2000 to 2007 GM Truck 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 Engines. Weird Rattle On Acceleration

  • This video will likely apply to all GM trucks with the 4.8, 5.3 or 6.0 litre engines from 2000 to 2007 and possibly others. The truck has an erratic tinny rattle noticed more with the windows open on acceleration going forward or braking in reverse. The problem is a broken starter drive shift fork which allows the starter drive to slide into the rotating flywheel teeth.

    I have a 2005 GMC 5.3 pickup truck. Here are the details of my issue:
    When I first start it in the morning, the oil pressure is fine but after the engine heats heated up and about 10 minutes of driving I hear a heavy rattle in the motor...this only happens upon any type of acceleration from a stop light or even accelerating on the highway, or street, even light acceleration. it is a content issue from that point forward, until the motor is stopped and given time for the time to cool down... Also after the engine heats up, the oil pressure drops somewhat..., also when I first start the cooled engine, I notice a heavy blue smoke from the tail pipe, this only lasts for a few seconds and then no more smoke... It has about 160,000 miles.
    Thanks for any advice you have to offer.
    If you have any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před rokem

      The engine noise and smoke are probably not related. You may have excessive bearing clearances or worn main or rod bearings. hen the oil is cold it is somewhat thicker and will help quiet down a bearing knock. This would also account for the low oil pressure. You should have it assessed by a mechanic as this is quite serious if that's whats going on. The smoke is likely due to worn valve guides and or valve seals. goodluck

    You might have saved me a small fortune. The mechanic told me it's the flexplate and it's $1200 to fix. Like yours, my truck would only make noise when accelerating and at idle while on an incline. I'm going to change the starter to see if that's it. I really don't trust this mechanic. @nottabidenfan1228 when exactly does it make noise? If it will do it sitting still then you might want to take it to a shop with a drive on hoist or a pit. Exhaust leak, heat shield rattle, drive belt tensioner or idler, ac belt or tensioner. You could try removing the belts one at a time.

You need to start with a scan of all the modules to see what codes it reports, refer to code diagnosis. Also need to monitor data in the ecm while the condition is occurring to see if it's starving for fuel, running lean or rich. Check for induction leaks, skewed O2 sensors etc.

      I think you might have just solved my problems with that sentence. I have had that noise for a while now, and I started to get knock sensor codes even after replacing them with the new wiring harness, and now my 2000 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 LS just started acting like it was out of timing and is making a new weird noise on the bottom end of the engine. The damage MAY already be done to the engine and I'll have to fix it, but I'll be so pissed if all of this was because of the bindex on the flexplate 😅 I'm going out in a few hours when it's not so freaking hot out to change the oil and replace the belt tensioner, so I'll remove the starter then and check it out.

I have no E torx DEEPS bigger than E4. Its a e5 for the solenoid. Now I have to wait for tools lol Sucks, You probably have a shop. I used to come across it now and then usually on rusted vehicles when the damn solenoid stud breaks off the battery cable. hate that crap. The new one the way it was shipped
      (Delco) years ago had no support maybe it had a hairline crack it tore out the lug just too easy with a baby ratchet. Like those 3 inch or smaller snap on 1/4 ratchets. Atleast Old Rattler still works to bump over the engine for another day or two. Got to love our country now. No one even sells solenoids anymore. If they do OF COURSE its Chiiiiinnnnnaaaaa ...
