I actually have a difficult time with people disagreeing with this fact. Having been to 281 amusement parks in 20 countries, it’s a no-brainer, and my opinion, that Tokyo DisneySea is the greatest amusement park in the world. Been there 5x, and each time I have gone, the same thought occurs - “I can’t believe this is a Disney Park!” No, it doesn’t have the most intense rides, but the overall experience is second to none!! As the parks expands, I expect the same exceptional standards will continue.

The imagineers said quite clearly in the Disney Channel documentary that the reason Disney Sea was so successful is because money was no object. Tokyo has been the most immersive park by far and the cast members the most memorable and friendly. I only hope that the parks owned by Disney do not fall back to the days of failing parks, where money overrides the experience. It’s the experience over all that really captures people imagination and leads to the success or failure of a park. In order from best to least favourite I would say Tokyo, California, Orlando then Paris. And we had a really good vacation from the uk to Tokyo on a fraction of the cost of disneyworld. Just saying.

The Japanese have long been one of the biggest tourist groups to Disneyland. In the early years, they just loved to come there when visiting SoCal. Thus the reason for building TD. The Oriental Land Company has always been willing to shell out money for the long term gain. They also get a 5 year exclusivity for any attraction they help to build. That is why you won’t be seeing Beauty and the Beast at another park anytime soon. TDS is the best example of how a theme park should be built and managed.

In a way, the success of TokyoDisney pretty much created the management / ownership style of Disneyland Paris. Since TWDC saw how much money they lost to OLC, which only had to pay license fees and some percentage of souvenirs sold, Disney decided they wanted to be more involved with Disneyland Paris and basically get as much of the profits as possible.

    • @EspenSGX
      @EspenSGX Před 3 lety

@@Brandis13 That doesn't compute. Disney at a certain point didn't own most of Disneyland Paris, it was a separate company that was traded on the stock exchange. Only now Disney fully owns Disneyland Paris. Sure, Disney got money from royalties and what not, but no profit from the park itself. If it even did make profit to begin with. (The ins and outs of all this is way more complex, but who wants to read an economic essay about it from me?)
Regarding management. Whoa, did they miss the mark on that if they hoped for a Tokyo Disney style management! Currently Disney is still working at catching up with delayed maintenance. A staggering example is the Mark Twain boat. Originally there were two boats making their rounds around Big Thunder Mountain, at some point it only became the Molly Brown. The Mark Twain was left rotting and is a husk!

@@EspenSGX Don't tell me, I was a shareholder of Euro Disney! At the time EuroDisneyland was built, there was a law in place that no foreign company could own more than 49% of any french company. So that was the amount they owned directly. But indirectly, there were many companies and subcompanies TWDC owned more interests in, so all in all, they still owned the majority of EuroDisney. Their biggest mistake probably was that at the begin of the 90's, there was big money to be made by property speculation and Disney invested on a huge business campus within the boundaries of the EuroDisney resort and just when the whole area was ready to open, that speculation bubble burst in France and they lost tons of money on that. Together with that, they had arranged for much higher royalties than they ever got from the OLC. Since the park constantly lost money, they had to start waiving their royalties, to keep the company afloat and once the european banks didn't want to invest more money, they even provided loans.
In later years it seems french laws on ownership of french companies by foreign entities changed, since TWDC companies started to higer stakes until in the end they took over the whole company, which makes me an ex-shareholder now.:-) The good thing is, I'm still a member of the EuroDisney (former) shareholders club and get pretty good discounts on admission, hotels and merchandise and they still invite us to attraction previews.
For reference: Euro Disney S.C.A. was the holding company of the Group and was the listed company. The main asset of the Company was its investment in 82% of the share capital of its subsidiary, Euro Disney Associés S.C.A. (“EDA”). The general partner of Euro Disney S.C.A. was EDL Participations S.A.S., a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) and the gérant of Euro Disney S.C.A. was Euro Disney S.A.S., which was also a subsidiary of the TWDC. And there were many more subsidiaries within those. Really a fun read :-)

@@mushieslushie I thought Soarin' was integrated pretty well in terms of the setting. A member of S.E.A. who invented a new flying machine that we all got to experience is as good as it gets when it comes to integrated storytelling. The new area has me concerned but I'm hopeful they'll at least stay with port theme because tangled and frozen both take place in port cities while Neverland could be like the existing Port Discovery, fictional but still keeping with the theme of journeying to different ports and islands.

Disney was planning to build Disney Sea in California, U.S at the first time. But being under pressure of cutting their budget and environmental issues, Disney decided to give it to Tokyo. They shipped all the equipment from the U.S to Japan and everything was designed by the imaginners of Disney mainland in the U.S. Thus, TokyoDisney Sea is Disney themepark without getting any budget assessment by the Disney mainland in the U.S.

