      @@Zvwry Rotten Tomatoes aggregates movie-critic opinion, and that's certainly been divergent from public opinion before.
      Not everyone is gonna like it, and that's fine; it's pretty out there--but I think the mediocre box office is less from people being disappointed by the movie, and more from people who are not big comics nerds not being sure they want to see the movie in the first place. I notice it had a modest opening weekend but has held up pretty well over the Christmas break. I was skeptical myself until I started hearing a lot of wildly laudatory word of mouth.
      It's a difficult movie to market; it's thoroughly established by now that live-action superhero movies can be mainstream hits, and Pixar/Disney-style cartoons (even if they have superheroes!) can be mainstream hits. But most of the general public still seems to think of animated comics adaptations as niche kid stuff, a lesser product than the live-action movies that is intended for TV or direct to video. Putting Spider-Ham in the trailers probably didn't help with that.
      Also, Spider-Man himself is a bit overexposed at this point, since they brought a fairly successful version of the character into the MCU. Most people aren't hungering for more Spider-Man. There's a certain barrier to overcome of "no, this movie is really worth seeing even if you're not that into Spider-Man right now."
      And I've heard some people wondering if they'll be able to follow it if they haven't seen the movies with Tom Holland (though in reality there's no significant connection; Spider-Verse only really references the Tobey Maguire ones, and those as in-jokes).

      ...The other movie like this right now, only even more so, is Bumblebee. I actually haven't seen Bumblebee but I'm kind of fascinated by the reception it's gotten: amazingly positive critical reception ("what? a GOOD Transformers movie?"), weird positive word of mouth comparing it to things like The Shape of Water, a downright weak opening weekend that seemed to establish it as a flop, but those numbers held up all through the past week instead of petering out to nothing, so maybe it'll make money.

      @@MattMcIrvin Funnily enough i'm actually a life long Transformer fan and I despised the Michael Bay movies but Bumblebee is so good and it gets so much right right off the bat. Immediately in the opening scene it looked like actual real Transformers, the kind I expected in 2007. I recognized every character from design alone immediately. It was so cool how it was done.
      Wish they'd just reboot the whole thing and drop anything to do with Bay.

  • @DedricLam
    @DedricLam Před 5 lety +56

    At 24:50 Marc, you discuss Miles's need. His need is community. When he's in Brooklyn he's fist bumpin'. The girls notice him. At the Visions school he's invisible. At the end of the movie, as Spiderman, saving the day, he's fist bumping and the neighborhood hero. Need fulfilled.

    • @Brandon_Powell
      @Brandon_Powell Před 5 lety +2

      I would disagree. I would say his need was to fulfill his potential. Throughout the entire movie he is holding himself back. This is represented in the symbolic gesture of him not tying his shoe. He is told his shoe is untied to which he replies "I know" and doesn't tie it. This results in him tripping off of the building during his first attempt to be Spider-Man. Also the fact that he didn't want to go to the good school that would give him more opportunities. That's what Aaron meant when he told him "you're the best of all of us" and "you just need to keep going". And after his father speaks to him from the other side of the door he realizes this and is finally able to reach his full potential.

    • @belakthrillby
      @belakthrillby Před 5 lety +13

      @@Brandon_Powell i would agree but i think you both are missing something as well. I think his journey is about carrying the weight of expectations that are on him, particularly the expectations from his father which he feels are tighting controlling who he can become. In the normal school and neighborhood he is able to be himself and be seen.
      At the visions academy he is overwhelmed with the expectations of his family, of the teachers etc. It's why his tag says "no expectations". He wants to be able to define himself but he feels all these competing pressures from outside sources. Note that his initial attempts at being spiderman all have him wearing someone else's suit. He's still trying to fulfill an expectation(this time its the dead peter's). His uncle's dying words as well as the words from his dad finally allow him to feel at peace. His uncle encourages him to continue following his own path and his father gives him his blessing to do so.
      That love and support gives him the freedom to define for himself who he wants to be. Where all the previous times he tried to demo his powers he was under pressure, when in the chair after his dad leaves all the pressure is gone. He then goes and takes the spider-man suit and make it his own. Arc completed

      The explanation:
      They are both like mother and co-workers, more casual than not, but still about to watch the" kids" go play rough with each other. Aside from knowing their respective role in this conflict, Liv know what Parker's death means to Aunt May and said aunt May either understand, or just know that Doc Oc wasn't directly responsible for this universe's Spider-Man's death. Just like when 616 Peter Parker rang her doorbell, Aunt May has brought a baseball bat, yet she has full awareness of her Peter's arsenal, so she knows that bat made of wood is purely for show, "Liv" knows it too and besides a few wacks at the Scorpion, neither really want to harm the other. Liv ain't *that* evil, (Aunt May is literally mourning her beloved Peter Parker), yet Aunt May has no interest in direct confrontation with the one person wanting to leave her relatively "out of this". So in short: they kept going along "knowing" but "doing nothing about it" until Peter Parker died and visibly, Liv did respect, like and/or understand Aunt May enough to leave her alive, if not 100% unaffected by the conflict.
      Remember: Doc Oc wasn't unaware of the "Batcave" and she's only keeping tabs because she has to, meaning without her boss say so, she'd be fine leaving Aunt May to grieve, period. My two cents.
      Anyone is/was free to read and disagree. I'm not even sure I'm schpellyng things right.

