Simply awesome tutorial on how to do that, I've always avoided doing a coupling found them a pita but with your help I reckon I'd be able to smash one out pretty easily now. Nice! thanks for that great vid!
No dramas mate cheers
You just saved me some money. Thanks mate
No dramas mate 👍
By far the best video on CZcams using the most basic tools thankyou
Thanks mate 👍
Thanks for a great explanation. My mechanic wanted to replace the whole shaft and buy it interstate with all the added costs and labour etc! About $100 for the 3 pce kit on eBay for an old car I love that won't have heaps of k's done on her anymore anyway. I'll be more than a grand up afterwards. Cheers.
Yeah sweet mate 👌 👍
Best Commodore Channel ive seen , great explanations , show tools , sizes and great camera work . Thank you for all your work .
Thanks mate 👍
Cool video matey 👍 im learning how to replace front & rear suspension on my 2004 VY Holden Calais , Im now thinking i should of done mechanical apprenticeship & learnt all the tricks when i was a young pup ! Im 58 & learning as i go & by watching a 1000 videos on VY suspension & from Guys like You 👍🕺 Steve from Bundaberg Qld 🍹🍺 if your ever up this way you're welcome at my joint to give a hand & enjoy a big bbq & drink 🍹😝
G'day Stevo
Great work mate 👍
To lovely a VY Calais 1 of my favorites
Im hoping to rebuild my VR Calais Project but putting a LS1 in it haha and also would be great to catch up for a beer im looking into head that way one day for a Demolition Derby
Take it easy mate Byron 👍
LS1 nice 👍😝@@downtheshedwithbyron
Byron . Absolutely brilliant video mate .
No dramas mate hope all goes well 👍
About to do this with my 2001 wh grange 🎉
Sweet dude 👌
Very very good job 👍👏
Cheers mate 👍
That was a nice simple way 👍
Cheers mate
I got told by a mechanic when you take the driveshaft out to replace uni joints and bearing it has to be rebalanced and they couldn't do it, they recommended I take my car to DBS Drive Train. This looks pretty simple to do, fuck I wish watched this first would've saved myself $900
Great video, this is exactly what i needed to know when i do the vu ute :) cheers
Sweet mate hope all goes well 👍
Another great video Byron
Cheers mate
Great video. I need to do this today or tomorrow so your video helped tremendously.
Great tip about marking the spline before it separates, I would have only marked the shafts.
Oh great 👍 i hope it all goes well
Let me know how you go mate
All done, drives great now,
All went smoothly.
Great video for those who want to tackle it themselves. That exhaust system is the original Holden one & by now it must have a ton of crap in it. Might be a good idea to replace it from the cat back for better performance.
Yeah i try to make the video for everyone, if your in a drive way at mum and dads or in the shop
Ill check out that exhaust
Want to keep it as standard as possible
I’m just gonna dump mine from the flange behind the cat
You know, the also fits (tools) is a nice feature. Of course, enjoy the rest as well, thanks
Thank you so much for this vid. You may have saved me some money, because everyone else is using a vice for this job.
I dont have a vice and talk to a guy about replacement of that bearing after i remove ds from car. 😮😊
Oh sweet bro
@@downtheshedwithbyron ok a vice WAS needed for this task! I absolutely do NOT see how you got this apart with taps of human strength laying freely on boards.
2005 Pontiac GTO here.
@@mikeprice8307 oh bugger
You can ive done another 2 since but ive also had 1 i couldn't get apart
Ive got the 2004 aussie GTO 👍
I thought these had a circlip in there somewhere as well? You made it look easy!!
Yeah these a lock ring at the end which locks into place once the shaft is back together
Cheers for bring that up
Most of the time that will stay there
It looks pretty tight up the e-torx end but here goes.
There all good mate 👍
@@downtheshedwithbyron Got it done. It all went exactly like the video. Thanks heaps!
@@aaronh920 awesome mate
I replaced the whole shaft recently at the mechanics. He refused to replaced the bearing so I had no choice.
However, I bought a bearing and dismantled the old shaft and replaced the bearing. It took about an hour so don't be discouraged at the task. The issue is, if you bugger the shaft, you are up for over a grand for a new genuine shaft..IF you can find one!
Yeah mate i was doing another one the other day but i couldn't get it apart to save my life had to get another one haha
@@downtheshedwithbyron ,, yep theres a reason for that as the universal joints are not availble to replace them as they are a pressed in type of deal from tne factory and are only a one time use and and not seviceable. Well uni wise at least haha. I thought I had a uni let go on me one day in my vz sv8 I have here and got a terrible wobble and crunching sound to it so i took it home and jacked it up and had a look at under it and couldn't see anything wrong with it and put pressure on the unis and no movement so let the jacks down and took it back out for a drive and it was fine so im stuffed if i know what the go with it that day but it got me into me chasing up parts as to how i found out there not servicable and a one time use. Hope this helps...
