To be honest, the Deadcats are kind of expensive for what they are, probably because of Rode's branding. I recommend getting a $5 one from Ebay or Amazon, which works just as well. Be sure to check the dimensions before you buy though. Also: 10:59 -> Don't forget to "Always Rig to the Right!"

I think the video was great, it was very complete dealing the pros and cons in a way beginners would understand. Its not easy to find videos that have the sounds tests as you provided. Only downside the decibel chart didn't seem to match its location to the mics behind, so it was hard for me to follow as i am very new to the product names and specs. overall loved it!

I used to work at this tech company where we recorded internal stuff like external speakers and important company wide announcements. When I got there they had the Rode VideoMic mounted on a camcorder and that was the kit I was working with. I was not impressed with the Røde to say the least. I actually ended up using my personal Zoom h4n after a few times and to me it just sounded sooooooo much better. Mind you I'm actually a newbie when it comes to audio stuff. I had the H4n because I was a gear junkie that wanted to start doing more video stuff but never really did.

worth noting that with the VideoMicro you can snap the red cable into the notches in the cold-shoe's tightening wheel. I haven't used the other mic's but wonder if that's the case with them too and would solve your problem of having a loose cable getting in the way of the EVF?

Max, my kid plays in a band and I've been using an ax-53 with a rode micro. Although it works well I had to shoot a performance from one side approx 20' away 30 degrees. I'm unsure if a shotgun style microphone was ideal, l could tell it was selective depending on who I was filming. Volume set to 50% manual. Any ideas?

That's all very nice, but can you recommend a camera mic for recording a band, let's say at a pub gig? Because it's really hard to find an inexpensive mic that's good, I don't include the boya mm1 and Rode VideoMic etc. They ALL buzz out/muddy/blur the sound even when adjusting the onboard clipping or using the auto clipping mode. It's prbably my camera? And no I don't want to buy a $300+ mic as I'm shasing a Shure SM57 (which I could probably use?). Great video, thanks.

You can actually reverse the mount on the old Videomic (the big one with the battery) so that the camera shoe mount lines up with the back of the mic, so it doesn't stick out beyond the tail end.

I own a Canon t6i but have only used it for photography, no video yet. I plan to move into video in the coming weeks and am trying to decide on the best microphone with a reasonable price, the $299 would be about my max. Is the amp in the t6i really that awful to where I would need the boost that the Rode Pros offer. I’d love to save a little money with the mic if possible and spend it elsewhere like on lighting etc. I would be filming in a bedroom converted into a studio, a large open living room, and possibly some outside shots. I have a sony a6300 and a sony a7 II and it seems like their audio from camera is slightly better than using the old school rode mic. am I doing something wrong ? I used to use it on a canon 60d and it was fine but with the sonys is so much more background noise and the voice doesn't sound as clear

I came back to this video because I noticed my Rode VideoMic Go was introducing static and hiss in my videos and wanted to see what mic is should get to replace it. I thought maybe it just quit on me. Nice (and sad) to know that it's not just my mic...

What mic would be best to pick up the audio of the camera holder and the person in front on the camera

Surprised you say you don't recommend the original Video mic at the beginning it seem much better than the go and overall best for voice fidelity. Can you tell me why you don't recommend it over the Go. Great in depth vid by the way.

Exactly. Price/performance wise this even would be my pick of the bunch 😊

From what I hear, a6500 on board mic vs rode video micro (put on top of camera from distance) almost no difference, no improvement. So is it worth getting it for a6500?
And what about rode video micro vs the takstar mic? since they both cheap
