, Scotland and in England mostly under the sponsored guardianship of his British uncles the Marquess of Milford Haven and Lord Mountbatten. Prince Philip served in the British Navy throughout World War Two and was no "foreigner" to England.

A most unusual genetic heritage . Prince Phillip was hardly Greek though . Born on a Greek island that he left when he was about 2 years old . Many of his relatives back in Greece though spoke fluent Greek regarded themselves as Greek orthodox in faith and were totally assimilated into the Greek culture and customs as they ruled in Greece as princes and monarchs . Most of them were originally from Denmark. Phillip may have had German and Russian in him as well . He was certainly a mixture genetically which is why he was so devilishly good looking .

Yes, until it was high time that the so called "monarchy" was kicked out of Greece by Greek sovereigns for good reason. They served their purpose for what it was worth. It was high time, however, that they move on. The concept of Danish, British and German monarchs is a northern European quirk and concept.
Greece hasn't had an Emperor since the fall of the Byzantine Empire and they certainly didn't need a Royal family to take them through the 20th century.

Oh, for Pete's sake Andrew, make up a better story. They were NOT descended from Greeks. They did not speak Greek. Philip's grandfather (King George I of Greece) was the SON of King Christian IX of Denmark. George was ALSO the BROTHER of Queen Alexandra (wife of King Edward VII) and great grandmother of the present Queen. They were BLUE-EYED, BLOND LUTHERANS who spoke Danish and English (and provided excellent monarchs or spouses for monarchs). There was NO country of "Germany" until 1871. Philip's ancestors were SCANDINAVIAN not "German."
Elizabeth and Philip are DOUBLE cousins; both descended from Queen Victoria and from King Christian IX of Denmark. Christian IX was born in 1818 and Victoria was born in 1819. Christian IX delivered monarchs (or spouses of monarchs) to Denmark, Greece, England, Russia, Poland, Luxembourg, Norway and Spain. If Victoria was the "grandmother" of Europe, Christian was in the running for "grandfather" of Europe.

Princess Alice his Mother was A Grandchild of Queen Victoria And she was born in Windsor Castle. She gave the last of her jewellery [she sold all her others to feed the poor]a tiara for Philip to have made into an engament ring. The Queen Mother was very scathing of her As she wasnt glamorous or a soceity dame. But the Queen admired her and in Alice's final years had her live at the Palace. And got Philip and Alice back together. He realised in his later years what a wonderful woman she really was. The Queen Mother although loved was really only a social butterfly.
