  • Valve spring broke and valve hit the piston ls 5.3, removed the cylinder head and found damage piston. Should we build a junkyard 6.0 LQ9, LQ4 or rebuild the 5.3?

Hello good afternoon I have a 6.0 Yukon Denali and I can drive it for about.10 to 15 minutes then it will.cut off.and not start until about a 1hour.later any Ideal what it can be

You can move the piston that you are working on to TDC if you are worried about dropping a valve when reassembling. that way it can't drop into the cylinder.

Mitch, i just had somewhat of the same problem, i have an ls3, about a year ago i broke a valve spring but everything stayed together, this time the same valve bent a push rod!! i used to be a mechanic. i think the problem is the chevy lifters! there pumping all the way up and getting stuck and the valve retainers are slamming up against the valve guide and bending the push rod, you need to look at your valve guide and see if it has been shoved down into the port!! if it is thats why the valve hit the piston, my valve didn't hit the piston or the valve spring didn't break, but the push rod was bent really bad and this happened at about 1800 rpm, i'm going with the short travel TIE BAR lifters this time and i think they will solve the problem, the GM lifter design just sucks!! good luck Mitch

Thank you for the info! I will take a better look at the valve guid and do some more research on the TIE BAR lifters. Are you going with the Morel lifters?

Thank you, that's one of the companies I couldn't remember the name of. Are they pretty good kits?

Good spot, I have pairs of 799 or 862s waiting for this engine the next time I build it.

    As 6.0 owner, I say stroke the 5.3 to a 388

I'll have to look into that, wonder how much it would like boost? You not happy with the 6.0? reason I'm looking into the 6.0 is to do L92 heads and LSA supercharger.

I'm happy but I'd be a lot happier with a stroker! The same money I spent to refurbish and reseal this lq4 I could've just spent a extra couple hundred bucks and ended up with a 408

And as long as the internals are forged it'll handle boost

I feel that, Been kicking around the idea of doing a 408 as well. My buddy has a TSP 408 we will be dropping in his C5 and it got my gears turning.

No reason for an engine swap that little piece of metal will eventually make it to the oil pan and then get caught in the screen from the oil pick up tube so shouldn’t cause any damage or even make it to the oil filter. Just slap a head on it and get it going again
