- 🚪 After an 11 year hiatus, and a seemingly sound conclusion to the original Scream trilogy, Scream 4 (or SCRE4M) quietly sauntered into theatres with little to no marketing. As a result, it received a remarkably underwhelming box office intake which seemed to pump the brakes on any onward momentum for immediate future sequels. No matter how you feel about Scream 4 though, it can be argued that even this franchise's low points, which are few and far between, are way above the cut of any of the other heavy hitting horror franchise (mostly due to Wes Craven's talents as a filmmaker). So in this episode, we dive into the fourquel to discuss what we liked, what we didn't like, what could have been done differently to make this a more successful movie, what makes this one stand out from the rest, and as always, we'll be choosing which character we think was most deserving to die.

I got to meet Hayden Panettiere on her episode of Red Table Talk. She is amazing 🥰 It's funny because I met Jada Pinkett-Smith too so I technically met two Scream stars 🤣 Both are nice as hell too.
I LOVED her episode, that was so hard to hear what she's going through with custody. Its so sad.

I chose Robbie as the Cherry Picker purely because of ignorance. He was the head of the cinema club and never even suspected that Charlie could be the killer. I mean cmon he’s supposed to be an expert at these things 😂

They need to bring Jennifer back. If they can allow Kirby, Dewey and Chad to survive their injuries, they can find away to say she survived.
I can see where Zack's coming from about seeing more flaws as time has gone on, but I still rank it higher than 2 and 3 and have a good time like Eddie. I do admit it's a lot due to nostalgia bias as this was the first Scream premiere I experienced and I have so many fond memories about the movie and that time period. It's one of the only movies I have on DVD and i remember going out to buy it as soon as it came out.
Kirby is the definite Cherry on Top this movie. Her overall screen presence is dynamic and she has a lot of good moments throughout like the closet scene and her Ghostface call. The only run for her money is Jill once she's revealed as the killer because crazy Jill is iconic. In a similar sentiment to Zack though, innocent Jill isn't endearing or interesting.

Jill is my favorite Ghostface killer of them all because she manage to operate the whole plot without any killings under the mask.Also she is still alive in the universe.

"I have no idea who Laurie Strode is" basically sums up why I don't like Halloween. It's such a messy franchise that its own final girl is lost in two different timelines.
I'd like to see them unmask a Ghost Face earlier in the movie (maybe halfway). It would be a shock and add a new dynamic with them now trying to find the final GF. You could even have some mindgames between the GF who gets caught and our characters -- have him/her sew doubt and mistrust into the rest of their relationships as they question who the final killer is
I 100% noticed the weird interaction between Sidney and Dewey. A lot of others have too. It made me feel like they were setting up a possible romance for future movies.
Every complaint about pacing and killer being gone for a while and too many set pieces is how I feel about Scream 2

