    Kev's unbridled optimism is refreshing and something to be admired especially in an overly cynical, instant gratification world but truth be told, I almost always agree with Marc's take on films because he views them through a lens of a writer and movie buff whereas Kevin's lens has 99% fanboy tint. Personally I like to consider films or shows or novels or whatever on two grounds. Entertainment and story, separately, which is kind of what they do, Kev is all about the entertainment, Marc about the story. Some movies are entertaining, but there is not a lot behind them, it is just fun to watch. Sometimes the story is well told, makes sense, but it is not fun. And although Marc is frequently critical, that does not mean he dislikes something, or that he was not entertained, just that he found specific holes in the story, which I mean you will always find, nothing is perfect. Most comics are entertaining, but the story is kind of shit (largely due to the corporate structure I would say, every time Peter Parker has gotten some character growth over the last 20 years someone higher up hit a reset switch). There are some great comics that are good at both (Sandman and some Vertigo shit mostly), some of which can get close to not being entertaining but having good stories (individual issues of Lucifer that are building up to something spring to mind). So yeah, for me they make a great combo.

    ScreenX is not just the movie screen wrapped around, it is additionally filmed and unique footage projected on the left and right walls, it was *great* for the Wembley scene in Bohemian Rhapsody.
    There only 4 in the world, and they all are in towns beginning with L;
    LA, Las Vegas, London, and Liberty Missouri (where the family that pioneered it lives). A beautiful theater there!
    Unique footage has to be filmed at the time the movie's being made, basically three cameras pointed 45 degrees apart from each other, and it kicks in during important parts of the film, like in Bohemian Rhapsody any scene that was at a concert or in a club, or overlooking a city or landscape it either fades in or wipes around the auditorium.
    It's one of the few gimmicks I've gone to see that I thought that all movies going forward should be feeling like this...

      Having a character arc is not the definition of being a protagonist. Ideally, everyone in every story has a character arc, in reality only the good characters tend to though. Killmonger in Black Panther has the arguably better story arc than T'Challa (partially because T'Challa's is pretty limited and has things literally given to him, which is my general problem with BP, but Eric's is basically Hamlet's and that has stood up pretty well for 400 years), which is why he is an awesome villain and that is a great movie.

    I thought Arthur grew quite a bit. He learns about the value of mercy, and he learns to grow beyond just being a blunt instrument/ talking with his fists.
    Black Manta’s entire beef with him starts because Arthur refused to show mercy to Manta’s father. Later, when Mera tells him he has to confront Orm, he brushes her off and just says that whenever Orm DOES come to the surface, Arthur will treat him the same way the Atlanteans treated his mother - “with no mercy”.
    Black Manta’s attack later in Sicily makes Arthur realize the consequences of his lack of mercy towards Manta’s father, which he talks about on the boat with Mera.
    During that same talk, he tells Mera that he’s not fit to be king because he believes that the only thing he’s good at is “being a blunt instrument” and “talking with his anger and his fists”.
    This is followed through when Arthur communicates with the sea monster guarding the trident. He tries using his fists first, and upon realizing that that won’t work, he reaches out and speaks to it. And he proves his worth not through fighting prowess, but through his humility and his desire to protect the people he cares about.
    Then these two aspects of his arc come together in his final confrontation with Orm. He’s supposed to kill Orm to take the throne (Orm even says that “mercy isn’t the Atlantean way”), but Arthur refuses and shows him mercy anyway. And afterwards, he tells Orm that the two of them should talk when Orm is ready, showing how he’s grown beyond just “talking with his fists”.
    As for what he wants - throughout the movie, Arthur seems to be stuck between land and sea, and is unsure of where he fits into either. After Mera has to betray her father/home to help him, Arthur says, “At least you have a home”, showing that he feels he doesn’t. In the end, by taking the throne, he’s found where he belongs - as ruler of Atlantis, to bridge land and sea.
    So yeah. I’d say the writing for Arthur’s arc was actually one of the highlights of the movie for me. Like how great is it that his most ridiculed power (talking to fish) is his most important ability in the movie?