    48:21 Dude I was in tears at that scene too because when Stan said "we were friends, you know?" I thought to myself "If I were standing in front of him right now, hearing the same line, I would say that 'He saved my life.'" Because he did. I had so much tragedy in my life growing up and a Spider-Man comic book was always there. He's one of the reasons why I'm an artist myself. He's one of the reasons why I try to be as responsible as I can be for the people around me. Out of anyone in my dysfunctional household, I got my education in making those hard choices from Spider-Man comics. It was like having a fictional older brother that I always looked to to remind myself I wasn't the only one that went through these social problems, school problems, girl problems, money problems. Spider-Man is my hero and that's never changed. And I did cry at that point. Because it did feel like my hero had died. It hit me harder because, like you, this was coming from Stan. This was coming from the guy that created him with Steve Ditko. Seeing that was such a punch to the gut. It didn't matter if he was blonde haired or red haired or even bald. Spider-Man is Spider-Man. Anyone can wear the mask. The fact that a fictional characters feel this real, confect someone this much, is a testament to how well the character has been handled for the past 60 years and how on point Stan and Steve were in crafting him all those years ago. They may have gotten the concept of the powers in the costume from a jack Kirby but Peter Parker's world were all Stan and Steve's. He's the hero that we can relate to. As Mary Jane said at the funeral, we are all Spider-Man.

    I see it as the blonde peter is NOT the original Peter we know. Hes blonde and his life is essentially perfect. Hes got money, and tech and a good relationship. He loves being spiderman. And never wants to stop
    Peter B Parker is the peter we all know and love. Hes poor and guilt ridden, evidenced by not wanting to hear the w/ great power line. Hes tired of being spiderman but does it all the time, and is still excellent at it. He makes poor decisions but makes it work. Classic spidey to me.

They killed peter and miles is goin round tryin to figure out how to fill peters shoes...Miles Morales IS SPIDERMAN to me BECAUSE...the suit fits...and i think and any real spiderman fan...would be proud to say as much😎 (and yeah i know hes a character.. im old, not senile lol🤣)

    I've been a fan of Miles, almost since he was introduced. I will admit, that at first I was hoping not to like the character because I'm old school, but I loved it.
    The writing is good, with solid art directions. Plus, Miles is a stand-up guy and a perfect fit for the character.
    He makes a great addition to Marvel comic's.and Peter Parkers family. Happy he's on board!
    And here's some inside info for you, non comic book reader's, Miles has already been around for a while, in the comics.
    And rest assured, he has a legion of fans to show for it. Who knows maybe even a new movie. LOL.
    The moral and ethical standpoint of our Heros, and the issues they face, as heroes is what make them compelling, inspiring and people we wish to emulate. They stand up for what's right, and against what's wrong. They're choices and actions are what is important to me, you know like a Superheroe. I always judged my like or dislike of a comic based on that simple formula above.
    I certainly never considered, the pigment level of his skin, a factor? Nor whether they're female or male, gay straight bi or or any combination in between or where ther from Buenos Aires in Brazil or the southeast of Greenland.
    Makes no difference to me, and if you were really a comic book fan. It wouldn't make any difference to you.

    It’s amazing how this translates to myself and so many of our life stories (mixed child, estranged family, complications and somehow have a special bond with stepfather, graffiti, music, social awkwardness, there’s so much).
    It reminded me how special the original Spider-Man was to me growing up. I was devastated seeing Peter Parker crushed at the hands of kingpin and I wasn’t ready for miles to be spider-man at that moment.
    They did a great job allowing miles to enter into my spiderverse, the one i grew up on, and bringing Peter B Parker in to help him along and mentor him (pot belly and kind of burnt out from it all), I just can’t put it into words, they nailed it because a lot of us that grew up with the old Spider-Man are kinda going through the same shit/same regrets, shadow of your former self with moments of greatness, enough left to pass the torch to somebody that you see is just like the young you.
    Great stuff!
    Look forward to more of your commentary.

