I find it interesting that when Olivia Rodrigo blew up most people didnt even know she was on Disney cause being on Disney in this day and age is so irrelevant
Most people knew her from a movie called an American girl.
I remember watching her back in 2018 or something. I would've never guess she would blow up this much! Especially since her Disney show was pretty mediocre

Olivia Rodrigo choosing not to sign with Hollywwod Records was probably the best decision she could have ever made. Hollywood Records really stunted Sabrina's career. She's ten years in and finally has her first hit.

I feel like Zendaya shouldn’t count as she’s stated that she prefers acting over music. The other Disney popstars gave up acting to pursue music.

Zendaya’s case feels more like being forced to do music against her will and dipping the moment she fulfilled her contract with Disney. Can’t call her a popstar when she was always an actress.

I’d argue Ariana did it more on her own than with the help of Nickelodeon, if anything Nickelodeon pushed Victoria Justice and to an extent Miranda Cosgrove more than Ariana as far as record deals and playing their solo records on the network etc.
Nonsense, Feather, Espresso, and being an opener on the Eras tour has really helped Sabrina break through!

Another reason Disney and Nickelodeon can't push out pop stars like they used to is because fewer people actually are watching their programs on cable. Live viewership has declined from 50% to 70% from a decade ago, and most children's programming is being pushed to streaming services. Viewership used to be measured by millions of viewers but now it's by hundreds of thousands, meaning there are less opportunities to break out a new pop star.

Hollywood Records stunted Sabrina’s success. She’s about 5-10 years behind where she should be. Glad that Nonsense, Feather, and Espresso ricocheted her to where she’s at now at least.

"being manufactured isn't always the worst thing for an artist." yes, everybody is not good at everything. In fact, it's actually unusual for popstars to be good at singing, writing, producing, and developing an image/aesthetics all at the same time. I guess people just like the idea of the "started writing songs in my bedroom" popstar, so there's shame attached to the "manufactured" label.
That's why Kpop is popular. The whole point is to spent years manufacturing these talented singers, dancers and some producers.
Rihanna is an amazing example of a good manufactured artist. Almost all of her hits were written by others, she doesn't play any instruments nor produces her music, but she is a decent singer and a good performer. Plus, she developed an image of her own and is an amazing businesswoman.

Part of what helped the OGs succeed was that their young fan bases grew up alongside with them and remained faithful.
i think that olivia rodrigo is the last disney girlie to break the bubble and go mainstream. like, no one really watches disney now like we did back in the day, times have changed. our childhood is different than today's childhood, we didn't have social media back then. we need to give raven her flowers. she's the OG, like, for real. and she's still as relevant as she was back then, which is incredible. i think that miley, selena and demi were able to maintain their relevancy and success because their audience was the same and we all grew up with them, and so their work matured with their audience, which is smart.

Your statement about the manufactured music of some of the disney kids being better is so real and I’m very happy you said it. I don’t like the new pop scene because not many labels wanna support new artists. Was some of the music generic? I just noticed something. So, Zendaya and them didn’t grow up in that era of scandals and whatnot. Like Selena, Miley, Demi and the Jonas Brothers were all like a clique and had they little scandals. But one thing I noticed, Selena would appear on Hannah Montana as would the Jonas Brothers as cameos. Does ANYONE remember KSM? They were an all girl Disney poppunk band in the late 2000s with songs like I Want You To Want Me and Read Between The Lines. They made a song for wizards of waverly place called Magic Carpet Ride. Their sound is similar to Avril and Paramore and they even opened up for Demi Lovato on tour. They only ever released one album but the rhythm guitarist, Katie Cecil, had another band where she sung in the mid-late 2010s called Wayfarers (about three songs from Wayfarers made it into The Kissing Booth, including “Swimming In Stars” when at the kissing booth Elle and Noah kiss for the first time)

disney was sort of at its peak in the 90s-2000s. that's why they pushed their stars to branch out and kept them stuck in contracts.
the rise of social media has changed the game. teens are finding that same relation and entertainment from influencers and streaming sites over tv channels.
trends have changed aswell and unfortunately disney is stuck in the past with their marketing. the more doors that open, the less amount of artists looking for big breaks through labels and businesses.
it's good. disney pop stars are iconic but they were all abused and shoved in boxes that stunted their growth. disney was a starting point, the whole fascination was focused on what they'd do afterwards. we just get to skip ahead now.

I feel like Olivia is the only one who didn’t get popular in the music industry for being in Disney. She blew up thanks to TikTok
Honestly I don’t necessary consider Olivia Rodrigo as a Disney pop star simply because she never made music behind their label. Unlike all the others, she signed to an entirely different label which allowed her artistic freedom and she was not restricted to what she had to make music about. Also, some did not know she was a Disney star when DL came out. She was not connected to Disney in any way unless you knew her from her shows. She blew up with the help of TikTok since her first single went viral on there, not with the help of Disney. I feel like out of everyone, she was the one who got out of Disney in the best way possible without any restrictions or forced into a box. Thus, I don’t think she should even be considered part of the Disney pop star machine. Even Sabrina Carpenter had to make certain number of albums before she can cut ties with them and I honestly think she might be the last former Disney star to make it big within music.

