  • 20th Century Fox World Dubai would have contained a wealth of attractions from incredibly popular franchises, from The Simpsons to Alien and even one of the most adult franchises ever to be included in a theme park

The fact that they didn’t build the 20th century Fox building from actual movie intros is criminal.
Think about it, you watch a Disney movie and it starts with the Disney castle logo, you go to Disney world and see the Castle. Now you go see a fox movie, see the 20th century Fox logo at the start, the go to its park and see a weird spiky spire thing... YOU GUYS COULD HAVE HAD IT!!

In theory, with Dubai placing itself as a nexus travel point between Asia and Europe, it makes sense that Dubai would want to venture into tourism attractions.
The problem as i see it is, the projects over extend themselves in scale, Orlando was built over decades, not in a few years. Even Tokyo and Shanghai only have 1-2 premiere parks.
Secondly, the weather limits what you can do in an outdoor park, the sweltering heat in the summer is brutal in a place like Dubai. Having an indoor park adds addition overhead costs and limits your scale.
Thirdly, this is a thing I’ve seen in the Gulf for decades. They will spend an inaordinate amount of money upfront with no maintenance follow through. This will not be like Japan or Hong Kong where the parks are taken care for years and years.
IMG World in Dubai has for a long time shown wear and tear, and MotionGate - with all due respect - is like a Universal Park on a budget. These are not Disney/Universal caliber parks.
As far as parks go, I think Abu Dhabi has done it best with their smaller more focused efforts with Ferrari World and WB World. Both of which are smaller indoor parks.
I still think WB World Abu Dhabi still is by far the best park experience in the Middle East.
The thing i don’t like about Dubai, is unless you like shopping malls, there isn’t much to do if your a middle class earner. Almost all the major tourist attractions/places are really geared towards the wealthy. And I’ve said for years “there are only so many billionaires on Earth, and they have so many more options then here (Dubai)”

The problem with those kinds of parks is that they DEPEND TOO MUCH ON FOREIGN TOURISM IN A CONFLICTING AREA OF THE PLANET (and that was before COVID).

The monarchy across all the emirates are forever trying to reform their well-earned terrible image by throwing oil money at ridiculous projects.
They might instead try eliminating slave labor and torture, repealing their medieval anti-homosexuality laws, upholding women’s rights, working on their obscene wealth disparity, prosecuting the criminal members of their monarchy (search “Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan” if you want to make yourself vomit), bringing true democratic reform to their ostensibly elective constitutional government, and respecting the human rights of all the UAE’s residents, for starters.
This was once the cradle of world civilization after all, during the Golden Age of Islam: lens-crafting, astronomy, eye surgery, higher maths, navigation, and in fact pluralism and tolerance as concepts (protecting Jewish people and other religious minorities at a time when Christian Rome was actively persecuting them, for instance) all trace back to this broad area ca. the 8th through 14th centuries AD.
What an embarrassing medieval backwater they’ve become now instead, building theme parks as a charm offensive at the same time as they silence journalists and “disappear” human rights activists.
Maybe there are some real reformers in the UAE, maybe even in Dubai particularly. I sure hope so. But they need to work faster and harder.
They must use that massive sovereign wealth fund to reform their criminal courts, reduce wealth disparity, and create ironclad respect for the human rights of all their residents equally.

theme parks are destined to fail in most of the Middle East because they have such strict religious laws that are completely alien to most Western franchises - the cultural difference is just too great, even the idea of going out to a theme park is in itself alien to many in those parts: every Western franchise has multiple topics they'd have to remove (drinking, gambling, "risky" comedy, wrong clothes etc etc).

Yeah… Dubai’s tourism potential is probably impacted (at least, it should be impacted, in a just world it would be impacted) by the UAE’s overall appalling record on human rights. It’d be hard to visit a theme park knowing it was *_built with actual human slave labor_* and that, not far from the park, single pregnant women are *_being hanged or beheaded_* after their wealthy married lovers in the monarchy accuse them of witchcraft. 🤢
