Hi, I'm Jace Diehl. Ever wonder how the puppets on The Muppet Show operate? Dave Goelz, The puppeteer for some of the Muppet's most famous characters, shares his insight on how he brings Gonzo, Bunsen and Waldorf to life... all while reacting to impressions of his voices!

It’s crazy that Dave Goelz is the only Muppet performer that has performed on “The Muppet Show” and is STILL performing his characters to this day.
Steve Whitmire should also still be performing, but Disney sucks
That’s what you think. I shouldn’t be mad at Disney for firing Steve, but I’m more glad that most (not all, but most) of his characters get to continue on without him. I guess I’m talking about Steve’s firing now.
@@TheodoreAWatts bro they need to get someone else to do Kermit, cause Matt Vogel ain’t it, hell, get Seth MacFarlane to do it, he does a wayyyy better Kermit voice than Vogel does
I know you didn’t ask, but I don’t have a problem with Matt’s Kermit. Even though I miss Steve’s Kermit, I think Matt is doing a good job at performing the character.
If Disney treated the og guys better Muppets would be ok right now.
You know Goelz is depressed.
Haunted Mansion was the most bored Gonzo ever.
I can't wait to hear Dave once again as Boober Fraggle and Uncle traveling Matt
Yeah. Something tells me he couldn't actually puppeteer them because of his commitment to Disney.
@@yosefdemby8792 Nah it was cause of Covid restrictions. At the time they started filming, vaccines weren't quite out yet. Dave is also higher risk, because he's in his mid 70s and has had multiple surgeries. He's stated that he wished he could've been on set but it was Covid restrictions, and it was filmed in a different country, and so he didn't.
@@meloniwinter226 Besides, there is a photo of Goelz puppeteering Baffi the Fizzgig on the set of "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance".
@@tysargent9647 That was before COVID hit.
Dave must not have been aware, but that first impression was actually from a guy he worked with on Fraggle Rock named Terry Angus!
Bro thinks he can see below the camera 💀
none of us were aware as we only saw the puppet
The Juliet Prowse episode, where the Muppets are performing the song Temptation. Towards the end of the number, after Miss Piggy jumps onto Kermit, you can see Dave Goelz' face underneath the chickens in-between the two frogs.
That’s it exactly! When he mentioned it on the video I straight away came to the comments thinking if no one else had mentioned it, I will! You beat me to it! Regardless, I’m glad someone mentioned it, though! Thanks! 👍
That was actually Eren Ozker underneath the chickens. Dave Goelz had a beard so it wasn't him. It was the Harvey Korman episode in which Goelz's face was accidentally revealed.
Actually I think that's Eren Ozker's face. Dave Goelz's face is visible for about a second near the beginning of Kaye Ballard's closing number.
@@johnrowley5833 There is another episode (S3E15) where Gonzo drives a motorcycle up a ramp and crashes into Statler and Waldorfs Box, you can see Jim through the crack in the box at the bottom center of the screen.
this is genuinely my favorite video to ever exist, this isn’t even a joke, i am being greeted with uncontrollable joy.
My favorite Gonzo scene.
Gonzo - "Hello. Welcome to the muppet Christmas Carol. I am here to tell the story."
Rizzo - "And I'm here for the food."
Gonzo - "My name is Charles Dickens."
Rizzo - "And my name is Rizzo the Rat. Hey wait a second. You're not Charles Dickens."
Gonzo - "I am too."
Rizzo - "No, a blue furry Charles Dickens that hangs out with a rat?"
Gonzo - "Absolutely!"
Rizzo - "Charles Dickens was a 19th century novelist. A genius.
Gonzo - "Oh you are too kind."
Since I was little, my favorite Muppet has always been Gonzo. Mr. Goelz also played Rugby Tiger in "The Christmas Toy".
I love whenever you do these, Jace, and what a treat this was. Dave is such a legend and it was incredible to see his puppetry eye contact tips and that Bobby Moynihan story. Imagine having played so many characters you don’t even remember some all these years later! And of course, your editing and use of archival materials is always first-rate. Hope all is well!
Thanks so much Brian! I’ll catch you on the next Pixar Post live stream 😉😆
@@JaceDiehl Hahaha always!! All the real ones are there!!!!
This was fun! Nice work!
Hey Adam!
Dave Goelz, you are amazing!! Thank you for everything you have done during your career with the Muppets!
I would love this man's commentary track on the entirety of the Muppet Show.
Interesting to hear that Statler & Waldorf wouldn't ad lib and that their banter has to be so precisely crafted. I guess with their dynamic, delivery of the setup & punchline has to be so on point or it doesn't work.
Dave doesn’t ad lib with Waldorf out of respect for Jim, and it not really being his character.
I met Dave before. He’s awesome. Such a nice person. Gonzo is my favorite cuz he made it okay for me to be a weirdo.
Oh Dave - how can you not recognise your fellow Fraggles puppeteer. Terry was doing the Gonzo impersonation in the first clip
Gonzo is my favorite Muppet!
The only regular Muppet performer who has still been performing in the Muppets since the Muppet Show.
