There are a TON of handheld consoles with Valve, ASUS, and Nintendo dominating the space, but Lenovo is coming in with an interesting idea -- taking features from all the existing handhelds and putting them together into one machine. With detachable controllers, a huge high-res screen, and a built-in mouse, is this the ultimate package, or is software the chief decider of a great device?

I personally don't have many issues with the track pad but I always use the touchscreen for everything. Also integer scaling is awesome on this device. I picked up the Ally and I absolutely love this space now. All these early devices have some notable flaws or omissions. Although in day to day use the only thing that ever gave me some pain was the custom software. Thankfully Asus has actually been hard at work fixing and upgrading that software every month or so since I picked it up. It's hasn't given me any noticeable annoyance in months.

    • @adamgerald849
      @adamgerald849 Před 5 měsíci +5

No way dude. Nintendo is always too high from huffing their own farts to base any of their decisions on their competition. Let's face it, the Switch is outdated. It was impressive at launch and had some really good ideas, but $300 for a switch OLED, when you can get the base Steam Deck for $400 and emulate all of the Switch games you want. It should be a no-brainer but so many Nintendo fans basically worship them that they'll buy anything they sell. I love Nintendo's IPs and they do design games around gameplay instead of graphics and story (unlike most AAA devs) and I love that about them. Games should be centered around gameplay, but I digress. I also hope these "Switch Killers" light a fire under Nintendo's ass and they start making some better decisions instead of just relying on their die-hard fan boys to buy everything that has a tri-force logo on it. I'm pumped that the handheld PC market is finally kicking off. Can't wait to see what will be around in a few more years.

I've had a Z1 Extreme ROG Ally since launch, and even though I've had to deal with a few serious technical headaches, I've come to enjoy having and using it more and more as time goes on. ASUS has also added some really sweet software features post-launch, such as a new 900p display mode, AMD's Hyper-X driver upscaling/processing technology, and just this week, full gyroscope control support and manually toggle-able CPU boost right from Armory Crate. The Legion GO looks like it has a lot of promise moving forward and it seems like a genuinely very cool piece of kit, but in its current state there's no reason for me to switch from the Ally even if I could afford it. It is very cool to see how much competition we're getting in the handheld PC space though, and so far it's led to some pretty great offerings. Besides the cost of say an Aya neo, the custom inputs it has are awesome, even as somone who mostly doesn't use it. I also am one of the few who prefers steam deck's look to everything else competing with it. It's clean and smooth, compared to the Aya or other competitors which feel jagged. With Valve and Asus having months to years of user feedback, it is not surprising that Lenovo falls short on software, but also has an advantage on hardware. My two biggest gripes are all of the useless buttons that cant be mapped for gaming outside of remapping them in legion space to buttons that are already on the face...and the deadzones...I think the ALLY went through the deadzone woes, and LeGO users are right in the middle of it right now.

Somehow missed this video, and the existence of the device, until just a few days ago when I was considering gifting myself a Deck or an Ally. Had the Ally in the checkout cart when I noticed the Go being recommended. Started looking at it and the display and detachable controller and 2x USB and working SD card slot all just made it worth it.
I was reading about people complaining about the Legion software... but I don't really have any issues with it. Like anything new it just took a few minutes of me messing with it to understand it fully. And even then I still decided to tell it not to launch it on startup and I removed it from the taskbar. I basically can entirely forget it's there, I just use the device more as a regular Windows laptop/tablet hybrid. Just run it for whatever updates they put out but that's it.
And since I just use it as a Windows device the mouse was easy enough to adapt to for navigation... but I'll admit, despite moving to PCs over 10 years ago I still prefer to play shooters with controllers. I didn't devote 90% of my waking pre-adult life playing Halo on Xbox to lose that skill forever lol.