    @IceDragon978 Před 5 lety +126

    Aquaman has its faults, but Marc's argument is totally baseless.
    1. Aquaman (the character) does want something. He wants to protect people. He's willing to put his life on the line, and use his skills and innate talents, to protect people. This is literally the impetus of the entire story. He challenges Black Manta to protect the sailors on the submarine. He challenges Orm in the first place to protect the land dwellers. He challenges the incomprehensible eldritch horror in the hidden sea to protect the land dwellers and the sea dwellers, and proves his worth literally by expressing his want to protect the beings of the land and sea, which leads me to point two, but first... He challenges Orm once again in order to protect all parties; the humans on the land under threat of destruction by Orm for existing, and the beings of the sea under threat of destruction by Orm for not joining him.
    2. Aquaman does learn something, and it does change him, and it's the only reason he could win in the end. He learns that he's needed. He learns that he's wanted. This is important for a character who feels like an outcast in two different worlds. He also learns that not only CAN he be king, but he actually HAS to be. It's the only way he can truly save everyone, or really, anyone. Orm has to be deposed, and it has to be Arthur who does it. And then there's the fact that Orm beats him handily in their first meeting and he beats Orm in their second. Why is that? Well, it's because Aquaman LEARNED how to fight to his strengths, instead of his weaknesses. He learned how to know what he knows and know what he doesn't know. He learned how to not start off on the back foot, so to speak.
    I respect Marc a lot, but he unfairly maligned Aquaman (the film) here.

    • @ericsonofjohn9384
      @ericsonofjohn9384 Před 5 lety +9

      Marc's claims to have base, half of your arguments don't.
      1) I largely agree with your first point, I agree that he simply wants to help people throughout the movie, and it's nice to see a dc hero who just wants to help people, a favourable part of mine is when he saves the little girl from the falling debris by jumping into it. However WHY does he want to help people? The film has a general lack of motivation for his character from start to finish, he never really gives any indication of why he bothers at all, yes it's the right thing, but for a guy who's been hated and dissed his entire life, he at least needs some compelling reason to want to save people. Peter David's aquaman is my favourite run because in that there are times when he choses sea life over humans, and simply choses to save who he thinks in the right at the time. So yes I agree he does want to help, but no reason is given as to why.
      2) I strongly disagree with you here. "He learns that he's needed", well he kind of new that from the start, the whole reason he went on the quest was because the world needed him to take the throne of Orm. "He learns that he's wanted", by whom? Mera? The people of Atlantis don't want him at all, in fact they show a real sense of hatred towards him when they first see him. "He learns that only he can be king" well yes, but Mera said that to him from the start lol, that revelation does not really change his character, don't get me wrong the speech from mera about being from 2 different worlds was nice, but it didnt change his character at all. "It's the only way he can save anyone", well that bullshit, did you not see the start of the movie, he was already saving people, he just needed to become king to avert a crisis and that's the point, he doesnt change as a person to become king or once he has, he just does and is the same as when he started.
      Okay your last point made me laugh so much because it really is really ridiculous, he beat Orm because Mera literally said to him, "fight him on your turns, hint out of water", if you really think that was a deep character change then it just shows how poorly you understand character. It's not even as if he overcame his original arrogance too much, he literally just beat orm because they were out of water, and you think that's a character change?
      So in conclusion, yes he wanted to help people, but through the holes and lack of real evidence in your argument you have simply proved that no he did not really change at all, and I love the movie and saw it four times.
      It's amusing because after calling Marc's claims baseless you then argue with them with a completely shallow and subjective point.
      Awaiting your response, peace

      IceDragon978 There was an entire scene of Aquaman expressing remorse for the fact that he was the one who had MADE Black Manta by not saving the latter’s father.
      He came to the realization that if he would have stepped up and saved black mantas dad, then maybe the two of them would have turned out differently. Aquaman realized that if he has the power to help people, but doesn’t, it makes him no better than Manta and people suffer.
      He wants to help people because it’s the right thing to do, and that’s how he was raised.
      He WANTS closure about his mom.

