    What's so great about the conclusion, is that while there is a reset to the status quo, nothing that happened is forgotten, it's not all ok at the end. Thousands of star fleet personnel are dead, dozens of ships, many legacies of star fleet wiped out. This episode will reverberate for the rest of the series. Beyond that, Picard will have to deal with this trauma, and it sets up the future.

    It's so fascinating to see Katrina react to the show, especially this episode. Even though she only waited a third of what the original audience did, I feel she is exactly where we were at the time.
    Regarding the rank pips on the collar. Not everyone on the show had them. In some instances Picard has referred to some as 'crewman'. The pips indicates commissioned officer and the number and style solid and circle indicates the rank.
    It's interesting to see Katrina recount Riker's arc from the first season. It's very similar to Jonathan Frakes journey. Basically this was his first big gig and he was willing to do anything to make sure the show succeeds and that he stays on it. That resulted him eating actual live meal worms, and also being submerged in a pool of Metamucil mixed with oil and black printer's ink. Even LeVar Burton remarked "Frakes, I never would have done that!"

      @briansammond7801 Před 2 lety +1

  • @Tantalus010
    @Tantalus010 Před 3 lety +13

    To me, Riker's decision to let the Borg ship self-destruct was a no-brainer. There is no way they could have kept the cube inert long enough to study it thoroughly. The Borg would have eventually found a way to adapt to Data's hack. On top of that, the cube was already in the Sol system, so there was an imminent, extreme risk to Earth if something went wrong.

    • @jerodast
      @jerodast Před rokem +2

    @rafetizer Před 3 lety +19

    There's a lot of serious shots in these episodes, but the Enterprise arrival to Wolf 359's wasted battlefield really sticks out. Then there's the scene where Riker orders Wesley to set a collision course - man, that had to tear him up inside. I can't imagine having to order someone so young to their death. (along with everyone else aboard; all the other officers, civilians, and families) That ending shot with the Earth reflected on the ready room window shows just how close to home it hit, for Picard as well as the federation. I like the next installment the best out of the three episodes, but without The Best of Both Worlds, it just wouldn't exist. Kudos to one of the best "trilogies" in episodic television.

    • @kinagrill
      @kinagrill Před 2 lety +1

      It shows that, yes, Earth did it. It survived and prospered. But the issue is that Humanity and the Federation as a whole has forgotten to have a functional MIlitary. Especially since skirmishes with Klingons and Romulans have been little more than fringe-system interactions.
      The borg is extremely different by comparison.

    • @jerodast
      @jerodast Před rokem

      I agree with the theory that the families/civilians MUST have been evacuated offscreen at some point. Thinking otherwise just stretches the already absurd idea of an exploratory/border combat ship constantly putting civilians at risk, to an even more ludicrous degree.* And as Guinan says - as long as some of your people survive, you survive, even it takes a millennium. Adama realized at the end of the BSG pilot miniseries that keeping humanity alive was more important than going out in a blaze of glory. And Starfleet is way more enlightened than he is! The Enterprise is long-term habitation vessel which normally has a large self-contained chunk of society on board. It would be a cruel irony if one of humanity's best hopes to endure after the Genocide of Sector 001 was snatched away because Riker wanted RAMMING SPEED.
      Okay, then again, if he thought warping into the cube would really save Earth from assimilation, sure I'd order the death of thousands to do it too. But it still think he would've already offboarded the civvies haha. Besides, if he really thought that'd work, we'd have the same problem as the asinine "Last Jedi" introduced: If you just need a warp drive for a self-sacrificing tiny ship to blow up a much bigger one that completely outclasses it, then none of the starship combat we've ever seen in this universe really makes sense anymore.
      (*Obviously the DS9 pilot establishes that CERTAINLY some ships did NOT get to evacuate families. This pretty absurd too, but we could rationalize that the Enterprise's mission was PLANNED to go after the incredibly dangerous invader for several days, whereas the hastily assembled fleet was a last ditch plan when that mission failed. The fleet also expected the battle to be more like the wars of the past - with an opportunity for ships to withdraw after taking dangerous levels of damage, using the support of the other ships to cover their retreat. They didn't expect to get cut to ribbons in seconds, and didn't know how high the risk of death was for every single being aboard the fleet.)

      Uh...ANYWAY, I asked about this in another comment, but since you mentioned it, let me say again - did they cut out the Wolf 359 scene from this reaction? Just a turning point for the whole civlization.

    So I'm not sure if you already know this, but Patrick Stewart wanted to leave the show after the 3rd season, hence the cliffhanger which would've originally led to Picard's death on the Cube. During the filming break over the summer though, while driving, a woman pulled up alongside Stewart and yelled at him, saying, "You know, you ruined my whole damn summer." After seeing just how much people were into the show, and his character, how much they cared about Picard's fate, he changed his mind and decided to return forcing the entire script to be re-written in the span of two weeks. Also, LeVar Burton was suffering from an eye infection during filming which is why O'Brien helps in rescuing Picard instead and why we see so little of La Forge.

    Here's where TV storytelling diverts reality. If this had "actually" happened, this would've ended the "Enterprise family". Picard as a recovered Borg (An encounter in which one of their ships nearly ended the Federation) would be an asset too valuable to be anywhere but at Starfleet Command for his knowledge. Several of the Senior Officers would be getting new jobs as Starfleet has to rebuild the fleet and needs experienced personnel badly; Data and Worf at the very least would be getting commands or becoming first officers on new ships.

I've also always loved that bit near the end with Data ripping the end off Locutus' arm. The same characters come back the next episode, no matter what happens. The credits roll, the show is over, and we start again next week. All the action shows, it'd take months to get there guys back to work between missions.
    4x2 is one of the most important episodes, because they don't just go to the next adventure. It's BoBW Part 3; and they snuck it in.

    The Enterprise arriving at Wolf 359 was probably one of the most chilling moments in Star Trek history. It was far more of an emotional moment to see the aftermath of the battle, rather than the battle itself. In the past, it was only on rare occasions that even one Federation Starship would be destroyed. To see the broken and smashed Federation ships massacred and hopelessly slaughtered in such numbers made the Borg seem even more unstoppable.

It was from season 4 onwards that they accumulated writers who really stuck around (Jeri Taylor, Joe Menosky, and Brannon Braga).

    Wolf 359 is a real star system not far from our own.
    During that battle 69 ships and 11 000 Starfleet personnel were lost.
    Starfleet took a bitchslap and it made some changes necessary in ships design. Subsequent ships design will have more powerful warfare capabilities as a result.
    The character of Shelby was expanded in the non canonical fan series Hidden Frontier where she goes from Commander to Admiral... but the events of this series are kinda linked to other ST shows as well as the ninth movie. Production quality was not high, that series was made nearly 15 to 20 years ago already.