Just get the Steam Deck OLED. The performance isn’t as great but it is beyond the threshold of good enough. Not to mention it’s better at lower power which is far more important. These other devices peak at 18 watts where the Steam Deck is around 11. That makes a huge difference and the device is actually usable untethered. It makes the right compromises in the correct areas. And the software experience is by far the best.

I’ve had mine for a week now and I love it. The Lenovo software strikes a decent balance between taking over Windows and still allowing you to do normal Windows things. If you’re a current or old PC gamer then updating it out of the box is just like any other day, but if you’re more of a console person that isn’t used to tinkering then there’s going to be a learning curve.
My biggest complaint is the speakers. They need to be capable of about 25% more volume. Also worth mentioning there’s a beta firmware/driver in the pipeline that adds quite a bit of performance. Why are you so rough on it? It’s prolly me just being poor. I value anything above $100

pretty much all professional lenovo laptops i've used had this agonizing trackpad palm detection "feature" that drives me nuts. There is also a small trackpad freeze timeout each time you press a key meaning you can't move the mouse at the same time you press a key. you have to basically revert to the windows default trackpad driver which, depending on the laptop, might not be the best option either... I wish an unofficial driver was made for that.

I just tested it in Belgium. Its heavy but tough, much better looking screen than MSI and ROG but all the buttons are just annoying when holding it. At some point I had no idea if I was clicking things or not. Thank God for touch screen which helped me get out all of the weird UI I was catching. I learned it the hard way that 1st gen of anything in tech needs to be avoided. I imagine they followed directly Steamdeck which followed Switch Oled. All we need now is for ROG and MSI to improve on their devices and I might replace my Dell G15 laptop with one of these and a macbook. We havent seen one from Alienware, Acer or HP so lets see if they jump on board.

I want the steam OLED screen; the ally form factor; and the legion detachable controls (with a better button scheme)... Too bad none is perfect.

Yh, if only rog ally has OLED and detachable controllers, it will be the best handheld for me.

It’s so much better at 800p with integer scaling on. Still not an option by default (requires a registry change).

The software really does it for me. I don't think the ally or the legion go can compete with steam on the software yet. When I think of a portable device I think of a fully integrated software/hardware experience and if I constantly have to battle with the software to make my controls work smoothly it's going to ruin that experience for me.

I really wish companies like Asus and Lenovo would use Linux instead of Windows. Valve has done so much for gaming on Linux. Windows is sometimes awful. So many times I wanted to switch to Linux but couldn't because of gaming but now it seems like gaming on Linux can thrive.

LINUX is the worst operating system. I can’t imagine actually wanting to use it for day-to-day stuff.

I love that more competition keeps entering this space. I'm probably just going to stick with Valve's Steam Decks as I just prefer the FAR more polished software experience. Having likely about a decade lead in that department with the Steam controller, Link and Machine software development, I trust that Valve will actually continue to innovate in this space. Who knows, maybe Asus, Lenovo and others will see enough interest to justify continued software support. Like others have said, the Steam Deck isn't perfect and lacks a few features I'd love to have (USB 4 with e-GPU support, for instance). With as quickly as Valve's release of the new Steam Deck OLED though, I think it won't be very long before we will start seeing similar hardware in higher end models as well.

the Ally's software experience is very good as well, and its backed on Windows so no compatibility issues between different store fronts. Honestly its a huge win over the steam deck imo, also its about 40-50% more powerful. I had both and completely stopped using my Steam Deck when I got the Ally. Not to mention how much more smooth sub 60 FPS feels on a VRR screen.

Give it over double steam deck performance to make full use of its display with similar battery life then it would make total real deal to purchase over steam deck otherwise nice try.

Guess what - the performance is 2-4x higher!
I just got one and compared to my steam deck lcd, it's two to four times as powerful.
      Absolute beast.
      Even star citizen is playable!
A surprisingly large number of games work great at 1600p, especially with upscaling. Eg hogwarts legacy.
And you also have the option of 1200p which looks great or 800p (enable integer scaling through regedit)
      It's a fantastic device
