Building A 1" Scale Former ATSF Business Car Part 2

  • Hello everyone in this video I’ve changed things up from the part 1 video which was titled, Building a 1” Santa Fe 10-6 sleeper. Though the titles are different between parts 1 and 2, its still the same car that's now being constructed differently than originally planned.
    Instead of making a regular sleeper, I decided to go in the direction of making this a business car. It will either be constructed as a present day, BNSF business car, or it will be constructed as a Santa Fe business car represented in the early to mid 90s prior to the BNSF merger.
    Come along, as I explain and show you how I’ve built various components of the car, and how I have made tremendous progress, despite even sharing with you some mistakes that I’ve made.

    "It's a LOT of work..." Yep, that's hobbies for you! I really like your analog approach to this. I'm always impressed at methods of construction that aren't just injection molding. Joe Fischer's card and paper O scale passenger cars come to mind, and all the old Model Railroader "Dollar [x] car" articles. I'm working on the "Dollar Caboose" from a '50s article in MR, and it's a challenge!

      Yes it is! I appreciate the fact that you’re one of the people that realize that as opposed to a few who think that it’s as easy as folding together a paper airplane, lol!
      When I initially started doing this stuff out of wood, it was just a novelty idea. However, as I’ve done more and more of these, I realize that this is a real avenue for me. I actually thought that I would be doing a little work with model railroader since I had spoken with one of their editors who seemed interested. However, after they blew me off, it just opened up the avenue for me to share my work on my own terms. 😊

    You can't please everybody, which I guess you already know. I haven't found the music intrusive at all; and it's quite pleasing at times - especially 70's/80's era sounding music (a personal bias of course)
    On a side note, we're getting similar temperatures here in London UK recently, definitely icy, but we rarely get snow! Anyway, I don't modal at all, but love watching those who have mastered the craft; glad I stumbled upon your channel.

      Welcome to the war, Bond channel, and thank you very much for some ideas of other music formats that I can introduce. I too am a product of the 70s and 80s! 😊
      I appreciate your interest in the channel, and while there are a number of things I can’t do, it’s always fun to live vicariously through those who can do the things that we cannot. 😁

    I was in the middle of typing the track geometry car when you made the suggestion! NS has converted an old heavyweight private car, the “Bellfleur” as a modern geo car. It doesn’t need to be stainless you know, unless you are sticking to ATSF proto. Keep it coming!
    Nothing wrong with Bondo filler, but use clamps when you glue anything!
    Use fewer roof arcs, notch them, lay full length strings in the notches, glue them in place. Lay the roof over that framing using thin metal or glue soak cloth. It’s lighter and functional.

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci

      I did look at the NS Car for a split second, but since I am a Santa Fe guy, I chose to stick with the stainless steel version. However, also being a former CNW employee, I thought initially about building a car to commemorate my roots, but this project goes in the direction that fits with my Santa Fe theme

      Consider staggering the roof ribs and notching them out to hold full-length support beams. Use thin sheet aluminum as the roofing material. The car will be lighter and the roof a single removable piece. Trust me!@@warbonds

      I had never thought about that, but as I have said many times, it’s great to hear suggestions from my followers because it gives me a better way, and doing things and some cases. I always say that I don’t do things alone because we all get our ideas from other people or the trial and error That we go through. 😁

    Hi Eric, I have been enjoying your content for a few weeks now. It seems that you have shown people an easy way to enter 1" scale! My question is, have you considered using a CNC machine/router to cut out some of the parts used in your projects? I know woodworking is an art unto itself, but CNC will help improve consistency. Either way, keep up the great work, and I'm itching to see the completed GP60M!

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I knew I would get suggestions that probably would’ve made this work a lot easier and less frustrating, but things wouldn’t be quite so much fun if I took the easy way out, lol!
      The crazy thing is that I do have a router table, but didn’t think about employing it to accomplish this work. At least, if I do another car at some point, I will be able to use better methods. I certainly appreciate you being one of a couple of kind people to mention this to me. I certainly appreciate the encouragement! 😊

    For people asking why you use music. Because it is your videos, your projects, and that is what you want to do.
    I will ask, have you considered using a router and flush trim bit for the roof pieces? Once you have one done it can be used as a template for the ninety-nine others.
    Are you doing fluting on the sides? I look forward to seeing more. Great Work!

    Hi Eric, this is going to be awesome looking, you're doing a great job. Something to consider if you do more of these type roofs. A router table and a template would make this process go so much faster. Your template along with a roughed out piece would follow a bearing guided router bite. Just a thought to help you knock these out . Take care.

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci

      You are the first of about three people who have suggested that, and the crazy thing is that I do have a router table. I guess I will know better for next time, but I do appreciate your kind words and interest in the channel. 😊

    I did notice an anti-music post that was needlessly harsh. You didn't need that noise. I wish I spoke up but I didn't want to make more noise with a harsh reply. That said I often find it hard to make out what people on CZcams say when they have music.
    Big budget shows put a lot of work into having music and dialogue work well at the same time, and they usually have subtitles. That said, this episode went pretty well.

      The concept is certainly the same, but there is still a little bit of variation. I’m still trying to decide if the roof is going to be attached to the body with the underframe being detachable or vice versa. I never say never when somebody is willing to share ideas.

    I don't mind the music, but sometimes, you do have it a little too loud where it can be hard to hear you. I would just try to work on balancing that out is all.

    Could you make a 1964 old passenger coach car

    • @warbonds
      @warbonds  Před 8 měsíci

      I have to be totally honest and tactful when I say this. There is a tremendous amount of work and money that goes into each of these projects. I started building this car based off of personal interest and a little bit of suggestion. Though people make plenty of suggestions, I don’t have the time and money to build everything that people ask me to build unless they are willing to pay. This current project will be in the thousands of dollars by the time I’m done, and for a willing buyer, I will make the time as best as I can to complete a commitment to any customer.