I loved the radio Disney radio channel when I was in my teens (mid 00s) I even won a few competitions on it!
I think the best thing a star could do is to not sign with Hollywood Records. I definitely think the Disney Machine is dying, but it's not done yet. I think 1 or 2, maybe 3 more "Artist" might come out of Disney, but I think Only one of those would be a "superstar" in the likes of Demi Lovato. Olivia Rodrigo is the newest edition. I think Kylie Cantrall will see success in some form in the music world. She has been releasing music while on Disney, on its decent music. I think she might have a chance because I don't think she's signed to Hollywood Records, most of her promotions seems to be self-driven. Most of the promotion Disney gives her is for her acting projects, not her music. She has the vocal talent and seems to have good songwriting abilities (or a good team of writers), and she seems to have a "princess of pop" type of energy which could translate into mainstream pop very well. However, because she's not getting the major musical promotion, she might not blow up until after her Disney days, or if she does blow up while on Disney, she might have stunted success. Dove Cameron has already moved into her mainstream pop era, and I feel like she will continue to grow, but she won't ever be "Demi Lovato's Level" of Stardom. She's still acting too (not on Disney), so she might be one of those stars who is known for both, but I'm not sure if her music will be "icon status" anytime soon, she's having more of a slow rise in popularity. Sofia Wylie will probably be another Zendaya because she's done some music and it's good, but she doesn't seem too focused on the music, but she also hasn't done much acting outside of her Disney work, so only time will tell where she goes.

Most people who keep up with her consider her an icon at this point. If not as an actress, as a person, if neither, they consider her a fashion icon. She’s classy, smart, talented and unproblematic. She’s perceived how a lot of celebrities and influencers strive to be perceived as, and does it effortlessly. I believe that Disney started "creating singers" after they saw Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, JC Chasez and Hilary Duff slip through their fingers. That's when they really tried to push their "Disney popstars" plan. Btw, I believe that they also tried to replicate the *NSYNC and Britney formula often, because their female singers were soloists most of the time , while their male singers were almost always a part of a mostly male band.

I honestly feel like the Disney machine is still very much in use but instead of the company being the main factor what direction a stars career goes now it’s more in the stars hand especially with Disney plus being basically the replacement of caple disney and how Olivia rodrigo came up and how we have social media I feel like disney can still make stars staring in whatver popular on disney plus and If the project Involves music I feel like a lot of the stars will use Disney as a stepping stone to get known and in the industry and then they will be smart to sign to a separate music label so they can have that freedom and not be boxed in a just child music genre and since caple tv irrelavent now and we have social media You can be 17 year old star and post and make music that can cater to your age audience and older and not have to worry about if your music and identity and the way you dress has to go with ur character and ur 7-11 year old audience unless u want to like jojo siwa

Avril should never fall into this realm. At 15, Avril essentially said FU to her producers and moved from New York to LA so she could work with a team that let her make the music she wanted. Avril’s music has always been 100% her. She is not like any of the other artists mentioned here.

i would argue against putting avril lavigne here. she’s said before how she had to fight to get creative control for her debut album and to get the rock influenced sound she wanted. if anything she had less control as an adult with goodbye lullaby due to her label. her fighting for the “let go” sound definitely paved the way for artists like hilary duff who used the same producers and subsequently every disney channel star afterward.
My single nitpick. Sabrina is still massive, and imo really just starting. Not fair to compare her career of 8 years so far with the now almost 20 years Miley and Demi have been in the game, I’m sure if we give our currently younger artists another decade they’ll be fully different people, let alone artists by then.

Some of these Disney/Nickelodeon stars have good songs but are not good singers. But somehow kept going due to their popularity. Mostly Selena Gomez. But luckily for Selena, she was atleast nominated for a Grammy.
- Hilary Duff gain more creative control over her music by time she released her Dignity album in 2007 (but was also writing her own music as well)
- Aly & AJ had gain creative control with their music and are still successful and writing their own music
- Demi Lovato learned at an early age to write her own music and later gain creative control of her music control. And has been nominated for 2 Grammys
- Miley Cyrus got lucky because her Bangerz Era could've ended her music career. But luckily for her she changed her ways and came back with better music. And now she's a 2 time Grammy winner.
Many people are blaming K-pop for this becasue while Disney songs and style are pretty much the same, K-pop gives more variety, giving the young generation more options.

yea in acting but music wise she never signed with hollywood records which is the label of all disney popstars so she isn't really a disney popstar

Disney Channel aside, I'm afraid we've strayed too far away from the explicitly manufactured elements of being a pop girl. Everyone wants to be the "raw" singer-songwriter and walk the very narrow path Taylor, Lana, Billie, Olivia, etc are on because they're what's popular at the moment. It's not everyone's forte and that's okay! Sabrina and Tate stand out for this reason alone.
