Hi my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent come from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I will only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people will consider this the lowers time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After, trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I are have been living full-time in my self convert van.

Yeah, I would have taken down the license plate. You gotta teach them a lesson or they will do it again. Back in April, a band of 7-8 teenagers where screaming at elderly people on the sidewalk on Denman Street. I called the cops and Vancouver Police were on the scene in 2 minutes chrono.

I had a creep in a white pickup truck acting similar to me out in the backcountry. Scariest night of my life. But in general, I agree with what you said about the city vs the backcountry. Animals don't scare me, people do.

Get a dash cam and a back camera that records behind you! This way you have something. License plate and the vehicle and maybe what they look like.

The truth of things nowadays is a single woman living anywhere isn't really "safe." Apartments, houses, RV's or Vanlife, tenting in quiet places or even living off-grid: even institutions of "safety," if you're a single female, there is bound to be someone who only wants to harass, frighten, or hurt you. You absolutely did the right thing, Emmie. Don't let assholes get you down.
Yeah even assaults at parks and gyms are getting bad, you're not really safe anywhere.

I had a similar issue years ago. A guy followed me all around town, and I didn't want him to see where I lived. So I pulled into the local cops garage. While They talked to him, I went home!

Momma was a cop. She taught me to always go to Police Station. Don’t need to go in. Just park. Once it was really bad so I went to the back doors where cruisers pull in & layed (laid🤔) on horn. Cops got him! He had rap sheet for rapes, assaults. I was 17 & looked like Pam Anderson. I’m so happy to be old, gray & invisible now. Anyhoo, always feel safer in back country. Far away from males (I know there’s awesome ones, too!) Stay safe! I have a feeling if an attacker came your way & had a bagel kitty would give you up in a heartbeat ❤

Emi, I always meant to ask if you've ever had any scary experiences. Well here's my answer. I would have been frozen with fear. But you did exactly what I thought about doing. No mistaking this issue he in fact was stalking you. I'm sorry that happened to you,. Stay safe. Did Kelly sense something wrong? I bet she did.
Your decals advertise that you are a female in a van, possibly traveling alone. You may want to think about removing them. I was told by a police officer that there are things that predictors look for, to identify vehicles that belong to women (personalized plates, stickers and interior decorations, etc.). These things can make you a potential target. Just something to consider.
I would install stickers on your van that say 'Smile, you're on camera'! Giving the clear message whoever approaches your van IS being filmed. And yes, add the rear, sides and front camera's with motion lights.

And yes, as others have said here, please be sure to remove the signage from the outside of your van so you can miminimize how recognizable your van is. I'm so sorry you were treated this way.
I experienced that same harassment from a white van and they were honking at me and would park with their high beams shining in my van. That was a very scary night.

I'm just glad she remained in the van alot of times guys try to get you out to attack you, it can get pretty scary the level of harassment and stalking

If you don't call the police in a situation like that, perhaps driving straight to the nearest police station is an option.
I was harrassed by two guys on a 45 minute drive home from work one time. (Before cell phones) Finally reached a town and went straight to the police station. Those two turned around and hurried back out of town when they realized where I was going.
Yes I had to do that once too. But it was an ex boyfriend. Very scary.
Omg that was creeping like they say always follow your intuition. That is one reason Van Life CZcamsrs don't disclose their location when filming or wait until after they film and then relocate. You did the right thing by moving to the next town and making sure you were not followed. Well done Emi!
You to please get an app on your phone that you scan to make sure somebody didn't put a tagging device on your van. The apps are free and you can scan it periodically to make sure that no one has targeted your van. I would have called the police immediately because if he is going to harass you he is going to try to harass another woman and we have to get these people identified
Yes the police where suggesting that in my town about the app to check for tagging device. They had people doing this when a woman would go into the store and they would just walk by and stick it on. Thank you for posting that.

I always watch all day what type of vehicles are around me, you never know if they are watching during the day and follow like this at night.

I hear you it happened to me last week three men in a vehicle one came out I yelled back if you get closer you won’t be able to make it back to your vehicle then I flash my big light on him and then I said you’re only gonna get one warning he got back in the vehicle they honked a few times flashed on high beams and left
I'm of the opinion it's just not as safe now as it once was. That person could just have been getting his jollies harassing you, but they could also have been dangerous people with evil intentions. Be cautious, and stay safe.

Hornet spray carried in your cup holder always within your reach for self-defense . I'm 71 year's old I've used hornet spray many times giving me the opportunity to run . I started traveling across America/Canada / Mexico at a very young age back then majority of people were helpful and friendly. I always use to camp openly even traveling by motorcycle not so much in today's world.
Yes, and the good thing about hornet spray is that it IS LEGAL, even across borders., whereas mace and bear sprays often are not legal.

Put outside cameras on all four sides of your van, also get those motion lights on all four sides. I would not go to the back country yet. Park around town for a few more nights ansd see if it happens again. Take your stickers off your van. I hope you have some protection in your van. Get a very bright, blinding flashlight and shine it back into the drivers eyes if it happens again. If this person is trying to get away from the bright light you might be able to get their license plate and a photo of the truck. Emi you are so used to nothing happening. Does not mean this will happen again, but please be extra cautious for a while. Might just have been a weirdo, might be someone drunk. Give it a day or two to see if someone is stalking you. Please be very careful. If need be contact the police. Especially in the day. Could be watching you and you miss it. Hopefully its just a one time thing. I have been stalked before. Be very, very careful for awhile. God Bless.

