I don't hate Scream 5 but Scream 6 will define whether I trust or don't trust the writers. Maybe Scream 5 didn't work as well because they were trying to mimic Wes Crave instead of doing their own thing. Hopefully Scream 6 will change that and it will be something different. We'll get to see a Radiosilence Scream. And I'D LOVE a cliffhanger.

Scream 2 just gets everything right for me. Character development, Storytelling, suspense, chase scenes, set pieces, soundtrack, character themes originality, originality. Just like the original Scream it's an iconic masterpiece and a lesson in how to make a perfect slasher sequel. The opening scene being in a busy movie theatre instead of the cliche ghostface call and attacks victim at their home opening scene is just beautiful. Take note.. you don't always need a Ghostface phone call to open a Scream movie with.

23:50 I first saw Jenna Ortega in season 2 of the show YOU, and then Scream 5, but yeah it's crazy how much stuff she's been in this year. (Especially in horror. She's becoming a new horror queen.)

Sam character is annoying as f. Yes she inspires that level of reaction in me . Jenna seems to carry their relationship/ scenes. It’s like that dig at Gale that without GF she’s scared that she could fade into oblivion. Same may be true of Sam/Tara dynamic.
Btw was I the only one that caught the shade throne at Neve, old school fans and possibly critics, throughout film? Or maybe it was my loyalty to Neve that made me overly sensitive?

  • @Joker_JAK
    @Joker_JAK Před rokem +11

Sam told Tara about Billy being her father because Richie said "Do you know why someone would attack your sister?" And so she felt like someone attacked Tara BECAUSE of Billy being her father.
Also, Sam wouldn't have necessarily returned to Woodsboro. In fact, if anything, it would purposely make her avoid Woodsboro. If she thinks a killer is targeting her (and therefore killed her sister) she would be dumb to return to Woodsboro. However, keeping Tara alive basically guarantees Sam's return. She would want to protect her sister. Besides, a funeral wouldn't happen right away anyway because their mother was out of town. So I definitely believe they purposely kept Tara alive. Even IF Sam would have returned if Tara had died, there was no guarantee for the reasons I already stated. So keeping Tara alive pretty much guarantees Sam returns.
Dewey wasn't inept in his death scene. Once he got the killer down, his goal was to get the others to safety. Once they were in the elevator, he knew he had to shoot the killer in the head or they'd came back. I don't think it was contrived at all. Makes perfect sense. As for looking at his phone, it wasn't a conscious choice. As Eddie said, the phone ringing made him turn his head on instinct and Ghostface jumped up a spilt second later. It wasn't like Dewey stared at his phone for 30 seconds before he was killed. It was almost instant. Personally, Dewey's death is my favorite death of the entire franchise. I thought it was a badass way to go out and Ghostface looked really cool in it. The death was brutal AND the lines of dialogue were awesome. And thank you, Zack, for saying Amber doesn't lift Dewey. I'm tired of hearing people say that.
The people who think Stu (or Dewey) is returning are just setting themselves up for disappointment. I've already seen people say they were pissed Stu wasn't the killer in Scream 5.
A movie could absolutely use a fictionalized version of Sidney. Do you think Team America World Police got permission from all of those actors? Or do you think those were real events that they were allowed to use? Family Guy and South Park depict real people all the time without their permission and without it being a real life scenario. And those are just SOME examples. There are many, many more.

Yeah, I was one of those that at first glance thought Amber lifted him, but when someone argued that she didn't and I actually went watched just that scene I admitted I was wrong. She doesn't lift him. It's how she stands and the camera lowers to give the esthetic, but she doesn't lift him.

The last two are trash. The Carpenter sisters are awful, though Chad and Mindy have potential.
The killers in 5 and 6 have been terrible with Richie and Amber being the worst.

    My ranking is 1,4,2,3,5
I like 4 cus it’s the first movie I was old enough(or even alive for) to see in theaters. And it’s the first time I actually was a fan of the actors and knew them. (Like I had no clue who the guy was that played Roman or the lady who played Mrs.Loomis so both those reveals seem so random to me. But I get that they are big names so it was cool that they were killers.)
2 and 3 switch up a lot for me but I think Scream 2 has one of the best Act 1 and 2 but the least rewatchable Act 3/killer reveal and with Scream 3 I think only the two Gales make it rewatchable BUT it has an amazing Act 3 imo, I love everyone running around the mansion maze getting killed off. But also has the worst killer reveal haha
5 just doesn’t really have anything special in it. It’s fine for a Scream movie, and a tribute to Wes but it didn’t just take a breath and give us a good suspenseful scene or chase.

36:10 - Wrong. Sidney and Gale never intended to have the killers arrested. They wanted the killers dead. Which is why in the hospital scene with Sam, Sidney and Gale, Sid says to Sam "I won't rest until he's in the ground. I want you to help us kill him."

