As you guys know, a couple of months ago I decided to invest in my CZcams channel by improving my audio quality with the Rode VideoMicro. Now, this is one of their more affordable and honestly cheaper mics. So I was curious, is the pricey mic worth the investment?! Will it really improve your audio quality that much. Now, I should note that I'm not a tech person. I'm just a CZcamsr who wants to know what's the best equipment for creating CZcams videos. So in this video, I share my thoughts, do an audio test indoors and outdoors, and ultimately, I want you guys to tell me if you think it's worth the price! - XO, Cathrin

There is a big difference between the built-in mike and the Rode Micro. I didn't find a lot of difference between the Micro and Micro Pro +. The price difference is quite significant, I will go with the cheaper option as it's my first mike.

The -10db would be used for things like if you are at a concert and aren't wanting to blow out the audio. The +20db might be used when you are alone in a room or at a place where you have to be quiet (like a library) and need it to pick up softer spoken conversation :) Great video though. I've been looking at the VideoMicro for a GoPro setup so think that's the way to go for sure!

I sort of jumped off the deep end when starting our new family travel vlog and purchased the Pro+ without knowing anything about audio.😱 Thankfully, like you, I found some good tutorials on CZcams and now I love the mic.😀 That said, I would push a newbie to the VideoMicro. There's no need to go crazy on the upfront costs. I fully agree with you that the Pro+ is a large mic, and not very discrete while vlogging out in public although the audio is amazing!
By the way, I'm looking forward to your TubeBuddy Livestream!!

Yes, CZcams is a visual medium, but I'm very aware of the fact that a lot of people have CZcams playing in the background while they do other things and good audio would be beneficial to the growth of my channel. Would have liked to see the difference between the two microphones at different distances. How far can each microphone capture your audio before it doesn't sound good? Your built-in camera microphone sounded pretty good to me, and it only seemed like there was a slight difference between it in the Rode VideoMicro, so I wondered if the micro maybe would have made a difference a little further away from the camera?

I think the Pro+ just gives you a few more options vs. the Micro. In addition to a more full sound generally, you can get away with being a bit farther from the Pro+ and still get good results without having to boost the gain all that much vs the Micro. Also, with the Low Cut filters, the Pro+ should be able to mitigate background noise (especially things like furnace/AC/Fan air flow) better. OH, and then there's the 10 year warranty on the Pro+, which is pretty awesome if you're willing to pay more upfront for it, vs the 1 yr on the Micro.

Chief Vera It could be a setting in your camera or phone, whichever you’re using to record, that is still using the built-in mic. I know for some devices, you have to change the settings to use an external microphone. Or it could also be the type of conditions you’re trying to film in and it’s just picking up static. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the video. May I know if you can use the Rode Video Micro as an external mic for an imac or ipad (via stereo jack)? If yes, how's the quality?

Thanks for the video! I have been debating what kind of mic I should get for my channel. This video is very helpful. Before you got any mics, had you ever try to optimize your sound with software editing?

Nope! Like I said in the video I'm not much of a tech person so I wouldn't even know how to go about that hahah

I thank you for this video because I’m struggling if I need the small one for now or should I buy the bug guy for long term use.

I like the new one it seems smoother. 20 is better! I cannot hear the wind. Do you ever use a desk microphone or one that plugs into your Mac? I create voice-overs in my videos and am currently using the rode microphone that clips on your shirt. If you do I would love to hear about that.

I absolutely love your channel and your emails. You’re so encouraging and you have helped me so much honestly. So funny that you posted this when you did actually because this is something I’ve been trying to research myself. Right now I’m using just my iPhone for videos. I mostly do vlogging, as of now but I’m saving up to invest in a camera. But anyways my question is my audio is super bad on my phone, even when I’m just filming informational videos at home. Any suggestions for audio with iPhones? Are their good mics for that?

We are a newer channel here and we've been loving your content! We are looking into a rode wireless go mic right now and are using a Boya shotgun mic (cheap knockoff of the rode video micro I think lol) with our Canon M50. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Keep up the content and inspiring new channels! We've blown up a bit the last few days and are staying plugged into what you are doing!

check out the takstar or maybe the deity offbrand/rode clone. The takstar actually sounds better than the rode mic and is only $25.
Not my video but this guy did a great review.

Cathrin, what settings do you use for videomicro? I bought using your link but the audio quality is not as clean as yours. Thank you for the video 💕

Hi, i bought the canon M50, and i also bought a rode microphone ( not the pro )
After recording i noticed that the sound on my camera s really low. Even on maximum volume setting on the camera. When i took the SanDisk out and played it on my laptop, the sound was really not impressive. And no difference in comparison with recording without microphone. Any advice?

Great video! When I was looking back in December this would have been so helpful. I ended up with the rhode video mic the one that is 160 dollars. I couldn’t decide and I knew I didn’t need the most expensive best in this line. But I also knew I didn’t want the smallest cheapest one either. That’s how I ended up with the third and middle one of the 5 in this line.
