One more basic sound processor that should always be used in post-production is compressor/limiter. That makes the voice much more pleasant for listener and helps to level up inconsistencies in your voice and in recording levels.
Yes, for sure! I have been meaning to do a tutorial on that.
Oh yes please. Even huge channels still don't use compressor/limiter and it is annoying when watching it with speakers.
Agreed. Limiter/compression/de-esser can be applied in OBS as well. For those that are streaming.
Good One
I know your comment is 2yrs old, but what are some brands of compressors do you use?@@markwiemels
i just picked this up today...and it is incredible...i recently broke my wireless microphone and needed something in the meantime..so this one was perfect...$55 and works right out of the box...the advice here is much appreciated coz i wasn't thinking of turning the mike around if i was shooting front and speaking from behind...mighty thanks for that point mentioned...god bless...
Other videos I’ve seen about this mic, 🎙 just complain about the quality, and you’ve just told me how to improve the quality with actual tips, I love it 🙏 thanks so much! you have a new subscriber today! 🤘
Merry Christmas 🎄
It really is one of the best Mic's for the size and price, it's hard for me to get my head around people complaining about it, it's such a high quality microphone.
I've had one of these microphones for a few years and I still can't believe how good it is, especially given its size and price. One of the real bargains in the recording world!
For sure!
Is it good for outside recording?
Thanks a lot for this. I do a lot of my videos outdoors, and have found wind noise to be a real problem. I look forward to trying your tips out and seeing what difference it makes!
Don't take the muff off in the wind, that's for sure. Try using an EQ and cutting out the low frequencies. Try cutting 50-120 rage and see how you go.
I've been a silent viewer for a while but I had to say something. This video is genuinely amazing. Why? It's just a microphone tips and tricks right? Well, yes but the way you put yourself forward and explain concepts in such an elegant way makes me appreciate spending time on your channel. Thank you for making videos, looking forward to being a long-term follower : )
Super kind of you to share this, thank you.
For the past couple years, I've mostly used a Rode Lavalier mic ($60) for Zoom and other teleconferences and for some light office home video. I just upgraded to a highly rated full size USB-C condensor mic, a NEOM. ALong the way, I dug my out rarely used MOVO VXR10 and discovered how good it is as a studio mic. At two ounces, I can just clamp it on an overhead extension arm desk lamp. I also discovered I have a RODE Videomicro (way at the bottom of my box) which also works very well and seems to have less baseline humm than the MOVO. In short, I completely agree with this video.
Yah, these little mics can provide great results.
Great video. I was on the fence on this microphone based on some reviews. Your video covered just what one needs to know without lots of fluff (except the part about the dead cat). Thanks for making this video and for keeping it simple.
Thanks, you will be very happy, it's a quality mic.
Thank you so much for this. I recently bought this microphone and was disappointed to find out there was so much background noise in the recording that I couldn't believe that a Rode mix would be defective. With the manual setting of Sound on the camera, I was able to sort that issue out. Yayy!! 😀
Great to hear!
Absolutely brilliant, muito obrigado amigo
Thanks!
Excellent advice Mark. We'll be applying your tips to our rode and canon 5d mark ii set up. Thank you!
DUDE!!! This video saved me money!!! I was gonna go and buy a way more expensive microphone and then I saw this and wanted to try the tips first and holy moly is it way better. I appreciate you so much...new sub!!!
So good to hear! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for this information! Seems silly of me not to realise before, but with the mic being on top of the camera wasn’t close enough to me which was a real pain in noisy environments like restaurants. I’ll definitely give these tips a go in my next travel vlog!
Yeah, I hadn’t work it out until someone told me either.
Thank you this is so helpful. I just bought one a couple of weeks ago and I'm learning from videos like this
Great to hear!
Thank you for all the advice.
Mark, Thank you so much for these infos ! I just bought the Rode Video Micro and i am trying it for the first time tomorrow, after watching your video I've got a clear idea on how to start testing it to find the kind of sound i like ! cheers :))
Excellent! Thanks.
Really good information and great delivery. The Sound on the Rode VideoMicro is great. This setup really does require keeping a consistent distance from the microphone, so not to overload the volume settings. Once of the reasons the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus or the Rode VideoMic NTG is nice is because it has a safety channel just in case you accidently get loud you still can get clean audio from the other channel.
I do find that some cameras have very noisy capacitors, so if you are not running the camera a minimum volume and cranking the microphone at the source you will continue to have background hiss to the recording. I use a Rode VideoMic Pro Plus into an M50 where the M50 is at a minimum volume and I adjust the volume on the microphone to get the right volume and if I adjust the volume on the camera and lower the volume on the microphone then I will start to get background hiss.
FYI. I did have an issue where I accidently lefty the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus plugged into power which cause a ground loop and horrible sound. At that point I had to pull audio from another camera, so having a second source of audio is always nice especially if it is a recording you can't redo. If you are using powered cameras be aware of this sort of issue.
Good information. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent video, thank you!
Nice tips. Thank you.
Fantastic tips for improving audio clarity with my Rode VideoMicro.
Glad it was helpful!
Such a clear video! Thanks for the info
Wow the audio is great!

