As you guys know, a couple of months ago I decided to invest in my CZcams channel by improving my audio quality with the Rode VideoMicro. Now, this is one of their more affordable and honestly cheaper mics. So I was curious, is the pricey mic worth the investment?! Will it really improve your audio quality that much. Now, I should note that I'm not a tech person. I'm just a CZcamsr who wants to know what's the best equipment for creating CZcams videos. So in this video, I share my thoughts, do an audio test indoors and outdoors, and ultimately, I want you guys to tell me if you think it's worth the price! - XO, Cathrin
**this video was not sponsored by Rode but the VideoMic Pro+ was gifted to me.

Thanks, because I was just fumbling arround between her enormous amount of words
Many thanks

Thank sir
Girl I love you. I am at 57k subs. When I get to 100k I am planning on upgrading and these videos are so helpful. Thank you. Don't ever change this authenticity when you get famous.
Neo KirchBaby you’ll get to 100k soon! Keep it up!
You did it! Congrats!
There is a big difference between the built-in mike and the Rode Micro. I didn't find a lot of difference between the Micro and Micro Pro +. The price difference is quite significant, I will go with the cheaper option as it's my first mike.
The -10db would be used for things like if you are at a concert and aren't wanting to blow out the audio. The +20db might be used when you are alone in a room or at a place where you have to be quiet (like a library) and need it to pick up softer spoken conversation :) Great video though. I've been looking at the VideoMicro for a GoPro setup so think that's the way to go for sure!
What would be better for recording sounds at night in the rain ? Please answer
Holy moly, how do you find time to breathe between words?
The power of editing helps with removing breaths and pauses between sentences.
I'm a new youtuber and I started having anxiety watching her talk because I don't see her taking a breath and the jump cuts are pretty extreme and not natural feeling.
breathing is edited out
Tiring to watch
🤣🤣🤣
You spoke the truth.
I started out with my phone and most recently I just got a Canon M50 (I just shared an unboxing video of that).
Starting our requires basic gears until you know for sure what exactly you need.
Yes, I got a rode mic.
💝
From a Nigerian 🇳🇬 CZcamsr
Chief Vera that’s the same camera I use I love it!
Thank you for this video. I was literally so confused on which mic to get as I'm ready to upgrade my sound quality! I'm going with the VideoMicro!
And hase it been any good?
@@SandervkHistory I have been using it for about 10 months now and its fantastic! Totally recommend it!
Must say I couldn’t hear a difference between the two external mic’s. Thanks for the video
Same here
She also didn’t use the features like Hz control that eliminate background noise.
@@BrilliantBuffoons This goes probably for most expensive tech: it's not necessarily better if you don't know how to use it and make use of its features.
An expensive high quality camera won't necessarily make nicer pictures on full-auto compared to an entry level camera. Same goes for a lot of tech.
I have the 70 dollar mic it works great 👍🏾
And my mom has the 300 dollar mic works almost the same but runs off battery’s lol
Thank you Cathrin. After a career in radio, I know a fair bit about sound quality. Your presentation style and the way you put the technical info over in a human way, impress me very much. May the Universe bless you. Thanks for the info!
Cath, you're the best ever! I've been brainstorming about sound on my content and researching microphones these last few days and you couldn't have posted at a better time. You're worth your weight in gold!
Bee Varga The Hulahooper yes this video came in clutch!
I sort of jumped off the deep end when starting our new family travel vlog and purchased the Pro+ without knowing anything about audio.😱 Thankfully, like you, I found some good tutorials on CZcams and now I love the mic.😀 That said, I would push a newbie to the VideoMicro. There's no need to go crazy on the upfront costs. I fully agree with you that the Pro+ is a large mic, and not very discrete while vlogging out in public although the audio is amazing!
By the way, I'm looking forward to your TubeBuddy Livestream!!
Cathrin, this video was so helpful in making the decision of purchasing a mic. I'm just starting out so I'm trying to purchase the gear that I really need and this is defiantly one of them!
Cheers!
This was so informative! I have been thinking about getting a mic for awhile but wasn't sure if I should upgrade my camera first but I think I'm gonna take the leap and get it! Yes, CZcams is a visual medium, but I'm very aware of the fact that a lot of people have CZcams playing in the background while they do other things and good audio would be beneficial to the growth of my channel. Great video, Cathrin!❤
Great video! I think a lot of people underestimate the importance of having good audio on their video. A good mic, and one with a good wind sock if you're shooting outside is key! Happy St. Patricks Day! Have fun, and stay safe everyone!