  • @WB-H
    @WB-H Před rokem +2

The first three Stab films had the main character of ‘Sidney Prescott’. Played by Tori Spelling and whoever replaced Angelina in Stab 3. They could’ve easily made Stab 4, 5, 6 and 7 with the main character being named ‘Sidney’ and make no reference to her last name. From a legal perspective, it’s easily attainable. Depending on the contents of the films themselves, it may be arguable that Sidney could sue for them using her likeness. But if the actions of the character within 4-7 don’t match with what Sidney is actually like, that is a point the studio could argue saying it is a separate character and not a representation of Sidney Prescott.
I completely agree that it is messily written and massively overlooked but from a legal perspective it is possible.

Yeah. Movies depict real people without their permission. Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay had a depiction of George Bush and I doubt they asked Bush about it. Team America depicted a bunch of celebrities and they definitely didn't get all of their permission.

The reason the Scream franchise is my all time favorite (not just in horror) is because the first film is literally the only film to scare me. I first saw it when I was 10 and by that point I'd seen SOOO many horror films. Scream actually scared me AND on multiple viewings. So that always stuck with me. Also, the writing, directing, acting, characters, etc is all top notch. When it comes to the sequels, I look at the whole franchise as one big story. Like you would a tv series. So when I talk about my favorite movie, I lump all of the films together. I don't have a ranking. There are things about each film that I love over the others. So I enjoy them all equally.
Also, everything Zack said are his reasons for hating Amber are my reasons for loving her. I just genuinely enjoyed Mikey Madison's performance. Not to mention how aggressive her Ghostface was.

And I know it’s not perfect but how wonderful all those Easter eggs for the big fans. The whole movie is just stuffed with Easter eggs from past movies and I really appreciate it mostly for that reason solely. They definitely overlooked some things but they put some real details on it and it makes my heart happy. I’ll always appreciate it because of that.

Today for me: 1, 2, 3, 5, 4…I think that Tara is more of a Gail - part of the equation by her circumstance where as Sam was born into it and will have to redeem herself in spite of who her father was. Sidney had a lot of guilt and shame to work through, being Maureen Prescott’s daughter, especially throughout the first two movies. What do I know?? Very thought provoking to consider 🙌🏽

There once was a film named Scream…The writing was great although their seemed to be somewhat of a plot struggle. This was like a transformers/ Jurassic park movie. Like the bots and Dinos,Ghost face is definitely the star and the cast are incidental. The character with the best lines, screen time and purpose IS Ghostface. It had emotional moments that made me sad for both victim and GF. He seemed fed up. The writing in this film has cut the cord and GF is free to roam at will, legacy/revenge/cults no longer matter.

Thinking about your point about the killers being stupid in this movie got me thinking about how every killer in this series is stupid. With Stu, his excuse was peer pressure(like that would hold up). With the 2nd film, Timothy olyphant's character thought to blame the media, Roman was just sad and pathetic and Jill didn't really care about Charlie who wasn't smart enough to realize Jill was using him. So every killer was stupid. 😃

  • @AntonioGee

40:12 this applies to Halloween Ends as well lol. 59:36 everyone knows how mad Gale's bangs were and the movie even acknowledges this, when Sam and Ritchie enter Dewey's "house" Gale says 'bangs again, stage an intervention'. 1:27:32 Luckily Gale and Sydney were frozen in time in the kitchen while Sam fought with Ritchie and conveniently walk out once she kills him lol then Tara is just conveniently standing there with a gun just waiting for Amber to come back alive? Ok. 1:32:44 lol. Agree that Dewey's kill was contrived, also really dislike Sam's dumb smirk when the elevator opens up right before Dewey shoots Ghostface. 2:25:26 this line was made because the writers were probably aware that Neve wouldn't return and so this is about Scream not Stab, as she will have been in every movie except the last one (Scream 6). 2:39:05 yea I'm not on the ride for act 3, so much nonsense lol. 2:44:27 no one would say what Ritchie says as they're getting stabbed to death, stupid line and then it's topped with the "I still prefer the Babadook." 2:44:43 if she were to be good in 5cream doesn't change that she wasn't great (being nice) in Scream 5.
Oh and when at the Meeks place where we see pictures of Randy there is a picture of the cinema showing and the movies are 'A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House On The Left'

My head canon for the Stab movies after watching Scream 5 was Tori Spelling returned to play Sidney in Stab 3. The character was not part of 4 and didn’t do well at the box office. So for Stab 5 the time travel had Ghostface go back not to stop Sidney from ever being born, but to become her father. Therefore her name wouldn’t be Sidney Prescott and the studio could go on using the character with a different name.
Also another lazy writing moment surrounding the Stab films: Tara reveals Vince Vaughan played Stu, but when Mindy is watching Stab that is clearly not Vince Vaughan playing Stu.

