    I bought the og Steam Deck last year, traveled with it, ran an impromptu Street Fighter 6 tournament with it in my hotel room in Times Square and fell in love with it. Then i modded the shell on my own (that shell swap was TOUGH but doable!) and i ended up falling in love with it even more. I got a SUPER LIT year end/christmas bonus so i said why not? decided too buy a Legion Go...finally bought it from Micro Center for like $100 bucks off and when i tell you i havent been able to put this thing down yet! Its literally been months of me throwing whatever i can at this device, FF7Remake, Tekken 8, Gran Blue Fantasy: Relink, etc and seeing for far i can push it. I actually decided too continue my GamePass PC subscription well past the trial ending. Not only does Persona 3 Reload looks so beautiful on this screen but it also was free lol. Lenovo is definitely TRYING but they could also be doing a much better job supporting this device to make to software a little more seamless, Armory Crate seems to be getting much more TLC and it shows.

    something i want to point out is that the analog sticks on the Ally aren’t soldered to the PCB so they can easily be switched out with Hall Effect sticks, connected with ribbon cables, which use magnetic input they might feel better and aren’t prone to stick drift. i’ll be switching my right analog with these as the left analog stick is susceptible to interference from the hall effect trigger right behind it which would force you to use a higher deadzone.

    It's the Legion GO for me. I need that computer like aspect of being able to use it as a laptop. The controller turning into a mouse is also really cool. The 8.8 inch screen is also a huge plus. I have decided that if you are going on a long trip and need longer battery life you could buy a powerbank that has 2/3 times the battery life and just keep it plugged in (then you'll get about 3/4 times longer play/work time).

    I would dock one more point off Go’s software score. It’s pretty clunky. Sometimes the performance settings window doesn’t pop up. The frame rate would show, then a few clicks more the window finally pops up.
    I wanted to try the Ally next, but having the Go double as a tablet is a pretty big win, even if it’s a bit sluggish compared to, say, an iPad Mini

    • @rannxerox3970

      As a Go user, I would totally agree with this. But that is a software issue and Lenovo does seem to be dedicated to supporting the device and have been giving significant updates regularly and have mentioned they will be coming out with a new iteration of hardware. One of my biggest grips is that the lack of support for all the extra buttons on the back. Steam sees the Go as a G1 X controller, won't even map a X button. They really need to fix this above all else.

    I just sold my old Steam Deck to my Bro and ordered the OLED. The many control options made me fall in love with it. I also heavily considered the Legion as well, but many reports on it getting REALLY hot threw me off (heat in one of my personal biggest annoyances with any handheld device), plus the even slightly less so pocketable factor.

      You can also stream games from your gaming PC to your Steam Deck with Steam's built in streaming and third party streaming apps like Moonlight. You can do this with other handhelds too. So effectively your performance ceiling is bound by your most powerful system in-house. I bet this is also a solution to Steam Deck compatibility problems with popular battle royale games. With this in mind, you've equalized all the handhelds in terms of performance and compatibility. At that point, you're looking at which has the better battery life and better user experience. Both of which go to the Steam Deck in this context.

      @JJsTimelapse Před 2 měsíci +1

      Check if the SteamDeck can run everything. For ESO for example you need a workaraound to run it, because when starting the game via steam, you only start the launcher from where you launch the game itself. Might be the case for GW2 as well.
      The ROG and the Legion Go however are portable windows pcs. If a game runs on windows, it runs on these devices.

    • @tapo9478
      @tapo9478 Před 2 měsíci

      Guild Wars 2 runs fine on the Steam Deck. If you have an account from before GW2 was on Steam you can pass in a simple command to use your old login. I haven't played Palworld on it yet but its apparently playable with frame drops. That's going to be the case for a lot of UE5 titles running on these handhelds.
      I've played ESO on it as well and it works great, but you need to do the initial install from desktop mode since it takes you through that installer.
      RDR2/CP2077/Horizon/Borderlands all run well without issues.

      For example when I hold L1, R1 becomes 1, and my Abxy buttons become 2345;
      And when I hold R1, L1 becomes 6, and abxy buttons become 7890.

      The Steam Deck really is the best overall experience. It's incredibly console-like in that way, even down to the sights and sounds of navigating the UI. You really feel like you're experience a different gaming ecosystem, where the other handhelds are just Windows machines. The only thing holding the Steam Deck back is CPU/GPU performance, but that gives me hope for the Steam Deck 2. If the Steam Deck 2 can launch with a 120Hz+ OLED panel, top-tier GPU/CPU, upgraded cooling to support the more powerful hardware, and larger storage options as standard again, they'll have an instant winner. They don't need to change anything else about the design IMO. Just internal upgrades, another screen refresh, and make sure the cooling can support the hotter hardware.

    I think the Ally and the Legion Go can more closely mimic a pc experience than the Steam Deck (especially when docked), but then why not get a laptop or a desktop. The Steam Deck is in my opinion, the best handheld in its category. There’s a difference between cramming a pc into a handheld form factor, and creating a fully optimized handheld gaming device.

      I have a gaming laptop, but for whatever reason, I hate sitting in my chair and gaming on it. I've always loved gaming on handhelds while lying down on the couch or my bed. So I never really used it for gaming unless I was playing an FPS game. I bought a Steamdeck last year and I primarily used that for games, however, it had some serious limitations. A lot of the games in my library didn't run well or at all. So I bought the Legion Go recently and now I've been using it as a PC and handheld gaming console. I like the idea that I can use it like a PC, then unplug it and go game on the couch. Or if I remove the joycons, I can use it like a tablet. It's versatile, but I can see why people would rather just spend the money on a gaming PC/laptop instead.

      If you’re interested, there’s a video on CZcams called something like install windows 11 on microSD steam deck no pc required. Even provides the windows 11 file to install!

    Emulation is why I replaced my SD with a Legion Go, well that and the bigger screen. The CPU was always its weak point as the gpu would frequently be sitting at near desktop speed while the CPU was at full speed and frequently throttling, even with my JSAUX back with heat plate with 2 big NVME heatsinks on top of that. Plus for me with the LLG, I get all my PC games plus Steam big picture as the gui, as well as the big screen and high refresh rate, with a res that perfectly scales to the SD res and so can play the games with SD optimised settings at SD res but with more performance. I certainly got my moneys worth from the SD, as it was a fun device that showed me it can be done after all these years (AMD netbooks were the last affordable almost gaming handheld PC I tried and that was barely even able to run WoW at the lowest settings at the time), but now the Legion Go is my choice, to the point I gave my SD away as it was gathering dust and I didn't want to see it go to waste.
    To be honest, as Lenovo have been fixing their issues and how they have been really open about things, my trusty old steam deck would not even get a look in and it wasn't even close, and as good as the OLED one seems, it would be nothing but a downgrade as its still a smaller lower refresh rate screen and noticeable worse performing. The only thing I really miss is the slightly rounded edges to the controller that made it that bit more comfortable, but other than that, going back to even the OLED would be like having a PS5 and then having to go back to the PS4, yeah many of the games would be the same, but it would be a real step backwards on all fronts.

    Missed the most important monitor stat though, and that would bring the LCD Steam Deck to first place if the competition was lacking. How dim do they get? (and how seamless is this to adjust). Honestly, to me this is the most important of all the monitor features you listed. It probably isn't to most people. So my "most important" is subjective. And idk if there's a good way to give it as a stat, but even to just describe it. I have heard the LED Steam Deck is even better for dimming. I have no idea about the others though.
