- The historic 2005 Champions League final is very well known for any Football fan, but what if I told you there is more to it than only the final?
The second episode of the "CONTEXT" series will tackle the long path of both Milan and Liverpool towards their historic encounter in 2005.
From Souness's sacking to Houllier's glimpses of greatness. From Milan's manager merry-go-round to the consistency of Ancelotti. From the change of the old guard at the Rossoneri to Shevchenko's brilliance.
From the spice boys at Liverpool to Gerrard's potential move to Chelsea.
This episode will cover all of that and more.

Among many, many things - not least how deep into the backstories it goes - I loved how you just let the last bit ride without narration, that was great. For me that game was the most powerful, gripping thing I’ve ever watched, and proof beyond doubt that at its best, nothing comes close to football. Can still feel to this day my stomach dropping through the floor when Dudek saved that Crespo header, deep in extra time . . This made it all feel real again. Top work
It was Shevchenko’s header, and then he saved the rebound with an even better save.
@@rossl5908 yes that is indeed true, funny how one's memory warps
@@tobysprigings7731 Dudek still has Shevchenko’s soul in his pocket after that one. 😄
This was the match that made me fall in love with football and with Liverpool. I have goosebumps.
@Dan mcbride the absolute 🧂🤣
Never looked forward to a CZcams release so much
I have a suggestion or two for a video: Documentary on how Brian Clough took Nottingham Forrest to European glory. Also a documentary on Bobby Robson's career from the UEFA Cup at Ipswich to managing England, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, PSV, Barca and then finishing his career at Newcastle. BTW This is easily the best documentary channel on CZcams. A must watch to any football lover.
I would pay to see the Nottingham forest story, I hope he sees your comment and does a video
Doc on the Marseille scandal would be interesting
@tackler96 have you seen the tifo version of that? It was a lovely video
And when Celtic won the 3 championships
There was Netflix documentary on Robson...it was emotional to say the least
The best documentary channel in youtube has come with another masterpiece ❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
I'm a simple man, I see a Balon video, I click like.
I had goosebumps while watching the last 10mins and I literally celebrated when dudek saved and jumped in the air...it made me feel I relieved every moment again...
Without a shadow of the doubt this is best youtube channel for football documentaries❤️
Lol Dudek is just a prick! Anyway Milan were able to take their revenge just a couple of years later, at it was supposed to happen in 2005. Jump on that

Absolutely magnificent documentary.
This is the best CZcams channel for documentaries. Quality of storytelling and weaving of images together is wonderful. The bit during the penalty shootout was spine chilling. Jumping from Dida to Bruce in the 80s, Shevchenko in the present to Shevchenko two years prior was genius.
Also again using Nils Frahm is always a welcome treat. Perfect Sunday evening entertainment. Can't wait for your next video. Quality always beats quantity, especially your quality.
Always appreciate your words Darragh ❤
@@balon-english What's the next one?
19:10 Take a second to appreciate how amazing that team was.
That is easily the finest assembled squad period and easily to best assembled squad to lose a European final....AC Milan had a world class INTERNATIONAL STARTER in ever position for club and country...Liverpool were heavy heavy underdogs, 3-0 at half is fair...AC milan started relaxing and thought the game was over...big mistake. Prime Gerrard could grab a game by the scruff of the neck and turn it on its head and the rest will follow...he lead by example...his header for the first goal woke up his teammates.
@MoejiiOsmanTV
Liverpool should have had a penalty in the first half.
Seen people calling this one of the best football youtube channels because of the quality of content, they were definitely not lying. Watched a few of your vids tonight and all incredible. Great work!
That pass by Kaka in the finals (39:37) was literally one of the best balls in the history of modern football. What a speech the manager and players must have given at halftime.
"Liverpool have their hands on the european cup again and this time it's for keeps."
The tears are unrestrained
I didn't get the "It's for keeps" line. What did he meant?
@@lucaslonchampt613 I believe that after winning the first 4 the team gets replica trophies and only after winning a 5th do you get to keep the actual trophy. If you were to choose which real trophy to keep I think this would be the one for any Liverpool fan.

