after watching 25 videos on mics, this video finally does it for me, the presenter is extremely intelligent about what will help the viewer. God bless!
The only video anyone ever needs on audio. Thank you for all this hard work and well thought out information.
Appreciate it!
For real, going in to this video I knew 0 about mics. This really explained EVERYTHING I need to know to make a choice on what to look for and buy 👏🏼
@@roastme2079 now you're showing off. 🤣
@@MrPaulXavierHey Paul, how can I get the audio from my advanced shotgun/boom mic into my iPhone 13/14?
@@roastme2079 You're not wrong, I too believe in getting the best you can possibly afford... well, up to the point where the benefits are noticeable over the alternatives at least.
This helped me so much! As someone who is completely new to the audio side of filming, I walked away feeling WAY more comfortable with audio than before. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
It's worth noting that on-camera mics are generally just for reference and syncing; they're not meant to be used. Thx for the great content!
Incredible video! I used to use Rode shotgun mics for vlogging. But I changed to a wireless lav mic and never looked back! Bonus benefit is no one thinks I’m some local news reporter. For some reason that’s what people think when they see a shotgun mic with a deadcat/windshield.
Love it!
The controversy remains - when a budding police state routinely arrests photographers and photojournalists alike for recording in public. The courts have a strong consensus with the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit that "held that a private citizen has the right to record video and audio of [officials] carrying out their duties in a public place, and that the arrest of the citizen for a wiretapping violation violated his First and Fourth Amendment rights". Glik v. Cunniffe, 655 F.3d 78 (1st Cir. 2011).
As a photojournalist the mic flag (or logo cube) just might save you a busted head or worse. Many of my 'independent' journalist associates can attest to spending a night or two in torture cuffs from malicious prosecution - only to have all charges dropped for lack of standing. Supporting a often abused cop idiom, "You may beat the rap, but not the rid". Many journalists reporting it can take several months or even years to get recording equipment back from unlawful arrests and illegal detainment. Chilling of free press and free speech has unfortunately become common everyday interactions with police.
‘We lock up a higher percentage of our people than any other nation on earth’. - Chase Madar, professor of law at NYU.
😂😂😂😂😂True. They think you're a news reporter 😂
Thaaaaaaaaaank you!!!! I bow down for finally one video that helps instead of thousands without context!
Thank you sooooo much. Yes! I made the mistake of buying a shotgun mic right off the bat and it created issues when I was shooting a sizzle reel for a script I wrote. I am now going through the same process and started digging around online. That's when I discovered your channel! Thank you so much again! I'm obviously close. I now have a Sennheiser shotgun and digital recorder. The Lavs are what I was missing.... and the wireless DJI. This video has got me amped up and helped me realize that I am not going to have the problems created on my first run. I have the ideas, now I have know what I need! Again! Thank you so much!
For a very long time that I'm looking and researching for the mic I should buy for my vlog. This is the only VLOG that helps me. Kudos!
same, seen tons of videos, wish had seen this one as the very first one! ❤ perfect order and im very thankful that you mentioned tech & recording functionalities clarifying if there is postproduction needed such as sync of tone with picture, preamp aswell as including sound quality & price comperence. Great work!
i started with an On-Camera shotgun mic for my mirrorless camera but now I'm picking up the dji wireless lav mic to go with it to get more "personal" Audio. really appreciate the knowledge you're dropping here. Subbed!
I love how on top of the great tutorial he linked the mentioned equipment in the bio. So helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
The most detailed video on microphone. Loved the dedication to let people know what they are going to want even though it may sound too technical. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate that!
Wow you made mics super easy to understand. I watched a couple other videos on mics before yours and was starting to feel really overwhelmed with all of the options and my lack of understanding of them. after watching your video, I feel like I have a good understanding of mics and can make my decision on which I need. THANK YOU! My search for mics ended here!
These are the best comments to read, thanks so much and glad it helped!
This was by far the best way to explain sounds differences! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
This is like super clear and simple to understand. Good work in making this! Cheers!
This was everything I needed. Thank you!
