Hi my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent come from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I will only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people will consider this the lowers time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After, trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I are have been living full-time in my self convert van.
Emi, your meal is not only healthy but beautiful. What amazes me is you do this in a parking lot in a VAN.
Many cooking videos, even by pro chefs, show a single burner (usually induction) on a countertop to 'get rid of the clutter' of a multi-burner stove in the shot. What amazes me is how humid it must get in the van. When I lived in my van I cooked rice, potatoes ans soups/stews outside on picnic tables. I even had both a hood fan(!) and a max air fan in the roof. Even so, with the humidity of the propane stove + the foods, my little temp/humidity reader would be at 65 - 85% after cooking. Yikes!
They’ve closed two of our local Walmarts. The homeless were really making a mess of it. The theft got outrageous. It’s sad for sure.
Our Wal-Mart has just posted "No Overnight Parking" signs all over the parking lot here in south central Ontario. It's a shame because there is a ton of space in the lot, and was used in the summer, but unfortunately, the few spoil it for the many. Have a great day Emi and Kelly.
It is not about a bit of nuisance for Walmart. It is a far, far bigger and more global agenda at play. Google "15 Minute City" and "Smart Cities". The UN is what is at play here.
There are signs posted at the Loveland CO Walmarts too saying no overnight parking, but it's not enforced. I park there all the time, but leave in the morning.
so sad to see this happening--1999 through 2021 I lived in a small class C all over the country from California to Florida and Texas to New York--back then there was no problem--I spent the night at Walmarts many nights, parked in neighborhoods, parked at truck stops and rest areas--nicest rest area was in South Carolina somewhere, had actual camping sites--no hook ups but barbques, picnic tables and a 48 hour max stay--fabulous--all these places were free, btw--in 2 and 1/2 years I paid for camping 4 nights, not cause I wanted to but I needed to. Times change but it's the people , a few of them, in the nomad life that fouled it up for the rest--so sad

Actually closing Walmart or not letting park overnight
I used to work overnight at Walmart. The whole time I workrd there we only had one camper dump their garbage all over the parking lot. Truckers stopped in our parking lot when highways were closed because of snowstorms. It was a campervan in our parking lot a long time ago that guest made me think I'd like to do that. It seems to me that since the pandemic people are much meaner and ruder than they were before the pandemic. I hope it turns around.

I'm in Las Vegas, Nevada. Walmart doesn't let you park overnight here. Too many people living in their vehicles have squatted there for long periods of time. Their biggest problem aside from squatting has been people dumping waste and trash there. Wal-Mart/the city considers that a health hazard. Everyone Please be considerate of others. Dont over stay your welcome and find an appropriate place to dump your bottles so we don't lose any more places to sleep.
You’re absolutely right Emi. It’s very sad there are inconsiderate nomads that ruin it for the majority. You’re analogy was spot on with your example of being a guest in someone’s house. Even my husband and I tidy up our hotel room before we check out because we’re not slobs.

4 yrs ago I took a 5000 mile 4 month trip in USA. I called Walmart’s and asked permission to park several nights and they all said “we just had a meeting and the manager said No more overnight parking”.
It’s sad a few people trashy people ruined it for all of us.”
Many Walmart’s told me people were staying for months and some were dumping their black tanks in the parking lot and leaving trash everywhere.
Always the few that ruin it for everyone.
And they would do you bodily harm if you tried to explain their actions caused this. Totally disordered behavior.
You are right about people leaving trash where ever they go. I live in an apartment where some residents won't throw their garbage away in a trash can or into the dumpster. They throw garbage down in the grass or out their car window. My father taught me never to throw anything out of my car, but wait to throw it away in a garbage can. I always wait to throw it away properly and am grateful to my dad for teaching me to be a responsible person. We all need to be a good example.
A lot of Walmarts are also closing here in the state side.

Yes the 2 walmarts in my city are closed to overnighters as well due to some people not caring and causing problems.

Park out of the way, try to be invisible (no slide outs, tents, chairs, grills outside) and just stay for a night.

I was at a Walmart this morning and people had their big RVs with the pullouts open, camping chairs etc. i thought ,,, that is exactly why they are stopping overnight Parking. Love all your meals… I just got a cooler so now I can have tofu! Yum! Meowwwwww to Kelly!

Walmarts are always a safe place to stay for a night, we have many times during our travels. We go in and shop for some groceries while there. We leave no garbage, and respect them for allowing us the stay. You’re right about some people abusing it, leaving garb all over and acting like it’s a regular campground. When we have travelled into the US some Walmarts have also put up no camping. We have heard that a lot of RV parks have complained about them allowing overnight stays. In Salmon Arm that’s what happened. Safe travels to you and kitty.
Some travelers need to be grateful that there are places, parking lots, that they can stop, sleep, rest, and not to trash it when it is time for them to move on to the next destination. Show courtesy and be thankful that they are able to use this parking lots for their safety if in need a place for the night. Imagine some people who trash the parking lots after they spend a night or so must have the same way of living when they are in the actual house. They carry it on wherever they go.