I've been figuring out microphones for a week now, watching countless videos. And you're the only channel I subbed to. Keep up the great work!
Awesome, thank you!
I like this one
Thank you for sharing your tips. This will for sure help me record better audio!
Glad to hear it!
Your video is crispy with great color and your sound is spot on (specially the sound of the steeping tea.) I have a micro but never thought about using it off of my camera. I’m gonna give it a shot. I subbed for more content like this.
Thanks, I think you will be very happy with the results.
Thank you
Some great advice! I love this little microphone
It really is soo good!
Awesome and informative video. I invested in a Røde Video Micro this year and using that mic alone. I am still learning to use this mic but it is great for its price and works well with my needs
It's a great mic!
This video was awesome! I have the video micro rode and I always struggle to eliminate the static sound in the background. Even in the editing process but I think this will help thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
❤️Indeed your sound is impressive with that mic. Very helpful tips!! Thanks Mark!👍
Thanks.

Thank you for that really interesting vidéo 😊
That was really great. Thanks

Another pro tip is to record when total silent if possible. This way noise can be digitally removed afterwards to give you a 99% clean recording.
Because of operating Strictly Solo, i have Deity D4 Duo shotgun mike mounted atop Canon Vixia HF-G50. Have not encountered any significant audio issues. Thanx for these tips/pointers, tho....
Which camera did you use to record this video, this is sooo nice! Pls let me know🙏
Super helpful video, thanks for posting. :-) I have ordered a longer lead to move the mic closer.
Good to hear.
i liked the ideea of tunning sound and get voice to sound like more expensive mics. thanks for sharing!

No problem!

Very helpful I have that mic. Never used it though.
Great Video, thank you and useful info. 📸🎙🎙🎙🎙
Thanks for this video 🤘🏻🔥