@@Mendejito How come you didn't like Scream 2s set pieces? The opening theatre scene is so iconic..heck it's the only opening that didn't need a phone call involved. The car crash scene again the suspense is awesome..Gale being chased in that sound proof studio room. I watched it on 4k just last night and still it's my favourite in the franchise. When you look at the theatre scene or randy death scene seeing people killed in public places even in broad daylight for me is so clever and frightening
@@Michael-cz6ob I never said I didn’t like it lol. The theatre scene is my favorite opening of any sequel. What I meant by the set pieces is more so the end of the movie, just not a fan of that part as well as the cafeteria scene and just other scenes that pad the run time for me
Scream 2 is PERFECT
It's probably apparent by now, but I'm a HUGE Scream fan. I saw Scream 4 twelve times in theatres including once in IMAX. I have so much fun with this film.
I don't think they had uploaded their first murders yet. Firstly, during the Cinema Club scene, Charlie and Robbie say if they really wanted to be new and innovative they would film the murders. They didn't say that as if they knew the killers had already done that. Also, Jill also says at the end "We'll cut and upload it later and make it all traceable back to Trevor."
I doubt it but I wonder if Kirbys "Get Out...of My House!" is an homage to Missys "Get Out... of.. My House!" from I Know What You Did Last Summer.
It is REALLY similar! I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed that before. you could definitely beat ghostface at horror trivia lol! Even if it’s just a coincidence though, that’s pretty cool!
Came back just to listen to the "bad teacher" part at the end. Eddie's laughter was just contagious and it was such a perfect example of your chemistry and humor together. Gave me a much needed laugh tonight. 😃
Zack Scream Season 1 was a MASTERPIECE you need to rewatch it & talk about it
I completely agree. There was REALLY good story telling there. I remember just finding it randomly during grad school, wanting something on in the background while I worked. I didn’t get much work done.
Scre4m is actually my favorite entry in the Scream franchise. It’s not the best, (Scream (1996) will forever hold that title) but it’s the one I find enjoyment in the most. From the killers’ reveals, from the gore and from all the characters, I love it so much. The first time I watched it was in 2020, (back then I wasn’t really a fan of this franchise) and I’ve seen it probably about 40 times since. It was the film that got me into loving the Scream franchise, and more importantly horror. It sounds corny, but this movie changed my life.
Glad you mentioned the extended cuts. They certainly help the film by adding more scenes (particularly with Jill and Trevor and their relationship).
I wish the link you had on one of your videos still worked, but enjoyed that version (though I would probably remove the red herring scenes that occur right after Trevor/Jill's hospital scene. i.e. Judy overhearing Gale persuading Sidney to go to Cinema Club, Perkins standing guard and threatening a student, and Charlie and the mask while setting up the Stabathon with Robbie equals too many red herrings within a 10 minute time frame).
I think the only thing I'd want if an official extended cut is ever released are the scenes that haven't been released be included as well (except for the previously mentioned red herring scenes and Gale getting a scoop from the cops):
-Dewey in the Kitchen (you see it in the bloopers briefly and I'm guessing Gale maybe factored into based on early sides)
-Perkins searching Jill's closet (makes him look more capable than goofy)
-The remembrance week scenes (those that were shot at least, as there were tons there were written, but weren't shot or were partially shot. I think there's a still of Kirby watching those scenes that's out there on the internet)
-Kate's introduction at the bookstore
-An extended cinema club with Trevor getting out of his seat (TV Spot)
Then some of the bigger ones:
-Sidney being arrested for the murders (look at the B-roll and you see here in Pink Pajamas) while Jill looks on. It was a subplot that would reflect the remake theme in the sense of an arrest happening the second night of the murders (Billy being arrested, but now ironically Sidney). There are hints of this plot thread in the existing film (the evidence planted in Sidney's car, the townspeople blaming Sidney for the murders, and Judy mentioning her fleeing the scene of Kate's death). It creates more urgency and makes Sidney's situation more dire.
-A moment between Sidney, Jill, and Kate outside the Roberts Residence (again Sidney wearing the Pink Pajamas, though it may be part of the arrest scene, but I think it's a separate one).
I'm sure there are other scenes I don't know of that haven't been released, but I think they would help with the movie (mainly with Kate being more developed and Jill not dropping out of the film as much).
Another banger episode! My favorite franchise. I agree it is the most consistent horror franchise out there. I also have minor gripes with this one but have actually fallen in love with it more over the years.
Actually subscribed to your channels and I never have subscribed to any channel but your work is super amazing! Plus, Scream is my favourite franchise and I love that your from Canada. Since 2012, I’ve had an idea/plot for another instalment for the franchise. Thanks for all your input and honesty regarding the franchise and the horror genre too!

I know you said you don’t want one killer, but that’s exactly what I want at some point. I like the theory that Roman wasn’t working alone as that just makes more sense, but I want it done differently. I want it to be two killers but only one is revealed and killed. As a result the second killer simply stops and lets that person take the fall. But the survivors say, maybe as the final line, something like “Aren’t there usually two killers?” With everyone suspicious of each other as it cuts to credits. I just think that’s a beautiful ending and a perfect set up
The fact that u have to explain the infamous "Casa Bonita" episode to anyone is crazy to me 🤣🤣
The thing I like about this movie is leading up they played it like a passing of the baton, like they were introducing new characters to carry on the franchise and fazing out the OG characters, only to say at the end NOPE don't fuck with the orignal.
Another wonderful episode. Finished it with such a smile on my face. It always feels right when you guys talk about Scream too, which made it even better. As much as the "bad teacher" conversation had me dying laughing, I have to go with Robbie. I'd want to punch him on the daily if he was in my circle of friends/acquaintances. Just obnoxious and creepy on top of disrespectful and oblivious. Also adore Kirby and approve of her as the Cherry on Top 100%. Love you guys and thanks for your hard work and cheering up my week as always. Excited for the Hollow Man episode 😁