As a matter of fact, the Tokyo Disney experience surpasses anything I’ve experienced in the US parks. It’s worth the trip to Japan to go. Ironically, Tokyo Disney is not owned and operated by Disney corporate, the Oriental Land Company licenses the IP. Coincidence…. I think not.

Putting this out there, I've heard a rumor (which really should be taken with a grain of salt) that Disney plans to make a Disney Sea at Walt Disney World with the only a couple of notable alterations to the original park that being it will be the biggest park in Disney History (600 acres compared to DS' 121 acres). In addition to recreating many of DS' many iconic elements due to how large the park is planned to be new areas that are yet to be added in DS are ones like Kumandra, The Island of Prospero and be based on plays by William Shakespeare.
This would also include Mount Prometheus being made at about 199.5 feet tall (same height as Everest over in Animal Kingdom) plus the return of Storm Rider, an expanded Port Discovery which would include more H.G. Wells based rides (along with a return of TimeKeeper located between Mysterious Island and Port Discovery (the ride did include both authors)). A River Rapids in Kumandra (supposedly based on the story on how Raya stole Fang's Dragon Scroll) and also include an area based on the MCU or alter American Waterfront into an MCU version of New York (though personally I would prefer both an MCU area and American Waterfront instead of just getting one or the other (600 acres we have room for both)).
The rumor also said that there would also be an area based on Amphibia from the show... um Amphibia along with one based on the Boiling Isles from The Owl House though even the source of the rumor said to take this with a grain of salt. Also the Tower of Terror of DisneySea was apparently going to be replaced with the Eyrie Building from Disney's Gargoyles which would based more on Rise of the Resistance from Galaxy's Edge.
From what I heard the park would be located in the space located to the West of Epcot and South of Magic Kingdom and will likely be announced a year or so from now.
For anyone who wants to know this was posted in a since deleted video on DisneySea from someone who talked to a cast-member at Epcot who heard from a friend of a friend of someone who heard Disney's CEO talking about a new park. And again, even this person said to take this with a grain of salt. Though I have to admit if true, and let's be honest that's a BIG if, this would likely be a park that would be universally welcomed by fans and casual park goers as DisneySea in Disney World would be something that just about everyone could get behind.
I for one hope this is true and would love to hear ReviewTyme's thoughts on this. If anything I hope this rumor spreads like wildfire and Disney goes, "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea."

There is an aspect that should not be forgotten. When OLC was doing research for building 'some' theme park on their lands, is was going to be a ... city theme park. NOT remote like all others ! It fits into the metropolis itself, and is accessible through the existing train and underground connections. Lets face the fact: it's ony 12 km away from the centre of Tokyo, such as Tokyo central station.
From the beginning, the park served not just as a day destination, but as well as an evening party destination. However, Disneyland may be well designed, but does not contribute fully to the needs of "romantic partying". It does not offer privacy...
DisneySea was designed completely with that purpose in mind. When you are a local, you go there, again and again, to feel being in the most romantic 'other world' possible. Even if you do not go on any ride. That's why the 'Fort exploration' is no thrill and all mood, bathed in a luxury setting with no shopping around at all. That's why there are countless street and stairs, leading to cozy corners to sit down an eventually doing cosplay (lol), but not leading to any attraction ride at all.
DisneySea is the most powerfull.... marriage location in Tokyo (and Japan). Amazing reality. Go there for romantic feelings, to meet you lover, to play cosplay indeed (when parties of teenage youngsters). Or, to wait for the sunset.
There is no theme park in the world which is offering THAT in the way DisneySea does. And, yes, it's a classic Japanese thing, because people go to temple gardens for the same reasons. And there exist several more theme parks in Japan which cater for romanticism in the first place. (Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo : 'travel to Holland' theme. , Shima Spain Village : 'travel to Spain' , ... Well, OK apart from DisneySea, in total there are 11 parks listed in Japan with a romantic travel theme :
    1. Canadian World (Hokkaido)
    2. Spa Resort Hawaiians(Fukushima)
    3. Tokyo German Village(Chiba)
    4. Tobu World Square (Tochigi)
    5. Asian Old Bazaar (Tochigi)
    6. Rock Heart Castle (Gunma)
    7. Little World (Aichi)
    8. Shima Spain Village (Mie)
    9. Porto Europe (Wakayama)
    10. Huis Ten Bosch (Nagasaki)
    11. Arita porcelain park(Saga)
In other words, when going for building the new park, OLC was actually looking into creating the most fantastic detailed ROMANTIC visits park in Japan. The tradition is hundreds of yeas old, and you can convince Japanese customers only by creating the best, with "hideaway corners for every party".
And, observe ... most Japanese visitors to DisneySea dress up as if going to a reception party ! No tourist dress !!
All this is the essence of the park !
    Cheers

HKDL was on a small budget that didn't even include Small World (added years later) DCA (well it was a "glorified" Six Flags) Opps! Did I say that?!???
