Interlinear Bible - Which One is Right For You?

- Hendrickson Publishers really does some nice work with editions that were once out of print and giving them new life. Many of them are available online for free, but I, for multiple reasons, want a physical copy of the book in my possession. This is a need they have met for me many times over the years. Some time ago I bought the single volume Interlinear Bible Hebrew/Greek/English put together by Jay P. Green Sr and found it very useful. The thumbnail shows the single volume I purchased, and the volume set I recently received for review. Both are a reprint of the 2nd Edition which was completed in 1986 (First edition was completed in the 70s).
While the 2nd Edition was intended to fix some errors, there are still some typos and errors in the text. Hendrickson only copies the originals so any errors, typesetting issues, and print inconsistencies are still going to be there. While this is a frustration for some (for example a couple of times the incorrect Strongs number is placed above the Hebrew/Greek word) I actually find it endearing. Yes, it can lead to a moment of confusion, but once you realize it, it is not that difficult to sort out.
With all that said, a huge disadvantage to the single volume is not only it’s massive size (11 x 8.75 x 2) but it’s TINY print size. This is especially true on the Literal Translation of the Bible next to its Hebrew/Greek counterparts (in a less than easy to use double column format, see pics). The English words on the Interlinear AND the Literal Translation of the Bible are just shy of 2/16ths of an inch tall. I am positive what that font size is, but if my math is correct that means it is a 3pt font. That’s tiny.
The four volume set has about a 6pt font if my math is correct. Still not large, but significantly larger than the single volume. The volume set also has a much more manageable trim size (9 x 6 x 1.5). There’s really only a few ways to put an edition like this in print and Hendrickson decided to try two. One thing that really makes the 4 volume set, in my opinion the best option is the layout. It is set up in a single column format with the Literal Translation of the Bible in the outer column. It just seems much less overwhelming and much simpler to use.
This is such an amazing tool for any student of the word that doesn’t have the original languages mastered. Not only do you have a readable translation in the outer column translated word for word, but you also have the interlinear bible with each word above it’s Hebrew and Greek counterpart. Each word also includes the appropriate Strongs number so you can use your Concordance/Dictionary to dive deeper in the meaning of the word. Keep in mind, this is not a bible dictionary, it is a translation.
One word of caution. Whenever you read a translation that is the work of a single individual you have to keep in mind they translate and interpret it in light of their theological framework. Works like this should always be diligently compared to translations done by a trusted committee of people with a diversity in understanding, theology, and background. This greatly reduces the opportunity for unchecked bias in a translation.
Regardless, this is among the most valuable resources in my library and I am thrilled to have the volume set that may take more bookshelf space, but addresses several issues the single volume cannot. I look forward to giving you your Nickels Worth soon, meanwhile the links below show where they can be purchased. Always check around for any sales, especially with Hendrickson because they often discount their books.
*These are a glued binding, keep that in mind.