      @@ComicsLamar 1) "There was an entire scene of Aquaman expressing remorse for the fact that he was the one who had MADE Black Manta by not saving the latter’s father" - expressing remorse for killing someone earlier is not a character arc is it. He only expressed that remorse because he could have been the reason Mera got hurt.
      2) "Aquaman realized that if he has the power to help people, but doesn’t, it makes him no better than Manta and people suffer" - so are you saying his character arc was to not kill? because he kills people at the end of the movie lol, your scraping the bottom of the barrel here for actual character development, apart from a few lines of dialogue his character does not change at all really, I'll accept that he choses not to kill Orm but again that's not a characer arc.
      3) You're assuming that is how he was raised, it may well be, but the movie should have showed it. Character motivations should happen on screen, he was bullied as a child for being different, so from what we have seen he would have no reason to help humans at all, why not have a scene where he uses his sea life control to harm one of the bullies, and then his father tells him of the responsibilities of his powers, and tells him to only use them to help people? That would have been far better than giving no clear reason for why he wants to help people.
      4) Yes he wants closure about his mum, that's not a character arc
      5) he has a few lines of dialogue of regret about letting manta's father die, do you really think that constitutes as a solid character arc? Seriously?
      5) Yes he wants to mend things with orm lol, that is AGAIN NOT A CHARACTER ARC, he just sees more of orm's perspective and doesnt kill him.

    Shallow? Yeah, or at least not very fleshed out, but it is still somewhat of that journey, isn't it? Arthur is different at the end of the movie, compared to the beginning. Not totally different, but a little bit. And are those little changes not a typical thing for comic book heroes?

    • @Lowlandlord
      @Lowlandlord Před 5 lety

      Well put, agree 100%. Arthur is different enough that he changes his shirt. New one is all royal and shit. And for good comic book stories, the changes tend to be a little more. Like Peter Parker has had probably dozens of bigger changes over the years (many of which get reset periodically because there is a perception among Marvel management that Peter only works as a loser who wants things, when he has job security and a marriage it's all screwed, apparently). Notably though he changes from being okay with criminals that don't mess with him to fighting any criminal, anywhere, over pretty much anything, which comes from that one criminal he was okay with killing Uncle Ben. Off the top of my head Bats, the X-Men, Animal Man, Sandman, Swamp Thing, Namor, the FF, the Avengers, they all have stories with significantly more character growth and changes. Many of them have one shots with more, and that is arguably the point of some of the Vertigo stuff (Sandman is kind of "change or die, and changing is a form of death" at it's core), Lucifer is probably the Vertigo guy that changes the least, although when we meet him (in an issue of Sandman) he does change and leaves Hell, but then he is mostly following plans that he and God had set out in opposition to each other millennia ago. One of the beauties of Lucifer is actually how things that happen in the first couple issues, or in the mini-series runs from before the series started properly, that show up again later on and all tie together. And one of the points of that character is that he does not really get changed by external forces, he is above that, if he changes it is due to something internal, he wants his wings back because NOW they suit his plans. But he does not experience a lot of character growth, he is too arrogant to let that happen, still who he is in Sandman and who he is in Lucifer 75 (Sandman and the spinoffs all went for 75 issues) are more different than who Arthur is at the start and who he becomes at the end of the movie.

    Arthur Curry's want is to be allowed to exist. In Atlantis he's referred to as a half-breed. On land he's picked on due to his Atlantan abilities. His existence is his ability to communicate to both sides. The skill that made Aquaman a joke for so long, to communicate to fish, is used amazingly in this film. His land skills allow him and Mera to dive thru the trench, what Atlantans believed to be a sea of savages, only to find that untouched paradise and his mother. Land and sea now have a means of communication thru Arthur. He even spares Orm's life and offers to talk to him once things settle down. The hero's journey doesn't have to be so literal or done only one way....