4 is my 2nd favorite scream movie at the moment. But I haven't seen 5CREAM yet so who knows. I love you guys
I saw Scre4m on opening night back in 2011. There was maybe 5 other people in the theater. I loved it. I thought it was easily the most fun Scream since the original. This was a bright spot for horror during the remake era which I personally hated. This gave me what I wanted from a Scream movie.
This is an interesting movie looking back on. The movie is commenting on remakes but this isn't a remake it's a sequel. In a lot of ways this kinda feels like a soft reboot/requel or whatever you call it. It brings back the original characters but also has the new generation of characters. It's what I would have wanted instead of remakes. This kinda made 5cream slightly disappointing to me as it kinda felt like a retread.
It's also funny looking back at stuff from around a decade ago. It's both kinda modern but also kinda dated. It makes me wonder how movies made in this current time will age.
I thought the same about Dewey and Sid. I was like "ruh roooooh" lol
I pick Mr. Baker. Maybe the essay was: Why is Woodsboro the best place...to die. Plot twist. Third killer reveal.

the series was not bad at all…i’m 30 and have loved every film in this franchise. the series is it’s own thing but has the vibe of scream at it’s core. it’s worth a watch if you are a fan of the series.
I would love a cliffhanger with a third killer. You can't complain about it being the same and then not want it to change. Scream needs to break away from the mold quite drastically otherwise it will get tired. The more I watch Scream 5 the less I like it. And Scream 4 is now my second. I would have loved to see the original idea for Scream 5 with Jill's secret.

Yeah they may as well present the multiple killers from the get go, and play with that throughout the movie. Create a full sequence where it's two killers in a chase, or some scenario. Have them work together in the robes. It would be nice to see this done, at the least one time, c'mon. Complicate and freshen the interactions that way.

I work in the industry and I definitely say some people are TOXIC behind the scenes. And I don't even mean cast, I mean crew. We all have our own blacklist with names we won't work with.
My own two cents: I think people don’t like this movie because they see a lot of themselves in Jill more than they want to admit. The desire for fame and success without the work or the experience to yield them - that probably describes a lot of people in this day and age.
My personal issue with Scre4m was that there was no hype leading up to it, I saw it opening weekend as well but I felt like I was alone in being exited and after the movie was over I was left sitting in the theatre thinking "Huh, I guess that's it" The marketing was honestly some of the worse I've seen for a movie (Next to John Carter) I remember there was initially hype after it was announced and then set photos hitting the web but after the first trailer dropped no one seemed to be talking about it. I think the April release date was a bad idea plus some places were labeling it a "Horror comedy" so my guess is that the general public thought it was a parody movie and not really a 4th Scream film when it fact was a continuation but of course no one knew what it was because there was no marketing or anything for it
Kirby and Jill are two of my favorite characters in the franchise, but past that, I think SCRE4M is kind of a hot mess.
Honestly it's a mess but I kind of love it for that? Like Jill setting the scene at the end of the film is so funny and enough to take it above scream 3 in my rankings just for that
@@benjones3146 That is my favorite scene in 4, and also my favorite scene outside of anything from the original. I love it so much that when it came out, I decided 4 was better than 2 because of it, but in hindsight I realized that was an error.

I don't understand how people think Lena/Esther can kill a bunch of people but Jill or Charlie can't just because they're short. They definitely can. Also, everyone else in the movie is short so it helps.

The formula is getting a bit stale by this point, but work well enough (especially the third act). Also, Jill is my favorite villain of the franchise.
The legacy characters are used here much more effectively than Scream 5.

I like when a Scream movie ends with reporters reporting. 1, 2 and 4 did it. That's one of the things I didn't like about three. 5 was good enough that it didn't really bother me.

I think she’s more of a little sister to him and since Tatum was more of a firecracker, he appreciated Sidney being nicer.

Still not a big fan of Scream 4. For me just like Scream 5 it doesn't add anything to the story going forward or have character development. 3 is messy sure but it closes the story nicely and fits a decent trilogy together
Jill is my least favorite killer in the franchise. Maybe it's because Emma roberts line delivery in this movie is beyond cringe but God damn is she so boring in terms of motive and execution.
Jill before and after her reveal makes me itch. My least favorite ghostface.

IMO Scream 4 is what Scream 2022 tried to be for the second time and the only reason why 2022 is looked at better is because it came after 4 and 4 came after a near 10 year hiatus from 3. 4 is undeniably the third best in the franchise
I think Scream 5 is seen more favourable cause it actually goes through with what 4 only teased. Establishing new main characters and pushing the franchise forward.
I kinda felt this way in regards to both movies. In a way Scre4m was ahead of the curve in terms of soft reboots/requels. It was commenting on remakes but the previous movies were still cannon. I think 2011 wasn't the right time for this movie as it was too far from post-Scream slasher craze to cash in but it also wasn't old enough to be retro yet.

@@robertholston4708 exactly, rewatching it was crazy. there’s so many call backs to the older movies that pay homage and it was the last one directed by Wes before he passed. I think it did more for the franchise than 2022