Great tips! Can you achieve the same results with the mic out of the video frame? Would the sound quality decrease a lot for not being as close? Or what mic would you recommend out of frame on like a boom arm?
Which microphone would you recommend to use for outdoor concert where the music is extremely loud? Rode mic go II did struggle with me . Thank you
Great video. Very informative thank you.
Very welcome
Great video especially on the audio level adjustment. I purchased recently a Rode video micro 2. I love the sound quality. However when I use it on my mirrorless camera, it picks up the AF noise of my lens. Now I know people recommended STM lens, or remove the mic on the camera, but is there a solution using my lens and mounting it on the camera?
thank you very helpfull!!!
You are most welcome.
I am sooo glad that you made this video. I watch videos about audio and video gear almost religiously. I have seen in passing, about five different videos somewhat complaining about shortcomings of this microphone that don't actually exist. Everything that they are doing is wrong. It is so bad that one 'reviewer' was saying it had low output levels, but did not know how to adjust his input level in his camera. I was just complaining about one of these videos to my wife last night. I know the mic sounds great for it's price because I own one. I really feel like you should at least have a basic knowledge about audio before you post videos as a 'reviewer'. Anyhow, at least you came up on my feed to calm my frustration. Make more videos.
haha... Thanks!
Also love to see that logic eq lmao 🙌🏼
Hello Mark. Thanks for this video. It’s really helpful. Have a qs, hope you can answer. I shoot my videos on iPhone 12 and now looking to use the rode video micro go for better sound. I understand that I need a rode sc7 cable and a 3.5mm to lightening adapter for videomicro to work with iPhone however the videomicro will be at some distance from me as the sc7 cable is not long. How can I bring the mic closer, ie is there a workaround? I want to have the mic as close to my mouth as possible but the trs to trss cable that I’ve looked at are all same length. Faisal
Just need a TRRS extension cable.
@@markwiemels ah ok. Simple enough! Thanks Mark.
I've been looking for such simple explanation for 6 months!

Thank you very much for sharing. I am this mic with the dongle for my IPhone for vidrecoding a gig on the street. Is there any way to optimize the sounds? I hear more sounds from the street than my voice. Your advice would be super helpful !
You are so good, thank you!
haha... thank you, doing my best anyways.
@@markwiemels You are welcome!
Thx for another timely video. Im finding your m50 videos terrifically helpful, informative and entertaining. 👏👏👏
I recently purchased the RodeVM (had i not been pressed for time I would have used your affiliate link) and I used it to film theatre showings of my HS senior. The audio from the RVM is excellent and along with purchasing the Canon 22mm f/2 and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 the videos came out terrific. In this particular video
czcams.com/video/fGagPuKeg28/video.html
it was necessary to deviate from the RVM audio track and switch to the in-camera mic at minute 01:49 and though the RVM is certainly better; I think the m50 mic isn’t too bad at all. Fyi, i did leave the dead cat on to reduce crowd and pit band noise.
The first weekend of shows I filmed with the 22mm and purchased the 56mm for the second weekend. I am very pleased with the 56mm footage. Its been a steep learning curve working out the VSDC editing software but certainly worth the effort.
Thx again Mark for the terrific videos.
Thanks! That's great to hear.
That footage is fantastic, well done!
@@markwiemels thx for checking out the video. The images are straight out of the camera using the auto+ setting.

Great video (and naturally even better audio ;)
Once I tried to make an exagerrated deep narration voice in my drone video, but I just made it with my voice and not with effects ;) and failed. Recently I bought the sennheiser mke200 for its compactness and the Sony ezg1 or similar name (the one with digi hotshoe interface). Thanks, greets, Mario

Hello Mark! I only have a lavalier rode mic. and when i connect it to my Android phone don't really see any difference. Do you think that this mic. gives the same quality if connected to an Android or iPhone as when connected to the camera? Grateful in advance for your time anda answer 😊
This will be better than a lav mic, the bigger mic casuals will generally sound better.
Good tips
Thanks
Can you please recheck your link of the extension cable? On Amazon it says that it is NOT made for audio signals!
Great video
Thanks!
So useful thank you - is there an option for manual mic on the iphone?
I'm not sure, but maybe with a special program like filmic pro or similar.
Is there a way to put an extension cable on the Lightning version of this mic?
Great video! Thanks for sharing! Suscribed!!!
Thank you!
Hey i noticed you changed the url for the cable, will any aux cable work?
How to manually adjust the audio settings in the ZV E10 for handling that gain issue for white noise? The settings are a little different than the Canon.
great video
Thanks!
Thank you for this video! Even implementing all these tips (which have helped), I'm still getting a static buzzing sound in the background of my videos, and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any advice? 😩
This is so hard to diagnose in a comment, but I'll try. Three things I would look at,, first is the cable, (1) is it plugged in properly (pushed all the way in) (2) is it the right cable, the cable that came with the mic is made for a camera, not a computer or phone (3) is the cable faulty, try another cable. After that it could be just bad pre-amps in the camera, or a faulty mic.
@@markwiemels ah, it very well could be the cord. I have been using a longer one that I bought separately so I could put the mic closer to me, but I'll try the original cord to see if the buzzing goes away. thank you so much for your reply!