      ShelbyBaby27 yh but most of the things you mentioned are just referenced once and then immediately dropped without any real depth. He’s called a half breed but how does it ever actually impact him throughout the movie? Id doesnt, they call him that during the fight and then later they all cheer for him without any kind of revelation. And he barely used his ability to communicate with sea life, he uses it like 3 times in the movie. Again yes land and sea now have communication through him, another idea that is mentioned in the movie, but the concept is literally just mentioned as a passing comment, it has no impact or actual part in the movie, in terms of aquaman’s character the movie had flaws, it was good but dont mention all these shallow points pretending it’s got the depth of shakespeare

    • @Lowlandlord
      @Lowlandlord Před 5 lety

      No one picks on Arthur on land. Kids picked on him, when he was a kid. They did that to me too, and if I am being honest I picked on people too. Don't make me an alien with super powers, just part of being a kid for most people. As for "literal or done only one way" I have no idea what you mean by literal, because a you literally just described a literal hero's journey and no one said anything about it being done one way, but they choices they made were far from original on that side of things, most of the movie is Last Crusade mixed in with the Sword in the Stone. From a literally pov, "want to be allowed to exist" is not a want. I want to breath, here I am breathing, this is something I am already doing and existing with no outside problems is something Arthur is also doing, along with breathing. The complaint is that he has no ambition, no drive, no goal. The goals and ambitions he achieves in the film are not his own, they are ones that were given to him, we have lots of great stories about people GIVING UP the goals and ambitions that were given to them, people who don't want to fulfill destiny. He has less drive to do something that The Dude from Big Lebowski, if that wave had of hit anywhere where he or a loved one was not he would have just kept on doing his own thing, not unlike how I will stay in bed all day unless something pushes me out.
      Also, "untouched paradise" is kind of a stretch for the pocket dimension where the Cthonic monster (literally Cthonic, the space itself is actually towards the centre of the Earth) and the trident are located. I would call it a Hell-like-paradise, considering the giant monster and shit, but that is me.

    I usually love Marc's insight but he was so wrong about Aquaman. The beginning of the movie Aquaman does not show Manta's father mercy but he learns it and spares his brother. Also Aquaman learns to accept himself which is the significance of the special move he uses at the end to show he has accepted the truth within himself and found strength there.

    I feel like Arthur did learn in that movie. At the beginning he doesn't wanna be anyone important and just wants to be left alone, and by the time he faces down the Kraken and emerges from the Waterfall with the trident, I certainly felt that he'd become something more. He started out as a man with powers, and by the end he embraces the mantle of responsibility that comes with being a super-hero.

    Gotta disagree w/ Marc, Arthur Curry (Aquaman) DOES evolve during the course of the film. He's not the same guy he was from Justice League. After he captures the trident, he becomes more humbled and responsible for Atlantis as well as the other Kingdoms. An "irresponsible and in compassionate" Aquaman would have killed Black Manta and Orm, but he learned from his mistakes.

    • @Lowlandlord
      @Lowlandlord Před 5 lety

      Not that I disagree, but your example is "now I have a magic stick and clothes, I am going to be a better person. Conveniently this character growth is occurring right before the climatic fight in which it will be relevant at the end of". That is the definition of pretty shallow character development. And Black Manta being alive has nothing to do with that, later in the movie he is alive due to dumb luck, earlier because he had not grown at all yet (which is partially done to show growth). Also, he did not capture the trident, you don't capture tridents.

    YES to a Batman Beyond live-action movie with Keaton back as Old Bruce. It doesn't even have to be a clear sequel to the Burton movies, just have little nods to various elements of Batman's history in all the movies and comics peppered throughout the Batcave in the form of his many trophies. Just the potential teaser for the movie would give you goosebumps - turn the show's intro into the first teaser trailer, complete with the theme song. Imagine being in a movie theater and that teaser hits the screen. It would blow your balls off.