This was a really great video! Thanks for sharing that helped A LOT 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This was EXTREMELY helpful! I don't understand mics, but it was really helpful to hear the differences within all of them
Literally what i needed right now !😍🔥
Im planning to get a mic but was confused between rode and boya
Elementec i personally use the micro for my videos and it sounds great to me!
Your one of the people who inspire me to keep going and keep growing my channel✨✨
Yes it's true let's grow together
Healing Tunes done your turn ❤️👍
I was thinking to buy a new microphone so this video is really helpful 👍
oh perfect timing!
Indeed, a perfect timing
The contentBug to the rescue 😊
Trending Topic - Self Development Tips this video was definitely worth the watch if you’re on to getting q new mic!
I freaking love the blooper segment that you leave at the end of your video. Definitely copying that, if you don't mind!
I really admire the way she presented the whole thing. Nice!
Would have liked to see the difference between the two microphones at different distances. How far can each microphone capture your audio before it doesn't sound good? Your built-in camera microphone sounded pretty good to me, and it only seemed like there was a slight difference between it in the Rode VideoMicro, so I wondered if the micro maybe would have made a difference a little further away from the camera?
This was great!!! This is my kind of tech review!
Great Video Cathrin, keep up the work.
Just ordered the micro - thanks for another great video Catherin!
I needed this video! The next thing I getting is some sound equipment to boost that quality on my channel!
I subbed to ypi
Thanks!!
The -10 was very soft and 20+ DB was like "Hulk will smash puny human!"
TheBlueRage hahah
This was EXACTLY what we needed... I have heard great things about Røde. Thank you!
Oh you're welcome!
I do talking head type videos. A Boya BY-M1 lav mic has been a brilliant option for me. Incredibly cheap (under $20), and unlike other bits of equipment, I really don’t feel the need to upgrade it. Highly recommended!
I was just wondering about this and you made a video of it! Thank you. This is why i follow you.
I’ve been wanting to get a MIC for my videos so this is super helpful ❤️❤️
I am no pro at vlogging and don't really like vlog channels.I just watch this for the mic review.I like your vlog style and the way you edit your videos.
Nice , hope your channel grows fast.
Been thinking about getting a microphone so this was great! Thank you!
Im curious as to what levels you set your audio manually when using the Pro +. Usually from what I saw on the other videos they would bring the preamps/audio level within the camera as low as possible to avoid hiss and then add the +20db with the camera.
This is what I wanted to know. Thanks for the mic review
Sending all my love from Paris, although we're in a severe lockdown since today, I keep hustling and hoping for the best! Stay safe Cath and keep up the good work 🧡
Oh you stay safe too! It's so scary with everything that's going on. Please be smart and safe. And wishing your the best of health as we all get through this! :)
Well done for your first time! I watched the whole video and I found it very interesting. Good job!
I really like your channel. Thanks for what you do. It is really helping me as a creator! Thank you!!!!
I enjoyed how you were introducing the product.
Good vibes you are spreading around 👍👍
OMG. The dead cat comment made me spit my coffee all over my desk. 😂😂😂 love your videos
I think the Pro+ just gives you a few more options vs. the Micro. In addition to a more full sound generally, you can get away with being a bit farther from the Pro+ and still get good results without having to boost the gain all that much vs the Micro. Also, with the Low Cut filters, the Pro+ should be able to mitigate background noise (especially things like furnace/AC/Fan air flow) better. OH, and then there's the 10 year warranty on the Pro+, which is pretty awesome if you're willing to pay more upfront for it, vs the 1 yr on the Micro.
LOVED YOUR VIDEO!
Rode mic is on my wish list now, thanks Cathrin! Been happy with using a lapel mic for my workout videos but I don’t want to always have to wear it
I have a cheap lapel mic and it works great for now since I’m so small. But I definitely didn’t anticipate how hard it is not to accidentally touch it while I’m filming and creating a bunch of static 😂 love the actual audio samples!
Hahaha that's something I would be worried about! Especially if you move around a lot in your videos I feel like that would be hard!