    People aren’t really Spider-Man fanatics watching this movie, the first spider man is the spider man marvel pushed forward “The ultimate Spider-Man” he has blonde hair because he is the “Golden-Boy” he is all the mass media Spider-Man’s what fans love to see “perfect”, he is everything you think of when you think of spider man that’s why he is as funny as the Garfield has iconic moments like Tobey and has a young charm like the new spider man, Now Peter B. Parker is the original Spider-Man from the comics all in one he had the brown hair he uses his “B.” Like in the comics, he saves the day but people forget in the comics Peter went through tragic moments and people forget that because the movies make you think his life is perfect, Spider man is amazing but Peter life sucked, people get that confused cus the thing why Tobey Spider-Man is so great cus you watch him be the golden boy you watch his life sucks and then you watch him be the golden boy again, but in the comics he’s no golden boy he’s Spider-Man and Peter B. Parker is a man who work gets in the way of his happiness he’s not perfect. The reason people love Peter B. Parker is because he is the original the underdog who life’s Change because of the spider bite all that jazz, but cus of how marvel pushed ultimate so hard with the movies you forget that Peter life sucked, also it’s not accurate to the comics but you have to remember it’s the directors and writers movie, so that’s the difference between the two, Peter Parker is ultimate Spider-Man, Golden boy, has no worries in either life, and Peter B. Parker is our spider man from the comics that even gave us the love of the character, his life changed he enjoyed his moments but he grew old and doesn’t know how to be a man, Peter B. Parker in my opinion of what hardcore comic fans know and love it’s just a joke on you guys forgetting about his life sucked so the movie makes you think he isn’t our spider man but in reality he is and we forget in the comics he is actually human when the mask isn’t on. Peter Parker is what marvel wants you to think as Peter Parker perfect

    You guys probably won't read this at this point since it's almost a year old, but just a small correction guys: Miles Morales is the second Ultimate Spider-Man. He IS from the Ultimate Comics.
    After the big crossover event "Ultimatum" in Ultimate Comics, they still had Peter as Spider-Man for a bit longer, but then they killed him off and that's when they introduce Miles Morales as a kid who was recently bit by a similar OsCorp spider as Peter. So like in this movie he has to learn to be the new Spider-Man for his universe now that Peter is dead.
    Recently he has been "imported" over to the main Marvel 616 universe because the Ultimate comics were ended, but he started in Ultimate Comics as the new Ultimate Spider-Man.

    I think Schlubby Peter Parker is actually OUR Spiderman because when he swings by the Coca Cola billboard, during HIS recap, it actually says "Coca Cola," but it says a different name like Coka Soda with every other Spiderman.

    Took my son to it yesterday and he loved it. I however thought it was a bit slow. Especially 1 day after watching Aquaman where the pacing was on point and had either action or comedy to fill the voids where it may have been needed. As far as animation I may have never seen anything as vibrant. I can’t wait to see it in 4k. I did also love the character development. To the point I kept looking at my son hoping that he’s taking the message in and hopefully applying it to himself. Especially because the story of Spider-man is easily my favorite. Well to end it, I still highly recommend watching it. Love you Kevin, please keep doing what you do, we need more people who are passionate about these beautiful works of fiction that have become so much a part of us that it’s basically in our DNA.

    Spiderverse is possibly the best comic book movie this year. The heart and emotion was so well defined. This is EASILY the best Spiderman, but there are so many parts that grip you, it's a day one 4k Blueray must buy. Spiderverse is in my top comic book movie conversation just need to see it a few more times. The highlight for me was the love letter to NY

    Prowler is basically like a smalltime Black Panther used as a villain which honestly is super, super cool. And if he did have all of Black Panther’s abilities he would be WAY overpowered.

    To answer your question about Prowler, in the mainstream universe (specifically during the Big Time story) Prowler ended up turning over a new leaf, becomes a good guy and actually helps Peter protect his Spider-Man identity by putting on Spider Armor on occasion when Spider-Man and Peter Parker can't possibly be in the same place at the same time. So Miles' uncle becomes Spider-Man kinda and even fights alongside Miles Spidey here and there, which I think is pretty fucking beautiful of an idea especially after seeing their dynamic in this movie.

      This version of Prowler isn't the same Aaron Davis as Miles grew up with as far as I know, he's the original 616 Prowler Aaron Davis who was kind of just a D-List Spidey villain who they tried to make cool for years and never got it right lol I think it's cool they wove Miles into the narrative of a wore out old trash villain and revitalized him (finally)

      I believe OG Prowler MIGHT have been on an incarnation of the Sinister Six, but let's be honest, when it comes to Spidey villains, everyone and their dog has made their own Sinister Six team lol

    Currently Miles is in the main 616 continuity, but it took the reality shattering Secret Wars storyline to retcon and rehash all of marvel canon to make that happen. Miles was one of only a handful of people to survive the destruction of the Ultimate universe. Evil Reed Richards, Jimmy Hudson(Wolverine's Son), and Thor's hammer Mjolnir(Stormbreaker in the MCU).