Cheers from John.
Yeah mate i found that out as will what a pain
On our vx calais im chase a small vibration which is doing my head in tail shaft balanced another shaft fitted to try that but nope still the same my next thing to check is the drive shafts from diff to hub check cv joints arrrr haha
Hopefully i can get it sorted
is the rubber dohnut between the drive shaft and the gear box supposed to sit flush when tightened up??
It should do
flange face to rubber
Can i ask why you put all the rear bolts in facing the same way? I thought the arrows on the rubber are the direction the bolts are to be put in?the arrows on the couplings i have are one arrow forward then the next is the opposite direction. Does it not really matter? Can the bolts and nuts just go either way at the front as long as they alternate each hole????? Thanks
Thats a great pick up mate
Ummm not 100% sure sorry haven't had a drama with them yet
Cheers for that i might do some research
Oarsum and very informative video you have put out for js to watch and learn from thankyou.
Question for you , or anyone else out there that may know.
I have a 2004 SV8 VZ and have been told that the V6 tailshafts and the V8's are the same tailshaft. I know the donuts and the centre bearings all seem to be the same but not sure if the actual shafts are the same ie thickness and length etc.
If anyone can confirm if this is true or not that would be awesome.
Cheers and thanks in advance from John.
Thanks mate
Thats a good question mate maybe we could find out the part number for the assembly and see or give a drive shaft shop a call
With the newton meters, are you actually using a Torque Wrench or just tightening till it doesn't move?
Gday mate
Are you talk about the centre bearing bolts or rubber couple bolts
@@downtheshedwithbyron the coupling
Morning mate
The centre bearing bolts to floor are 20 to 35Nm
And the 3 bolts for the coupling 105 to 125Nm
Hope this helps you out mate 👍
Excellent video . Unfortunately i cant do it due to unlevel ground surface...so have had to get a mechanic to replace centre bearing on a VX V6 AUTO . No donuts replaced ..now it still has a wobble like it did before .. have you had any ballance issues with any of your tailshafts ..etc
Yes and no
The problem i had before was not lining up the marks i put on and thats why i made the video
Was you centre bearing stuffed?
Checked engine/gear box mount?
Have you try rotation or swapping the wheels?
@downtheshedwithbyron .....tranny mount I replaced not long ago ... tyres are . I'm ashamed to say are out of the 10 year date , still plenty of tread but perished due to not driving as much .. another family member with a vz v6 had same bearing go on tailshaft and had same mechanic replace bearing with same result a wobble and shake at low speeds ..his tyres are close to new ..no tranny mount issues ... I think the mechanic has not properly aligned drive shaft etc
@@pB-ox3qr probably get the shaft balanced thats cost me about $200 for pieces of mind
@downtheshedwithbyron will do ...people think no big deal ...but when you think of it ..not exactly to good on tranny . Slapping around etc ...
Took me a moment but just realised it was you. I’m a mate of Graeme A from high school. Nice video mate. I’m looking to do something similar on my Ford Territory. You got a workshop in Adelaide?
Gday mate
Thanks
Nah im over in WA
Getting the shaft onto the transmission and rear yoke is a nightmare did you struggle with that?
I didnt but i understand what your saying thats why i give that area a spray with wd40
Great video. Quick question, can the uni joint in these be replaced?
Yeah mate
But i didnt look at how to
I just checked it
Im pulling the 1 out of the calais project this week ill have a better look
@@downtheshedwithbyron Will be good to know. My cousin got told they can't be repaired by a Holden place. We're chicks so tend to get lied to A LOT. Thanks for reply.
@@belindahameister5977 i get off night shift tomorrow
Ill get into it as asap
Let you know when ive got it out
Hey the uni can be replaced if you paid to get it machined out so better of buying a new or second hand shaft
Sorry about that news
Take it easy Byron
@@downtheshedwithbyron Thanks heaps for taking a look for us. Appreciate all you do.
I'm just putting my centre bearing on. Not sure I've done it properly. I did yr way bashing it back on using new cover but it's bit stiff when I go to spin it😂
It should free up
love this video but be real careful about spraying wd40 on new bearings. It seeps in and strips the grease inside and munts the bearing (even a sealed bearing). Personal experience. It's only a temp fix for seized bearings.
Oh right cool tip
Ah mate good video is a commodore wagon the same as sedan??
Gday mate it should be the same process
Great video helped when I was going to do the job...
But when I went to do it couldn't get the tailshaft out of the diff...