I was surprised to learn sesame seeds have a lot of nutrients in it. Its not just a burger bun decoration like I used to think. 😂
I add sesame seeds to my blender mixes.
Sesame seeds can be hard for your body to digest & get stuck in colon crevices. They are high in oxylates, which cause stone build-up in the body; like kidney stones, gallstones, bone spurs, etc. There are several veggies/nuts/seeds that are high in oxylates, like almonds & spinach too. I prefer sesame oil for my skin as an emoliant, rather than eating them. It's used in Ayruvedic for the skin.😊

I agree with you. I am not a nomad but a tent camper and the number of people that leave garbage behind is astounding. One time I confronted one of these fine people, there response was Oh they have people to clean it so I don't need to. I said this is not a hotel with room service they responded, whatever and F off. The finest kind!
I clean up aroundn my neighborhood in Québec (just got a portable upright garbage "bag" on Amazon to do it more easily) and people always ask me if i am a paid worker and why do i do it.
It's a shame that some people are so disrespectful to property, it messes it up for everyone. So if they do ban van life they will be a huge part of the reason why!!

In the Netherlands the rules are also very strict. I believe you are allowed (sometimes) to stand in the same public place for max 3 nights. But not with an outdoor tent or chairs/tables etc. So only your bus/caravan. There are special camper parking spaces, but often you have to pay for them. Or on real camping places. but that is often really expensive. More and more people are forced to live in their cars in our country. Many (internationa-) students too. The housing shortage is very high. The rents are shockingly high in the big city Amsterdam/Den Hague etc. I sometimes worry about our world in which the absolute rich ones still have privileges and ordinary workers etc have nothing.
Overnight camping at Walmart has been closed quite a while here in Texas. The app called calm is free and I like it sometimes.
Those knitted headbands with speakers in them would be great for bed cause then they wouldnt obstruct anything while your trying to sleep.

Absolutely noise cancelling headphones can be great to calm down. I had to spend a week in hospital last summer and I would wear mine at night just to sleep, as it kept out the noise of other people on the ward...

If you don’t already do this, you can also turn on closed captioning on almost all video. I always turn them on; they help with general comprehension and let me lower the volume. One caution with the headphones: watch out for tinnitus and stop using them if you start hearing ringing in your ears (or more intense ringing if you already have it).

Unfortunately, it's a trickle down affect too.. The more they close off over night camping, the more people just move down the road to the next store, until it closes and then to the next!! Same thing is happening in the forest as well.
Well in Washington Oregon state is closing lots of stores because of so much people going in and taking stuff out door no pay. We're talking like 20 to 50 at one time

It is sad that some van/car dwellers don’t take care of the area. I have seen in one of the Walmarts in my area had banned the overnight parking because the parking lot would get dirt and recently they opened it back up but same thing is happening and people are taking advantage so I am sure they will ban again. It is sad and unfair for those that do respect the area and use it appropriately (we had an elderly friend of ours in a mini RV that use to stay there at night before the first ban) -from Florida

At one of our local Walmart’s, they have a recording of loud sounds (car alarm, talking parrot and other loud annoying sounds) to discourage people from parking in their lot. Im sure the houses that were built behind the Walmart will have that shut off …

I work at Walmart and I can say the thievery is getting really bad. They haven't told us the losses recently but I know a few years ago it doubled from $400,000. a year to $ 800,000. When I'm stalking all night I find all kinds of empty boxes etc hidden behind stuff on my shelves in my area, and that's just the aisles I'm stocking not the rest of the store.

Wireless headphones are bad for you due to the excessive EMF exposure, wired headsets are better.
I believe Wal-Marts in the U.S. here do not allow overnight parking as well; but some people ask managenent & they let them stay overnight in the parking lot I've heard.

I saw this is San Francisco, where some of us used to park near the beach - now they have homeless encampments with broken down RV's drugs and garbage strewn around - no place for us to stay there because now it is no longer over night camping because of this mess.
Very well said, they have shut down all of the Walmarts in the areas I travel to overnight stay. It is very sad but it only takes a few to ruin it for the rest of us. I'm going to try your orange tofu!

Listening to nature sounds or white noise or green noise with your headphones while you sleep makes for a better sleep. That is, if you are a back sleeper or if a side sleeper, some wireless earbuds are good to use.
You can also stick a small flat wireless bluetooth speaker under your pillow. This is good because it doesn't lessen your personal security by interfering with your ability to hear what's going on around you. You can still hear your surroundings through the ear that doesn't rest on your pillow.

It’s not the trash alone it’s people over staying in one spot and vehicle dwelling has become so over populated. But it’s not just the vehicle dwellers it homelessness as well. Back in the day it wasn’t a problem if you saw a few here and there but now it’s a whole different ball game. I love the idea of haven’t a mobile home to just get up and go when needed, but like the part time concept better. However I might have to establish van dwelling full time in my senior years because of the cost of inflation. So I’m preparing my self for the van dwelling life style.

Unfortunately, the flood of millions of bad apples taking over Vanlife is ruining everything. It’s unfortunate that they leave their trash and feces behind-eventually causing places that once were welcoming to nomads, to shut leaving good & responsible people paying the price of those bad apples.
You are so right. My wife and I are gypsy van livers and it seems to us it's only proper edict and respect to not trash the places we stay. Breaks my heart to see so much disrespect is shown by some of my fellow gypsy folk.

Sad people will never learn that being selfish will only make things difficult for themselves along with others. They should start caring more as they will face not having anywhere to go. Most of the people who take advantage are the ones that don't have money to keep moving wish they would stop and realize that they are not helping they're situation. I wish the management would start to tell people they will be towed away if they don't leave by a certain time in the morning, they. Should have parking hours restrictions.