    Being a writer Marc is way too biased towards the story element of movies. Some movies simply aren't about the story, they are just about the audio-visual experience, about the fun, about the beauty of it. A beautiful sunset, landscape etc. doesn't need a good story either! They are just beautiful on their own merits. Enjoy it for what it is instead of always trying to find the fly in the ointment... or bringing a fly with you, if there isn't any.

    57:13...I’ve been saying this for years. With how nostalgic Hollywood and movie go’ers are these days, a Michael Keaton return to Batman is what the world (DC) needs today. It would likely never happen due to his role in Spider-Man these days but that role (and the Birdman movie) proved Keaton is physically and mentally ready to play the role yet again. With the right script and director (I’m guessing either Nolan returns or possibly lure M Night Shyamalan) this movie would dominate. Bring Michael Caine back as Alfred and cast two Villians-one as the main antagonist with the other in a supporting role to use in a potential sequel to this series. Jon Bernthal could play pretty much any villain well since he’s got both the acting chops and brings a level of physical bad-assery to pretty much any role. The other could be Christoph Waltz. Think about it...make it happen @kevinsmith!!

He learned that not everyone can talk to fish even Atlanteans, and with that ability combine with the trident he was able to unite most of the 7 kingdoms and become the fish god. What he learned was to forgive people that an eye for an eye isnt right (regretting killing Manta's father and letting his brother live also he cant run from what he was born to do)
    as far as a want. sort of right. he just wanted to protect his father and revenge on the atlanteans that had his mother killed. Later he wanted to protect the rest of the world form an atlantean war his brother will bring. at the end he wanted to reunite all his family

    I disagree with everything Marc Bernard says about Aquaman. He wants to help people, because he wants to help people he is willing to open up old wounds and confront the other part of his race who rejected him, because he is biracial, and not a full Atlantean. Aquaman is willing to put his own stubbornness aside to save lives and confront his other side of his race. By confronting his race in wanting to save lives, he learn his mom is still alive and learn to embrace his an Atlantean side in order to become king of Atlantis, and stop Orm. One of the many reason why Aquaman is successful is that Aquaman is a biracial character and does connect with a lot of its biracial audiences, who do have to deal with the other side of their race who do not see them as one of their own.

    There should be women doing Star Wars films but the problem seems to be that the ones who are on the list of directors who can do a film of that size would rather do something either smaller or obviously female centric. I do see Reed Moreno doing one of the Star Wars films given she had a meeting like last year I will not be shocked if she directs the Weiss/Benioff first film in their trilogy or even Michelle Maclaren.
    Main thing Hollywood and producers need to do is stop supporting female filmmakers who decide to do these self indulgent shoe gazing films about a event in their lives that are autobiographical. Stop giving money and support to the Lena Dunhams of the film world. I would include also male filmmakers like this. Women genre filmmakers need to be fully embraced.

    To anyone who wants to give marc shit, give me an example of aquaman’s character arc by telling me a) how his character is shown at the beginning, with evidence from the movie, b) how he is shown during the transition of his arc, with evidence from the movie, and c) how he is shown at the end of is arc, with evidence from the movie. I don’t believe anyone can do this, because aquaman did not have a character arc, and bringing up him feeling regret towards manta does not equal one.
    For example, in the start of wonder woman, she is shown to believe that ares is the cause of all evil, and she believes that all men are good if they are free of his corruption, this is her innocent naivety (a), then, once she meets steve, he mentions being a murderer and smuggler etc. And chief speaks about steve’s people stealing land from him, and wonder woman starts to see that people she believes to be good in this war are not as perfectly moral as she had thought, her and steve start to disagree on the belief that all men are good, a nice moment is when sammy speaks to diana about people fighting their own battles to be who they want to be (b), and lastly, at the end of the movie, through that compelling conversation with steve, Diana finally learns that evil and purity exist inside all men, and that it is a never ending battle, to be good. (C) this is the final part of her arc, where she decides to always try to fight for good. See, there are three distinct stages in her journey during the movie, so she has a character arc. I cannot do this same thing for aquaman, and I don’t think anyone can