Unfortunately it could very well be a subscriber that’s become obsessed with you. Happened to know your van and was trying to lure you out. Stay safe.
I hope that when you post where you are going is delayed. Another word, you are already gone from that area. Some van lifers have some kind of tent on window and windshield that make it harder to break in to. Put extra security locks on your doors. Have something for protection. Know your area, just in case you have to call the police. You did the right thing by moving. Be Safe!
Same sort of thing happened to me in Cowichin Bay harbour. A bunch of guys in a truck did a burn out throwing stones at my van and doin donuts within inches of me. I was terrified. They chased me all the way to Duncan. Those back roads are pitch black at night. Never went back to Cowichen Bay again. While I was in Duncan some people surrounded my van and keyed it from one end to the other and stabbed my tire with a knife. I was inside and frozen in fear. Be vigilant always.
I had problems there last year. A man was standing beside my van at 3am.
So sorry you have to put up with ignorant people. Most likely they know you are a single woman, alone in the van. You might want to take the sticker of ' Cat Lady' off the van???
Get a security alarm that you can trigger from inside the car. The noise most likely will scare anyone off....then drive straight to the police station. I don't know what the gun laws are in Canada, but as a single woman, you might consider getting one. Anyone else have some ideas to keep Emi safe!

Removing "Cat Lady" off the van is a very good suggestion
What about getting decals you can change out that are visible from all sides of your van...don't show any of them on your channel! This will put some doubt in anyone's head about who you are.

Next time park between two vans so it will be difficult to block you and you will have the presence of two vans in case of problems. You will then only have to honk your horn. The occupants of the two vans will get out and the guy or woman will run away.
Had the right idea...if your being harassed or followed, drive to the nearest police station. Also document the occurrence, date, time, and any description you can get of the vehicle and/or occupant...license plate, color, make and model etc. Glad you and Miss Kitty are ok!

I'm glad you were okay. I wonder if he was trying to see inside to see if he wanted to break in. Maybe wondered if the cargo was expensive. Going to a police station when being followeed is a good move any time. I've used that one in the day light in my car.
If this was a true predator, they wouldn't have acted that way. They would have gone in incognito as a likely scenario. This individual or individuals wanted to scare you and make your heart race. They could have been casing the joint to maybe steal vehicle and or steal contents. I bet if they realized no one was home, they would have broke in. Glad you left. Getting harassed like that, I am so sorry.

Had a similar thing happen to me. Thankfully I did a quick walk around my vehicle. They had put roofing tacks (nails) in front of my tires. Some people are just inconsiderate and cruel. I’am happy you and kitty are ok.

This is why you have your vehicle! Leave you don't watch for that long but luckily nothing happened and he was probably looking to break in or steal it. Something could've happened while you were thinking what to do and always go with your gut! Remember once you have a CZcams channel you put yourself out there for craziness! Not cool, Emi. Not cool!! I think I recognize that white pickup. He parks there frequently when I've been there, assuming it's the same guy. If it is him, I'm not very happy about what he did to you. I'd say he targeted you deliberately. I have talked to him before, so I may approach him and mention that someone harassed my friend and if it ever happens again I'll be doing something about it. That's not acceptable behaviour from anyone. I don't care who they are.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, Emi. There are strange individuals out there. Not too long ago, my sister had something similar happen to her and this was during the day. Luckily, she called us. She seeked refuge in a big box store and told the employees/manager. In which, the police were contacted. I tell her constantly to be aware of her surroundings. Possibly, get a dash camera? Take care & be safe out there! ❤

The pickup truck driver was definitely being a threatening a-hole. I attended a training once where the instructor gave really controversial advice- “NEVER go with an attacker”. Resist where the attacker is most uncomfortable. The attacker wants to take you somewhere that he feels safe and secure to do whatever he wants. I wouldn’t have known whether to stay or go. I’m glad you did. As bad as it was, the driver was afraid to do more in such a public place. It’s also hard to guess whether you were his target or if he was trying to scare you away.
Sometimes people don't have the choice of NEVER going with the attacker. Not very sound advice. They weren't trying to grab her. Driving to police department is the best idea if you are in your vehicle.

I've had similar jerks follow and even chase me. I've took a special high speed driving class and let's just say...it didn't end well for them. The last one that chase me lost control of his truck and rolled over off to the side of the road. I just called the police to go check on them for safety check. I'm not sure a high top van could make those kinds of turns safely. It's a good idea to take special driving classes and well worth the money.
I hope you have some type of defense and if you don't please consider some option. Also when in trouble drive to the nearest police station or to the nearest gas station! Gas stations has plenty of cameras and plenty of lights and traffic.! Also note down the license plate ..next time that plate comes around ..notify the police! Be safe!!!

The best thing to do with that situation is to remove yourself from the situation, although it’s also best to imply that more than one person in your vehicle this can be done by using remote switches to turn lights on a different areas of the van. Once you’re removed from the situation, then I would call RCMP or local LEO’s and report it. Luckily you do have cameras.
Men have been harrassing women since the dawn of time. As women we need to be watchful and vigilant. Always trust your insticts. I'm proud of you Emmie for using your head and getting out of the area.

So scary. I watched another video where that happened to lady who was living in her Jeep. She was in the wilderness. The guy followed her and tried to run her off the road and actually hit her car. Trying to make me lose control I guess. She drove into town and parked in front of the fire station.