I have the rode camera and an EOS canon m50 too! I just started my channel in January! I love your videos! They are so helpful for me starting my new channel! My rode mic was 60 dollars at best buy. I am so happy someone suggested me to check out your videos a couple months ago when I was starting!
Awe I'm so glad that you found your way here too! And best of luck with your channel! :)
Thanks for the video! I must say that I was so unhappy with my videos’ audio till I bought a nice mic! I used a studio mic that was toooo sensitive, and I couldn’t get rid of echo. Now I’m using a simple mic and happy with my videos quality. I say... one might have crappy video, but let us take pity on our viewers’ ears!!! 👂👂👂
*thanks for sharing your equipment journey*
I enjoyed watching them and seeing the growth so far.
I use Rode mic (the smaller one) and Canon M50. I just got them and I'm so excited about them.
With growth I might upgrade, but for now I'm stuck with them
Cheers!
With love,
Nigerian CZcamsr 🇳🇬
No difference in sound between two Rodes but +20db gain do sound juicier. Do you normally use it on or off?
Hahah, I loved your honesty in this vid. I'm in the same boat; thinking I need a better mic for vlogging, but having no idea about the technical aspects. Good to not feel so alone on that!
This was super helpful! I am a new CZcamsr and Audio has been a struggle for me. Thank you for this demo.
Great "non-techy" mic comparison. I use the video micro on my GoPro Hero 6 and love it! Dont think I would like having to mess with charging the mic battery.
Yea I honestly can't hear any difference. I love my micro
I've had the Rode VideoMicro and my M50 for over a year now & I love the quality of both of them! I'm so proud of how far you've come since I started following you last year. I can't wait to see more detailed thoughts about the differences in the mics!
Can you tell me more about the Rode micro mic. I just got them and somehow I still get some grainy noise after recording.
Is there a way I can stop it?
Chief Vera It could be a setting in your camera or phone, whichever you’re using to record, that is still using the built-in mic. I know for some devices, you have to change the settings to use an external microphone. Or it could also be the type of conditions you’re trying to film in and it’s just picking up static. I hope this helps!
I record with an M50
Maybe its from the filming room. I will try else where and then compare.
Thanks for your advice
I loved this video so much. Is there a video where you discuss cameras? I’ve been looking into vlogging❤❤
Thanks Cat! This is exactly what I wanted to know!
This video came at the perfect time!!!! I'm weighing my options for potentially upgrading the sound on my channel
Needed this as been wondering whether to get the more expensive one or not, thank you! x
Charlotte Buttrick this video was great tips
Boom great analysis.
Thank you so much.
Fire girl!
Loved this! You mentioned backup M50 batteries you use - did you purchase Canon batteries or did you find cheaper options? 🙂
I'm very frustrated with the Canon DSLR hissing sound I get when plugging in the Rode mic, I just don't know how to fix it and all the videos I've found about it don't help at all :'( Have you had this issue with your camera?
Set to manual- lower all the way down the mic volume- press right once. Thank me later
I'd say for the small time channels like ours, we would go with the video micro to start. Pretty cool rundown. Very cool Rode sent you a nice mic.
Texas Family Camping completely agree!
Thanks Catherine!!!! Love your channel!!! You have mentored my channel to a nice momentum!!! Our family watched u together for TIPS!!! KEEP ROCKIN!!!
I loved this video! 🧡
Thank you so much for this review, i've ben trying to find a good microphone and now i know what one to get in the future!
Great video! Right now I am currently using my iPhone 11... and I am in love with it!! The iPhone 11 has great camera quality for CZcams!
Arlise Guzman will keep this in mind! Thank you!
Loved this video! Great detail and point of view. I'm getting the mic pro + soon, and I am intimidated by it too and it hasn't arrived.
I have the rode micro and it does the job well specially if you’re starting up. I personally think you should be improving equipment as your channel grows. Thanks for the video!
How do you feel about the rode video mic go. I hear everyone says it’s bad because of the buzzing noise that comes from it
Thank you, I've been looking into mics and wondering what kind of price point just to get started. This was very helpful :)
Thank you!! I appreciate this video
Awesome Thankyou for the recommendations
Oh wow, what a difference. I have same camera and same mic but I might wait until my channel grows to up grade to that awesome mic
Great job 👍 thanks for the info.
