- A video capture card is an input device for converting video signals to digital data that can be uploaded to the internet. It helps gamers, content creators, video production teams, and anyone capture and save their favorite footage for internet use. A video capture card and other accessories like HDMI, SDI, and USB cables make it possible to stream, capture, edit, and share the entire experience whether it's a game, live presentation or performance, business conference, or content creation.

If I'm not mistaken, my church media dept was able connect a PTZ camera directly to a iMac via USB and it was recognized as a video device in OBS. Is this because the PTZ has an in-built capture card that allows it to be seen as a device?
USB is the connection you need, either by directly connecting it to the computer or converting another video signal into USB from outputs like HDMI and SDI. This is where the HDMI to USB convertor comes into play.
ALl that's missing from this fine tutorial is advice on what video edit programs are compatible. Not all of us have OBS Studio. Some use ShotCut; some use Premiere Pro. Does either of those offer the ability to record the video stream being input?
Depends on the program, but if they are video streaming platforms, safe to assume that they have the ability to record the video stream.
What does it do? Can't I just record a video with my camera and then upload it to my computer? What does a capture card do? Is it just for live streaming? I still don't understand.
Hi, Yes, you can record with your camcorder since it probably has an SD or USB port for recording data too. However, folks using Pan, Tilt and Zoom live streaming cameras typically do not have these Hardware Drive ports as an option with Live Streaming PTZ cameras. So, to record video you will need to send the live stream to a computer that has Video Streaming Software via a convertor/capture device using a USB connection. As well, many live streams are using more than one camera, feeding all video to a switch or a couple of capture devices to switch camera angles. This cannot be accomplished with a USB drive or SD card that has been recorded on. Hope this helps! Thanks for the question!
@@BZBTVchannel I still don't understand. All I have is my camera on my android phone and the Kinemaster video editing app.
@@BibleNutter Hi, this is a Pan, Tilt and Zoom camera that is mounted to a fixed location with optical zooms up to 75 feet away. Most folks will set up multiple cameras for broadcasting using a Video Switcher, Joystick controller and will incorporate an Audio Mixer in conjunction for the live stream show. PTZ cameras are use by folks looking to take their broadcast to the next level, beyond a simple hand held phones capability.

So you use this on a computer and connect it to a camera it becomes a web cam, and to edit etc you can do away with video editing software and use this instead?
Hi Keith, this device takes a "Source" AKA Camera with HDMI, Game System or Camcorder with HDMI output and converts the HDMI signal into a USB signal so you can capture the video and use a Software program to edit and record on. So you do still need a Software program of some sort. OBS Studios is free to download and works fine!
Can I use one of these with a camera like you are using for the demonstration to live stream to Facebook??
Hi Sara, yes, this device will convert your HDMI signal into a USB3.0 signal so you can stream by selecting the camera when making a video on CZcams or Facebook. What type of camera do you have?
I want to connect a gaming console (a Switch, which has an HDMI output) to my laptop (which also has an HDMI output) in order to use my laptop like a monitor, but not necessarily record or stream anything. Will a capture card function as an HDMI input so that I can project an external device onto my laptop?
Edit: if I can, is there a specific type of capture card I should use? Can you recommend me any? Because I'm extremely confused by the whole process and I doubt I'll be able to find the right device on my own
Hi Gabe, the capture card will indeed allow you to bring the signal into a computer but it's not exactly the same as a monitor. You will have to open the USB feed in a video player on your computer which could introduce latency. This would cause a lag from your control input to what you see displayed on screen. It will work in theory, but your mileage may vary based on the capabilities of your computer and the software you use to view with.
Does the HDMI BZB Capture Card actually have a USB 3.0 OUTPUT? I have no HDMI input on my computer so I MUST have a capture card that has a USB output.

So I plan to get a webcam as well as a USB mic to record videos for youtube. I have downloaded OBS to my macbook. Do I need a capture card in order to record my audio and footage? and what is the benefit of using the capture card rather than directly plugging my mic and webcam into my macbook and recording using the OBS app?
Hi Lazy Creative,
You don't need a capture card, and there is no benefit, if your device has native USB.
@@BZBTVchannel Awesome, thank you!
@@courtneymayoshow Capture cards are generally used for devices that do not have an option for self recording (Wii, xbox 360, ps3) Newer generation consoles have these options but to have a higher quality stream or recording, its better to record remotely via capture card...Correct me if I'm wrong :)

Hi, Unfortunately, no. HDMI was developed to put an end to recording movies that are copyrighted so you cannot record them from an HDMI output. You can record a camera image or video game though.

Could this be used to replicate multi-cam simultaneous streaming like Critical Role?
Hi Adam, any time you have multiple cameras and are using a Capture Device you will need a Hardware Production Switcher before the Capture Device for choosing which camera is being streamed or viewed. This device does not do any type of replicating, it just converts HDMI or SDI video to USB for video capturing used by software programs.

Nice video. Can I use this to record whatever is showing on my smart TV? Asking because there's time I have to work late at night and I miss certain shows and sport games
Hi, no, unfortunately, any movies or TV shows are copyright protected and HDMI prevents this type of recording. You can record Video Games and Video Camera footage though.

So it means no matter what my camera is able to shoot. Be it 1080p or 4k I will still need to use a capture card to plug in to the laptop/pc in order to have a htmi input from my camera?
Hi John, if you want any HDMI signal to work with your computer as a video input source, you will need to convert that HDMI signal to a USB signal since PC's and MAC's do not offer HDMI Inputs, only outputs. This is the only way other than adding a special HDMI PC card that attaches to the motherboard.

If I wanted to record footage from a device that outputs video via component cables, could I not just get a component to HDMI adaptor and connect that to my laptops HDMI port, and record that with OBS? If not, why is a capture card necessary?
Hi, many people ask this question, but the simple answer is there is no HDMI input on a computer, only an Output. Other option is to install a PC capture Card for desktop computers.

Will it take a input from a hdmi device and a microphone and output both to the hdmi output to a standard Samsung tv ?
If the HDMI device and mic are separate, no it will not. If the audio is coming from the HDMI device, you'll be fine.
Hello! I would like to know if a capture card is necessary for a single pc and if it will impact my gameplay or not. Thank you!
Hello, what are you trying to do with it? A capture device converts a HDMI signal to USB 3.0 so you can record on your computer. The only thing that would use Processing Speed is the Program you choose to record with. SO, find the least intensive software for recording video. Maybe VLC player would work!

Hello, devices vary as it pertains to there HDMI output amplification. Where one device may support the 50ft HDMI limitations, another device like a Video Switcher meant for a Rack may only support a distance of up to 25ft. Other than DVD players most devices are designed for shorter cable runs, typically under 25ft. Its our experience anything over 20ft may have signal issues. Another factor is the quality of the HDMI cable being installed. If you need to extend your signal you should consider an HDMI extender or Active HDMI cable designed for long distance runs.

ordinarily you would need a PC or laptop to connect a capture card to so that you can stream the source through a broadcasting software like OBS. That being said, we also offer solutions like our BG-HAVS which will stream directly from the capture card without the need of a computer.
This can be used for screen recording TV gameplays as well right?
Hey Stone Cold, Yes. You can connect your game system to the capture card, HDMI from the game system to the capture card. Then use the HDMI loop output on the capture card to the display.