Re: Bobby Moynihan, Big Bird was a guest correspondant in one Daily Show segment (the REAL Big Bird), and he showed up for the goodnights at the end. I still remember Bobby Moynihan's face, it's like if a kid saw a Santa Claus do REAL magic. His face was just in total awe. I'm guessing getting to hug the actual Big Bird is one of the big highlights of his life (it would be for me too!)
I love Dave Goelz, and I love hearing all the stories about Jim and the Muppets and what went through bringing them from the beginning to now
It is good to see Dave....he looks good.
How DO you get in touch with such amazing people?!
Also, I'm surprised you didn't ask him about Figment.
Figment? The video game? Was he on it, who did he voiced I'm so curious now
Figment the dragon from Disney@@car2911
Dave is a hero of mine, I absolutely loved his performance as Uncle travelling Matt on Fraggle Rock too. Great interview 👍
Such an amazing interview and I'm sure an even more amazing memory!! Loved this!! 🔥🔥
I would love to see this series done with Sesame street performers!
I met Dave once at a trade show. He was really nice and welcoming. Doesn't hurt that he performs my favorite Muppet characters!
We need a season 2 of prop culture!!!
Great video with good questions :) Shows that you are really interested in this topic and not just randomly ask the usual questions 😁😁
The Muppet Vision 3D show at the Theme parks has a character named Waldo, who was the result of Jim Henson's attempt to create a CGI Muppet, basically by doing motion capture on a puppeteer's hand. I think it might have been Dave's hand being motion captured.
Nope Steve Whitmire
Nope, that wasn't Dave, but rather it was Steve Whitmire whose hand controlled Waldo.
Well, Dave Goelz, I got to watch the entire first season of the Muppet Show three times in order to write my seminar paper about it, and I didn’t notice that goof, so kudos lol
Love this! But I’m confused as to why Dave said there was only one frame with a human face in it because there was a human guest star in every single episode. I think he might have just meant puppeteers’ faces.
he said his face specifically.
That was so great. Just discovered your channel about a week. Watching this was such a treat, I subscribed.
Dave is incredible! I hope to meet him someday.
You should get Steve on.
Dave Goelz is bomb, I love Gonzo
Wow, this was interesting. Thanks!
at 9:10 Dave had an assignment and Already i can tell you. in the very first show and during the last number (Temptation) he was reviled by the end of the musical number.
I had a look and thought It was Harvey Koremans episode 110
Actually I think that's Eren Ozker's face at the end of "Temptation". Dave Goelz's face is visible for about a second near the beginning of Kaye Ballard's closing number.
I love this so much 😂
Good stuff loved the muppets
Brilliant
Bunsen is my favorite
Very well made video
The episode where the pigs took over is my favorite!
I love this movie it’s one of my favourite movies.
Fabulous
I did a song cover as Zoot, but I could never compare with Dave Goelz.
Amazing video!
Sad that Disney felt the need to fire Steve Whitmire & Frank Oz. I'm really glad they kept Dave Goelz.
Disney never fired Frank Oz.
They still have him for Star Wars 😉
They never technically fired him. Frank just doesn’t like how Disney is handling the Muppets. He doesn’t like how they changed their personalities
@@brockpifer9929 Frank Oz said Disney doesn't want him.
@@MarshalGrover They never called him again since he's vocal about how he thinks about the handling of the Muppets
Nice video
Would love to meet Dave
What’s the process of booking guests like Dave?
9:46 - Hey! Waldorf Salad!
Sorry... Waldorf's a Lad!
Muppets go Hollywood.
Something tells me you want me to get Disney+?
Cool
Has anyone found the The episode of the frame that Dave Goelz face is in?
It was the Harvey Korman episode when the end credits begin to roll.

@@LoreleiMission thank you!
Editing is CHOICE
cool,wow,awesome,amazing,epic.
me I loved it.
Staler it was okay Video
Waldorf ' yeah it wasn't too bad.
Me coud been worst
Staler yeah it could been the Muppet show
ho ho ho ho ho.
1:45 Doug Walker needs to hear this part.
Walker's not trying to be a legitimate puppeteer.
What about figment ?
I have the uneasy feeling that Disney will eventually kick Dave to the curb like they did to Steve. I wouldn't put it past them.
Me myself can do many voices Kermit is my #1 request.
😎💜
I do muppet impressions, singing.
8:48 what is Dave goelz talking about?????
Hey I actually made a video of mine called Muppet Impressions you should have him review my Gonzo voice
8:19
...what does he mean their puppets?
Great
Drop the thumb, don't lift the fingers.
No jealous. Nope. Not at all!
I made 6 puppets and talk for 5
my bro and i can do kermit my bro can do gonzo too
It was Disney world 🌍 not Disneyland.
This was wonderful however I hope they seek the internet for a new Kermit or with him
Nope - the new Kermit is SO MUCH better than Nasaly Whitmire.
why does your hair look like you ripped it off of a muppet. great video though
Jace I'm a new fan of this channel. This was a great video! Is there a way I can contact you?