Had him come back and deliver the bullet, and just as he’s about to take off the mask and show who it is, a second Ghostface steps out and takes him out. That would have been unexpected and a more satisfying exit. They could have had it as Liv as the 3rd Ghostface

I'd go 1 > 2 > 4 > 5 >>>>> 3. I know it's cliche to hate on 3 and a lot of people have recently come around on it, but I just can't. It feels so un-Scream-like to me. At least with 4 and 5 time has passed, the actors are older and it's tackling different things so it feels justified. But there's an uncanny valley feeling to the oddities of 3
    Best opening kill: 1 > 2 > 5 > 4 > 3
    Best Sidney: 1 > 3 > 4 > 5 > 2
    Best killers: 1 > 4 > 5 > 2 > 3
Regarding Sam. I do think her performance is wooden and it's not justified via some "Well she's medicated and mentally ill" excuse. It feels painful watching her in some scenes. Especially when she's supposed to give emotion, I think that's when it really sticks out. I do like the Billy Loomis stuff and think it honestly has great potential, so I look forward to seeing how it develops in Scream 6. And yeah it would've been great to play with Sam possibly being the killer in this new film. The way they did it, it just kind of made a lot of the characters (eg Mindy) seem unlikeable for randomly accusing Sam whereas we the audience weren't on the same page with that reasoning. But if they made it more likely, idk. I think they might do that in Scream 6, and if not then Scream 7. I like the idea of her losing time and having gaps in her memory, black-outs, etc where she feels like she's taken over by Billy.
With the Tara thing, I feel like her not being Amber's girlfriend might've been changed once they cast Jenna Ortega since she would've been barely an adult when they started filming so they maybe felt icky about it since the Amber actress is a few years older. The age difference is only a few years so doesn't make sense to me but it might to them in this day and age. My take is that they really should've kept it. Not only would the representation be good (Don't forget it's not just Amber being gay -- Tara would too which is so rare for a horror movie protagonist (and arguably the final girl) to be openly queer. Would've made her more interesting too and it seems like they reverted her to straight in Scream 6 which is disappointing that the chance was missed) but ALSO idk it would've made more sense. For one, it would make Amber (and Tara) more interesting and layered characters, but also it would tie Tara and Sam together more, and make the pair of killers more interesting with having them both be romantically involved with one of the final girls. A great subversion and reflection and play with an old trope that also ties into the movie being a requel
I think I'm in the middle when it comes to Amber. I like her reenacting Psycho and I like her doing everything to defend herself ("I was radicalized!", "Nono wait I'm so sorry about Dewey"). It makes me laugh. The times I cringe is when she acts evil/intimidating. "Now that's a fucking villain" had really bad delivery, I feel like and there are some parts I don't buy. I would've loved if it was more fleshed out. Richie definitely feels better in that department where his motivation shines through in the performance and delivery of each line. You get a good vibe of who he really is once the facade drops. And I like the subversion of Billy where he's the evil boyfriend but rather than being slimy and cunning and charming but also creepy from the beginning he's sort of nerdy and pathetic. It's a good idea that they needed to do at some point, so glad they did, even if it's predictable. I think his idea was done the best it could. Amber on the other hand definitely feels like she had more potential and is maybe why she has so many diehard fans -- people who are reading into that potential and fascinated by the subtext. I wish it was executed better, and like I said her having more of a relationship with Tara would work for me, with the possessive and clinginess. In the movie thought it feels annoying because she's just Tara's friend and their relationship is sort of confusing -- Tara doesn't reciprocate the friendship at all. And I know it's not an acting issue because it's Jenna Ortega, but you have Amber acting a little controlling (she feels older than Tara too rather than them being on equal footing). Idk there was potential there that feels lost. I do like the Billy-Stu parallel and I think they sort of feel like them, not just individually and in their dynamic but their overall energy/motivation. Billy and Stu, like Sidney says, have seen one too many scary movies. The way they're giddy and feel like children but twisted into something darker feels expertly reflected in Richie and Amber, because so much time has passed that now the original Billy-Stu killers ARE the scary movies that the new killers are reenacting.
It's definitely the same Mark xD In the original script he's on screen and there's a scene of Sidney getting the kids ready for school rather than being on a jog
I agree with Zack 100% that the unique thing about Scream as a horror franchise is that there's no resets, no convoluted watching order, no multiple character incarnations... It tells one continuous story with the characters and focuses on that

So my list go 1, 2, 4, 3, 5, 3 and 4 are neck to neck tho. I knew amber was the killer 5 minutes in the movie and I'm still heated that i was right. The texting and the video was Two big red flags in my face. But it was ultimately the glossing over her involvement. I whispered to my boyfriend she the killer. Cause why nobody was asking more questions about her whereabouts and how the killer got her phone, And the video wasn't even live. So my distrust was set in, so my eyes where always on her. Everything she said was always second guess and took for face value. But the boyfriend had me, i did not see that coming. Before the movie i was apart of a big Facebook group, if your scream fan you probably know them, anyway when the motive came out and the motive was the whole stab fans. I took good long hard look at the scream fandom. I knew the joke was on us. Cause the movie we got was the movie that we wanted. This is the toxic fandom movie. The villains we wanted was us. It's a perfect combination of sci-fi, action and horror in my opinion as others like Cody leach and Jeremy jahns and sean chandler have mentioned in their reviews. And because it's the only terminator movie where Arnold is the villan, he is a lot more intemidating and a prime example of badasserie, unlike the sequels, which turned him into the comic relief. And we can also make the argument that Sarah Conor is basically a final girl, one of the best in the genre! so why not?
