Rule 195 in the Highway Code states that:
you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
You are legally required to stop at a zebra crossing once a pedestrian has moved on to the crossing, however, you’re not required to stop until the pedestrian has moved on to the crossing.
@@liamdell7356 for now (I’m sure it’s changing soon) but it was always a stupid rule as you literally have to step out into the traffic to make it stop :)

Always amazes me how many people overtake because they’re in a hurry, but always have time to slow down and stop when in front to make a point.
Was going to say the same! Love how they tailgate and make a fuss, then slow to a crawl when they overtake ... they're actually further behind than what they would have been...
And in most cases the person who got overtooken catch up to them 😂. This is why you there's no point driving like a knob to get somewhere

Funny thing is, if he HAD stopped for the people at the zebra crossing, the white car would have been able to turn into the side road whilst he was stopped, and the grey car would have then been able to turn out of the side road, and there would have been zero conflict.
It's almost as if Matt was so desperate to try and score imaginary road captain points that he forgot to follow the rules of the road himself...

Few years back was coming down a steep hill i was sliding as its not a gritted route. This woman starts driving up the hill at me when im over half way already no sense of lets let the car coming down the snowy hill pass before i drive up. I was lucky i managed to find grip pull in a gap because we would have hit as she had no intention of waiting 10 seconds.

Not sure if you are aware, but it's optional to stop unless they have stepped onto the crossing. If you are waiting to cross put one foot in the road, then technically people have to stop. Although they still might not. The crossing in the video had an island which makes each side as separate crossing. Crossing one side doesnt mean traffic have to automatically stop on the other. You have to wait again when in the middle.

I don't know why it does, considering it happens multiple times a week in these compilations, but it still shocks me that people's first instinct when they see a hazard isn't to brake, it's to sound their horn and then in a lot of cases only bother to start braking when it's too late and they're already guaranteed to have a collision

My instincts are the complete opposite, i brake or manoeuvre first and then i'll sometimes remember to use my horn but 99% of the time i don't think of it or it's too late/pointless as i've already avoided the hazard. I think i've used my horn once in all the time i've been driving and that was to alert a car reversing out of a space that i was behind them as i couldn't move due to cars being in front and behind me.
@@ChrisTrackninja yep, i've said it many times, too many people only care about what they legally have to do/are allowed to do, rather than just doing what would make everyone's lives easier, so rather than slowing down and making way for the idiot doing whatever they're doing, they'd rather just carry on as they are and either have or nearly have an accident because "technically i was in the right, so i shouldn't have to slow down for the other person when they were the one doing the illegal thing"

Not 100% sure it was a brake check. There was a car in the road turning right which the overtaking car would have seen before Justin.
overtake was fine based on what you can see from the camera. Pisses me off when drivers just refuse to be overtaken without causing a fuss, share the road fgs
@@bobmartin9905 good eye! I didn't see that first time around. The overtaking car definitely slowed down quickly though, before you could see the car turning right around the corner, which they then stopped for.

You dont have to give way unless they have stepped onto the crossing. It had an island which makes it two seperate crossings. Technically he didnt have to stop, but it is nice to do so.
Unfortunately it’s only morally wrong legally he didn’t do anything wrong, with zebra crossings you only have to stop if a pedestrian is actually on the crossing it’s self, they are on an island so it’s legally two crossings.
Pedestrians need to look and make sure the vehicle approaching can safely stop before stepping onto the crossing, it’s no good just walking along and stepping out expecting a hgv or bus to stop.
@@scottlaaa agreed he does not legally have to stop but its a dangerous game at a zebra, if you step out with cars oncoming you run the risk of being knocked down, but legally you can step out to stop traffic but you also could be there for weeks as cars whizz by because you need to wait until they have stopped. Guy just comes across so bad. Muted clip also makes me think he giving it both barrels.

5:52 "Wanker number two" may have startled you but it was the only possible thing for the cop to do. It's not like he was crossing into oncoming traffic, there is a lane's width of herring-bone. I imagine he subsequently stopped the car that pulled out.
That cop was speeding to catch someone. That's why they didn't brake and/slow down.
The cop should be fined for speeding and reckless driving without their emergency beacons/warning devices activated. Most cops do it, and they should be reprimanded for it. It's no different to you or I speeding, except they're preoccupied with the target.