Mark how much of a sound difference to use Rode VIdeoMicro Me-L that plugs in lightning port of iPhone 13 pro? Some saying you will have a much better quality using one you got with the adaptor. Does it make that much of a difference? Thanks Mark tech man!
Hi Mark, I appreciate this information and I wanted an affordable microphone for my new CZcams effort..on a budget. I subscribed. Cheers from British Columbia
Great to hear!
I have a rode video mic pro, but great video overall!
Thanks, same principals!
Thanks so much for these great tips. I was actually considering connecting this mic right into the laptop for simple video tutorials. There's apparently a simple mixer that can make it work. Thanks! - Dane
Just need a diffrent cable, TRS to TRRS cable.
@@markwiemels ooooh thanks very much good call. I assume you mean male to male, and that the TRRS goes in my MacBook Pro? Thanks again! - Dane
Oh I see what you're saying. Male to male. Thanks! - Dane
@@VidActionTV Yes.
Cheers for making this video! I recently upgraded my video setup, to the Sony ZV E-10, and needed a good mic. I ended up getting the Røde Videomic Pro+, but I'm happy to see that the Micro can produce some nice material as well. I was looking at that one first, but decided to go a little higher, in terms of price.
As you also mention, the post-processing is key, and a little compression and EQ, will go a long way, and greatly improve the overall sound quality.
That's mainly what I tend to do, when recording voice, etc.
Thanks for the video.
Have a jolly Christmas-time.
Cheers.
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too.
Thank you. This helped. I’m struggling with the hiss sound. Only happens when I use a 12 foot trs to trrs cord (I’m using a video micro and iPhone combo)
Any ideas or apps I could use to adjust the audio settings for iPhone?
Thanks again
For hiss, you need to record in full silence, remove the noise using the "silence"
Great tips Mark 👍🏻 I have now the rode micro and I will try it out 😉👍🏻 best cinematic greetings from a small german CZcams filmmaker 😂
Great! nice to hear from you.
great video, about to start using this mic now... sound tests have been great. One issue for me, does anyone here use it with the ZV-1 and find that the huge dead cat sneaks into the frame? Trying to figure out if I can pull it back with something or need to shave the dead cat lol
Sir Could you be so kind to research what type of directional internal microphone is factory equipped on the Sony ax43 / ax53
I really wouldn’t know where to start. I don’t even know those mics.
This is the best video I've seen done on this mic so I'll ask the question here. Would you think I could use this mic with a longer cable and run it straight into a switcher? Blackmagic ATEM Mini switcher if you are familiar with it. Would a longer cable work at all?
Yes, as long at the unit take a TRS input, it will be fine.
@@markwiemels thanks for the answer, very helpful. I'll check if it works in couple of days
When you talk about speaking behind a camera / handycam companies should have put a switch in there so we could switch to omnidirectional or a pop-up microphone you can swivel backwards 🤟
Thanks for your complete explanation about VideoMicro. I have a question for you: can you suggest me a cable to connect Rode VideoMicro with smartphone with Jack 3.5mm? The on on the box isn't suitable for smartphone. Thanks for your reply.
You need a TRS to TRRS adapter, or cable, easy to find on Amazon or e-bay.
@@markwiemels thannk, i found one on amazon, i'll tried it when i'll receive.
Great video! Did U use an adapter to attach the mic to the boom arm!?! I couldn’t tell 😅 thanks!
It should just thread on the the end of the stand.
Hello Mark,
I am using my camera with the Boya mic to record stage performances (mostly singing and music in the background) for my kids in school auditorium. Is there a video you made specifically about this usage?
Just get your audio levels right in the camera, and with the Boya, watch out for handling noise.
