    How exactly do these tiny engines make so much power? Formula 1 uses 1.6L V6 hybrids, yet despite their small size they're able to make more power than engines three times their size. Today we're going to dig into just how these little engines pack such a big punch.

    As you say, the current PUs are capable of so much more. If materials like ceramics, metal matrix composites, magnesium and tungesten-based alloys were permitted we'd be seeing well over 1500hp, with reliability. 😭

    • @rosco3
      @rosco3 Před 4 měsíci

      That wouldn't make the sport more interesting...
      Not that it would hurt but it honestly doesn't change much and it would be undrivable in some tracks if they just cranked power with nothing adjusted elsewhere
      And unreliability is intentional and good. They need to keep changing regulations to both inovate and create room for teams to take risks with reliability

      @@rosco3 Whether or not it would make the sport more interesting is neither here nor there, I'm just curious about how much performance we could squeeze out of this current generation of PUs if the shackles were removed. :)

    If you think these engines are impressive, the 1.5L turbos of the 80's were downright evil. Good job on the video dude.

      They were unreliable and that's where you get your power. For v6 turbo are way more interesting

    Im still impressed of the compression ratio of 18:1 in current generation. Imagine the gasket and headbolts that has to withstand the sheer compression with turbo 😊

    These power units may not sound as amazing as a v8 v10 or v12 but they sure are amazing technology which is often looked over unfortunately.

    Great video! Wish you got into the technical aspects of the MGU-H, that’s really a big differentiator of F1. Yes they are gone for 2026 but still fascinating. Really good work- far far away from Matt and Tommy! Lol.

    Is the 50% thermal efficiency just the combustion engine ore is it the whole power unit? (ice engine + hybrid)

    “[the higher compression ration] allows the pistons to go a tiny bit further” i’m sorry what? Compression ratio doesn’t affect stroke at all. Instead, the take away should’ve been that it compresses the air fuel mixture way more than a road legal engine, extracting more power per kg of fuel.

    The only criticism of the current V6 hybrid turbos is why don’t they sound loud and beautiful like the 1980s turbo engines. But other than that, great content.

    1.6 litre in the uk and eu is avergae small to medium size engine, for the americans 1.6 litre is 97 cubic inches 😂 the power output vs rave distance covered is insane.

    I think the peak is 10.5k rpm and not 12k rpm. I mean atleast that what engineering explained taught me 🤓 also if displacement low, increase boost. Thats the unga bunga way for moah pawah that unironically still holds in F1

    • @beany1987
      @beany1987 Před 4 měsíci

      I have looked at the technical regulations and there isn't a stated maximum rpm limit, there is a limit for mgu-k and mgu-h but not the engine. The rpm limit usually on live data goes to 12.5k but probaly can't go past that with the fuel flow limits.

    Engine? blame Hamilton for party mode as he is the best still even without modes he still is showing us that if Redbull didn't Cheat without the long lasting advantage courtesy of the cost cap it would still be that bloody Hamilton more than ever before leading every F1 event