Perhaps a person could use the multi volume set at home and keep the single volume with them wherever they go
Thanks for the video review. Very helpful in making my final decision
Thanks for the video! God bless you brother ❤️
G'day Tim another great review. One thing I admire with your channel is the way you handle the books, especially the Bible. Some channels basically throw the Bible around and are very rough with them.
Your handling is gentle and with some reverence. Thank you again for your great content.
I have that in the set it’s amazing. God bless you
Good Breakdown
I found this video while looking for any resources about the tremendous amount of typos in this (I have the blue single volume edition), and sure enough, you mentioned that right off the bat. They really need to publish a full list of typos on their website… surely a list exists somewhere.
I do know I contacted them and they said in order to fix them it would have to be completely retypeset because the typos are part of the original document.
That would be a looooong list, mainly of Strong's numbers - not that there are not a lot of other typos, misprints, lack of proofreading, misplaced lines and paragraphs, etc.
awesome review, loved that you had both options to look at and thank you for the warning on typos...are these typos just mismatching strong #s? Or are there also typos with the scriptures themselves?
Typos in the introductory material and the strongs numbers are all I’m aware of. Still a great resource for the price.
Thank you now I know which set to buy I have been trying to decide for a week. I would like a strongs concordance recommendation that goes beat with the 4 book set please if you can.
I don’t know that you’d need a strongs with this. I don’t think there are any that would match the set.
Thank you. You've just saved me some serious frustration and regret..........and money.
I have the original greens without the stongs numbers. easy read 4 volumes.
Great video! I have been holding out on these to see if someone will release anything with a little bit bigger print. I want an interlinear but both are still kind of small for me. I would want those strong's numbers but I am okay without the literal translation on the side. Any suggestions?
Not that I am aware of.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews After watching your video, I went ahead and got the NT from the 4 volume set to see if it could work for me. It is quite readable for me. If anyone else is on the fence, I would say go ahead! Thanks for all that you do.
The four volume set is DEFINITELY the better option when it comes to readability.
I want the blue one to be my pew bible until I finish learning Greek and Hebrew. 🙏
Four volume set is better for those who have trouble seeing, as the text is bigger. But its total weight is 10ish pounds. First!
It also uses the Masoretic text base (with majority text - for the Hebrew) and the Greek is the Textus Receptus.
When I had it, it was missing verses. I contacted the publisher, and they told me that since Jay Green died, they can't make an amendments to it.
Does anyone know how I could find out more about the Strong's book that accompanies this interlinear bible? If you could tell me exactly which Strong's book it is then I will locate one somewhere.
I don’t know about a Strongs that is an actual companion to this book, but any Strongs Concordance would get the job done. I use mine with it just fine.
Hello sir, I want to ask what book is under the TV under your table, which is the one with the largest volume?
That’s a Hebrew English lexicon from Hendrickson if you are referencing the gray one. The burgundy one is a Matthew’s Commentary.
I know it is a long shot, but have you found a interlinear bible that contains the Hebrew, Greek, English, AND Latin?
I have not.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews thanks for responding, if you ever do could you please do a video for it too? That's the kind I'm looking for!
Baronius Press has a Latin side by side that I’ve done a video on. That’s about the closest thing you’ll get. If you search my most popular videos it will be one of them.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews I'll check it out, thanks!!
Could you drop a link to the strongs bible you mentioned at the end of the video?
The one I pointed to is long out of print but there is an updated edition. Keep in mind, Strongs is organically keyed to the KJV. I do think they’ve added other translations, but I know nothing about any updates.

@anickelsworthbiblereviews ,thank you so much
This is one case where it might be best having it digitally on a tablet. Maybe . . .
At the very least, you could probably blow it up to where you can read it w/out a magnifying glass.
There’s definitely a strong case for digital. I just can’t get used to it.
there's just something about holding Gods word in your hand with the pages between your fingertips isn't it? =)@@anickelsworthbiblereviews
does this translate to the KJV text ?.. cuz right now the only one I am using is the Kingdom translation and it translates the Greek N.T. into the NWT text... and also omits several verses... the NWT text I find it to be worthless...I want to find an interlinear bible that I can follow the words into the KJV translation please...
This one follows a literal translation. I do not believe it eliminates any of the TR verses but I’ll check to be certain.

I was really curious... because according to David W. Daniels.. just a slight addition to the las Greek word in Luke 2:14 changed the whole phrasing at the end of the verse from "Peace on earth, good will toward men".. to what many modern translations read..."on earth Peace to men of good will."... or as the ASV states.. :among those with whom He is pleased"...
changing the subject of the verse to the nominative... AND my interlinear has the little backwards squiggle at the end of the word..
εὐδοκία ...... he states that the little ς at the end of this word changes the phrasing...
AND unfortunately the version of this I have translated by the NWT committee.. has the word as.. εὐδοκίας
interesting, I got the 4 book back in the day. But then I messed around and got me the Logos Bible Software 10.
edit: I meant that as a good thing (LBS10)
does any of them do gamateria?
why was anything female changed to spirit??? for example in ezekiel . a spirit took him to another room but the interlibear has something like …. she took him. that completely paints a different picture
I haven’t noticed this, but keep in mind it’s the work of an individual and that needs to be considered. I’ll take a look when I’m back in the office.
Do you recommend a website that has interlinear online free?
Bible Hub has one.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews Found it. Thank you!
The Blueletter Bible website also lets you see each Greek or Hebrew word behind the text, read definitions, and see all other uses of the word in scripture. It's an excellent resource!
are there other interlinear bibles out there?
Crossway has something similar but not really.
So the four volume has a bigger font? Ok. So Amazon says that this is based on the masoretic text and the textus receptus like the king James. So is this just a more clunky literal version of King James?
The benefit is having the strongs numbers and original words in their exact order to compare.
I want one without typos please.
Not gonna happen.
The New Testament was translated into Greek , that’s history.😊
Matthew perhaps. But not the New Testament.
Into Greek from what?
I thought they spoke Aramaic in Jesus's day...Ive heard that repeatedly from different pulpits
Might explain how many "Greek" (Platonic/Neo-Platonic) ideas made their way into the NT.