The cop was speeding, the cop could've stopped, and the fact that they didn't stop/slow to ticket the car that pulled out in front of them illegally speaks volumes. They were (as is common practice with cops) speeding without their warning signals on, most likely to serve someone else with an infringement. If they _couldn't_ foresee and slow for that idiot, then they need to be re-evaluated for their license.

As long as the driver is trained to response/advanced driver standards, they can use legal exemptions without warning equipment as long as they can justify it. Used commonly with traffic cops to silently approach a vehicle or nearby incident.
If you don't have ANY context to a situation - don't judge an emergency vehicle on what it's doing, just keep it to yourself

@@GaffaTV It is absolutely the law that you must stop at a zebra crossing when someone is on it (Highway Code Rule 195). This one might be slightly muddied if it ended in court as the crossing is split in half by an island and therefore its possible to argue that once the pedestrians reach the centre island they are no longer on the crossing and must again step onto the second half for the legal protection. However its obvious to a blind man on a galloping horse that the two guys clearly intended to make the full crossing and that Matt is a twat. If you don't think its a legal requirement to stop at a zebra crossing with people on it i'll give you £100 to prove your hypothesis by driving through one with a police car behind you ;)

@@MKPSG12 when the law changes to "you must stop to allow pedestrians waiting to cross" then sure, but this topic has been heavily debated in other people's comments. It usually concluded with, "If the pedestrian put one foot in the road, then Matt would have needed to stop legally, but otherwise no."
And this junction is a common one for me in Liverpool's City Centre. I can't tell you how many times I've seen other people do it with a police car right behind them. Simply said, it's not worth their time to enforce like many other offences that seem to get brushed under the carpet.
Now the vast majority of people do stop even when they see people on the other side of the island and usually at this location, stopping means taking no more than 5 seconds out of your day. It's obviously the "right" thing to do even more so if you consider they are the more vulnerable road user.

It always amazes me that many people’s first instinct on seeing a potential hazard is to speed up/beep their horn because its their right of way as opposed to just chilling out and being the responsible one and slowing down 😂 If you expect people to do stupid shit, you have a lot less issues...

Those flexy bollards will actually push flush to the ground before they unroot. They will also pop back up again after the company pool car has moved off of them. Don't ask me how I know this.
Tesco's at Newton Abbot in Devon. There used to be three of those bollards around that curve. Two have already been demolished by poor drivers, and the red car was doing it's very best to see off the final one!

Pretty sure the police driver was going too quick. I'd love to know exactly where on the A650 that was so I could do a rough time/distance calculation as it took no more than 4.0 seconds for them to travel the distance between their headlights appear and drawing alongside the centre of the junction.

Plus the camera car and police car look a pretty similar distances away from the car that pulls out and they arrive in that spot at the same time. Doubt it was going as fast as you’re suggesting it was.

I'm aware of silent approaching, but that didn't seem like the kind of driving you'd use to sneak up on someone.

Considering most clips on here, I don't really see the problem. A vaguely risky overtake of a slow moving vehicle, just going onto the crosshatching? Yes it's not recommended, but hardly TOTW material
She didn't even do anything wrong. Her fella is probably one of those who think the car will explode if you touch the hatched markings. She overtook a slow moving vehicle whilst keeping within the speed limit, good overtake in my opinion.

That roundabout at 5:12 is always a nightmare during rush hour as its always a busy route into Edinburgh. You've got to be quick to get a space to enter the roundabout
Yep, I think I've barely been over it without someone basically pulling out in front of me - but can't really get annoyed as it's so busy you pretty much have to. As long as everyone just lets traffic flow it generally works OK!
@@Tricky898 I've usually waited for a while before I can find a gap but when I do I floor it as there's always another person doing the same. Plus a few times traffic stops on that roundabout

@Follow the howl No I fully understand. I always stop where it's obvious someone is intending to cross. "be ready to slow down or stop", doesn't mean you have to stop. Just like the rest of the highway code which doesn't specifically say "MUST", are just best practice guides. The pedestrians stopped, the only issue here was the car pulling out assuming cam car was going to stop, assumed wrong. Cam car did nothing wrong in this instance.

The first dude was the obvious idiot for doing what he did, but the police should be held to a higher standard not "the same" and actually what I've found from my own experiences is that the police are just as bad as anyone else on the road because it all comes down to the driver.
Sure, there's not much the camera car could have done - but if the police car collided with him, the police would be liable. Of course, they'd have reason for it (wanker number 1) but that then doesn't give any permission or allowance to damage something else, and they'd have to chase up wanker number 1 to hear the end of that one.