Ended up wrapping the chain of a 500kg come along around the gearbox end of the tailshaft up to the engine cross member and finally got the tailshaft out of the diff but remember to leave the bolts in the tailshaft finger tight so it doesn't drop down on you...
Hope this helps for anyone who has the same problem I had
Cheers Mick
Gday mate
Yeah great tip some are hard to get out
Did you get it sorted
Yeah it ended up pulling the brass bush out of the tailshaft it was well and truly seized on had to get a small pipe wrench on it two spin it on the spigot before using a two jaw gear puller to get it off...
The good thing is if that happens the brass bush can be reseated in the tailshaft as the rubber part of the bushing on the tailshaft side of bush was still intact and had the seat the brass bush sat in in fair condition so I just pushed it back in till seated and then reposition the rubber part of the seal from the diff side back in place ready for re fitting of the tailshaft...
Wish I could upload the photos I took of the set up with the come along and of the seized brass bush...
Cheers Mick 👍😁👍
Oh sweet bro
Maybe jump on the facebook page and find the tail shaft video i shared and post it on there so others can see
Also found that my Repco tie rod remover was able to hook on the old centre bearing and removed it with that no bashing with the chisel 👍😁👍
Oh awesome yeah that would make it easyer
Good video bud... I had a vx Calais V8 I pulled shaft out and sent off to get centre bearing done. And a VY v6.
V6 went to hardy spicer who fucked me for money. I brought the shaft to them. They said...
"if we go to separate and the internal circlip doesn't break we still charge you $600, and you'll have to get another tail shaft from a, wrecker and pay again."
What sort of mother fuckers do this to a person. It's bullshit. I knew no better. And fuck how much labour are ya charging someone ay??? $600 for an uncompleted job and a 'sorry' pay again.
I think if they told me it didn't come apart I might of had an episode like the mask and someone there might of had a tail shaft jammed up their clack they balanced the shaft too for the price
That shaft circlip like where is it on reinstall in your vid? Does it not have one at all???
Then there's the VX. I paid a group in Sydneys condell Park who balanced it too. I'm not sure if it was their balancing. Or what the fuck. That car had a strange vibration that ended up have me sell the fucking car.
Coz I changed. The diff mount the centre bearing. The auto trans mount. All myself. I didn't change the couplings so might of been them and I was fully aware they can vibrate.
I did engine mounts myself. Rear cradle bushes. There was nothing left to change except the steering coupling on rack shaft.
And the fucking doughnut rubber spider couplings. I bet it was them I'll never know for sure.
But the shakiness really fucked the driving experience. It was only at certain speeds.
You Could feel it under floor pan under drivers and passengers seat.
I was always driving putting my hand on the back floor well where the tail shaft goes and trying to pin point for sure...
It Couold of only been so many things. But NO ONE at all u took to could help or diagnose it.
Several mechanics round the place. Such a shame coz the rest of car was in great condition. But that's one thing I just never got resolved.
It was so shit. It was a consistent vibration that came at about 85km - 140km once you hit high enough speed it somehow balanced out of course.
But it fucked the cruising pleasure big time... It just didn't feel smooth.
It wasn't rims and tyres but it even gave some slight impression it wasn't just under floor pan and was in steering when it just can't of been...
And this thump in centre bearing on deceleration is what got me onto doing centre bearing. I knew what they did from trade experience etc.
So either the guys who did centre bearing fucked it. Rubbers might of been it but only had slightest perishing cracks. However an expert somewhere told me. Like craigs autos...
When they show slightest cracks just change them spider coupling rubbers they don't have to have much flex to put a serious enough noticeable vibration in driveline.
Anyone else have this frustrating experience and problem with a suspect vibration that show up as feedback in steering when it's clearly under floor and can be felt as a vibration in driveline?
Like believe me I did everything! Expect the couplings and except the steering uni joint to rack...
Even had Bridgestone check their tyres out under warranty and have them admit one was at its limit of frequencies that can cause balance issues/out of round checks...
Rims and tyres actually balanced up good elsewhere like pedders. I'd changed rims and tyres several times to clear it of out of round issues and deviations in rims.
It was so shit as a reason to of sold car. As well as sams performance doing a shit tune and auto shifts sucked.
Oh bugger mate that sucks
Out of maybe 10 ive done ive only stuffed 1 up
I guess with your drama it could of been easier to change the shaft over with a mates to see if the problem cleaned before replacing every thing
Sorry to hear about this dude
What happens in the shed stays in the shed 😅
Haha gold 🤣
Hammering the driveshaft back together but it won’t budge, just about a bees dick off being on properly, any tips?
Hey mate
Ummm pull it apart again check that these nothing stupid stopping it just i case put abit of lube on it and try again
