I am a full time generator tech and electrician. I do some auto repair on the side. Back when we have tried itemized bills I got so much complaining about what the bill was and why I charged so much or “i can get that part at Lowe’s for half what you charged me”. Since going flat rate and no itemizing I rarely have complaints and when someone occasionally asks for an itemized bill I politely tell them it’s not going to change the total price.

Dealerships want to round up numbers to pad the bill. They charge more than actual costs with outrageous profits. $5-$10 shop fee on top of an already inflated bill is ridiculous. They pay workers but complain about high labor costs. Lies.

Back when I was dealing with this nightmare of a profession, I wouldn’t itemize the estimate. I’d write it up and add a little fluff ( it’s easier to come down then go up ) due to its time saving, and helps weed out the whiners. I found that if they whine about the estimate it’s best to let em walk, having no customers is better than having bad customers in this industry, because even if you get the job the compensation is barely worth it. I’d then itemize the final bill for record keeping .
Comparing automotive to HVAC is apples to oranges. If you have to hire a licensed contractor for a job the price might fluctuate 5%-10%, whereas automotive is a constant race to the bottom. Some backyard mech will underbid you by 50%-75% , then screw up the job, and now you get to deal with the crying customer that doesn’t want to spend the money to fix it, because they already spent x amount. Or you try to help them and end up screwing your self ( I learned this the hard way ).

I work at a high performance shop and we specialize in mustangs. It’s hard to have this sort of “package” deal because you never know what these cars are gonna need. We can pull an intake and find a bent pushrod, then we gotta do pushrods etc etc. Same thing with doing a heads, cam, intake setup. Every car is different in their own way.

Fix it yourself. I do all my home and shop hvac needs and saved over 15000.00 on my shop 2 years ago replacing with split units. We as shop owners can save more than we can make in doing these jobs ourselves in the same period of time. My church I am over the hvac and called out a hvac company and first thing is replace it. Only used a few hours a week only when hot and little run time. I said fix the leak and convert freon and that is not what they want to here. Easier to make 14 grand for half a day than to work half a day for 2 grand and you can profit 10 grand on the new unit.

Yes and No. I think it is better and less confusion. I never quote the job parts and labor. I tell the customer you need new brakes and rotor on the front. They say How much? I say $XXX dollars. They say yes or no. Now, if they want to do a comprehensive tune up or service that is different. I will say Brakes are $X, plugs and coils are $x, Fluids are $x. That will give the customer options. But i wouldn't break every items and fluid in parts list. As far as shop supplies, yeah, I don't charge for it, but if I use 2 cans of brake clean then someone got to pay for it. LOL, It should be rolled into the price. I think the software shops use should have 2 print outs. One for the accounting with detailed parts, labor and shop cost and one summary for the customer. I think I have seen some that do that. Disclaimer, I am not an official shop, just do it on the side for fun and some extra cash so i am not obligated by the state laws.

  • @PaulsToolReview
    @PaulsToolReview Před měsícem +1

No way! Automotive labor rates range as well as parts. This would make price comparisons more difficult to determine if you are getting a fair price on the labor and parts when comparing shops. You may think one shop is the place to go because the gave you a good first time customer deal, but later realize they are significantly more expensive than other similar shops. No thanks. I like to know the complete breakdown and exactly which parts needed replacing and the labor involved. If something similar breaks, how would I know if it was the replacement part or the old one they that was still good at the time? No thank you!

I make more money being transparent and we pay our electricians $75 hr so they don't need to be lying about work needed. Industry is joke full of criminals that we have helped bust doing multiple camera undercover set ups. There's never been a homeowner who said they didn't want to have us set up camera rigs to make sure they aren't being screwed by some uneducated criminal working for a company telling them R22 is no longer available. I think having labor times on an auto repair quote is unnecessary at this point. The labor time isn't listed for any other trade, which makes sense. If I hire a professional to do a job I'm not paying per hour, I'm paying for expertise, as long as the end result is a quality repair, I have no qualms over the labor I paid for.

  • @killer2600

Bills that aren't itemized are easy ways to deceive customers. Two plumber/hvac guys can give the customer the same price but what they promise to do for that quoted price can be completely different. It can even get down to being quoted a price, verbally told what kind of work needs to be done but getting a different job actually being done, and you can't dispute the discrepancy because what they said they would do for the quoted price was not detailed. But not itemizing the bill is great for service workers because it makes shopping around difficult - you never know how much is being spent on labor vs parts or what one company is adding to the job vs another company that is omitting things from the job.

The difference is your industry for the most part is a fixed location.
HVAC is probably the last protected industry in the sense that DYI’s are limited on purchasing refrigerant. It’s more difficult to figure out the costs of equipment to complain about it.
Blame every auto parts store and the aftermarket for educating the public on cheap chinese parts that make legitimate shops look like the bad guys using OEM.
HVAC imo is the used car salesman of the trades- there’s more bad ones than good ones. The worst ones usually have commercials and jingles to keep one and done customers.

This will do nothing. My state charges tax on parts but not on labor, the bill has to be broken down.
It does not work to not itemize. The service writers, who are supposed to know cars, are the ones that are being paid to talk every line and explain to the customer. When they get push back, they discount all lines.
All in search of a perfect CSR.
You call yourself the flare rate master but you have been missing a great many things when it comes to how or why things are not working.
Just like this vid, you failed to mention that there are laws that are nation wide that dictate a lot of this.
Example, it is LEGAL in all 50 states to add a half hour onto the repair bill WITHOUT customer approval. The customer must pay as the RO they signed IS a binding contract. Plumbers and a/c guys don’t have that.