I have watched tons of vids on microphones. This by far has been the most comprehensive and helped me make excellent decisions on what I need for my type of presentations. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Boy, if not the best, then one the best comprehensive, videos on this subject. Thank you so much, I’m in the market for a mic, your videos had helped me understand and make a better choice. Thanks.
I'm a newby and had a few questions leading up to a purchase of a mic for my DSLR and you answered ALL of them. Excellent presentation!!!
Thank You.

Thx Anthony. I love how your instruction gets you into the basic info quickly and on to the next thing quickly. It's what sets you apart in this "too much information age". I often get back to your stuff after learning from many others and quickly think "man I shoulda started with Anthony. I woulda progressed so much quicker."
Seen so many videos on microphones, this is the by the best; learnt so much in just 22.53 minutes; thank you 🙏🏽

Awesome. I knew barely anything about mics. Now i know enough to get started! Thank you
Great to hear!
As a professional sound mixer/recordist for the past 30 years, I had to watch your video. And, for the most part, you got a lot of it correct. There are a few nuisances that I could argue, but for the beginner who thinks audio is a mystery, your video works.
I recently bought myself a Canon R7 for a video project that I will be shooting (you don't spend 30 years working in video production and not learn a few things from the other departments). So when it came time to outfit the camera with an audio kit, I only pulled a couple things from my Sound Devices/Lectrosonics/Sanken/Schoeps/Sennheiser based pro kit. That stuff is all amazing and top of the line, very expensive audio recording gear. It has been developed for use in my audio bag and a majority of it is either too big to be used around the small camera kit I was putting together or it couldn't be powered by the camera without adding all sorts of extra parts. Yeah, I could have adapted either my Schoeps CMC6/41 or even my Sanken CS-1e boom mics to be on top of the camera, but there are several cheaper, smaller and lighter options. The one I chose to go with is the Rode VideoMic NTG. Its based off of the broadcast line of Rode NTG mics, but in a smaller format with internal power. I was hoping that Rode had built into this mic some of the same quality that they have put into their bigger NTG line up of mics. And I was very pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of this small shotgun mic. It also has the more directional polar pattern that I was looking for. Many of these mics that "look" like a shotgun mic are in fact stereo mics. And that's not what I was looking for, I wanted a mic that had a bit more reach. The Rode VideoMic NTG is a bit more expensive that the other Rode options at $249, but I think its the best in this class of mics.
I'm pairing that with the Rode VideoMic GO II as a wireless system. They are an excellent small and relatively cheap wireless system. Just add in a couple lav mics taken from my Sennheiser G3 and G4 kits and they are good to go. The sound they produce is shockingly good. I 'm not gonna replace my Lectrosonics systems with them, but they offer something that those $5000 systems cant offer, a very small size and almost zero weight penalty.
And then my deep backup with be a Tentacle Sync Track E recorder. Its a super small and very simple audio recorder that you can feed time code to so that it will be sync'd to a camera or other recorder. There are no external buttons on the small case other than the on/off button. There is not setting the levels of the recorder either as it uses the 32bit floating point format. Take a look at these recorders, amazing systems for when you're out of reach of a regular wireless system or can't bring the whole audio bag. the problem is, they are not cheap. At about $460 for a single unit, they aren't on a lot of non-professional's lists. But compared to a Lectrosonics PDR, they suddenly seem very reasonable. Take look at them on Amazon. They are German made. And from a really great company.
Thank you, this was very helpful.
This video was SUPER helpful. Thank you 🙏🏼
Very useful info! Thank you!!
My pleasure!
Thank you. To the point. Vast array of gear to learn on. I threw in the towel when I got serious PTSD in 1996/7. Laid me low for the rest of my life it seems. Add Covid-19 and pneumonia with a record 120 stay in the Queens Theatre, Romford a 5 week coma and a 3 week coma that left me with a black hole of a memory that makes 1986 to now a walk in the park and YOUR stories had me smiling largely.
All my gear is Nikon.Treated room. Wacom 5 Medium Tablet. I will be signing up to learn it all, again. Photography and Videography makes the heart sing. It’s been a while I learn I have the fun the fun of physio to learn to walk again. Covid was a BiT±H. Now I have a light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks.
This is GOLD! Thanks for making it. Much love