As a PSV-fan, this still hurts. We had such a heroic season in the CL that year, and came so close to the final. My stomach still turns when I watch footage of that Ambrosini goal. But on a positive note, we got to see one of the most epic CL-finals from the 21st century!
Nowadays that's going to extra time. Crazy how they chnaged that rule

Still the best Champions League final in history for me and now seeing one of the best football documentaries ever, i cant get enough of this channel.
Great video. .. Shevchenko's penalty was one of the worst ones I have ever seen. Fantastic final. Milan's 3rd goal was phenomenal
Everything from the build up, Kaka, Crespo's sublime finish. The goal is pure text book training ground stuff with a pinch of artistry. It may seem like an "ordinary" finish at first, but when you watch it again and again, it's one of the most perfectly crafted goals I've ever witnessed in football. 10/10. (Juve fan here btw)
@@rhizoidx I couldn't have put it any better mate. It's one of the greatest goals that I've seen.
Shevchenko was frozen in time...that was a penalty taken by a man who's soul had be snatched by the moment....see the difference in kakas and cisse's confident penaltys vs pirlo and Shevchenko who were both shattered by the moment.
You have to give massive props to the Liverpool fans, down 3-0 to arguably the strongest team in Europe during the mid 2000s, singing YNWA to their team into the dressing room at halftime and refusing to give up, willing the team to get back in the game and ultimately emerging victorious. Best supporters in the world
So what? Yet liverpool never deserved to win that match. It was just a matter of unusual luck. Indeed two years later the perfect revenge happened. Deal with it.
@@micky100 Salty Milan fan, huh? Relax, first off I’m not a Liverpool supporter, I was merely complimenting their fans in Istanbul that night. Second I actually gave props to AC Milan in my comment, they really were the team to beat during the mid 2000s, world class players not just in their starters but coming off the bench. And you’re not wrong about the luck part, if that Milan team and that Liverpool team had played each other 10 times, I’d be willing to bet Milan would’ve won 9 of them. It’s just that on that one night in 2005, Liverpool were able to get the better of them, so don’t take it so personal.
@micky100
Milan were lucky in 2007 and didn't deserve to win. Their first goal came off Inzaghi's arm. It shouldn't have stood.
@kellijones6481
Milan weren't some super team though. PSV totally outplayed them in the semi final and Milan were fortunate to get past them. Only the year before, Deportivo la Corona beat them 4-0 after losing the first game 0-3.
Milan had form for collapsing after a lead. Similar to Barcelona in 2018 and 2019.

- Porto’s 2004 ucl
- Inter Milan between 2000-2010
- Diego Maradona’s time in Napoli

Yeah a context episode for the CL 2004 final would be great
One of the finest work on this channel so far. I especially love how the story is told almost entirely by the players, coaches and commentators. Narration is only used minimally whenever necessary. It must have taken so much effort to research and find all the primary sources. Amazing job!
Fun fact: Rafa after halftime against Milan said that if you boys manage to come back in this match and win, I’ll book y’all a flight to the playboy mansion.
Lmao
Rafa is my neighbour and that doesn’t sound like something he’d say
One of the most amazing stories that ever happened on football, told by the best football storyteller on CZcams. Thank you again Fahad! Gripping and enriching as always. Looking forward for the next one (no pressure :D)
These are absolutely incredible. Not only is it an amazing culmination of research down to who joined the squad and when, but you get an incredible sense of the stakes for both sides going into the CL final through your visual presentation of the events leading up to it. Definitley my favourite series on this channel. If you ever did more episodes, it would be great to see the backstory to Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid in 2014.

I've seen the final live, and possibly seen the highlights and route to the final a gazillion times over the internet. But your story telling with build up and references - Grobbelar's sphaghetti legs in particular - tied up beautifully with the soundtrack just blows it away.
You sir, are an international treasure.

Incredible. You hit the tone throughout that campaign perfectly. Takes me back to when I was young and the run up to that final was so emotional. This is why the super League is a bad idea. The competition allows clubs to make and break history.

Wow. Great production. Every other story on youtube about this is paling in comparison.