Another fantastic video Cathrin! Thankyou! I could only just tell the difference between the Pro+ and the Micro, much more obvious with the DB at -10 to +20.
Exactly the video i was looming for. Thank you! New sub from Idaho
Your videos are sooo helpful. I am just starting my channel and you have all the right videos. Thanks soo much
Rode is so good! I like your sentiment about not needing thousands of dollars of equipment until you are ready to commit.
Thousands of dollars of equipment won't fix bad content, it will only enhance it!
Have been wanting to upgrade my rode mic go to the pro. Now i cant wait to. Great vid!
I use my phone to do videos, I switch to highest resolution and my videos are posted in 4K quality. I'm still wondering though if I should get a separate camera.
😲how can you talk so fast n yet so coherent I’m in awe I understood everything. Subscribed !
She painstakingly edits out all the breathes and pauses.
Yeah..hahahahaha
What type of tripod would the videomicro be compatible with when using an iPhone?
Love your videos, ive recently started my channel an need all the help i can get 🤣 you offer such good advice xx
I love all the bloopers in the end!
You are wonderful cath!!! Hope you always be successful and even if you start making videos about your normal life, we will always be there. Be successful!! Love ya! 😍🥰❤😘
Awe thank you so much! You're the best!
Eva Joseph lets connect and grow together.
Thank you so much! This video helped me a lot.💕
Thanks for the video. I am starting a CZcams channel & I’m doing some research. I really like the way you explain things very clear & helpful.
This was so good, now i know what to do , thanks!
Thanks for the video. May I know if you can use the Rode Video Micro as an external mic for an imac or ipad (via stereo jack)? If yes, how's the quality?
Thanks for the video! I have been debating what kind of mic I should get for my channel. This video is very helpful. Before you got any mics, had you ever try to optimize your sound with software editing?
Nope! Like I said in the video I'm not much of a tech person so I wouldn't even know how to go about that hahah
I thank you for this video because I’m struggling if I need the small one for now or should I buy the bug guy for long term use.
I like the new one it seems smoother. 20 is better! I cannot hear the wind. Do you ever use a desk microphone or one that plugs into your Mac? I create voice-overs in my videos and am currently using the rode microphone that clips on your shirt. If you do I would love to hear about that.
I absolutely love your channel and your emails. You’re so encouraging and you have helped me so much honestly. So funny that you posted this when you did actually because this is something I’ve been trying to research myself. Right now I’m using just my iPhone for videos. I mostly do vlogging, as of now but I’m saving up to invest in a camera. But anyways my question is my audio is super bad on my phone, even when I’m just filming informational videos at home. Any suggestions for audio with iPhones? Are their good mics for that?
Enjoyed this - helpful. More tech videos welcome. Especially interested in what type of camera is good for yoga videos
We are a newer channel here and we've been loving your content! We are looking into a rode wireless go mic right now and are using a Boya shotgun mic (cheap knockoff of the rode video micro I think lol) with our Canon M50. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Keep up the content and inspiring new channels! We've blown up a bit the last few days and are staying plugged into what you are doing!
check out the takstar or maybe the deity offbrand/rode clone. The takstar actually sounds better than the rode mic and is only $25.
Not my video but this guy did a great review.
czcams.com/video/p9rrr3l3yuA/video.html
this is super helpful video ,,, thanks a lot
Madam please mention which software are you using high quality videos into low quality videos without loosing quality.
How far from the mics were you when recording the indoor tests?
Cathrin, what settings do you use for videomicro? I bought using your link but the audio quality is not as clean as yours. Thank you for the video 💕
What i love your videos is so much entertaining to me and tho your personality is top of the world
Hi, i bought the canon M50, and i also bought a rode microphone ( not the pro )
After recording i noticed that the sound on my camera s really low. Even on maximum volume setting on the camera. When i took the SanDisk out and played it on my laptop, the sound was really not impressive. And no difference in comparison with recording without microphone. Any advice?
Great video! When I was looking back in December this would have been so helpful. I ended up with the rhode video mic the one that is 160 dollars. I couldn’t decide and I knew I didn’t need the most expensive best in this line. But I also knew I didn’t want the smallest cheapest one either. That’s how I ended up with the third and middle one of the 5 in this line.
