It's hard to convey what it felt like for those of us who watched this in real time. We knew it was the season finale, but it was not advertised as a cliffhanger, nor was it referred to as "Part One" in the TV listings. So we're all watching this great episode, and looking at the clock thinking, "OK, it's ten minutes till the hour, how are they going to wrap this up in the next few minutes?" Then they hit us in the face with the "TO BE CONTINUED" and the tops of all our heads blew off.

Guinan alludes to this when she talks about the Borg having assimilated a bunch of different worlds. There are literally hundreds of billions of them on the other side of the galaxy. At the end of best of both worlds part two the look that Picard is giving is not so much that the Borg still in him but he has haunted by his experience. For their rank pips on the collar, the ranks go like this:
    Ensign- 1 gold pip
Lieutenant (Junior grade) - 1 gold and one black pip
    Lieutenant - 2 gold pips
Lt. Commander - 2 gold and 1 black pip
    Commander - 3 gold pips
    Captain - 4 gold pips
Then there are admirals that can have 1-4 gold pips surrounded by a gold box outline and a fancier gold trimmed uniform. There was also a crew member named O’Brien that was a non-commissioned officer, but his rank looked like that of a lieutenant. They wound up changing that later so someone else who was a Lieutenant could give him an order.

I was lucky enough to watch TNG during their original broadcasts when I was a kid. I can't articulate how utterly insane of a cliffhanger it was; Picard - one of the finest examples of humanity - being assimilated into a Borg, _and_ Riker deciding to fire?! Let's just say that summer was a long one. They don't make television like that anymore. A few notes: Riker's turmoil about moving on and taking up his own command was due to producer/writer Michael Piller's own issues with regards to staying with TNG or moving on to other opportunities. As such, what started as Picard episode became focused on Riker. Shelby was written in as a way to challenge Riker's resolve about these questions. Such focused, character-driven plots are exactly what the show needed. Keep in mind that at that point, TNG very much in the shadow of TOS; these became two of the defining episodes of the series.
Elizabeth Dennehy, the actress who played Shelby, explained that her character's arrogance and dismissive attitude were due to her never watching the show. Much like her character, she didn't have an emotional connections to the crew and was just doing a job. Hence why she didn't think much of Riker early on. Gates McFadden was included as part of the away team to the Borg cube because Dr. Crusher rarely got the chance to fire a phaser, and she thought it'd be cool. You might have recognized Admiral Hanson as "God" from Star Trek V. Lastly, you were right about the Wrath of Khan reference; the Paulson Nebula they hide in is actually recycled and enhanced images of the Mutara Nebula from the movie.
Anyway, you've finally made it through The Best of Both Worlds. One of the highest points in the series, but this story isn't over. Not by a long shot...

I remember this episode very well! This was the year that Star Trek The Next Generation really hit its stride and it just kept getting better every year. This episode had everything. I remember those last few minutes where it was revealed that Picard was assimilated into the Borg and then Riker had to make that tough decision to fire everything they had at him. My friends and I were like, "I can't believe the captain is now a Borg! I wonder what's gonna happen next?" After this we saw the Borg in different ways in subsequent episodes. This was the season where, in my opinion, the crew really came together. Picard was getting to the point where he was firm when he needed to be but he was becoming an avuncular father type for the crew and it was so shocking to see what the Borg had done to him. There were many other great episodes where Geordie was proving himself as chief engineer, Data was making significant discoveries into what it was to be human. A great story arc was starting where elements of the Klingon culture were revealed and how Worf became ostracized from his people--we even learned that he had a son! The show was really establishing itself from the original series. I even remember some of my friends claiming that they thought this was better than the original Star Trek! This was all good fun. Thank you for this reaction!

For TNG purposes, One solid gold is Ensign, one solid gold plus one black with gold outline is lieutenant junior grade, two solid gold is lieutenant, two solid gold plus a black with gold outline is lieutenant commander, three solid gold is commander and four solid gold is captain. There are other ranks like admiral and chief etc, but those are the main ones you see on TNG.

It's something he's got to grapple with for the rest of his life. To be honest, I'd recommend that instead of "Inner Light" you watch "I Borg" next. Hey Ollie, there is one more Star Trek episode relevant to the NG movies to do first and it's from TOS! It's called "Metamorphosis" from season 2 of TOS. The reason is because of a very, very important character in the Star Trek world it will feature, a character mentioned many times in the various series, and very much featured in one the NG movies you are going to do later! In fact, this character is what made it all possible, (beside Gene Roddenberry! LOL!). Definitely either do a react vid on Metamorphosis, or just watch it on your own. Just do it before the movies! And watching it will not hurt anything if you watch any of the original series later, and it'll give you a good TOS episode to experience. 🖖😎

    • @GrouchyMarx
      @GrouchyMarx Před rokem

Another thing. Since you missed watching Space Seed before Wrath of Khan, it's okay. Space Seed works good as a prequel since Ricardo Montalbán played Khan in both.
But a different actor plays this new character in Metamorphosis as opposed to who plays him in the NG movies so it's better to not treat Metamorphosis as a prequel and get it watched to know this mystery character first.

This was the first cliffhanger in Star Trek history. I remember watching this episode as a kid and being like WTF at the end. Remember, this was a time when killing off main characters wasn't the established norm as it is today, and this show had already established that precedent in the earlier seasons (which was also shocking for its time). So watching this and then having to wait half a year to see whether Picard would live or die was excruciating, but brilliant writing for it's time.

  • @tomyoung9049

Ok. Things you need to understand as someone who also lived through TNG's first run...
The Cliffhanger - as others have said, this was terrifying on so many levels, not the LEAST of which was.... we didn't know if another season WAS going to happen! It was possible that our beloved show would end right then and there.
The Borg - They are a hive, in both mentality and physicality, and behave as such. The first unit is killed by a weapon? Analyze the unit's breakdown patern. Second unit examins the weapon's properties. The Collective creates a possible Counter to the weapon and deploys it to the next Unit. If the Unit is destroyed, go back to start. They have so many drones it doesn't matter how many One-Offs are killed; they just collect the data and adapt. They are Technological Hyperevolution, and they are terrifying.
Locutus / Picard - We learn now, but have ot confirmed later... The Borg raped Picard; of his essence his memories, his individuality, his personhood. The very concept is anathema to The Human Condition.

Rewatching now, I'm realizing how much they set it up to make you think Picard could actually be permanently gone from the show. They really give the time to make it seem like Riker taking over as the new captain, with Shelby as his new first officer, COULD maybe really be a thing, with how much they set up that arc and dynamic. That could've been the show going forward! And honestly? While nothing could compare to Patrick Stewart in the captain's chair, that alternative might've also been an interesting way to go.

12:28 It's not that any individual Borg forgets their shield. It's that The Borg adapt. The first one dies to a phaser, and all the rest adjust their shields to the frequency. That, combined with the hive mindset that renders individuals as simply expendable parts to be replaced means one, two, even ten losses during adaptation is inconsequential.
